This may also represent the "Kundalini" - the serpent power that sleeps in the bottom of the spinal cord of human beings. The Two serpents may depict Ida and Pingala , the two spiritual nerves that run in the spinal cord

The city opened up to industry even before it became a city or was called Hamilton. A chopping mill was built in the Head of the lake in 1815. By 1833, when Hamilton started growing as a city, there was a tin and sheet iron manufactory, and three mills. In the 1850's Hamilton invested in the railroad industry. Many railroads went through our city, sealing this as a main form of transporting goods to and from the city. This was the same time that a Customs House was built on Stuart Stret to handle the goods. In the 1860's Hamilton started down the path of the Textile industry with a man named William Eli Sanford. His store and mill was located where the newer building of the Royal Connaught stands today, taking up the entire block. Long before Hamilton was the Steel City, it was the Textile Town. In the 1890's electricity arrived in Hamilton before many other cities in Canada, giving it the advantage. this was established by the five Johns, which included John Patterson and John Moodie, president and vice-president of the Cotton Company. This group of men was integral in bringing much industry and business to the city.

Yes, unfortunately mice go with the territory of living in an old farmhouse. When I came downstairs the cats were pacing back and forth in front of this cabinet, so I opened it up, removed some of the pots and left them to it. This was a couple of weeks ago. Took two days, but Stella happily showed off her trophy a couple of mornings later. Yuck!

Airstrip, St. John the Baptist Parish, Louisiana

Airstrip, St. John the Baptist Parish, Louisiana

St. John the Baptist Parish (French: Paroisse de Saint-Jean-Baptiste) is a parish located in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The parish seat is Edgard, an unincorporated area. In 2000, its population was 43,044.

St. John the Baptist Parish is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Kenner Metropolitan Statistical Area as well as the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Combined Statistical Area.

The largest slave insurrection in US history, known as the German Coast Uprising, started here on January 8, 1811. It was short-lived, but more than 200 slaves gathered from plantations along the river and marched through St. Charles Parish toward New Orleans to seek their freedom.

The parish includes three nationally significant examples of 19th century plantation architecture: Evergreen Plantation, Whitney Plantation Historic District, and San Francisco Plantation House.

St. John the Baptist Parish was the second permanent settlement in Louisiana and considered part of the German Coast.[citation needed]. The parish was established in the early 1720s by a group of German colonists. Many families established towns around the Mississippi River in the areas now known as Lucy, Garyville, and Reserve. The area was under the French regime until 1768 when France delivered Louisiana to the Spanish after the Seven Years' War.

Around this time period, many Acadians, people of French descent, began arriving in south Louisiana due to being exiled by the British from what is now Nova Scotia, when the British were victorious in Canada. The first Acadian village was established in what is now Wallace. The German and French cultures thrived alongside one another, but French came to be the dominant language. They developed a culture known as Creole.

The early settlers in the area received land grants from the Spanish or French governments, depending upon which country owned the territory at the time of application. These grants generally included some frontage on the river for transportation of goods to and from New Orleans and world markets. The remaining property extended away from the river deeply into the wetlands.

Most transportation was done by boat, mainly on the bayous and lakes, but the Mississippi River as well, for decades into the 19th century. St. John, with its fertile land being nine feet above sea level, proved to be an excellent settlement for farming and agriculture. In the late 18th century, planters began to invest more in sugar cane cultivation and processing, which led to an increase in the number of enslaved Africans they needed for labor. Sugar meant prosperity for the planters and New Orleans.

With the sugar wealth, some wealthy planters built elaborate houses and outbuildings. Three survive in St. John parish; each is recognized for its national architectural and historic significance. On the west bank are the major complex of house and outbuildings designated Whitney Plantation Historic District and the National Historic Landmark (NHL) of [Evergreen Plantation (Wallace, Louisiana)|[Evergreen Plantation]]. San Francisco Plantation House, also a designated NHL, is on the east bank. San Francisco and Evergreen plantations are open to the public for tours. The Whitney plantation house is targeted for renovation. Whitney and Evergreen plantations are both included among the first 26 sites on the Louisiana African American Heritage Trail.

