Anne,

I love you until the stars collapse...

These words are written on the back of napkin. They shot themselves out of the dark and so here they are.

I am watching the coffee lose heat as steam billows out of the paper cup and causes the oils from the grounded beans to swirl along the surface. The time on my wrist watch reads 9:15. It's a woman watch; actually, it is yours. I don't wear it, but I keep it in my coat pocket. You left it on the end table the morning I drove you to the airport after Thanksgiving.

It was broken when I found it, the hands weren't moving so I had it repaired at Sears. Why not. Because of your absence, I am collecting whatever keepsakes of you that I can find because memories are not enough. I feel closer to you having with your watch with me. It's a physical reminder of what your wrist felt like.

I hate this kind of sentimentality, but I realize that it's also what drives me.

There's a crack in the glass across it's face. The fissure is significant enough to cause refractions in direct light in the same way that your earrings do. I'm looking at the watch right now; I already know what time it is.

That night, we drank a bottle of Evan Williams late. I had tackled you into bed. I was clumsy and drunk. I remember that you struck it on the corner of the lamp table. In the silence of 2:30, I heard the crack and looked up from your collarbone, “What was that?” I remember saying.
“I think it's my watch,” you said.
I reached for your wrist and undid the strap. Setting it down on the table, I said I was sorry.
“No. Don't worry about it.”
We talked a lot that night, but these few lines are what I remember the most.

Last night, I couldn't sleep so I turned on the television and watched a documentary about the universe on PBS until around five. You know, the universe fascinates me. You have always known this about me. I am in love with the unknowable.

It's vast, the endless black implies mysteries that can never be known for fact. It has to be this way. To understand , reach and prove each facet of is beyond any human lifetime. We know what the universe in words, we can break it into its basic elements even – giant clouds of burning carbon, freezing bodies of nitrogen, neutrons, quarks, radiation clouds, massive gravitons and gravity wells, dark matter, anti-matter, positrons. In the end, what do these things tell me? It's only by my imagination that they exist.

What exists, at this moment, on this planet, in this place, in this mind and body, at this time, 9:17, what they all are, is you.

I love you until the stars supernova and collapse in on themselves, become white dwarfs, neutron stars, black holes: exhausted bodies that churn for no other reason than to be compelled to, for the simple fact that if they did not, they would forget their existence.

The universe stretches over every thing physical. If there is such a thing as a heart for everything physical, then it is a black hole. It is in constant motion, collecting, absorbing, distorting thousands of stars billions of miles in diameter as if solar systems were as minute as swirls of coffee vapor. They roam forever in darkness as entities of infinite force and attraction. Relativity, space, time, everything is powerless before each one; they lose themselves at the event horizon. The only resistance is if it encountered another with an even greater force and an even greater pull.

If such a thing were to happen between two forces of this magnitude, I believe the universe would end.

If loving you is like this then so be it. Because no physical being can resist you. By knowing of your existence, it's inevitable that I'd find myself here. I am compelled to, for the simple fact that if I was not, I would forget my existence.

The event horizon is the sleeve that marks the boundary of a black hole. It is a point of no return because at this boundary, all paths away from it disappear. If I were to fall into one, I would seem to slow down until I am frozen. If I were to fall into one, my light would more vivid in color, yet dimmer in brightness until I am so vivid that I cannot be seen anymore. Maybe only by touch will you know that I am still there. This is by your perception.

By my own perception, I would not notice any of these things. I will not experience the slowing down. I will see my own constant light and color. These things would not change. However, it would be impossible for me determine when I crossed and all my paths away from you disappeared. I am just in it, not knowing how or when I arrived. If I don't know, then so be it.

If loving you is like this then so be it.

All the scientists, astronomers, physicist, mathematicians, they were not talking about the universe. They were talking about you. The universe, with all its mysteries, I could take all of their ideas and theories and support them, even prove them, through you.

