The disk platters are highly reflective. You can see the read/write head (the top one, anyway) accross it and the parts that move it to the right. On the far right, that's an air filter / silicagel combination to, er, filter air and suck up humidity inside the disk. (Disks are NOT airtight, y'know, and dust and moisture are not their best friends.)

My New Heart Valves

Okay, I know this is a weird photo but it is what is inside of me! October 9, 2007, I had open heart surgery at the age of 34. My aortic valve stopped working and apparently my heart was over-working itself and had become very large-which is NOT good. It was accidently discovered in a basic physical- an unusually LOUD heart murmur that I have never had before. 5 weeks later I'm getting open heart surgery! They found an anerysm on my aorta paper thin and about to burst. I was a walking time bomb. To say the least, I have been given a 2nd chance in life. The 3 little circles are my pig valves on the aortic part of my heart. The aorta side of the heart is under the most pressure because it sends oxygenated blood to the body. I was not getting enough oxygen to my brain! Somehow, I did not feel many symptoms. I was lucky. Very. My father died suddenly in 1995 of heart failure. Still to this day, we do not know what kind of heart failure but we have a good idea now. Apparently, aortic valve disfunction is genetic! Luckily, the problem was caught early enough to save my life! And I was lucky enough that it did not cause any permanent damage to my heart. Stories like these just show how fragile we all are! Live your life like it was the last day of your life because you never know what lerks around the corner of our destinies.....

Buttermilk Marinade:
2 cups buttermilk
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon cracked black pepper

Fried Chicken:
1 (3 1/2-pound) chicken, cut into 8 pieces
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
5 cups vegetable shortening

Buttermilk Marinade: In a gallon-sized sealable plastic bag or a large bowl with a tight-fitting lid, combine the buttermilk, mustard, salt, dry mustard, cayenne, and black pepper. Add the chicken pieces and turn to coat. Seal and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.

Frying the chicken: Preheat oven to 150 degrees F. In a 13-inch by 9-inch by 2-inch pan, whisk together flour, baking powder, dry garlic, and salt. Add chicken pieces and turn to coat thickly. Let the chicken stand 10 minutes, turning occasionally to recoat with flour. Shake off excess flour before frying.

In a 10-inch by 12-inch heavy-gauge skillet with a deep-fry thermometer attached, heat the vegetable shortening over medium-high heat, bringing it to 375 degrees F. In batches of four, fry the chicken pieces, turning once when the coating is sealed and begins to brown — 3 to 4 minutes.

Reduce the heat to medium to lower the temperature to 325 degrees F. Maintain temperature and continue to fry, turning the pieces halfway through cooking time until chicken is golden brown and cooked through — about 20 more minutes.

Transfer to a wire rack on a baking sheet and place in oven to keep warm. Repeat the procedure for the remaining batches. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Red, White and Blue Potato Salad

1 cup chopped green onions, divided
1 cup sour cream
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup white wine vinegar
4 teaspoons Dijon mustard
2 teaspoons sugar
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper

1 pound unpeeled small or baby red-skinned potatoes

1 pound small purple or blue potatoes, peeled
1 pound unpeeled small white creamer or White Rose potatoes

2 cups cooked fresh peas, or one 10-ounce package frozen, thawed
1 1/2 cups crumbled blue cheese (about 6 ounces)

preparation

Whisk 1/2 cup green onions and next 7 ingredients in medium bowl. Cover and chill dressing.

Do ahead: Can be made 1 day ahead. Keep chilled.

Place all potatoes in large saucepan. Add enough water to cover by 1 inch. Sprinkle with salt. Bring to boil, reduce heat to medium, and boil until tender, 10 to 15 minutes (time will vary depending on size and variety of potatoes). Drain and cool to room temperature.

Cut potatoes into 1/2-inch-thick slices and place in large bowl. Add dressing, peas, and blue cheese; toss gently. Cover and chill at least 2 hours and up to 1 day.

Sprinkle potato salad with paprika and remaining 1/2 cup green onions.

Bone Suckin' Dirty Hopping John Risotto

Ingredients:

Bone Suckin' Seasoning and Rub, 2 Tbsp.
Bone Suckin' Beef Jerky, 4 pieces cut up and soaked in water
Bone Suckin' Habanero Sauce, 1 tsp.
Chicken Livers, 1-16 ounce container, fresh or frozen
Peanut Oil, 1/4 cup
Butter, 1 1/2 sticks cut up into Tbsp pieces
Yellow Onions, 8 medium chopped
Flour, 2 cups All Purpose
Sea Salt, 1 1/4 tsp.
Black-eyed Peas, 1-16 ounce bag, frozen
Red Onion, 1 finely chopped
Celery, 1/4 cup finely chopped
Garlic, 1 Tbsp. minced
Arborio Rice, 2 1/2 cups
White Wine, 1/2 cup
Chicken Stock, 8 cups
Lemon Juice, 1/4 cup fresh
Black Pepper, 1 tsp.
Parsley, 3 Tbsp.

