Diana: The Secrets of Her Style
This sensitive and comprehensive chronicle of the late Princess Diana's meteoric rise and reign as a fashion star is lavishly illustrated with 125 photos by the world's top fashion photographers, and with ten original sketches created exclusively for the book. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to The Royal Marsden Cancer Fund.
Sleek and sophisticated like the princess herself, Diane Clehane's Diana: The Secrets of Her Style thoroughly analyzes the princess's role as an international fashion icon. Through interviews with Diana's designers and stylists, original sketches by her designers, and more than 100 photographs, Secrets details Diana's evolution from a dowdy, plain schoolgirl to a Versace-touting diva who harnessed the power of glamour to achieve humanitarian goals. Broken into four stages of development, Clehane's book interweaves behind-the-scenes anecdotes with Diana's public image. When the princess wore shimmering, crescent-shaped earrings to meet the leaders of Saudi Arabia, for example, the press reported that the earrings were an extravagant, costly gift from her hosts. In truth, the striking accessory was merely costume jewelry she bought for less than $40 at a popular department store. Another telling insight comes from Diana's hairdresser, Richard Dalton, who styled the princess's coif differently for the state opening of Parliament in 1984: "It knocked the Queen off the front page," and stayed in the headlines for days afterwards. Subsequently, Diana and Dalton were careful about making any changes to her lush locks, for fear of taking limelight from the royals and creating political rifts. --Rebekah Warren

1984 Fashion of the Times
This is the cover for the August 1984 issue of the “New York Times Magazine” Fashion of the Times”. The lead article, “New Kind of Glamour”, was written by Carrie Donovan.
In this issue, Ms. Carrie Donovan highlights the fashions that were the “in” look for women…long skirts, men’s style wear, and bright colors.
In reading this issue, it adds credence to the statement that that classics are always in style regardless of year. Whereas “fashion”, per say, comes and goes and becomes dated. There are so many outfits in this issue of 27 years ago that would be perfect to wear today.

California Dreaming
"It is when I see their faces, that I long to photograph them. That is my fantasy life. They keep me dreaming." Paul Jasmin found some of the models through students at the college he teaches at in Pasadena and others are the children of friends of him who he has watched grow into adults. With his pictures, he tries to capture the dreams his subject harbour. Most of the photographs were shot in and around his apartment on Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, in a building that William Randolph Hearst bought as a love-nest for Marion Davies.
The photographs translate both Jasmin's emotional attachment to California, with its perfect weather, the pure light, and the population of dreamers, and the inspiration he gets from spending his time with young people.

An exploration of the dynamic and innovative architecture and interiors commissioned by Louis Vuitton. A prescient advocate of contemporary interiors and architecture, Louis Vuitton continues to encourage innovation and playfulness in the designs of their retail spaces without losing sight of the essence of luxury central to its identity. This process of designing places to display high-style objects has created a new venue for cutting-edge architecture and transformed city streetscapes.
This exploration of Louis Vuitton’s international stores, as well as industrial sites and unrealized projects, includes interviews with some of today’s most talented architects and designers who discuss the beautiful and complex structures they have produced in collaboration with Louis Vuitton. This book examines the physical aspects of these buildings as well as the ideas that went into their composition.
Acting as both a backdrop for luxurious retail goods and the physical manifestation of the brand, these spaces are a genre unto themselves that invite exploration. With luxurious finishes and unexpected textures, these fantastic buildings represent the intersection of fashion and interior design. The book includes interviews with Jun Aoki, Peter Marino, Christian de Portzamparc, David McNulty, and Christian Reyne.

RECESSION:: The Impact in the UK Middle Market Fashion Industry
The recession in 2008-2009 was the most debated subject universally caused by debts and over spending. The aim of the research scrutinizes the scale of the recession to the external market which ultimately reduces customer spending within clothing retailers. The investigation examines the collapse upon the middle market to which has been generally damaged. The primary and secondary research monitors and demonstrates the effects of both internal and external aspects of the recession that deteriorates in the recovery stages of the economy. These findings show the changes in the retailing environment which are triggered by recession, altering the infrastructures to tailor the needs of the consumer profile, that emerged from the credit crunch. Furthermore to this, the value retailers are advancing from the increasing boom as the middle market is declining. The balance of the aspects such as product, price, place, promotion, people, physical presence and evidence are incorporated to further lure consumers spending and footfall.

