This is Barack Obama
Despite all of my cynicism toward politicians in general, Obama was a skilled and affecting speaker.
He told the story of a woman with a sick family member she had to care for while getting three hours of sleep at night so she could go to work at 1am for Fed Ex, and still she couldn't find a way to pay for her student loans. A woman who worked hard and wanted to find some success in her life, but because of the health care and tuition crises in this country, had no chance for that.
That story is so similar to my own that I got choked up. None of us, save the very wealthy, lives a life unaffected by our government's refusal to provide its citizens two very basic, fundamental things: access to health care and higher education. When the least of our citizens has access to these things, the legacy that makes many of us ashamed to be Americans will start to disappear.
And GET ON YOUR BIKE, BARACK. We're not "addicted to foreign oil." We're addicted to the notion that the energy we expend to move around must come from combustion engines. Know what kind of energy source is cheap, renewable, non-pollutant and available to everyone? CALORIES. The kind you PUT IN YOUR MOUTH and that, when not burned, GIVE YOU A FAT ASS.
Not that he has a fat ass. The man's built like a Kenyan-- lean as far as the eye can see.
