Summer is short here in the land of Deep Snow (for those skiers) but it is sweet in the Elk Valley. We made a trip here specifically for the epic mountain biking...many go to Fernie for the cross country mountain biking trails but what really rocks here is some of the best downhill mountain biking at Fernie Alpine Resort. We found a great variety of trails from mild to scary...well some very technical riding for sure! What I liked is that my kids are just getting into the sport and there were fantastic intro trails that had nice berms and good-lines to make it easy to get used to the speed and excitement of downhill mountain biking. With over 37 trails we enjoyed a solid week of riding! we also mixed in some great hiking and did the Ridge traverse on the Lizard Headwall- don't miss this one if you like views and pure natural scenery! Mountain bikes! Wonderful excursion by mountain bikes into Arcadia National Park. I had a heavy cold and wondered whether to go ahead -- but when I saw the bikes and the excitement of the others, I just had to be part of it -- and it did the trick! When I returned on board, I was already feeling better, and it did not take long for the cold to go... helped along by plenty of freshly squeezed orange juice in the Britannia Grill! Wheel building tutorial: Third & fourth passes THIRD PASS! Now for the leading spokes (the first two passes were trailing spokes). Turn the wheel back over and insert a spoke into any hole but from the *inside* of the right/top flange. Keep the hub twisted clockwise or your wheel is gonna turn out more busted than your uncle Arnie's grill. Ok, so you got that spoke in. This part is kind of hard to explain and the best way for you to understand it is probably to look at an already built wheel and study it until you understand what is going on. This is the part where you actually "lace" the spokes. Of the three "crosses", the first occurs for most hubs actually behind or just barely outside the flange. The second one occurs maybe a half inch or so outside the flange, and the last one occurs out in the middle of spoke-land somewhere. Like I said it's both hard to describe and hard to see in my pictures so just get another wheel and stare at it til you understand. Anyway - the first two crosses happen *outside* the other spokes, and the final third cross goes *under*. You can bend the spokes quite a bit, as long as you don't crimp them. Bending them to an extent is perfectly ok and you're not damaging them as long as you mind the springiness of the metal and don't create a permanent crease. Use the handy spoke-nipple trick I told you about in the beginning because if you haven't needed it yet, you'll almost definitely need to do it now as the spokes will have very little play at this point. I like to put all the spokes through the inside of the flange, lace them through, and just leave them tensioned against the third spoke and under the rim (you can kinda see this in the pics). Then you can go around and do all the nipples at once. Be careful not to mar up your rim with the sharp threading on the spokes! I'm going to cut it short at this point because it's pretty much just repetition. You complete the spokes in the manner above, flip the wheel, then finish it off. Make sure all your triangles look even, brush your teeth, comb your hair and admire yourself in the mirror for a little while. Taco Wheel Co-worker says he was Just Riding Along when his rear wheel folded. No bumps or anything -- he was braking to a stop when it just tacoed spontaneously. He bought this Diamonback bike from Sports Authority about two years ago and was riding on a path in Morgan Hill, CA. Village Transportation - Lothal "I must ride that. I MUST ride that", said the boy in me, jumping up down. I had just seen a bike trailer for the first time. I was standing on the junction of a highway and the road to Lothal. A sign at the junction said, "Lothal: Ancient historic Harrapan City - 7 Km" The bike trailers were parked in the shade of enormous bushes. Somehow the bike trailer reminded me of a centaur. The forward half was an Enfield bullet, while the rear was the wide back of a small truck. Even the wheels followed the halves. The bike section had a single spoked wheel while the rear had a pair of solid metal wheels with tempo tires. It was garishly decorated with a blue paint job with a plethora of designs spreading over like encroaching creepers. Not seeing other forms of transport nearby, I guessed that I would have to take the bike trailer. The owners of the trailers were clustered together at a corner, chatting and smoking beedis. "Bhaiya", I asked in my butchered Hindi to one who looked like the leader, "How do I go to Lothal?" "LoTHaLLL?", he asked emphasizing on the syllables, "Nobody goes to LoTHaLL from here" "I want to go", I said feeling a bit frustrated, "How do I go to Lothal?" "I'll take you to Lothal", said another. I didn't like the look of him. He was stout and his head was wrapped in a thick faded muffler. Through the muffler I could only see a pair of pock marked cheeks, large Polaroid tinted glasses and a moustache. "How much?", I asked. "You come first", he said, making a stride towards his trailer "How much?", I asked again, not budging an inch "Rs 150", he said "%&^^$^$", I said mentally "That's too much", I told him "And you know it" "Rs 150 return", he clarified, "And I will have to wait for you there" I thawed a bit. Now it didn't seem exorbitant. But 150 for a 14 km ride in village transportation