(18) Portfolio #2 Stroke of Insight (week 12) 1. I chose to go with a balanced symmetrical composition. The globe is my force that is centered with the candles on either side balancing the photo; thus, allowing everything to fall equally away from the center of my picture. It was shot horizontally to connote serenity which complements the lit candles and the atmosphere. The candles were purposely placed at a slight angle because I wanted them to embrace the globe. The camera was placed on a tripod and was level with the candles and slightly above the globe. 2. I wanted a shallow depth of field to focus on the candles and blur the globe. The background consists of a smooth, dark red wall. Tints are made by adding white to a color and the lit, white candles create that soft dark pink hue above the globe. The lit candles create a nice contrast in tone and color as the photo drifts from light to a darker background. The smooth lines of the candle also contrast with the sphere-shaped globe. All of these points: from the color of the wall, globe, candles and the two glows that are emitted from the candles above the globe were chosen specifically for my story which is explained in #5. 3. I photographed this scene at different times of the day to coordinate with the lighting to observe how it changes the photo. Lighting definitely can do that. I understand completely why the golden hours of shooting (sunrise and sunset) are called the golden hours. Shooting this at night made the photo too dark and during the noon hour created sun spots on the wall. This photo was taken early evening and with natural light coming in from the window. I diffused the lighting with drawn shades to eliminate glare on the wall. The lit candles add a dimension to the photo that was interesting. It creates a soft light and the reflection changed the color composition, also. 4. Technical challenges included working with lit candles. At night, I had a problem with two blue tinges from the lit candles showing up on my photos. Using a tripod (my first time with a tripod) and angling the camera down on the scene helped alleviate some of that, but still felt the photo was too dark despite moving my ISO to 200. Any higher than that made my photo grainy. Photographing at early evening, my settings were adjusted accordingly for a better shot. My Fstop was at 2.8 to allow for shallow depth of field. My white balance was on cloudy and the ISO was at 80 because I had enough natural light. My shutter speed was 25 to coordinate with the lighting also. I used the tripod and 2 second timer mostly because it allowed for a better focus manually on the candles. 5. My story: My pathophysiology teacher, Sue, read an excerpt from a book, “My Stroke of Insight”, which tied in very nicely with her lecture on strokes. It piqued my interest, and I decided to read it. This book is what I based my photo on, but it forced me to be creative and go outside my comfort zone! I am hoping after you read my story that my photo is not too eccentric and could be applied to the cover of this book. The is a real life story about a 37 year old, Jill Bolte Taylor, a Harvard-trained brain scientist who has a blood vessel explode in her brain. As an inquisitive neuroanatomist, she recognizes what is happening to her and watches her mind completely deteriorate to the point where she cannot walk, talk, read, write or recall any aspect of her life. She recovers, which is amazing, and writes this book of her journey through this process. She describes the brain as your universe (thus the world globe) and how her brain digresses as the hemorrhage (thus the dark red wall color) affects the right and left sides of her brain (the two hues above the candles). The insight (the lit candles) that Jill gains into the unique functions of her left brain and right brain as she shifts away from normal reality is amazing. Jill experiences herself “at one with the universe” in the absence of her left brain’s neural circuitry. Jill now tours the nation to help others how to rebuild their brains from trauma and maximize quality of life for them and those with normal brains to better understand how to cultivate our minds. Jill is quoted: “I believe the more time we spend running our deep inner peace circuitry, then the more peace we will project into the world, and ultimately the more peace we will have on the planet.” Planet 2 Stroke A rare unseen photo of planet 2 stroke This photo was taken with a Canon Powershot A95 looking down the spark plug hole of my Aprilia RS125. The engine is a Rotax 122. I manually focused the camera and then fired the flash up through the exhaust port while the exhaust was removed. I thought the result from produced from the built up carbon and patterns in the piston crown looked pretty neat so I produced this photo. Schwalbe Marathon Winter on Dahon Helios It's been a long time coming for these Schwalbe Marathon Winter tires. The search for them started back in Sept and they finally arrived in Dec. With the Dahon 20 inch wheel size, they are practically impossible to install. An hour of wrestling and 2 broken tire tools later (Park Tools), they are finally on. I am really dreading the thought of having to wrestle these off when I swap them back out for the Marathon Racers when summer comes along. Not quite ready to roll in the snow/ice with them yet as as the studs need to be seated properly with 40km of pavement