Canadian Fresh Silver Hake

Canadian Fresh Silver Hake

Canadian Silver Hake or Whiting although
popular in Europe (Spain, Italy, France) is still a hard sell here in Canada.
It is delicious, very inexpensive and you will not find it in any Restaurant menu,
$5.00 worth of this fish will feed a family of four. Try that with McDonald's.

adobe... boro lampwork nugget, oxidized sterling silver necklace

a color saturated boro lampwork nugget (14mm x 11mm) swings on thick sterling silver from a 16" italian sterling silver box chain. all high quality sterling that has been deeply oxidized and hand polished.

a word about boro lampwork beads ~ borosilicate (aka boro) glass is a very unique and specialized variety of glass. its composition is different from the "soft" glass that is normally used for lampwork beads, resulting in a much stronger finished piece. although more expensive than a softer glass, boro offers some amazingly gorgeous color spectrums when viewed in different types of light, but the colors are most dynamic & vibrant in direct sunlight.

a georgeous sharply faceted nugget (quite large at about 10 x 16.25mm) of flashy labradorite with loads of blue & green fire swings on a sterling silver circlet from a 16" italian sterling silver box chain. this is really great quality labradorite, the flash doesn't show well at all in the photos, nearly every faceted side has a gorgeous fiery flash of color.

  • A type of necklace or bracelet constructed of very thin, fine, small silver cylinders originally strung on catgut, now strung on fine wire

  • the Santa Domingo Indians of New Mexico are recognized as the creators of heishi. Originally, they used shell and turquoise, drilled with a small hand pump drill, rubbed smooth and strung. "That Liquid Splendour"

There is a sort of undefinable, elusive magic in nature. We feel it but we can't put our fingers on it, or fully comprehend it. fluid and ever-changing.

This charm necklace beautifully displays a delicate antique metal cut-out of a bee in flowers. This is an antique silvery piece with a brassy patina that is like none other. It is "shabby" elegant and just lovely. The medallion hangs on double chains of silver and gold colors.

Approx. Length ~ 20" w/2" Drop.

Inspired by a poem called "Hymn to the Spirit of Nature," by P.B. Shelley

"Life of Life! thy lips enkindle
With their love the breath between them;
And thy smiles before they dwindle
Make the cold air fire: then screen them
In those locks, where whoso gazes

Faints, entangled in their mazes.

Child of Light! thy limbs are burning
Through the veil which seems to hide them,
As the radiant lines of morning
Through thin clouds, ere they divide them;
And this atmosphere divinest
Shrouds thee wheresoe'er thou shinest.

Fair are others: none beholds thee;
But thy voice sounds low and tender
Like the fairest, for it folds thee
From the sight, that liquid splendour;
And all feel, yet see thee never,
As I feel now, lost for ever!

Lamp of Earth! where'er thou movest
Its dim shapes are clad with brightness,
And the souls of whom thou lovest
Walk upon the winds with lightness
Till they fail, as I am failing,
Dizzy, lost, yet unbewailing!"

I don't really know what to call this... It's a silver set that my Mom has. It's a tray, a small lidded platter, a bowl (for sugar, I'm assuming), a small pitcher (for cream, I think) and a large pitcher (for tea or coffee ?)

I took a photo of it in the negative because I just really liked how what normally seems so shiny and bright, when seen through the negative form, looks a little gross actually. =) The shiny spots now appear as black spots... which, to me, kind of remind me of some kind of rot or decay or something. Anyway, I just thought it was kind of interesting, so I'm sharing it. =)

Elsa Martinelli

Elsa Martinelli

German postcard by Kruger, nr. 902/255.

Glamorous Elsa Martinelli (1932) is an Italian actress and former fashion model. She showed her beautiful curves in many European and Hollywood productions of the 1950’s and 1960’s, but somehow never became the star she was destined to become in the mid-1950’s.