still seemed a bit much. "I'll give you Rs. 50" "No", he said beginning to look uninterested "Rs. 150" "I'll wait till your tempo fills up, then we can distribute the cost", I said "Nobody goes to Lothal", he said "But there must be people who want to go the villages along the way" "There is nothing between here and Lothal" After 10 minutes of bargaining, I didn't make any progress. The tempo wallah stuck stubbornly to his price. I even contemplated walking. But a 14 km walk to save Rs. 150 was not worth it. "Ok" I said. He had won "Come. Let's go." He said cheerfully. "I am going to take several hours over there. You will have to wait" "No. I can't wait for 2 hours, I will wait for an hour max" I cursed him mentally again and resolved that I would take my time and not be rushed about. He wrapped a piece of rope around a fly wheel on the engine and pulled away, hard. The motorcycle engine seemed to be waking up after a deep slumber. It coughed and shook, emitting small puffs of black smoke. Smelling the exhaust, I knew that it ran on diesel. The engine was now roaring and the whole bike trailer was shaking vigorously. Without enough people to damp the vibration, the ride for me was far from comfortable. I sat on the wood lined edge of the trailer with every bone in my body being rattled. I knew that that for the next few nights I would be sleeping on my belly. There were few people on the road. A bus full of Japanese tourists passed us. The sight of a bike trailer was a novelty for them. Before I knew it, I had 20 cameras pointed at me, clicking. Feeling very self conscious, I assumed the “I-am-not-aware-that-I'm-being-photographed" pose. Like the driver said there was nothing from the highway junction to Lothal and my visit lasted less than hour. After visiting the museum and the excavated mounds, I returned to the trailer. The 7 km back to the highway junction passed off uneventfully. Before I could get off, villagers waiting at the junction began to climb into trailer. It soon set off leaving me alone at the junction, waving at passing buses to stop. My Lil Bike 46/365 This is my nephew, Mr. L. He is almost 3 yrs. old. The little bicycle is actually my Mr. L's, but all the boys love to ride it. Its really the perfect size for my Mr. T. He's so short!! :) My nephew Mr. L, is usually a pretty good sport when it comes to having his picture taken. 1908 Fongers DB 50 Look at this bicycle at "all sizes" and see the beautiful details of these beautiful made "machines", Fongers were always made by order, the factory made exactly the bicycle the customer wanted ! In my collection is a 1908 Fongers BB60 that is actually used for 100 years and it is still in good condition, they were absolute top-class bicycles. This was the most expensive Fongers (and bicycle) you could buy in Holland in those years. It had bowden braking with cables through the handlebar, 3-speed Sturmey Archer hub, Fongers Hygienic saddle, celluloid chaincase, and like all Dutch bicycles the first 50 years of the past century, 28x1 1/2 inch wheels. Chain was adjustable by the exentric bracket, fixet positioned backwheel. Picture came out of a recently discovered crate from the old Fongers-factory filled with glass negatives. What you see is also a picture made from the 1908 glas-negative. Dutch Bicycle History: Klaas Baving 1917 Bike advertisement. The brand names '(The) Express' and 'Success' (originally American) appear first in the list of the Dutch 'Bureau voor Industriele Eigendommen' in 1897, 'Welcome' follows in 1903. Founder is Klaas Bavink. He is a very good marketeer. In 1912 he sells his business to H.G.A. Ackmann. Ackmann starts a 4th brand: 'Klaas Baving Rijwielen'. My only gripe with the set is that the discoupling of the suspension from the front fork seems a bit tight. So it slows down the folding. But hey, that's great when the bike is assembled. A few spokes which were the wrong size managed to find their way into the wheel, and complicated the build of the rear wheel. The front wheel was painless though. I was even able to sit on the bike to see how I would like the new position. The handle bars are higher than any bike I have ever owned, but it feels pretty good. I need to get the cranks in, and wire the derailers for the first test ride. There are a few other things to sort out with wiring the lights, and getting the front brake caliper to clear the spokes and align correctly. #83 - I Like To Ride My Bicycle This is my eldest boy with his brand new Giant Revel 3 which the lucky little chap got for his 9th birthday (OK his birthday isn't for another week and a half). Considering its technically a mens bike I was pleased he only stacked it once on the eight mile ride (kids, they never listen!!). He did manage to pull a number of jumps on speed humps in the road without ditching it. Klean Kanteen Water Bottle Review Info I purchased these aluminum water bottles in June 2011. For the record, all water bottles are made in China. However, Klean Kanteen claims their bottles are BPA-free. They also say their bottles are steel+silicone+bamboo. No paint or plastic. They also say their China factory is inspected and monitored closely to insure quality and good employee work conditions and pay. For the record these bottles have a little heavier feel over no-name brands. Also these have only been used 3-6 times as of this post, and the paint is wearing thin in places. This is not good for a $13 and up product. I would recommend the plain aluminum bottle. Toronto Bikes on Dundas Monday Morning Rush A Monday morning rush hour on Dundas Street in Toronto. More bikes follow these three. Operator of an automobile repair garage came out and chatted while I photographed. Garage man is of the opinion that bikes belong on the sidewalk. He wants bikes registered like automobiles, and all bicyclists licensed and insured. 