(11) For Lagerfeld
I talked to my advisor today.
I'm an economics major and I love it. I also love the art of fashion, yes the art. I do consider it an art form. Lets not even start on the criteria right now...
Anyway, i was at a loss of what I wanted to write about for my term paper. So I decided to take a risk. I decided after our talk to write about the up and coming high fashion mall in Bellevue, and why the high fashion industry is doing so well in this one isolated spot during a recession. Luxury goods in a recession?. Totally interesting to me but I'm freaking out. My advisor was supportive of my risk taking but i'm scared. I mean i've never written a term paper, and well, I want an A. Sometimes though its not about the grade this is college and this is the chance for me to take up what I really want to do and educate myself where I want to be educated. So here it goes, oh god...
Reinventing Luxury
This pic is from a fashion show that Kristen did at school. "Right at the beginning of the recession, they came out with the theme "Luxe," as in luxurious. I was soooooo mad that they were so out of touch and that they picked the most expensive theme for all of the students (and actually they changed the theme a few weeks before the show when they realized this, and didn't tell us). And so I decided to make it all out of garbage. This gown is comprised of curtains, tablecloths, sheets, old costume fabric, stuffing I got from a local floral shop that the flowers were shipped with for protection, and other things I found around the house. This out of touch experience with the fashion industry was a nice push in the direction of fashion recycling. Thank goodness for jerks :) *Modeling by Simi, Photography by Taylor Park

Waiting for Forever
WILL, THE QUIRKY STREET PERFORMER WITH A FREE SPIRIT AND A HEART OF PURE GOLD. THE OBJECT OF WILL'S LIFELONG AFFECTION IS EMMA,THE BEAUTIFUL YOUNG ACTRESS WHOM HE HAS NEVER STOPPED LOVING SINCE THEY WERE CHILDHOOD SWEETHEARTS. BUT WHEN THEY REUNITE, AND WILL GETS SWEPT UP IN EMMA'S COMPLICATED PAST?
Waiting for Forever is a film that's unlikely to elicit many neutral opinions; chances are you'll find it either cute 'n' quirky or cloying and annoying. At the center of this 2010 rom-com is the relationship between Will Donner (Tom Sturridge) and Emma Twist (Rachel Bilson). Friends since childhood, when she provided him with comfort and companionship following the traumatic death of his parents in a train crash, they've long since gone their separate ways--or so she thinks. Turns out that while Emma has been pursuing a career as an actress, Will has turned into a kind of peripatetic Peter Pan, only without the flying chops. A jobless (he earns spare change as a street juggler) dreamer and hopeless romantic who steadfastly refuses to engage with life's quotidian realities, he's been following Emma from place to place, a sort of benign stalker who has never had the nerve to approach or talk to her, preferring to hang back and worship her from afar. That changes when Emma returns to their Pennsylvania hometown, where her father (the reliable Richard Jenkins) is seriously ill and her ditzy mom (Bythe Danner) needs support. Encouraged by his well-adjusted banker brother (Scott Mechlowicz) and other friends, Will at last approaches her and confesses all. Complications ensue--including a credibility-defying, out-of-nowhere subplot involving Emma's L.A. boyfriend and an accidental homicide--but they do little to keep this tale from ending exactly as we expect it to. The only question involves whether you'll see "Willie" as a charming lost puppy who's never gotten over his parents' death and could use a hug, or as an infuriating ne'er-do-well who needs some sense slapped into him. The indie nu-folk music on the soundtrack leaves little doubt about where director James Keach and writer Steve Adams's sentiments lie. --Sam Graham