Elsa Martinelli was born Elsa Tia , in Grosseto, Tuscany, in 1932, according to All Movie Guide, or 1935, according to IMDb. With her family she moved to Rome. In 1953 , while working as a barmaid, she was discovered by designer Roberto Capucci who introduced her to the world of fashion. She became a model and began playing small roles in films. She appeared in Le Rouge et le noir/Scarlet and Black (1954, Claude Autant-Lara), but her first important film role came the following year with the American western The Indian Fighter (1955, Andre De Toth), in which she played the Native American heroine opposite Kirk Douglas. Douglas claims to have spotted her on a magazine cover and hired her for his production company, Bryna Productions. In 1956 she won the Silver Berlin Bear Award for Best Actress at the Berlin International Film Festival for playing the title role in the comedy Donatella (1956, Mario Monicelli). Since then, she divided her time between Europe and the USA and has appeared in such films as Four Girls in Town (1956, Jack Sher) with George Nader, Manuela/The Stowaway Girl (1957, Guy Hamilton) with Trevor Howard, the historical drama I Battellieri del Volga/Prisoner of the Volga (1959, Victor Tourjansky) with John Derek, the excellent drama La notte brava/The Big Night (1959, Mauro Bolognini) scripted by Pier Paolo Pasolini, the romance Un amore a Roma/Love in Rome (1960, Dino Risi) and the haunting and surreal horrorfilm Et mourir de plaisir/Blood and Roses (1960, Roger Vadim), an attempt to retell the classic Sheridan Le Fanu vampire tale Carmilla, starring Annette Vadim (or Annette Stroyberg).

One of Elsa Martinelli’s most interesting films is Orson Welles’ adaptation of Kafka's The Trial, Le Proces (1962, Orson Welles). Anthony Perkins played Joseph K, a man condemned for an unnamed crime in an unnamed country. Seeking justice, he is sucked into a labyrinth of bureaucracy. Along the way, he becomes involved with three women -- Jeanne Moreau, Romy Schneider and Martinelli - who in their own individual ways are functions of the System that persecutes him. In the action and adventure comedy Hatari! (1962, Howard Hawks) Martinelli was the eye candy in a cast with John Wayne, Gerard Blain, Red Buttons and Hardy Kruger. Wayne's men-only contingent is reduced to jello when Elsa enters the scene, but in tried and true Howard Hawks fashion, she quickly becomes ‘one of the guys’. In the comedy The Pigeon That Took Rome (1962, Melville Shavelson) she starred opposite Charlton Heston, and in The V.I.P.’s (1963, Anthony Asquith) she was the protegee of Orson Welles; in the South Seas adventure Rampage (1963, Phil Karlson) she co-starred with Robert Mitchum, in the stylish science fiction film La Decima Vittima/The 10th Victim (1965, Elio Petri) with Ursula Andress and Marcello Mastroianni, and in the episodic sex comedy Sette Volte Donna/Woman Times Seven (1967, Vittorio De Sica) with Lex Barker. In the big-budget adaptation of Terry Southern's satiric sex farce Candy (1968, Christian Marquand), she played Candy’s mother in a cast with Charles Aznavour, Marlon Brando, Richard Burton, James Coburn, Walter Matthau and Ringo Starr. In Italy she made the near-surrealistic western Il mio corpo per un poker/Belle Starr (1968, Piero Cristofani, Lina Wertmuller), and a stylish erotic thriller, Una sull'altra/ One on Top of the Other (1969, Lucio Fulci), with Marisa Mell and Jean Sorel.

In the 1970’s the film career of Elsa Martinelli halted. She only appeared incidentally in European films. She starred opposite Charles Aznavour in the French caper film, La Part des Lions/ The Lions' Share (1971, Jean Larriaga) and played a supporting part in the political drama Garofano Rosso/The Red Carnation (1976, Luigi Faccini). On tv she appeared as a guest star in The Return of the Saint (1979) with Ian Ogilvy as Simon Templar. After Sono Un Fenomeno Paranormale/I'm a Paranormal Phenomenon (1985, Sergio Corbucci) with Alberto Sordi she made an unheralded international return appearances in Arrivederci Roma (1990, Clive Donner) and the inconsequential all-star comedy Once Upon a Crime (1992, Eugene Levy). Meanwhile she had started a new, successful career as an interior designer. Most recently she was seen in the short film Cabiria, Priscilla e le altre/Cabiria, Priscilla and the Others (1999, Fabrizio Celestini) and the tv-series Orgoglio (2005). Elsa Martinelli was married from 1957 till 1964 to Count Franco Mancinelli Scotti di San Vito, by whom she has a daughter, actress Cristiana Mancinelli (1958). In 1968 she married Paris Match photographer and 1970’s furniture designer Willy Rizzo, with whom she has