In January 1811, the German Coast Uprising started in this parish. It was the largest slave insurrection in US history, but it was short-lived and slaves killed only two whites in the course of it. Five plantations were attacked and three houses burned to the ground. Charles Deslondes, a free person of color from Haiti, was one of the leaders of the insurrection. He and his followers were influenced by the ideals and promises of the French and Haitian revolutions. He gathered more than 200 slaves from plantations along the way, marching into St. Charles Parish toward New Orleans before meeting much resistance. Unable to get the arms they had planned on, the slaves were defeated by well-armed informal and territorial militias. During these confrontations and executions after brief trials, Deslondes and ninety-five slaves were killed. Decades before the Civil War and emancipation, their actions expressed the people's deep desire for freedom.[1]

As the families of the settlement grew, their need for education for their children grew also. Before the Civil War, typically planters would hire tutors, often college graduates from the North, who would live with the family for an extended period of time, typically two years. The tutor would teach all of the planter's children, and sometimes the family would arrange for neighborhood children to join the classes as well.

In 1869 families wanting to continue with French instruction founded private schools to continue their culture. This was when the Reconstruction legislature established universal public schools for the first time.

Ladd-Gilman House (1721) & Folsom Tavern (1775) (pano)

Ladd-Gilman House (1721) & Folsom Tavern (1775) (pano)

Built 1721 as one of NH's earliest brick houses, and enlarged and clapboarded in the 1750's, this dwelling served as the state treasury during the Revolution. Here were born John Taylor Gilman (1753-1828). Who was elected Governor for an unequalled total of 14 years, and his brother Nocholas Gilman, Jr. (1755-1814), a signer of the U.S. Constitution. The house has been maintained since 1902 by the Society of the Cincinnati.

In October 2004, the Folsom Tavern (right side of photo) was moved to its current location on Water St. in downtown Exeter. Restoration of the building has included installing a new roof and clapboards and removing a 1950's-era kitchen and bathroom.

Interior restoration began in January 2006. On May 8, 2006, the museum received $100,000 from New Hampshire's Land and Community Heritage Investment Program (LCHIP) to complete interior restoration of the tavern. The project was completed in Spring 2007.

The Folsom Tavern was built c. 1775 by Colonel Samuel Folsom, brother of General Nathaniel Folsom. The tavern stood facing the square, located on the corner of Court and Mill streets (now Front and Water streets).

--------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------

George Washington’s Visit
Revolutionary officers met at the Folsom Tavern on Tuesday, November 18, 1783, and formed the Society of the Cincinnati in the State of New Hampshire. President George Washington stopped by the tavern on the morning of November 4, 1789 to ‘partake of a collation’ during his tour of New England.

Widow Folsom’s Inn
After Samuel Folsom’s death in 1790, one-third of his estate with half-part of the ‘mansion’ was bequeathed to his wife Elizabeth, and the remaining two-thirds of his estate went to his three daughters. Elizabeth continued to run the tavern until her death in 1805 as “Widow Folsom’s Inn.” The historic structure stayed in the family until 1856 when it was sold to George Washington Dearborn, a retired druggist who kept a “curiosity” antiques shop in the building.

A Tavern Transformed
In May 1869, approval for the widening of Water Street was granted to alleviate the traffic congestion in the center of town, and the tavern was set back closer to Sleeper’s jewelry store. During the first move, the original chimneys were removed and the building was put on a high foundation that allowed for shops beneath.

Upon Dearborn’s death in 1896, he bequeathed his ‘corner estate’ to Elizabeth Ewer, an unmarried local woman who was known as “Miss Lizzie Ewer, Inspirational Lecturer and Test Medium,” a mystic and landscape painter.

The Museum uses the Tavern mostly for special events and programs.

The Exeter, Hampton and Amesbury Street Railway began in 1897 and the lower floor of the tavern became the passenger station waiting room. The upper floors of the building held apartments and offices, including the headquarters for the Exeter and Hampton Electric Co. In the basement at various times were a shoe repair shop, a Chinese laundry, a millinery shop operated by Nellie Rollins, and the passenger waiting station. Oliver R. Yeaton and his wife, Augusta Cenith Beardslee ran the streetcar waiting station and opened their restaurant, later called “Washington’s Lunch,” in the waiting room around 1907.