Directions:

In a sealable bag mix 2 cups of flour and 2 Tbsp. of Bone Suckin' Seasoning. Place livers in the bag and shake to coat the livers. Place oil in a frying pan and heat to medium, place livers in pan and cook about 8 minutes, turning the livers so they are thoroughly cooked.Let livers cool and then chop them coarsely, set aside.

In a skillet put in 2 Tbsp. of butter, bring to a medium heat; add yellow onions and sea salt. Cook onions slowly, until they are golden, about 20 to 25 minutes. Reserve 1/2 cup of caramelized onions in a bowl and set aside.

While onions are caramelizing, simmer frozen black-eyed peas in 2 cups of water in a 2 qt. sauce pan until just tender, about 15 minutes and drain peas in a colander.

Cook red onions and celery in 2 Tbsp. of butter in a 5-6 qt. pot over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until softened. Add garlic and cook about 1 minute. Add rice and stir 1 minute. Stir in wine and cook 2 minutes. Add caramelized onions, chopped livers, black-eyed peas, Bone Suckin' Habanero Sauce and 4 cups of chicken stock. Briskly simmer uncovered over moderate heat for 15 to 20 minutes. Stir occasionally until most of the liquid is absorbed and risotto is creamy. Add remaining 4 cups of chicken stock and continue to cook for another 15 to 20 minutes. Add remaining 8 Tbsp. of butter and lemon juice and stir until butter is incorporated.

Divide risotto among 8 shallow bowls and sprinkle with remaining onions and bits of beef jerky and parsley. Served with a salad and bread. Serves 6.

hey guys, sorry to bore but it's the same old view from my room again, but this time it's special because of the rain and haze! this is a blend of 6 RAW images, which really surprised me (and my com) with the massive file size. the sunset was bright RED, but i failed to capture it accurately, and i think that i couldn't have really tried anything else except maybe ND filters or polarizers? pretty glad though, this was the first and only bracketed shot i had time to do before the colour soon vanished behind the thick haze. for those who are into landscapes, seascapes and shooting into the sun and stuff, do try shooting in RAW cos you get a LOT more tonal details (16bit vs 8bit in JPEG) to play around with while editing. so that means you can salvage lots of highlight and shadow detail which is especially useful in HDR :) for this one i tried not to overdo it like how i usually do.

my dear condominium is probably going to be on en-bloc soon. it's the only place i have ever lived, and i really love the place. the wind, sea views and the peace of marine parade are things i wouldn't want to part with. but they say change is the only constant, so i can only look ahead, and cherish memories which i hold dear to my heart. i think this is the best way.

Fall Colors

Well I got to go out and test my new lens this yesterday. The Tokina 11-16 f2.8. I have been wanting this lens for a long time and I am totally happy with this purchase. The UWA makes taking these great landscapes totally worth it. I can almost sit right under one tree and capture an entire other tree because of how wide this is. I know this lens has been on the market for awhile and lots of people have used it but it is one you really should have in your bag. I also like this a little better than fisheyes is that there is very little distortion at the wide mark. Now you don't get the field of view (only 104° vs 180° on a 10.5mm fisheye) but it was good enough for me. The other disadvantage of the fisheye that I could see is the lack of a front filter attachment. I was able to use a circular polarizer in these shots and had okay results. Same for an ND once I get one. To me that was worth it in the end. Enjoy the photos.

Memories of Spring: After the Rain

This is a dogwood tree in bloom, fresh from a week's worth of rain.

It's been raining since last weekend and the weather forecast predicts more rain through Saturday. I'd very badly wanted to test the latest addition to my camera bag, so yesterday when the rain had let up I dashed outside.

The area of Central Park that I'd wanted to go to was closed off, so I was forced to wander. Luckily I chanced upon some dogwoods. This one in particular is special, as white dogwoods are quite common in my experience but these pink ones are a bit more rare (although you wouldn't know that from a Google Image search).

This image has become my new favorite and instantly replaced my previous desktop background. It almost tempted Janelle to change hers, as well.

Shot with an Olympus E-520 and Leica D Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH lens (lens designed by Leica and manufactured by Panasonic, using glass elements from Olympus Zuiko and Sigma), with lens hood and a Hoya DMC Pro1 UV filter equipped. This was taken hand-held with IS mode 1 enabled. This is an uncropped picture; maximum resolution has been scaled down to 1600x1200 for upload. This is a camera-derived JPEG that has not been subject to further post-processing. The following settings were used on-camera: "vivid" color scheme; saturation, contrast, and sharpness at +1; white balance set to overcast; center-weighted metering.

Thoughts on the lens: My copy seems to front-focus, or at the very least, gives the camera some trouble when it comes to autofocusing (that, or it's proof that Olympus puts mind-reading chips into their Zuiko Digital lenses and this one lacks it, because those lenses autofocus perfectly by comparison). However, the results are quite stunning when the focus is correct.