The coffee's lukewarm now, and I'm looking at the watch again. It's only 9:40. Twenty mi

Face Transplant in France

Face Transplant in France

Amiens University Hospital, via Reuters

A woman who received a partial face transplant was taken from the operation in Amiens, as shown in this image released Friday in Lyon.

December 3, 2005
Dire Wounds, a New Face, a Glimpse in a Mirror
By CRAIG S. SMITH

LYON, France, Dec. 2 - The world's first person to wear a new face awoke Monday, 24 hours after her operation in the northern city of Amiens, and looked in the mirror.

The swollen nose, lips and chin she saw there were not her own - those had been ripped from her head by her pet Labrador in May - but for the 38-year-old woman, whose face had become a raw, lipless grimace, they were close enough. She took a pen and paper and wrote for the doctors, "Merci."

On Friday, those doctors defended their rush to give the woman a partial face transplant just months after her disfigurement, despite the enormous risks of death and psychological difficulties. They dismissed objections that they were bent on glory at the expense of the patient, whose identity is being withheld at her request.

"We are doctors," said Jean-Michel Dubernard, who led the transplant team and who helped carry out the first hand transplant in Lyon seven years ago. "We had a patient with a very severe disfigurement that would have been extremely difficult, if not impossible, to repair with classic surgery."

In a news conference at Edouard-Herriot Hospital in Lyon, where the patient was transferred for monitoring of immunosuppressive therapy that will continue throughout her life, the doctors explained how the woman's gruesome wounds almost immediately made her a candidate for the world's first face transplant. They heatedly denied local news reports that quoted her estranged teenage daughter as saying she was suicidal, raising questions about whether she was psychologically stable enough for the operation.

Dr. Dubernard has faced such accusations before. Clint Hallam, the man he selected for the world's first hand transplant, refused to keep up with the lifelong drug regimen required to suppress immune responses, along with regular exercises to train the new hand. After three years he had the hand removed.

According to Dr. Dubernard, the woman had quarreled with her daughter one evening in May at her home in the northern city of Valenciennes, and the daughter had left to spend the night at her grandmother's.

The woman was agitated, he said, and took a sleeping pill. At some point during the night, he said, she arose and stumbled through the house, encountering the dog.

Local news reports have suggested that the woman, who is divorced, fell unconscious and that the dog chewed and clawed her face in an attempt to revive her. But Dr. Dubernard said the dog had been adopted from the local pound and was known to be aggressive. The dog has since been destroyed.

Shortly after the woman's injury, Dr. Bernard Devauchelle, head of face and jaw surgery at Amiens University Hospital, decided that the woman was a candidate for a partial face transplant and sent an urgent request for help in locating a donor to the French Biomedicine Agency, which oversees the allocation of organs for transplant in France. The window for a successful transplant was narrow, the doctors said, because the wound was developing scar tissue.

Dr. Benoit Lengele, a Belgian surgeon who assisted in the transplant, said the woman would have required at least three or four traditional plastic surgery operations to rebuild her face with skin flaps from other parts of her body, but the results would never have been aesthetically or functionally satisfactory.

Meanwhile, the woman's injury had made it difficult for her to talk or even drink and eat, because food and liquid spilled easily from her mouth. The doctors said her ability to open her jaw was also progressively diminishing as her wounded tissue stiffened. In July, Dr. Devauchelle consulted with Dr. Dubernard, who visited the woman in early August.

"The moment she removed her mask, which she always wore, I had no more hesitation," Dr. Dubernard said Friday.

No information was given about the donor, a brain-dead woman whose anonymity is protected by law. She was located on Saturday at a hospital in the northern city of Lille, 85 miles from Amiens.

Brain-dead patients in France are presumed to be organ donors unless they have made explicit provisions to the contrary, and approval by next of kin is not normally required. But given the delicacy of the case, the donor's family was consulted about the possible harvesting of part of the donor's face during the initial interviews that are undertaken to ensure that the deceased had not given instructions preventing organ donations.

