Sylvanian Families Christmas

This year we set up the Japanese Sylvanian Families house my wife used to play with when she was a little kid for my little niece who is eight years old now.

Sylvanian Families are very hard to get in Holland, so obviously she had never seen these before and was in total awe of the set-up my wife made.

These are actually promo cards from Discovery Zone which was an amazing place to take kids to keep them active and lots of fun for older peeps too. These were probably from a birthday party I went to for a friend's child.

See the other sides in the previous photo in my stream. It is rather cool how they make a composite picture (even if I don't have all the cards) which is something I didn't realize until I was about to take the picture after having laid the cards out.

What I also find interesting is how this was originally a Japanese tokusatsu series along the lines of Ultraman and Godzilla (which I also have some of elsewhere in my stream).

Oh, and it turns out there's an entirely new version of Power Rangers as of 2010. Everything that's old is new again! :D

Float with the Flowers

Beam Camp is a 5-week summer program for boys and girls aged 7-17 in Strafford, New Hampshire, USA. The camp cultivates hands-on skills in the fine and manual arts while exploring innovative thinking, design and the creative process. Each summer a Project Master is commissioned to design a unique large-scale collaborative endeavor that campers produce and enjoy.

The project 'Float with the Flowers' was designed for the particular location of the 'Beam Camp' within a deep forest and next to tranquil lakes. Derived from nature the idea combines two elements - water and earth. Inspired by the water lily and the rose of Jericho the approach suggests a self built toy that transforms from a 'land use' towards a floating 'water occupancy'. Due to basic gravitational rules the structure opens once it is pulled into the lake.

When the 'flower' rests on shore it is closed and the leaves form a protected introverted sculpture. Still the vehicle can be pushed around and being played with but might also just wait on some designated spots to be torn into the lake. Inside the water it revives. Like a water lily that catches sunlight in the early morning hours it slowly opens until it's leaves touch the water surface. Now the structure works like a big airbed or float and can be used as swimming islands.

I received a request on BrickLink for 7 zombies. I will be releasing pictures of them as I complete them but here is zombie #2.

I want to give thanks to Roaglaan for the blood splatter. It really made the fig for me. I didnt use if for the face intentionally.

Also for those who don't know why his eyes are like that:

"His hood is always pulled down and over his face, but if you look carefully you can see the skin around his eyes has either been clawed off, or the skin cells have died as a result of the infection, causing him to lose the layers of his skin. What might be left of his eyes have a white glow akin to common infected in the dark, however it may be light reflecting off of the large amount of blood surrounding his eye sockets."

It's a long story. I bought this film in autumn 2004 when I visited Japan for the first time. Then I got this camera as a prize from a locally organized lomo competition in October 2006. Then I put the film in it and took a few pictures in late 2006 and early 2007. Then I forgot about this camera and then I brought it to Geneva. Aldo finished the roll and processed the film in late 2008. And then I get to see the pictures that I took 2 years ago. Camera is truly a time machine.

Jack is once again coming back to China from Australia for his summer vacation. He will stop over in Beijing and we will meet each other tomorrow. It will be funny for him to see this old picture.:)

These are some of the toys that Maxine plays with...or, at this stage, stares, gawks or slaps at. The flying swallow mobile totally captivates Maxine. She'll stare at it forever, even when she's crying. Black and white really works on new babies! BTW, after doing research on the best(-looking) and most space-efficient sleep set-up for a baby in an apartment with limited expansion capability, we decided not to get a free-standing bassinet (bc the only one that my snobby designer side liked was $500) and instead decided to put the bassinet money towards a Bugaboo stroller and use the stroller's bassinet as Maxine's early-stage bed. The Bugaboo is kind of embarrassing to push around because it's the equivalent of driving a fancy bells-and-whistles SUV. (H2?) also, in our very diverse neighborhood--even though it's obvious we are newcomers--it totally screams 'yuppie invasion! we are gentrifying like maniacs and there is nothing you can do to stop us!' literally, just about everyone of us newcomers has the same stroller. anyhow, in the end, Maxine most prefers to sleep on the $20 vinyl diaper change pad that you see above. She 2nd-most prefers this cheap-o inclined foam co-sleeper we got after we discovered she hated the Bugaboo bassinet. Moral of the story: start cheap and work your way up if you need to.

I got this camera about 15 years ago when it came in the mail as a “free gift” to my mom. She, having no need of it, asked me if I wanted it before she tossed it. Back then, I could not see any use for such a, uh,…cheap toy threw it in a box of stuff which has just surfaced lately as I am getting ready to move. Eureka! It takes real toy camera pix!!! I will post a few (as well as the ones from the Holga due to arrive tomorrow) as a fun and retro looking set. I love this kind of stuff, but it took me evolving into digital to truly enjoy that which has been around for years. Back when I considered these useless, I was an SLR (and a few select rangefinder) snob, but no more! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

This is a really neat, all natural wood toy fire truck. The ladders on the side come off, and the ladder on the top goes up and down.

