This is a Photoshop of a car that BMW could make: the 1 Series M Coupe CSL. CSL is synonymous with lightweight and fast in BMW-speak, and adding carbon-fiber body panels and light-weight racing seats to the already small 1 Series M Coupe would let the car live up to the moniker. Potentially, the price point would be around the $55,000 mark, which would undercut a base M3 by a few thousand with the bonus of having some added appeal for BMW heritage-minded consumers

This special edition limited-run car could use BMW's new single-series turbo N55 inline-six; with increased boost from that engine it could potentially pump out around 385 horses. An upgraded clutch would be used to handle this power, but since the brakes from the 1 Series M Coupe come from the M3, there would be no need to upgrade; nor would the six-speed transmission or limited-slip diff need to change. A fire extinguisher would be standard; just in case.

The carbon-fiber fenders and hood, as well as lightweight racing-style seats (including the back seats) shod with Alcantara would shave around 150 lbs off the standard cars already low 3,296 lb curb weight. Inside, an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel would set off the whole interior. Stylistically, new headlights give the whole car a retro look. Yellow fog lights, gold BBS rims, and a generous (and functional) rear wing complete the picture. In pure CSL heritage, a pinstripe in BMW Motorsports colors would run down the side, and every one of the limitedly-produced cars would be in Alpine White.

One can dream, but this would be a small investment on BMW’s part, and one that would allow them to have yet another halo car for fans to lust for. Each and every one would be financially viable, as the usually-expensive engine modifications could potentially come from only software tweaks. The free publicity and press would be worth its weight in gold…or carbon fiber. BMW, are you listening?