A special team of psychologists worked with the family on Saturday afternoon as the doctors involved were notified that a potential donor had been found. By midnight Saturday, Dr. Devauchelle, who led the surgical team, was in Lille to begin harvesting the

Buried By Sprawl

Buried By Sprawl

As the sign reads:

Fort Wyman and defense of the railhead

Fort Wyman was the first of two artillery field fortifications built by the Union army at Rolla, signifying the importance of the railroad terminus to the northern war effort in Missouri.
The South West Branch of the Pacific Railroad of Missouri (better known later as the "Frisco" line) reached Rolla by the beginning of 1861. As a railhead in the Ozarks on the direct line between St. Louis and Springfield, the young town became strategically important when war broke out in Missouri. Col. Franz Sigel's troops seized Rolla in a bloodless coup on June 14, 1861, as part of Gen. Nathaniel Lyon's plan to control Missouri's river and railroad network. Federal troops remained for the duration of the war.
The railhead was a critical supply depot and link in the federal army's line of communications. Beginning with Lyon's campaign in 1861 and continuing into 1865, Rolla was the primary forward supply point for Union armies in southern Missouri and northern Arkansas. Quartermasters, soldiers and civilian employees transferred thousands of tons of war material, food and forage from railcars to warehouses and wagons. They supported soldiers as far away as Pea Ridge and Prairie Grove, Ark., in 1862, and during Gen. Sterling Price's Expedition in 1864. Just the routine supply of the post at Springfield was enormous.
Long trains of ponderous army wagons left Rolla almost daily. Each carried 4.500 pounds of freight at two and a half miles per hour. The effective range of supply by wagon from the railhead was about 200 miles. To accomodate the burgeoning freight operation, the army built warehouses, loading docks, forage sheds, blacksmith shops and wagon repair facilities. The investment was enough for the army to begin a second fortification in 1863. Fort Dette stood on ground north of town on what is now the campus of the University of Missouri-Rolla, and was named after John F.W. Dette, the officer who supervised construction.
No Confederate force ever seriously threatened Rolla. Gunners at Fort Wyman fired the fort's 32-pound canons only in practice, on ceremonial occasions including the Fourth of July, and to announce federal victories at Fort Henry and Donelson, Tenn., and at Pea Ridge, Ark., in 1862, and the surrender of Gen. Robert E. Lee's army in Virginia in 1865. The guns tolled every half-hour in memory of Abraham Lincoln on April 19, 1865.
United States troops remained in Phelps County through the summer of 1865, dismantling the forts and shipping military surplus to St. Louis. The remaining government property required only a corporal's guard of three men when the post at Rolla was abolished in August of 1865.
The site of Fort Wyman was a local landmark for many years. Col. John B. Wyman and the fort named after him are remembered in modern times in the names of a street, subdivision, elementary school and a church. As late as the 1990's the outline of the fort was plainly visible from the air, its rectangular shape and rounded gun positions looking much like a baseball field. In recent years, modern development has destroyed all visible traces of Fort Wyman.

Refugees at Rolla

Fort Wyman and the Union garrison at the railhead represented a safe haven for thousands of uprooted people who had fallen victim to a regional calamity that had engulfed a large portion of Missouri.
Refugees from southern Missouri and northern Arkansas converged on Rolla during the war. They had been forced from their homes due to unpopular opinions about the war or because of hostile neighbors. Many of these homeless families left farmsteads reduced to ruin after armies of either side had passed through. Many had been preyed upon by armed bands of guerrillas and bandits of every character.
When their men away in the armies, increasing numbers of destitute and starving women, children and aged civilians made their way to Rolla. Rations issued to them by army quartermasters at the railhead were a matter of life and death for hundreds of refugees who would have otherwise starved.

My wife used this as a show n tell and dropped it on the way home, this was a while back and it has been broken ever since. In this photo it needs a lot of cleaning and repair along with fixing the engines.