When it comes to flowers I would not say that it's any better or worse than the Zuiko Digital 50mm f/2.0 Macro lens (although I didn't buy this intending for it to be a flower lens). This and the next few pictures from this lens will be flower/plant shots, but this was intended to be a people lens. But when a nature photographer gets something new, you know what the first order will be...

Performance-wise I find the bokeh to be pleasing. More importantly, the lens is incredibly sharp. Viewing pictures with this lens even at 100% reveals incredibly well-defined lines and sharp images, even when pictures are taken at f/1.4. The only other lens I own that is able to deliver such sharp images wide open is the Zuiko Digital 50mm f/2.0 Macro lens, which is legendary for its sharpness. The size and weight do not feel excessive to me (which is a complaint that's been mentioned by a few), and the lens feels solidly built. I don't know if it can produce results that would please the Leica purists, but I am very impressed with what this lens can do and look forward to taking it through many different scenarios.

Janelle Impromptu Modeling 01 (Summilux Test)

This is one of the first shots trialing the Leica D Summilux 25mm f/1.4 for environmental portraiture. This was an impromptu session for Janelle (so there's no makeup!) but she good-naturedly put up with it, and I'm rather pleased with the end results.

Outfit and makeup information is unavailable, as there was no special preparation made for this outing.

No flash info, as only ambient lighting was used.

Shot with an Olympus E-520 and Leica D Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH lens, with a Hoya DMC Pro1 UV lens filter and lens hood equipped. This was shot hand-held with IS mode 1 enabled. This is an uncropped image that has been resized down to 1200x1600 for upload. This is a camera JPEG that has not been subject to any further post-processing. The following settings were used on-camera: "portrait" color scheme; sharpness and contrast at +1; saturation at -1; white balance set to auto; pattern metering mode.

For dudes who remove the IR filter from their camera or custom chip their AI/S lenses this might not be a big deal, but this was the first time that I encountered my gear with a hacksaw.

The Manfrotto 725B comes with the standard Manfrotto QR (quick releaseplate) and I wanted it replaced with an Arca-Swiss type plate.

I salvaged the AS-plate from my Giottos ballhead (I'm expecting better ones from Really Right Stuff any day now). Taking the Manfrotto plate off was easy; it is attached with a single screw. But...

The Manfrotto QR plate has a groove and the stud has two matching notches. The Giottos plate doesn't have a groove and letting it rest on the notches alone didn't seem a good idea.
So I took a hacksaw, sawed off the notches and smoothened the stud with my Dremel. The stud seems to be made from aluminium so no need to paint as it won't rust.

Not a very impressive mod maybe, but I'm still very happy with the result. It wasn't necessary - I'm only using the 725B for my D40 - but I like to standardize and having the ability to put any of my bodies on any of my tripods without attaching other plates is something that I like. All I need now is a nicer plate for the D40 - the one I have mounted on it right now is not the most handsome in the world.

by far one of the best adventures with lenore yet; we always go for nature walks, and this one was a good two and a half hours away from us, but totally worth the drive. flume gorge is absolutely beautiful, and our trip to the top of cannon mountain (pics to follow) was equally as amazing.

i'm so happy that lenore enjoys doing things like this; a simple retreat into nature with a lunch we made, our cameras, and a nice day. we don't need no stinkin' citified summer camp! we don't need no stinkin' cemetary! we've got the entire new england range of forests, gorges, sanctuaries, beaches and preserves to enjoy our time together.

Lensbaby Filter Adapter

I've been enjoying the use of my 77mm B+W 10-stop ND filter, but so far have been unable to use it on my Lensbaby Composer. I realize LB just came out with a step-up ring, but it's overpriced in my opinion. The problem I have with this filter is that it's too dark to use the camera's viewfinder. I find myself constantly screwing it on and off to focus and recompose shots, which is tiresome.

I machined these parts out of PVC on the lathe. The ring in the top photo is held on the lens with a .025" thick flange between the front bezel and the focus ring. It will stay permanently attached to the lens even when I'm not using the filter. It has the added benefit of remedying the sloppy fit of the lensbaby's focus ring.

The ring in the bottom photo allows me to drop my filter in, and slide it over the ring attached to the lens. The fit of the two rings is tight enough to keep the filter from falling off, but still free enough to allow me to quickly take it on and off.

Problem solved!

DIY Star Filter

A quick and easy star filter I build. While you can create the effect by holding the wire mesh directly in front of the lens, a ring to keep in place makes it easier to take the photos.

I made this in less than half an hour. I had some wire mesh, an old plastic cup that fit over my camera lens, and a roll of masking tape,

Just make a ring that fits over the barrel of the lens (this is a little tight around the barrel, but it would be a bit better if it was a little loose), with an edge that stops just in front of the glass, place the wire mesh on that edge, then tape it securely to the ring.

Then take a few sample photos. Probably not as good as the ones you can buy, but it's hard to argue with free and working.
