Measuring final drive backlash

Measuring final drive backlash

I'm rebuilding the back half of my motorcycle. This is the "Final drive" and is the achilles heel of BMW shaft-drive motorcycles. They're incredibly well built and reliable motorcycles, but these final drives fail in large numbers due to bearing failure. The big bearing you see here bears the load of the rear wheel in a single-sided swingarm configuration. There is a smaller, conical bearing on the other side of this, and together, they keep the axle running straight. There is a pinching pressure between these two bearings. It's a bit like the headset or wheel on a bicycle. If you have the bearings too tight, they fail from wear, and if they're too loose, they fail from impacting and denting. Mine was loose. The problem with the design is that it takes a lot of time and patience to measure and adjust the pressure, so they don't get done right at the factory and they fail.

So this is a rig I came up with to measure the backlash. This is the slop between the crown gear and the pinion that connects to the driveshaft. It affects how much total slop there is in the driveline before the gears engage.
