Done for my beautiful wife. <3 I actually really enjoyed doing this one, and it wasn't too hard, and didn't take too long.

In other news, we're thinking about collaborating and opening a store with shapes/skins/poses, and eventually other stuff once I get the whole sculpting thing down. Sound like a good idea? Lemme know! c:

What Really Happened to the 1960s: How Mass Media Culture Failed American Democracy

Wherever we turn these days, we encounter reminders of the sixties. They're invoked in presidential campaigns, American military actions, and outbursts of mass protest. We're bombarded with media-saturated anniversaries of iconic events, from JFK's inauguration (and assassination) to urban riots and Woodstock. But as Edward Morgan suggests, these references offer little more than an endless stream of distracting imagery that has more to do with today's politics and economics than with the reality of yesterday's social movements.
In his provocative look at mass media's connection with those turbulent years, Morgan simultaneously seeks to explain what happened in the 1960s and what happened to how we remember it. His comprehensive overview and critical analysis reveal how the mass media have shaped the popular image of a raucous decade in ways that have curtailed its promise of democracy.
Morgan's in-depth study of sixties social movements and their depictions in corporate America's print media, film, and television helps to explain why the past still provokes deep emotions--even antagonism--half a century later. He blends history, sociology, political science, media and cultural studies, and critical theory to explain why the 1960s have been so virulently targeted, particularly by critics on the right who blame today's self-indulgent culture on baby boomers and "sixties permissiveness" instead of the real culprits: consumer-driven capitalism and neoliberal politics.
Emphasizing the tensions between capitalism and democracy, Morgan investigates the fate of democracy in our media-driven culture, first by examining the ways that the 1960s were represented in the media at the time, then by exploring how popular versions of the sixties have glossed over their more radically democratic qualities in favor of sensationalism and ideological constructions. He reminds us of what really happened--then shows us how the media trivialized and satirized those events, co-opting and commercializing the decade's legacy and, in doing so, robbing it of its more radical, democratic potential.
By revisiting this chapter of the past, Morgan shows that it has much to tell us about where we are today and how we got here. Whether you lived through the sixties or only read about them--or only saw Hollywood's version of them in Forrest Gump--this book will put their lessons in clearer perspective.

Everybody Loves Our Town: An Oral History of Grunge

Twenty years after the release of Nirvana’s landmark album Nevermind comes Everybody Loves Our Town: An Oral History of Grunge, the definitive word on the grunge era, straight from the mouths of those at the center of it all.

In 1986, fledgling Seattle label C/Z Records released Deep Six, a compilation featuring a half-dozen local bands: Soundgarden, Green River, Melvins, Malfunkshun, the U-Men and Skin Yard. Though it sold miserably, the record made music history by documenting a burgeoning regional sound, the raw fusion of heavy metal and punk rock that we now know as grunge. But it wasn’t until five years later, with the seemingly overnight success of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” that grunge became a household word and Seattle ground zero for the nineties alternative-rock explosion.

Everybody Loves Our Town captures the grunge era in the words of the musicians, producers, managers, record executives, video directors, photographers, journalists, publicists, club owners, roadies, scenesters and hangers-on who lived through it. The book tells the whole story: from the founding of the Deep Six bands to the worldwide success of grunge’s big four (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains); from the rise of Seattle’s cash-poor, hype-rich indie label Sub Pop to the major-label feeding frenzy that overtook the Pacific Northwest; from the simple joys of making noise at basement parties and tiny rock clubs to the tragic, lonely deaths of superstars Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley.

Drawn from more than 250 new interviews—with members of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Screaming Trees, Hole, Melvins, Mudhoney, Green River, Mother Love Bone, Temple of the Dog, Mad Season, L7, Babes in Toyland, 7 Year Bitch, TAD, the U-Men, Candlebox and many more—and featuring previously untold stories and never-before-published photographs, Everybody Loves Our Town is at once a moving, funny, lurid, and hugely insightful portrait of an extraordinary musical era.