Building Lot to Gas Station
The tavern was purchased from Elizabeth Ewer on November 4, 1909, by John Scammon. Twenty years later, Scammon sold the Folsom site to the Standard Oil Co. and “with a fine appreciation of the niceties” gave the building to the Society of the Cincinnati.

The Tavern’s New Home
Society members raised the funds needed to move the tavern to its third foundation at 21 Spring Street. The old tavern site became a Standard Oil filling station. The Folsom Tavern remained empty until 1947 when Foster and Martha G. Stearns moved into the tavern after a major renovation and modernization by Boston architects Downer & Root. The kitchen of the Folsom Tavern was in an ell and this was not moved when the tavern was brought from its original location. After Foster Stearns died in 1956, Martha moved to a suite in the Exeter Inn, and the tavern subsequently housed four more tenants off and on until 1992.

Folsom Tavern (1775)

Folsom Tavern (1775)

In October 2004, the Folsom Tavern was moved to its current location on Water St. in downtown Exeter.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

STAX Museum of American Soul Music

Memphis, TN 38106.
Phone: 901-946-2535

Founded in 1957 as Satellite Records, the name Stax Records was adopted in 1961. The label was a major factor in the creation of the Southern soul and Memphis soul music styles, also releasing gospel, funk, jazz, and blues recordings. While Stax is renowned for its output of African-American music, the label was founded by two white businesspeople, Jim Stewart and his sister Estelle Axton, and featured several popular ethnically-integrated bands, including the label's house band, Booker T. & the MG's.

Following the death of Stax's biggest star, Otis Redding, in 1967 and the severance of the label's distribution deal with Atlantic Records in 1968, Stax continued primarily under the supervision of a new co-owner, Al Bell. Over the next five years, Bell expanded the label's operations significantly, in order to compete with Stax's main rival, Motown Records in Detroit. During the mid-1970s, a number of factors, including a problematic distribution deal with CBS Records, caused the label to slide into insolvency, resulting in its forced closure in late 1975.

In 1977, Fantasy Records acquired the post-1968 Stax catalog, as well as selected pre-1968 recordings. Beginning in 1978, Stax (now owned by Fantasy) began signing new acts and issuing new material, as well as re-issuing previously recorded Stax material. However, by the early 1980's no new material was being issued on the label, and for the next two decades, Stax was strictly a re-issue label.

After Concord Records acquired Fantasy in 2004, the Stax label was reactivated, and is today used to issue both the 1968–1975 catalog material and new recordings by current R&B/soul performers. Atlantic Records continues to hold the rights to the vast majority of the 1959-1968 Stax material.

Explore #1, FP, & Interestingness :) Thanks so much everyone. Pretty excited about this but surprised that of all the shots this one made it there.

Enough cars and street lights, it's time for more St. Andrews Church indoor shots. This one was taken behind the altar. I would've made a vertorama but there was a back side of a wooden stand right below that wasn't very appealing. To create this shot I did do some symmetry flips but if you look hard enough there are key differences that make it look somewhat real. I'm off now, Thanks for stopping by, and I'll hit up your streams later today.

Tonemapped HDR made from 7 exposures. Brought it into CS3 and blended 3 exposures back onto it. A symmetry flip here and a symmetry there, a bit of masking and bit of blend, and Kapow!! Curves, contrast, slight cooling filter, saturation, unsharp mask.

So yeah, it's possible. Just a lot harder than, say, hexagonal or pentagonal symmetry.

I didn't create a full grid for the parallelogram twists around that outside, but they are referenced. I just used partial creases for those additional sets of lines, to make it look cleaner.

Farmer, Luoping County, Yunnan Province.

With precious little soil, flat land and no running water, the hundreds of hollows that form the interior of Luoping's karst limestone mountain "forest" were settled relatively late by Chinese standards with Han Chinese overspill flowing in from the north during the Qing Dynasty. These villages are off the map, geographically and metaphorically. While the people who remain here may have satellite TV aerials and solar power panels, the nearest schools, food markets, mains water supply, health care, not to mention heavily censored internet access, are still a two hour motorbike ride away along bumpy dirt tracks.