Hammers and dollies

Hammers and dollies

Cars may little resemble those of a century or more ago, but the tools used to shape and repair sheetmetal haven’t changed at all. The tools are so basic as to be essentially identical to those from the carriage building age, and their use reflects their genesis. Anyone can pick them up, as an apprentice would have done, but mastery comes slow indeed.

New and used individual tools and sets are widely available, and we know master metalshapers who can form accurate, intricate panels using a bare handful of them. For the novice, however, you will be better off with the specialized, specific tools for your task, rather than trying to make a slightly different one work.

Hammers are, well, hammers. Spoons and dollies are generally used with them to modify the force of the hammer blow. Spoons are used on top of the sheetmetal surface to distribute and direct the strike; dollies are held behind, so the metal is shaped over them. Spring steel slapping spoons (slappers) and slapping files are also used directly, like a hammer but with a much larger contact area. Simple in theory, a little more complex in execution.

The first task is in determining which tools you need for your particular task. Beyond “heavier dollies for heavier sheetmetal,” that’s one of the places experience enters into it. A fairly complete set might contain a dozen or more hammers; a dozen dollies and half a dozen slappers and spoons. A beginner will be well served by erring on the side of lightness in hammers; conversely, heavier dollies, usually well over two pounds, are very helpful for controlling your work. We’re presuming you’ll be working in steel; tools for aluminum are generally lighter, and many people keep separate dollies for aluminum, but that’s another subject.

There are two basic techniques: Hammer-on-dolly, and hammer-off-dolly. Hammer-on-dolly is exactly that: Squishing the metal between the hammer and dolly. A basic hammer-on task would be flattening out a dent; this also stretches the metal being hammered, so going slow is vital, or it will become too thin, which has the unfortunate side effect of pushing it up around the worked area.

Hammer-off is more complex, and relies on the sheetmetal’s inherent elasticity. The dolly backs up a low spot, while you hammer a high spot immediately next to it, both flattening the high spot and causing the dolly to rebound into the low, ideally flattening them both.

Weekend classes in beginning sheetmetal work are held all over the place, and we can’t recommend them enough. Ring up your local restorer or bodyshop, and they’ll get you started. Metalshapers.org also has extensive online tutorials that will give you a sense of what you’re getting into.

Hammers and dollies are relatively cheap; you can get a large, high quality set for a few hundred dollars, with enough tools to get any routine job done. Don’t skimp, though, and look for forged tools from the US, Germany or England. There aren’t many of us who can’t find free sheetmetal, and you will probably want sandbags, basic woodworking tools and scrap wood, as well. Even if you’re starting from scratch will all of this, it would be nearly impossible to spend more than three figures, which is not a bad investment, considering you’re taking on a craft that will serve you for a lifetime, and pay for itself with the first completed project.

1986 Pearl Waters

1986 Pearl Waters

From "News from Home", Tulsa Boys' Home newsletter (1986):

August 18, 1986, marked a special day for a special lady. Mrs. Pearl Waters, founder of the Women's and Junior Women's Associations of Tulsa Boys' Home, celebrated her 92nd birthday. In 1938, Mrs. Waters and a group of her friends formed the "Buttercups", an organization dedicated to buttering bread for the boys at Tulsa Boys' Home.

From the "Buttercups" evolved the Women's Association. Original board members included Mrs. Herb B. Smith and Mrs. Waters as President. The Junior Women's Association followed in 1939. These two groups donated their time and talents to providing a homelike atmosphere for Tulsa Boys' Home children. They raised funds to repair cracked plaster in The Home, install proper lighting facilities, purchase beds and linens, and replace the boy's shabby clothing.

Today's mission has not changed significantly. The Women's Association is devoted to maintaining a building fund, redecorating and furnishing the boy's cottages, contributing to the teenager's RACE Program, and other special need projects. The Junior Women are actively involved in the boy's holiday and birthday celebrations, serving as aides in the summer LUV Program, donating athletic equipment, and tutoring the students with special educational needs.