An Interview with Author Mark Yarm
Q.) Why do you think grunge took off in Seattle as opposed to somewhere else at that time?
A lot of it had to do with geographical isolation. Many people don’t seem to realize that in the ’80s--before the Starbucks/Microsoft/Amazon boom era--Seattle wasn’t the cosmopolitan place it is today. People in the rest of the country pretty much considered it the hinterlands; a couple interviewees told me that back in the day, people who weren’t familiar with Seattle would ask them, in all sincerity, “Seattle? Aren’t there cowboys and Indians out there?” Often times, touring bands would simply skip Seattle because it was too far out of their way. So, in effect, musicians in that region had to make their own fun. And in the process, they honed their own sound.
Q.) What are the biggest misconceptions people have about grunge?
Probably the biggest one is that all these musicians were overly earnest gloom mongers sticking needles in their arms. Of course, a few were overly earnest and some were sticking needles in their arms, but for the most part--and I think this comes across in the book--these musicians were just super-funny and huge jokesters.
Q.) Where does the book’s title come from?
Speaking of humor in grunge… “Everybody loves our town” is a lyric from “Overblown,” an extremely arch song Mudhoney wrote for the Cameron Crowe movie Singles. It pretty much deflates the hype surrounding the scene at the time and takes a semi-veiled jab at at least one grunge superstar.
Q.) What’s your favorite grunge song?
It almost seems too obvious an answer, but Mudhoney’s “Touch Me I’m Sick” is pretty much perfect--and perfectly encapsulates the scuzzy “grunge” guitar sound and scabrous humor of the scene. Nirvana’s “Negative Creep” comes to mind too.
Q.) Is there a grunge band that should have made it big that did not?
Had their super-charismatic lead singer Andrew Wood not died of a drug overdose in 1990, Mother Love Bone--the band from which Pearl Jam sprung--would likely have made it big. Also, TAD--a band fronted by Tad Doyle, who was marketed as a 300-pound ex-butcher from Boise--appeared primed for success in the early ’90s. But TAD was beset by bad luck at nearly every turn. Their downward spiral began when their album 8-Way Santa had to be yanked from shelves because the band used this hilarious, very saucy photo of a couple on the cover without their permission. (Google it.) Legend has it that the woman in the picture had since found God, and the couple took legal action.
Everybody Loves Our Town: An Oral History of Grunge author Mark Yarm put together this list of 15 grunge tracks (ranging from the obscure to the chart-topping) discussed in the book.
1. Mudhoney “Touch Me I’m Sick”
2. U-Men “They”
3. Green River “Ain’t Nothing to Do”
4. Soundgarden “Nothing to Say”
5. Nirvana “Love Buzz”
6. TAD “Jack”
7. 7 Year Bitch “Lorna”
8. Mother Love Bone “Crown of Thorns”
9. Temple of the Dog “Hunger Strike”
10. Pearl Jam “Even Flow”
11. Alice in Chains “Fear the Voices”
12. Screaming Trees “Nearly Lost You”
13. Melvins “Sky Pup”
14. Candlebox “You”
15. Mudhoney “Overblown”

Glass sculptor - Rochester, MN. United States - Photography by Roque Storion (roquesd blog) 3

I came across this sculpture in the Mayo Clinic. The first impression was amazement; Four chandeliers irregular aligned regularly in a large hall or better in one of the great entrance halls of Mayo. Already, for me, there was a contradiction in this concept of alignment, which is both in altitude as the distances of each other. After all, I thought, such as chandeliers with peculiar forms are arranged so standard.

After seeing so many times over, I noticed that I had cheated on the chandeliers, they were just strange objects, because there are dozens of mini spotlights trained on the four big “things.” Why are there so many lights pointed to those chandelier? At least different and made me think.

It took a few more days, since our first meeting (I and “chandeliers”), to realize how much I was wrong about the “things” that now I see them as sculptures. The whole environment was surrounded by works of certain artists. Some were donated by the authors, and all who were present had a real meaning and reason for being in a certain place.