Boy Watching Tom and Jerry @ HCMC

I was having breakfast and I saw a little boy watching Tom and Jerry on the restaurant's wall. It's amazing to me how Tom and Jerry are so popular in Vietnam. It's such an old cartoon, and yet it's still seen by all kids! You can even still buy Tom and Jerry toys. I am so curious why that is. I have a feeling that the government here approves of Tom and Jerry which is probably something from their generation that they grew up with and that they see as being wholesome and therefore they push it to be aired on TV. As a result, children today are watching cartoons from 50+ years ago. Odd, but cute.

** for everyone who stayed...did i tell you this is about one of my cats??
let me tell you about my girl, olivia. she is approximately 4 years old. we got her from a local shelter and when we brought her home, she had such a horrible cold that her nose was bloody from sneezing so much. she would sneeze and a fine mist of blood would spray everywhere. a visit to the vet and a round of antibiotics made her all better and she has been our little princess ever since. she was 8 mths old when we brought her home.
spanky and agatha are very much extraverts. they do what they want, when they want. if something or someone new comes into the house, they are right there to check it out. they jump on the counters when no one is looking (scamps), claw the carpet if i don't change their scratch pads quickly enough and push over glasses of soda or water if we're forgetful enough to leave them out.
not olivia. she is such a good, sweet, quiet and prim little angel. she never does anything aggressive or mischievous. she is a perfect little angel (not that the other 2 aren't. we're nuts about all 3 of them because they are all so different.)
the way you see her lying now was absolutely unheard of before we adopted agatha several months ago. olivia was skittish and somewhat neurotic, probably due to her time in the pokey with all that barking and hissing and general chaos. add to that the fact that spanky takes advantage of her refined personality and instead of just playing with her, he bullied her. she was a nervous wreck all the time.
now, she plays like a kitten, rolls around like THIS and appears to be genuinely relaxed most of the time. agatha loves her and when the two girls play together, it's really playing. they chase each other and roll around play biting but agatha never hurts her like spanky did...and that's important.
so anyway, she's the little princess of our 'pride' of cats. =]

150 + people at 3 yr old bday

this is amazing to me the amount of planning, decorating and cost put into the birthday party for a 3 year old classmate of emerson's

it was a full appetizer, drinks, dinner, served and then 3 desserts.......open bar........in a rented cottage on the beach.........the family had some suites in the duplexes nearby as well

full kitchen, pool, bathrooms

outdoor courtyard for the 3 pinatas.......amazing load of candy and toys that burst from the homemade pinatas....the family are professional chefs so the food is catered quality, just done in house

there were over 52 kids..........as they ran out of cupcakes and the aunt of the birthday girl sitting next to me made the cupcakes......wow!

it was a princess theme and most of the girls came dressed in princess costumes, and there was a belle, 2 mermaids, 2 snow whites and several other fancy princess gowns

of course the birthday girl took the show, making her grand entrance!

there were crowns and necklaces for all the women and most boys......wow just wow

we stayed over 6 hours......and when we left the party was still going strong.....my camera died, but hubby got a few more photos and videos that i will upload soon

The Fisher Price Merry Mousewife

This is a Merry Mousewife pull behind toy made by Fisher Price. I had one in the early 1960s as a toddler, and miraculously, I have held onto her through countless moves and life changes. She has a yellow pull string that seems incredibly short now, I can’t believe I was once that close to the ground. Her yellow plastic cap has become brittle throughout the years but she still clacketty clacks as her broom swishes back and forth when you pull her.

There was a high school at the bottom of our road. At the time, I would have been 3 years old, maybe 4 because I hadn’t started kindergarten yet. We were living in east London, Ontario. I would pull my “Merry Mousemife” up and down the sidewalk and proudly show her to the high school students as they walked home in the afternoons. I spent a lot of time pounding that sidewalk, either drawing on it with coloured chalks, roller skating, searching for spent firecracker cases after Victoria Day, picking off old chewing gum and “recycling it” (ugh, when I think of it… my mother never knew til years later), riding my tricycle or pulling my mouse along.

Merry Mousewife. What a name.

Could you imagine a toy being named that now? The funny thing is, I never really thought of her as a housewife, she was just a busy little mouse to me. I never connected the concept to the many housewives on our street back then, besides, they were people, not mice!

4 Wheels

During a recent trip up into the northern part of Long Underwear Country, the toddler discovered the joys of riding with Grandpa on the four-wheeler. While this piece of equipment is admittedly built for chores like clearing land, it has officially been repurposed and christened as the toddler's favorite new toy. Staying inside was not an option on this trip because every five minutes, Nathaniel was looking up at Grandpa asking RIDE?? And who could say no to those big, puppy dog eyes?