For the past 48 years, Mrs. Waters and those women who have followed her have been responsible for meeting many of the needs of the boys at Tulsa Boys' Home. Mrs. Waters, Happy, Happy Birthday and many, many thanks for all that you and the Women and Junior Women's Associations have done for Tulsa Boys' Home.

Monthly Scavenger Hunt - November '08
Raindrop(s)

Guess who just got a brand spankin' new dual flush toilet installed.

I'm a little bit excited because the landlord has agreed to let me repair/replace some stuff at my own expense, in exchange for not putting the rent up, and replacing the old loo is something they'd always been too slack to be bothered getting done.

The old one wouldn't flush properly unless you held the button down for about 10 seconds, and I always felt guilty for wasting water (with the water restrictions due to the drought and all) because it used so much, but now I can do the guilt-free half flush. Woohoo!!!

Day 3 - Toilet Repair (June 17, 2007)

Day 3 - Toilet Repair (June 17, 2007)

Taking on two additional "picture a day" projects was supposed to give me an excuse to get out of the house more, but I left for a total of thirty minutes today only because I needed a larger wrench to fix the downstairs toilet. On the upside, the toilet is fixed for the first time in years, and you don't have to hold the lever down to get it to flush properly anymore. Yes, I feel that this is an accomplishment.

  • (DIESEL ENGINES) Diesel engines are more economical on fuel than petrol engines and generally last longer between major overhauls.

  • (Diesel engines) Bloated versions of the motors they are putting in cars nowadays. The planners of MATEP chose to install six of these in the plant. SCL GE U18B locomotive # 330, plus other engines are located in the locomotive repair & maintenance area of the SCL (former ACL) railroad yard at Saint Petersburg, Florida, 1974

SCL GE U18B locomotive # 330, along with other engines are basking in the late afternoon sunlight in the locomotive repair & manitenance area of the SCL railroad yard (former ACL yard) at Saint Petersburg, Florida, 1974. After the 1967, merger between the SAL & ACL, the SCL acquired many Alco RS-3s, as seen in this photo. The small silver colored metal building to the far right is an old locomotive hood that is used as a work shop and tool room. There are many such hoods located throughout the yard that are used for the same purpose. If you look to the far left in the back ground you can observe part of the locomotive sand tower. Originally in this area a large shed covered the locomotive repair & maintenance tracks that steam locomotives used, however, the shed lasted in service until the mid 1960's, in the diesel era. Pieces of coal were still found in this area along with the oil soaked ballast due to fuel oil, lube oil and grease spills. In the foreground on what appears to be a sidewalk are located small concrete pads previously used to mount steel columns that supported the roof of the old locomotive maintenance shed. The old shed reminded me of a small passenger station platform shed used in service at many depots. Most of the property in this area is now occupied by a large Lowe's store and parking lot.

Hike to top of Mt. Juneau

Hike to top of Mt. Juneau

Our skiff sank and had to have the engine repaired in Juneau. During the down time, several of us hiked to the top of both Mt. Juneau and Mt. Roberts. This is OldManTravels in his college days, on top of Mt. Juneau.

Far below is the Gastineau Channel which separates Juneau from Douglas Island. There are no highways to Juneau (the state capital at present), so the only way in is by boat or plane.

We fished off Admirality Island most of the summer and spent each night aboard the boat while anchored in Hawk Inlet (where there was a cannery where we unloaded our daily salmon catch each evening). This was the only trip we made to Juneau and we only made this trip to have the skiff diesel engine repaired.

I operated the skiff that summer and loved being in a small boat on my own. For many of the sets I would pull the net in close to a shoreline, where I could see the wildlife along the beaches.

Many stories I could tell like the time we caught a 16' basking shark in our purse seine net and many stories I wouldn't repeat.