riding. it would be nice if Schwalbe worked the tires in at the factory. Oh yea, my stock MKS chain is practically locked in the gears with rust since I haven't ridden for over 3 weeks. I did not expect the salt to work thru the chain so quickly. I'll report back in a week or so on how they hold up in my daily commute to the station. Safe riding. Here's the bike that Todd sent to me right after we'd finished Cycle Japan (September of 2001). After nearly a year without a (traditional) bike that fits, I was now back in business. As soon as I had it reassembled I took her down to the river path and revved up to 50+ km/hr on the flats! After the recumbent, this bike felt like a rocket. Todd put this together so it's pretty much mix-n-match as far as parts go. The frame is a Schwinn from (I think) the late '70s. (I checked the head badge number against a database once and remember finding that it was one of the frames made in Japan for Schwinn.) In any case, here it is. Todd painted the frame black but the occasional rubbing of my right thigh against the frame wore the paint away. (I've got an unusual riding style.) I took this bike out the first week I had it and did an absurd 330km ride. Here's my journal entry from that day (September 16, 2001): Woke up early and was on the road at 3:40. I just love riding early in the morning. When I passed through Sabra’s town, Shiroishi, it was 5:05 and the faintest sliver of a moon was rising along with the planets in the pre-dawn sky. It was truly magical. Riding along the Ariake coast was gorgeous and I turned up the heat to raise my average speed so I could do my first 100 miles in under 5 hours, which I did (4:56). I popped a front spoke at 96 km, however, but the wheel held together. I later popped another spoke in front and one on the drive side of the rear wheel. My ride took me around the Unzen peninsula and back up 207, only I got lost and tried going up a few dead-end valley roads until I finally cut back across on 444. This meant unnecessarily climbing over a big hill in mid-day heat, but it was my own fault for going off course. Anyway, the combination of hills, heat, fatigue, and broken spokes make my return trip take more than two-and-a-half hours longer than the first half. In the morning I was wondering if it would be possible to ride 200 miles in under 10 hours but now I have my doubts. Even so, I still felt better when I got home than I did when I went to Nagasaki on the Stainless. I totaled 330 km and did my rear end ever feel it! Because of all the broken spokes, I upgraded the rims to Mavic MA-3s. The Look pedals were purchased at Iwai Cyclery in Kurume to complement the killer shoes I got on ultra-discount through Nashbar for only $26; the pedals were more like $90. That dual water bottle rack on the seat post never really worked. Any good bump would send the bottles flying out, which got old real fast. Like the wrist watch taped to the handlebars? DSCN0134 1984 Schwinn Le tour polo bike- Parts detail: Sugino 103BB, Shimano Deore DX crankset with a 34t FSA ring, Time ATAC pedals, Kalloy post, WTB Rocket saddle, 3T stem, Alum risers with Ourys, stock pitted headset, Dia compe brake lever and rear side pull brake. The rear wheel is a Nashbar double fixed to a Weinmann DP18 rim. The front hub is some random Japanese hub laced to a Mavic rim. Tires are Panaracer Paselas 700c X 28. Mallet was a carbon fiber ski pole with a 6" piece of UHPE for a mallet head and splash bar tape for comfort, control, and some style. It received a mallet wack from a opposing player (and one of my coworkers) and the shaft snapped in half. Oh, well I didn't think the carbon fiber shaft would last as long as it did which was almost 10 months of use. 26 X 1 3/8ths Schwinn S-5 (or S-6) 26 x 1 3/8ths is or was a common size but Schwinn being Schwinn had to do things their own way so the bead width on this wheel 597 mm is not the same as the standard 26 x 1 & 3/8ths 590 mm It's easy enough to get replacements but its kind of moot now since I intend to replace the wheels. The little black dots on the rim are pits made by rust. which don't reflect the light the way the chrome or nickel does. On the one hand it's a shame that this bike has more years than miles on it. On the other, it's to my benefit. 60s/70s Raleigh Mercury Frame Number 2766408. Does anyone know anything about this model. It seems to be rare. I can't find it in any catalogues. Original colour was "Coffee" a metallic red/brown. This bike is now being restored as a single speed with period components: Build date of frame has been established as Circa 1971 from the serial number. Components will be 27x1 1/4" wheels chrome rims recovered from and old Raleigh North Road bars Weinmann Centtre Pull brakes Raleigh "Heron" cottered chainset Lyotard pedals New Photo when its finished. BSA 20 The latest addition to the stable: a 1970s BSA 20 shopper bike. The chrome is in great nick, though the bronze paint has a lot of scratches and chips, and is crazed in places from age. Everything in working order, a very comfy bike. The serial number on the frame starts NB7, which would indicate it was built in Nottingham during February 1977. However the date stamp on the Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub is 70, which means it was made in 1970! So either Raleigh were using NOS hubs in 1977, or someone has fitted an older hub to the bike at some point...