Passing through a different unmarked village for every one of the seven hours it took me to hike between the two roadends that penetrate this apparently blank wilderness, I didn't meet a single person between the ages of ten and thirty. Though the elderly with memories of war and famine within their lifetime might have been smiling, the parents I spoke to were bleak about their children's prospects. The ethnic minority villages 15 km away on the other side of the mountains at least had the prospect of expanding tourism to sustain a local non-farming economy and thus attract the government investment necessary to sustain communities, but for these villages migration to the city is the only hope.

When reflected upon from the bustle, modernity and comfort of life on the eastern seaboard, it seems almost impossible that this could be the same country I currently inhabit. As an English teacher at a private training school in a wealthy coastal city, I prepare students for Ivy League education n the US, advise bosses on language unlikely to offend their foreign clients, and flatter rich housewives who wait for loved ones to return from new lives in new countries.

8/16/11 cblog WARNING TO THE RICH OF A SENSE OF FALSE SECURITY ; callistus m: "Jesus had rich friends..never said rich people were evil but having much money cn prevent people from loving god..let god be god..even let god be the source of their wealth..even now jewish people believe wealth is a sign of god' blessing..yet when people bc rich they invest most of their time into protecting their wealth..when they r rich they may have false sense of security..they think they have everything..hard for people to let go..let god be in the life of the rich..why jesus ..peter after hearing this..said "who can be saved'..will we be saved..jesus told him follow me..the world....at te end the rich will serve the poor ? Or the first will serve the last..take care of what we have..be good stewards..time talents gifts..be good stewards..make use of wisely.."

Judges 6.11-24 "The angel of the LORD came and sat under the terebinth in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite. While his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the wine press to save it from the Midianites, the angel of the LORD appeared to him and said"The LORD is with you, O champion!" Gideon said to him, "My Lord, if the LORD is with us why has all this happened to us" Where are his wondrous deeds of which our fathers told us when they said, "Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt?" For now the LORD has abandoned us and has delivered us into the power of Midian." The LORD turned to him and said, "Go with the strength you have and save Israel from the power of Midian It is I who send you." But Gideon answered him, "Please, my lord, how can I save Israel? My family is the lowliest in Manasseh and I am the most insignificant in my father's house.""I shall be with you," the LORD said to him,"and you will cut down Midian to the last man." Gideon answered him, "If I find favor with you give me a sign that you are speaking with me Do not depart from here, I pray you, until I come back to you and bring out my offering and set it before you." He answered, "I will await your return." So Gideon went off and prepared a kid and a measure of flour in the form of unleavened cakes Putting the meat in a basket and the broth in a pot he brought them out to him under the terebinth and presented them The angel of God said to him, "Take the meat and unleavened cakes and lay them on this rock; then pour out the broth." When he had done so the angel of the LORD stretched out the tip of the staff he held and touched the meat and unleavened cakes Thereupon a fire came up from the rock that consumed the meat and unleavened cakes and the angel of the LORD disappeared from sight. Gideon, now aware that it had been the angel of the LORD, said, "Alas, Lord GOD that I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face!" The LORD answered him,"Be calm, do not fear. You shall not die." So Gideon built there an altar to the LORD and called it Yahweh-shalom

Responsorial Psalm 11-12, 13-14 Responsorial Psalm R. (see 9b) The Lord speaks of peace to his peopl

Matt 19/23-30 "Jesus said to his disciples“Amen, I say to you, it will be hard for one who is rich to enter the Kingdom of heaven Again I say to you it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the Kingdom of God.” When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and said“Who then can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and said“For men this is impossible, but for God all things are possible.” Then Peter said to him in reply“We have given up everything and followed you What will there be for us?” Jesus said to them, “Amen, I say to you that you who have followed me, in the new age when the Son of Man is seated on his throne of glory, will yourselves sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel And everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands for the sake of my name will receive a hundred times more, and will inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first"

So Many Fun Lessons!

So Many Fun Lessons!

We ended our three day Memorial Weekend adventure with a hike in the northern tip of the Hoh rain forest; specifically the Bogachiel river. I learned so many things on this hike!