"The Last Kiss" is a hip romantic comedy about life, love, infidelity, forgiveness, marriage, friendship… and coming to grips with turning 30.
A remake of the Italian film L'Ultimo Bacio, The Last Kiss was largely ignored in theaters despite its Gen-X themes and appeal of star Zach Braff (Scrubs), who last made a splash in theaters with his similar twentysomething angst film Garden State. A drama about midlife crises (mostly for people approaching 30, that is), director Tony Goldwyn (A Walk on the Moon) has assembled a top-notch cast, but there's not enough likeability in the characters to care. Architect Michael (Zach Braff) is a commitmentphobe who wanders into a flirtation with coed Kim (Rachel Bilson) because he's gun-shy about settling down with his perfect girlfriend Jenna (Jacinda Barrett), who's expecting his child. His fellow pals face their own romantic crossroads; one (Michael Weston) desires to settle down with a woman who doesn't love him back; another (Eric Christian Olsen) can't find someone who just wants a meaningless fling like him; and the third (Casey Affleck), ponders leaving his weary wife who's constantly berating his shortcomings as a father. Most depressing is Jenna's mother (Blythe Danner), who's tired of feeling neglected by her stoic husband (Tom Wilkinson). Danner and Wilkinson are compelling as longtime marrieds who've lost their spark, but Braff's character is wholly unlikeable, even aside from his indiscretions. The bright spot is Bilson, in her first movie role, utterly adorable as the sexy college student who's got more parts vulnerability and sass than any stuck in the Other Woman role. There's some fine acting in The Last Kiss, but not enough character development to care about anything they're going through.
The DVD includes a commentary featuring cast members Braff, Barrett, Olsen, Bilson, and director Goldwyn, who all mainly hoot during Olsen's sex scenes and ogle Bilson's seductive dancing. Braff and Goldwyn also imitate Bilson's high-pitched speedchatter throughout, while Barrett educates the cast on the similarities between "the dingo ate my baby" and the O.J. Simpson case (don't ask). It's all the more entertaining compared to a separate commentary track with just Goldwyn and Braff, who mostly drones about the music he picked for the film (Remy Zero, Snow Patrol, Aimee Mann) and raves about the minimalist score, done by singer Michael Penn. And oh, they ogle Bilson's dancing in this one too. -- Ellen A. Kim

THE HISTORY OF FRENCH FASHION - THE HISTORY OF

Paris Fashion: A Cultural History
Paris has been the international capital of style for three hundred years. Although challenged by other fashion cities such as Milan, London and New York, Paris remains special. This fascinating book shows that the strength of the French fashion industry rests on the depth and sophistication of its fashion culture. Revised and updated, Paris Fashion is reprinted here in paperback for the first time. More than just a history of famous designers and changing styles, the book is about fashion as a cultural ideal and a social phenomenon. By focusing on a ‘case study’ of Paris, Steele provides brilliant insights into the significance of fashion in modern urban society.
The author, an internationally recognized authority on the history of fashion, is the author of many books, including Fashion and Eroticism, Women of Fashion: 20th-Century Designers, Fetish: Fashion, Sex & Power, and Fifty Years of Fashion: New Look to Now.y