Even the sculptures that seem somewhat spontaneous, creative in its shape, are arranged for such representation. Chandeliers have become one of things …and, finally, sculptures in glass. Then I found myself spending time photographing, looking angle, light and intent of these “things”. Here are the chandeliers, things sculptures. We see what we believe and there is a great example. And you, what do you see?

Have conscience!

Roque Storion.

Please tell us why you can "Make it Work": I don't believe in rules when it comes to fashion, a stylist should make their own rules. It's cliche to say I think outside of the box, but in a way its true. Or maybe, I take the box, flip it, twist it, rearrange it until it's become something amazing. A box full of crazy items, given free reign to create something amazing?? what could possibly be more fun!

Tells us a bit more about your SL Style and how you worked it into your Photograph: I love to experiment with the wild and crazy, but sometimes its nice to express my simple, chic side. Couture and crazy has its place, but I love to maintain a level of style and class in all that I do. I went for a more sophisticated feel with this look, aiming to be youthful yet stylish.

For this release, the Fireworks team searched for opportunities to improve the software's performance and stability so you that can work smoothly and quickly, whatever the task at hand. Compared to Fireworks CS4, Fireworks CS5:
Installs up to 17-40 percent faster
Takes up 7-10 percent less space on your hard disk
Launches 12-15 percent faster after you start your computer ("cold launch")
Launches 11-49 percent faster after you've launched Fireworks and then quit ("warm launch")
Reduces response time in user interface components such as panels and context-sensitive controls, so you can work without interruption
Adobe Device Central integration
Easily experiment with designing for mobile devices. Integration between Fireworks and Adobe Device Central makes it easy to set up a Fireworks project and preview it in Adobe Device Central. In Fireworks, choose File > Device Central, select a target device, and click Create. Fireworks creates a new project with the correct pixel dimensions of the device's display. Use Fireworks to craft your mobile content, and then choose File > Preview In Device Central to emulate your content using the updated online library of device profiles.
FXG Export
Fireworks is optimized for designing screen graphics, making it ideal for creating assets for delivery via the Flash Platform. Fireworks CS5 supports the latest FXG format (2.0) so you can easily export individual objects or multipage designs as editable FXG elements for use in Flash Catalyst and other software.
Adobe Swatch Exchange
Fireworks can now open and create Adobe Swatch Exchange (ASE) files, which can also be used in Adobe InDesign®, Photoshop, and Illustrator software. ASE files created with other Creative Suite applications can be easily imported into the Swatches panel in Fireworks, allowing you to work with color schemes that may have been created in other projects. Additionally, you can create ASE files from Adobe Kuler themes and use them in your design.
Sharing ASE files allows you to maintain color consistency among design teams, including those using Adobe Kuler, and across design projects.
Fireworks templates
Save time by jump-starting your project with a variety of templates, including web and mobile designs, wireframes, grids, and document presets.
Type enhancements
In Fireworks CS4, integration of the Adobe text engine introduced exciting new capabilities for high-quality typographic design and efficient text handling. In Fireworks CS5, we've continued to harness the power of the text engine to provide enhanced features for editing and formatting text. Together, these refinements make it much easier for you to efficiently achieve the typographic quality and effects you want. Now you can:
Select text with similar attributes, such as bold and italic, inside a text block
Select non-contiguous text elements within a single text block
Undo/Redo text-editing changes
Take advantage of greater fidelity when copying and pasting text, including double-byte text, from Illustrator into Fireworks
Search for a font by typing the first few characters of the name in the font list box (Windows only)
Use keyboard shortcuts to adjust kerning and tracking characters up to 200 points in 10-point and 100-point increments, and enjoy accurate mapping of kerning and tracking values when opening Fireworks CS3 files
See a text overflow indicator showing when text doesn't fit on or in a path
Triple-click a text block to select an entire paragraph
Use line and paragraph breaks and specify the space after a paragraph
Paste text copied from Microsoft Office applications as text rather than a bitmap
Copy and paste more text into a text block at once
Emulating CSS text styling is significantly easier in Fireworks CS5. Thanks to improved selection features, you can quickly style your text to resemble the styling of a specific CSS rule (color, line height, character spacing, weight, style, or size).
Pixel-perfect precision
Fireworks CS5 includes numerous features to enable you to precisely control the placement and appearance of design elements. In addition to stroke alignment, type-handling enhancements, proportional scaling, and FXG export, Fireworks CS5 allows you to create crisp graphics that align to the underlying pixel grid.
The Compound Shape tools
Creating complex vector shapes is much faster and more flexible in Fireworks CS5, thanks to the Compound Shape tools in the Properties panel. The Compound Shape tools allow you to group vector shapes temporarily as you draw them, so you can both move the objects as a group and edit individual objects one at a time. You can also achieve nondestructive effects such as punching, intersecting, or cropping overlapping vectors. With the Compound Shape tool, you can use simple shapes to build complex vectors faster and more flexibly.
Extensibility enhancements
Fireworks offers a high degree of built-in extensibility. Fine-tune workflows to your personal preferences or the needs of specific projects using simple JavaScript commands for batch processing. Use the History panel to capture a custom workflow sequence, add it to the Commands menu, and apply it to multiple images.
To take advantage of the extensibility in Fireworks, third-party developers release numerous extensions. From Flash panels to Auto Shapes (artwork with JavaScript logic attached) to workflow commands, extensions can streamline your workflow in numerous ways. Many of these extensions are free and available at the Adobe Exchange and Marketplace (www.adobe.com/cfusion/exchange).