We were heading home (to Bremerton) since it was pouring rain all day on Sunday. In the morning we went to 4th beach above Kalaloch on the Pacific Ocean for the low tide (-1.7) for under the sea life shots. As we were traveling home, my husband spotted "his" herd of elk down in a beautiful pasture land so off the main road we went. Just below Forks we found our way along the Bogachiel River and found the herd. After my husband had his fill, we decided to keep driving along this old dirt road which ended at a hiking trail head!

With excitement I wanted to jump in and explore the area... heck, we were already wet and the rain had slowed to a drizzle. After talking to a hiker coming out, I convinced my husband to adventure in after stating "we'll just go in a little ways and out!"

Lessons Learned:
1. Always pack a bottle of water, no matter how "quick" you think the jaunt will be.
2. Don't listen to a hiker explain the "easy, short loop around a wetland area" rather consult your hiking books; heck, I had two in the car!
3. Listen to your husband who declares he isn't able to hike any more (he has disabilities and his legs don't like to work much without pain) but will go along since he doesn't want to sit in the car as you (I) go into the woods alone.
4. Read the trail signs better; check with those books packed deep in the trunk of your car.
5. Pack food......
6. If you think your boots will last one more outing before you "water protect" them again, stop and do it before the next hike (did I mention it was a rain forest)?
7. Just because you shot one hand held image and used your IS, it doesn't mean you have to leave it on for the next 20 shots using your tripod. Check the quality of your shots even it if is pouring down rain and you want to tuck your camera back in your coat quickly.
8. Why does vanity trump a quality yet dorky rain hat? I really have to invest in one!

We really had a great time and normally we plan better! A short little loop ended up being 4 miles and I almost lost my husband in the process (he was fed up and almost turned around but since we didn't know how much further the trail went, he didn't know if it was shorter going forward or backward). It was wet, wet, wet and we came out wet, hungry and thirsty and only a few pictures to remind us of our little adventure.
We will go back (my husband says) for the beauty of this place was outstanding.... just on a dryer day and better prepared.

What Is Index Investing

what is index investing

    index investing
  • (Index investor) Type of speculator that seeks long-term investments by hoarding commodities futures contracts for extended periods and betting on the continued rise of commodity price.

  • a passive approach to investing where a portfolio is constructed to mimic the performance of a specific index.

  • An index fund or index tracker is a collective investment scheme (usually a mutual fund or exchange-traded fund) that aims to replicate the movements of an index of a specific financial market, or a set of rules of ownership that are held constant, regardless of market conditions.

new GUI designs, work and task focused. What's wrong with current GUIs, case of Mac OS X (preparing)

new GUI designs, work and task focused. What's wrong with current GUIs, case of Mac OS X (preparing)

*add that this 'session' idea requires? - 'multiple desktops' (finally release 'desktop' from being 'metaphor' - on computer - you can have as many desktops as you want for your each task...) - on the corner of the loft - you can have desks and shelves for this task, and on the other corner you can have this desktop for another kind of task etc.)
[We may quote that when researchers and teachers really listened to the kids, they end up making classroom bigger and kids were able to move around - to do this - or that - and kids liked to move around in that space for different activities - quote that episode.]

Why no 'Recent Folders' ? (and why no 'Recent/Current Tasks' registering/indicating capacity?, this kind of 'focus/idea/task' log should be possible.): Recent Folders on the Go menu thing

Why we don't have 'recently used or currently in use' folders command or button?
Why we have to depend on menu bars and pull down menu and click structure? Which is basically not GUI at all.

Mac OS X has recent items, but it's for 'recent applications' and 'recent files' and they are quite useless. [> move on to say idea of 'recent' is something really limited and coming without context. 'Tasks' 'Sessions' idea have more context - and 'recent' is just a mere slice of that process entity.]

We can think most used applications are all registered in Dock by users, so it's quite unnecessary duplication. I have it already, with visual icons, right in front of me. So it doesn't have to show up on the menu in a way.

Files. Say I might go through several hundreds of files per a day, or even more, then registering only 10 or so files is quite pointless. Also, it seems to fail to register all the files - some files for graphics applications never shows up there it seems. Also that 'recent files' - count in 'Start-up items' (which is another 'basically not really working' feature of Mac OS X.)