Victorian Heritage Register Statement of Significance

The State's richest deep alluvial gold lead system, known as the Berry Lead System, run north from Creswick, slightly to the west of Smeaton. Mining of lead system took place from early 1870s. The Berry No. 1 mine was floated in 1881 and by the end of 1884, the company's main shaft had been sunk 494 feet. Confronted with large flows of water, the company erected some of the most extensive pumping machinery in the State, including a 70-inch cylinder Cornish engine. The engine was locally manufactured at John Hichman's Union Foundry Ballarat and was capable of lifting 60,000 gallons of water per hour. The engine was housed in a brick engine house. The Berry No.1 mine was not one of the field's major gold producers. In fact it was spectacularly unprofitable: in twenty years its record was 50,000 ounces of gold, dividends of less than ?5,000, and operating costs of ?278,764.

The Berry No.1 Deep Lead Gold Mine is of historical, archaeological and scientific importance to the State of Victoria.

The Berry No.1 Deep Lead Gold Mine is historically and scientifically important as a characteristic example of an important form of gold mining. Gold mining sites are of crucial importance for the pivotal role they have played since 1851 in the development of Victoria. As well as being a significant producer of Victoria's nineteenth century wealth, deep lead mining, with its intensive use of machinery, played an important role in the development of Victorian manufacturing industry. The engine house at the Berry No.1 mine is a crucial reminder of the move by the mining industry from the use of imported Cornish pumping engines to locally produced engines.

Victorian Heritage Register Statement of Significance
The Berry No.1 Deep Lead Gold Mine is scientifically important for its illustration of Cornish pumping technology and building design. The site is archaeologically important for its potential to yield artefacts and evidence which will be able to provide significant information about the technological history of gold mining.

Hidden Valley agreement signals return of mining

Hidden Valley agreement signals return of mining

The National

By Yehiura Hriehwazi

The signing of the Hidden Valley gold project memorandum of agreement (MOA) paves the way for Harmony Gold of South Africa to start mine construction at the cost of A$220 million (about K500 million).

Thousands of villagers trekked into Wau to participate in traditional dances and witness the occasion.

The mine would generate K70 million annually in export earnings when it comes on stream in early 2007.

At the ceremony was National Planning Minister Arthur Somare, who presented K100,000 to landowners as part payment of a K500,000 that will act as "seed money" for spin-off business activities.

Mining Minister Sam Akoitai said this was the first PNG mining project where the MOA, mining lease, mining easement agreement, compensation agreement and supplementary arrangements were all signed on the same day - a demonstration of excellent efforts by his staff, the negotiating parties, the provincial administration, the company and landowners.

Mr Briggs told The National the mine would produce 300,000 ounces of gold and 4.5 million ounces of silver annually and employ up to 600 people.

He said Harmony would build a K45km road from Bulolo through the PNG Forest Products pine plantations and through the small-scale Eddie Creek mine to Hidden Valley.

"This will take about three months. When the road is complete, we will bring in machinery using the road and start mine construction. It will take 18 months to complete the mine."

Information made available to The National showed that up to K6m a year will be paid in royalties to landowners and the provincial government with the project's wages bill totalling K12m a year.

Eggster Bunny by Holly's Folly

Eggster Bunny by Holly's Folly

This unique lampworked Easter "Eggster" Bunny consists of two of my handmade lampworked beads. The base of the bunny was made in a large egg shape before adding her yellow floral garland necklace, arms and legs with pads in the palest of pinks. This bead is so perfectly balanced, she sits up on her own!

The head was made from a smaller egg shape with a large heart shape base to carry those pale pink ears. The yellow garland matches her necklace.

The two beads were wire wrapped together with sterling silver 18 gauge wire - The double bail is split to carry on the bunny ear / heart theme. The base of the wire is a spiral wrap to allow the piece to stand up on it's own.

While this piece is suitable to wear, it's perfect balance allows it to function as an ornament or desktop friend.

Jacob was known as "Fred." He is the first born son of Jacob and Catherina & the 3rd child. This picture was also taken in Niles, MI by E.B. Ives. The guessed date is 1884. (It has to be before summer of 1884.) The picture is untouched and one can see the outline of the frame it was in. This series of Niles, MI photos came from the long lost cousin who had "no damn idea" who these people were. Was I ever lucky! He told me he had thrown them out when they moved 6 months earlier, but... they had not thrown them out and they most graciously sent them to me.