Takashi Murakami is well-known in the worldwide art scene for making thought-provoking paintings and sculptures, running the influential artist-led art enterprise Kaikai Kiki artist management group, curating the visionary Superflat show, and collaborating on high-end, high-profile projects with Louis Vuitton. He also coordinates the GEISAI art shows, which serve as an entry point for aspiring artists in Japan. The artists in this group show have won awards at GEISAI shows, and were hand picked to have their work presented in Los Angeles by Murakami and Eric Nakamura, publisher of Giant Robot magazine and owner of the Giant Robot stores and galleries.

Yasushi Ebihara projects his love for Macauley Culkin via large-scale paintings and sculpture, also commenting on the trappings of stardom and the entertainment business.

The subjects of Jaga Ichiro's figure paintings are cute but resemble bodily fluids. The fluidity of their forms is elegant, organic, and somewhat disturbing.

Hisashi Kondo's hyper realistic, larger-than-life portraits hang on screens like ghosts and can be seen from both sides.

Sashie Masakatsu articulates detailed sculptures and paintings of surreal, spherical architectural forms suspended over flat landscapes.

Rie Kawashima studied fashion in college, and creates dreamy images of girlhood with precise yet natural lines and occasional elegant, pastel shades.

Rieko Sakurai's super stylized depictions of girls are as full of energy as they are of color. Her works convey the pop art power of the '60s subverted with a touch of darkness.

Miki Taira weaves textiles into humanoid forms of all sizes, imparting them with primitive-looking calligraphy.

Erika Yamashiro's paintings feature restful women with fuzzy animals, mushrooms, sweets, and other feminine icons in dreamy settings.

A reception featuring many of the artists will take place from 6:30 - 10:00 on Saturday, September 15. For more information about the opening, the artists, GR2, or Giant Robot magazine, please contact:

Fitted caps look great and get even better the more you wear them, but if you dont want to spend six months breaking in a fitted hat or cant see yourself with a tape measure around your head trying to figure out how many inches equals what hat size, try this Adult White Stretch 1-Fit Hat / Cap. Its the perfect compromise between a fitted look and not having to fool with all the measuring business.
This cap is made of white wool and features an embroidered 3-D logo on the front. A secondary logo is flat-stitched on the back of the hat, and the contrast-colored eyelets and button provide a little something extra to the already impressive appearance. The hats best feature, though, is the spandex sweatband on the rear inner section that stretches to adjust to fit almost almost any fans head. From the back the cap looks fitted, but only you will know that you have a stretchable spandex band holding the hat snugly and comfortably on your head.