Then, I need OS to remember at lease 1,000 files. Or say 40 or 50 folders, maybe near 100 tasks or subjects. I think I don't need OS to remember applications, it's in Docks, and most of the time I know them very well already. I'd be able to handle Startup Menu contianing several hundred files or folders - if visualized grouping is implemented, and if I can switch the views. (show only 30, or show 100, or show according to 'tasks', show according to 'created' or 'modified' and so on.)

So if we can register 'task' in to OS, and if we can register (or OS can hold) 'last session' idea - where the session of a task pauses - and I move on to different task or turn off the machine - basically, all these very limited implementation of 'recent applications, recent files and startup items' - can be removed. They are barely developed and barely invested features of OS X.

[[So it's very loopy. If the idea of 'last session' (which Firefox has now) is applied to OS, then we should be able to have OS remembering what are the last sessions, what were used, what got involved (files and apps), and what are registered, jotted down 'recent tasks and ideas' I'm willing to work on. (with labeling slot like 'all encompassing' 'graphics' 'work' 'next round of tasks, maybe next month' ' software glitches' ' important' 'currently at the top of my head' 'someone talking about that topic, finally' and so on. But Mac OS X refuses to work on both ends. Its 'recent' functions and 'start-up' functions both are made to be very unpractical. ]]

So 'Recent apps' function is basically pointless. It's all in Dock. 'recent files' is useless because it only registers 5 or 10 files. And Start-up items is basically 'abandoned feature' in OS X, so it almost looks like Apple decided not to develop these 'work supporting' features so I often wonders where they are really putting their effort and focus on for development.

---

Past 20 years or more's regular method is go to Finder(in Mac's case), go file menu, choose 'open new finder window' and then by yourself, you have to tour/browse around the directories, find the folder/location you need, and then save the file or open the file - or start sorting out files and folders there etc.

[In other dialogue, Max OS X provides 'recently used folders' - kind of - but for some reasons it's not always very smooth and reliable on my machine (with few external hard disk drives attached. The menu dialogue simply doesn't work - in a way which I can't describe.) * And this function of remembering/registering 'mostly recently used folders' doesn't have to be embedded within an dialogue window. It can be an independent function.]

So OS can have a function to register/memorize 'which are the most recently used/opened folders(file locations).

Then you don't need to go file menu. There'd be a button or command to enter. One click or one key stroke, then OS will indicate folders, been involved in work process recently. Then you just can go there and click the one.

Currently we still don't have such simp

V. “Emergence of Grand Scale Mining S. XX” / Historical Mural (2.05 MT x 3.15 MT)

The year 1904 can be remembered as a crucial breakthrough of Chile re-emerging in the international scenery when Braden Copper Company was established in the State of Maine, United States, with a capital of 4 million dollars to initiate operations in El Teniente Mine near Rancagua, Chile. As insignificant it may sound by worldwide standards, little was to be known that one of the largest copper deposits in the world was engaged and a new era of glory begun with the development of large scale mining in Chile. Historically speaking, Chileans were quite aware of rich deposits such as El Teniente, Chuquicamata, Andina, or even El Abra, but not until an adequate technology and significant capitals were invested could the country realize the true potentials which lay ahead as a full scale mining nation and its impact in mineral economy until present days.

Equally important was what sought to be dispersed copper deposits in Chuquicamata in northern Chile not until the Guggenheim brothers who also participated in El Teniente, became interested and with a group of competent geologist determined that Chuquicamata was one big deposit with a total reserve of 690 million tons of oxide and sulphide ores. Production started in 1915 under the tutelage of Chile Exploration Company with an annual production of 45,000 tons of copper.

The profound shift from short term profit business mentality to anonymous long term profit endeavour created a new phenomenon of methodical hard work which granted an empirical knowledge useful not only to exploit natural resources but also offer realistic solutions for future generations.

Today when we look back and reflect upon the meaning of Chilean mining culture, we understand how important these events were to prepare ourselves in a much greater challenge of future global crisis and the inexorable fact of non renewable natural resources.