"Revelation of Fashion" Mural by Napier Waller - Myer Emporium Mural Hall, Bourke Street, Melbourne
In 1931 Sidney Myer (1878 – 1934) Russian emigre turned Melbourne businessman and philanthropist decided to reinvigorate his store the Myer Emporium by redeveloping his flagship Bourke Street store at 314-336 Bourke Street. Part of this included a new facade in the prevailing interwar style of the time – Art Deco and the addition of several more floors to what was already a very large department store. On the sixth floor a chic European style ballroom with soaring ceilings, sweeping stairs and parquet flooring was planned for use by the emporium’s patrons as a dining room by day and in which Myer could host Parisian fashion shows and hold exclusive Melbourne society events by night. The Myer Mural Hall, so called because of an impressive collection of ten murals by Australian artist Napier Waller, was the realisation of Sidney Myer’s dream.
The Mural Hall, a dining hall suitable for a sitting for one thousand people and a venue for fashion parades and performances, was completed in 1933 as part of the sixth floor which was set aside for dining. It is a large rectangular space with a decorative plaster ceiling and balconies and wall panels in a Streamline Moderne style. However, it is the decoration of ten murals by renowned artist Napier Waller (1893-1972) that are the Mural Hall’s claim to fame. The murals took a little over a year to complete and were painted at Napier Waller’s home at Fairy Hills in Ivanhoe before being transported to the department store where they were hung. Completed in 1934, just after Sidney Myer’s death, eight of the murals are almost floor to ceiling, whilst the remaining two are located over the two side entrances. All pay homage to the seasons and to women and their achievements through history in the areas of art, opera, literature, dance, sport and fashion.
The eastern wall features a mural "Revelation of Fashion". It features: a statue of Venus, the Goddess of love and beauty; costumes from the late 11th Century medieval period; dress from 1520 during the Tudor period; 16th Century Renaissance fashion, the Elizabethan style of the latter half of the 16th Century; court dress from 1625 during the reign of James I; the court dress from 1633 during the reign of Charles I; court dress from 1680 during the reign of Charles II; court dress from 1702 during the reign of Queen Anne; formal dress from the court of Louis XVI in 1780; the garb of the French Revolution (1794 – 1799); the empire line of Napoleon Bonaparte’s court in 1803; fashions from the reign of George IV; Victorian era crinolines of 1840; fashions from the reign of Edward VII in 1901; and the current fashions of 1933 during the reign of George V (no doubt available on the lower floors of the Myer Emporium).
Napier Waller (1893 – 1972) was a noted Australian muralist, mosaicist and painter. He served in France from 1916, being so seriously wounded at Bullecourt that he lost his right arm. He was right-handed but learned to use his left hand while recuperating. Back in Australia, he established his reputation by exhibiting more paintings. He is perhaps best known for the mosaics and stained glass for the Hall of Memory at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra, completed in 1958. However, Melbourne has been described as "a gallery of Napier Waller’s work". Pieces of Napier Waller’s works may be found in the Melbourne Town Hall (1927), the State Library of Victoria (1928), the T & G Life Building (1929), Newspaper House (1933), Florentino’s Restaurant (1934), the Wesley Church (1935) and the University of Melbourne (1940) as well as the Myer Mural Hall.

One of The New York Times Book Review’s 10 Best Books of the Year
For more than four hundred years, the art of ballet has stood at the center of Western civilization. Its traditions serve as a record of our past. A ballerina dancing The Sleeping Beauty today is a link in a long chain of dancers stretching back to sixteenth-century Italy and France: Her graceful movements recall a lost world of courts, kings, and aristocracy, but her steps and gestures are also marked by the dramatic changes in dance and culture that followed. Ballet has been shaped by the Renaissance and Classicism, the Enlightenment and Romanticism, Bolshevism, Modernism, and the Cold War. Apollo’s Angels is a groundbreaking work—the first cultural history of ballet ever written, lavishly illustrated and beautifully told.
Ballet is unique: It has no written texts or standardized notation. It is a storytelling art passed on from teacher to student. The steps are never just the steps—they are a living, breathing document of a culture and a tradition. And while ballet’s language is shared by dancers everywhere, its artists have developed distinct national styles. French, Italian, Danish, Russian, English, and American traditions each have their own expression, often formed in response to political and societal upheavals.
From ballet’s origins in the Renaissance and the codification of its basic steps and positions under France’s Louis XIV (himself an avid dancer), the art form wound its way through the courts of Europe, from Paris and Milan to Vienna and St. Petersburg. It was in Russia that dance developed into the form most familiar to American audiences: The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, and The Nutcracker originated at the Imperial court. In the twentieth century, emigre dancers taught their art to a generation in the United States and in Western Europe, setting off a new and radical transformation of dance.
Jennifer Homans is a historian and critic who was also a professional dancer: She brings to Apollo’s Angels a knowledge of dance born of dedicated practice. She traces the evolution of technique, choreography, and performance in clean, clear prose, drawing readers into the intricacies of the art with vivid descriptions of dances and the artists who made them. Her admiration and love for the ballet shines through on every page. Apollo’s Angels is an authoritative work, written with a grace and elegance befitting its subject.