The Rules of Etiquette - Short Rules and Reflections for Conduct in Society

The great error into which nearly all foreigners and most Americans fall, who write or speak of society in this country, arises from confounding the political with the social system. In most other countries, in England, France, and all those nations whose government is monarchical or aristocratic, these systems are indeed similar. Society is there intimately connected with the government, and the distinctions in one are the origin of gradations in the other. The chief part of the society of the kingdom is assembled in the capital, and the same persons who legislate for the country legislate also for it. But in America the two systems are totally unconnected, and altogether different in character. In remodelling the form of the administration, society remained unrepublican. There is perfect freedom of political privilege, all are the same upon the hustings, or at a political meeting; but this equality does not extend to the drawing-room or the parlour. None are excluded from the highest councils of the nation, but it does not follow that all can enter into the highest ranks, of society. In point of fact, we think that there is more exclusiveness in the society of this country, than there is in that even of England—far more than there is in France. And the explanation may perhaps be found in the fact which we hate mentioned above. There being there less danger of permanent disarrangement or confusion of ranks by the occasional admission of the lowborn aspirant, there does not exist the same necessity for a jealous guarding of the barriers as there does here. The distinction of classes, also, after the first or second, is actually more clearly defined, and more rigidly observed in America, than in any country of Europe. Persons unaccustomed to look searchingly at these matters, may be surprised to hear it; but we know from observation, that there are among the respectable, in any city of the United States, at least ten distinct ranks. We cannot, of course, here point them out, because we could not do it without mentioning names.

THE "NEW" SCHEME...SAME AS THE OTHER SCHEMES....UNWORKABLE

THE

By Zachary A. Goldfarb, Published: May 15
The Obama administration will begin to tap federal retiree programs to help fund operations after the government loses its ability Monday to borrow more money from the public, adding urgency to efforts in Washington to fashion a compromise over the debt.

Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner has warned for months that the government would soon hit the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling — a legal limit on how much it can borrow. With the government poised to reach that limit Monday, Geithner is undertaking special measures in an effort to postpone the day when he will no longer have enough funds to pay all of the government’s bills.
Geithner, who has already suspended a program that helps state and local government manage their finances, will begin to borrow from retirement funds for federal workers. The measure won’t have an impact on retirees because the Treasury is legally required to reimburse the program.

The maneuver buys Geithner only a few months of time. If Congress does not vote by Aug. 2 to raise the debt limit, Geithner says the government is likely to default on some of its obligations, which he says would cause enormous economic harm and the suspension of government services, including the disbursal of Social Security funds.

Many congressional Republicans, however, have been skeptical that breaching the Aug. 2 deadline would be as catastrophic as Geithner suggests. What’s more, Republican leaders are insisting that Congress cut spending by as much as the Obama administration wants to raise the debt limit, without any new taxes. Obama is proposing spending cuts and tax increases to rein in the debt.

“Everything should be on the table, except raising taxes,” House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” “Because raising taxes will hurt our economy and hurt our ability to create jobs in our country.”

The Obama administration has warned that it is dangerous to make a vote on raising the debt limit contingent on other proposals. But Boehner is demanding that Congress use the debt vote as a way to bring down government spending.

“I’m ready to cut the deal today,” Boehner said. “We don’t have to wait until the 11th hour. But I am not going to walk away from this moment. We have a moment, a window of opportunity to act, because if we don’t act, the markets are going to act for us.”

Geithner’s plan to tap federal retiree programs as a temporary means to avoid a government default comes as the Obama administration has shown growing interest in altering those programs to curb the debt in the long run.

Administration officials have expressed interest in raising the amount that federal employees contribute to their pensions, sources told The Washington Post.

The Republicans have suggested that the civilian workforce contribute more to its retirement in the future, effectively trimming 5 percent from salaries. The administration has not been willing to go that far in talks being led by Vice President Biden.

Treasury secretaries have tapped special programs to avoid default six times since 1985. The most protracted delay in raising the debt limit came in 1995 after congressional Republicans swept to power during the Clinton administration.

But today, the government needs far more money to cover its obligations than in the past, making the special measures less effective than they used to be. The government needs about $125 billion more a month than it takes in each month.