1987 Cannondale Frankenbike kid and grocery hauler The bike I'd love to forsake, but can't. For those of you who have been following my bike collection, you've probably noticed that this bike is something of a departure from my usual Classic & Vintage fare. This is my $20 estate auction find from about seven years ago, a 1987 Cannondale SM400 mountain bike, pretty low in their lineup, but still a formidable mountain bike in its day from one of the pioneers of The Mountain Bike. This was the bike that got me back into cycling after years of living without the thought of a bicycle. Amazingly, despite my rapidly expanding collection of much nicer bikes (see sets), I still have it! Why? Well, as much as I hate to admit it, this bike actually does so many things really well since it's been converted into an urban cargo and kid hauler by the addition of smooth-rolling city tires (mismatched), fenders, Wald basket, child seat and Northroad-style handlebars. I outline what keeps me riding this bike: Hill climbing. I live on the top of a steep hill, and the wide mtn bike gearing lets me pull this 43 lb load of a week's worth of groceries (yes, I weighed it) up the hill without breaking a sweat. Ditto for carrying my daughter (also 43 lb) up said hill. And it allows me to go reasonably fast, as well. Braking. Nevermind that the brakes, like the tires, are mismatched (cobbled together from a bike swap box lot-- the originals were not compatible with the child seat). Between the cantilever brakes, aluminum rims and KoolStop salmon pads, the brakes are hands down the best brakes of any bike in my collection, in any weather. This is especially important when I ride my 43lb daughter down my hill. Theft deterrence. This ugly chimera has a built-in theft deterrent: its looks. Theives run away from this bike when they see it, their eyes bleeding, vowing never to look at another bike again. So, I don't have to lock it. Honest. Even in Harvard Square, I just leave it unlocked. Do you know just how much of a convenience that is? No fumbling for keys, no searching for an available post to shackle the bike to. Carefree owner experience. See that rusty chain? That was a new chain not one year ago. But since this bike is the odd man out for dry storage and gets left out in all seasons, that's what happens. But being the runt of the litter also means I don't have to obsess over things like cleaning the chain (or any part of the bike, for that matter)! Every once in a while, when something really needs replacing, I do it, but I don't sweat the details like I do with my other bikes (last repair was a necessary one: a new bottom bracket, $22). Positive attitudes from drivers. The child seat is an effective safety device, as much for the cyclist as for the child. When drivers see a bike with a child seat--with or without a child in it--their response changes from one of opposition and contempt to one of accommodation and courtesy. Drivers give me a wide berth when they pass. Drivers behind me are more patient and don't tail as closely. Drivers at intersections wave me on. I'm treated like royalty. Durability and reasonable weight. The oversized aluminum frame and fat 26x1.75" tires can take a heavy load and never feel strained. The frame doesn't flex and there are no creaks or rattles. And, the bike always feels stable and responsive, and even comfortable, with the modified upright seating position. And being aluminum, the bike is not too heavy. With basket, fenders, child seat, bell and lights, it tips the scale at 40 lb. That's less than my English and Dutch roadsters, and neither of them have nearly the cargo carrying versatility of this bike. Without the child seat (it's removable via a quick-release clamp), the bike weighs about 30 lb-- certainly no lightweight, but respectably trim for what it is. For me, weight is actually pretty important, as I have to lug my bike up 17 steps each night. Time and time again, I think to myself how nice it would be to ditch this bike in favor of something purpose-built with industrial design elegance, like a long-tail Kona Ute or Surly Big Dummy, or an ANT basket bike. But these would set me back $1000 on the low end, and up to $4000 on the high end. And then, if I had one of those bikes, I'd feel compelled to baby it, not leave it outside, and keep it locked. Not to mention they'd all weigh more than this bike. I'd be paranoid about its well-being and it would add extra concern on my part. I don't want that. I need something reasonably comfortable and versatile that i can hop on and never worry about getting stolen, scratched, or damaged. MINI Roof Rack in Action Getting ready to go on a bike ride, with my Trek bike and my Burley trailer (to carry my (then) 4-year old son) on the roof of my car in front of our house in Oakland (about 15 feet from the Berkeley border). The rack was a dealer-installed option on my 2003 MINI Cooper S. Beep Beep At the mtb race this weekend I was happy to see several Mini Coopers with bike racks (Yakima doesn't make a rack for this car). If anyone has experience carrying around outdoor toys atop their Mini let me know in the comments. I'm this close to pulling the trigger...