In a letter released last week to Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), Geithner wrote that a default would risk a “double-dip” recession.

“Default would not only increase borrowing costs for the federal government, but also for families, businesses and local governments — reducing investment and job creation throughout the economy,” Geithner wrote.

But several prominent congressional Republicans have dismissed the Obama administration’s assertion that the country would face dire consequences if Congress does not vote to raise the federal limit on government borrowing by August. Many of the skeptics are affiliated with the tea party.

In the Senate, freshman Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) has said the Obama administration has been exaggerating the effects of hitting the default mark. He says breaching the limit would cause only a partial government shutdown.

Other freshman Republicans have said that Geithner could raise money to avoid defaulting by selling investments in private companies. The Republican Study Committee, which represents more than 150 lawmakers, sent a letter to Geithner last week pressing for more details about the Aug. 2 deadline.

Sunday, May 3, 2009

Here's a view of the downtown cityscape from the top of the Cleveland Clinic's parking structure.

The staff at the clinic fired questions at me at machine gun speed during my two days of testing. I was asked about my emotional and psychological health, about my life story, about whether I am donating my kidney for financial gain or sheerly out of obligation. Nurses queried me regarding my daily habits, how much I smoke and drink, if I've ever had any problems with my kidneys or bladder. A social worker asked me how I relieve stress, if I want to have children someday and how my family feels about my decision to donate. I filled out questionnaires and answered a redundant series of questions, several times over, regarding my physical health and history.

On my way back to Tom and Kathy's home after this second round of tests and appointments, I was struck by the fact that none of the staff at the clinic had asked me, point blank: "Why are you doing this?"

While lunching on tortellini soup and chocolate mouse with fresh strawberries at my aunt and uncle's, I mentioned the glaring omission of this particular question. Kathy didn't miss a beat, turning to me to ask, in her straight shooting fashion, "So, why are you doing this?"

Which is a really difficult question to answer, when it comes right down to it. There are myriad reasons, which intertwine and weave together to create the pattern "yes." I'm doing this because I just feel like it is the right thing to do. I'm doing it because the timing is great as far as my job and stage of life are concerned. I'm doing it because I think it is perhaps the most beautiful and noble thing I will ever do. I'm doing it because I feel certain that God is leading me to donate, and because I don't feel any hesitations. I'm doing it because I am young and in perfect health and only need one kidney. I'm doing it because I met Andy and Heather last November (for the first time, really) and saw how much they dote on each other, and spent a day playing games with their precious 10-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son. I'm doing it because, frankly, Andy desperately needs a kidney and it feels like such a privilege to participate in the restoration of his physical health. I'm doing it because, though I am not typically a crier, I tear up at times just thinking about it. I'm doing it because, on the ride back to PA after my first round of tests, after I had told the nephrologist that I was game, I heard God say, "Deborah, I am so proud of you."

*****

All that said, I'd like to add that kidney donation is really not that big of a deal. This is not to minimize the sacrifice that organ donors make. But really, kidney donation is generally done laparascopically these days. I will have 3 or 4 minor incisions in my abdomen, none of which will hit muscle tissue. It's considered a "minimally invasive" procedure.

Something I'm discovering along this route is that, if you want to receive a lot of praise, donate an organ. Everyone you tell will think that you are a saint. Recently, an acquaintance told me, "God gave you two kidneys on purpose. You're giving one up. That's a big deal."

But what if God gave us an extra, so that we could share? Because you know what? It's not Andy's fault that he was born with one kidney, or that the one that's remaining is failing. And it's no credit to me, really, that I have two fully functioning kidneys. Giving up a kidney to someone who needs one is not an act of great charity. Andy needs one. I have a spare on hand. Sure, there is always a risk when you submit yourself to the surgeon's scalpel, and there could be complications, and there is the chance that I'll need another kidney someday down the road. But really, the main inconvenience to me is about a month of my life that I'll have to chock up to recovery. A month that I'll be able to spend on my aunt and uncle's deck, lying in the sun and catching up on my reading and Flickring.

So, why not?
