From Wikipedia: Alcatraz Island is an island located in the San Francisco Bay, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) offshore from San Francisco, California, United States. Often referred to as "The Rock", the small island served as a lighthouse, a military fortification, a military prison, and a Federal Bureau of Prisons federal prison until 1963. Later, in 1972, Alcatraz became a national recreation area and received landmarking designations in 1976 and 1986. Today, the island is a historic site operated by the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is open to tours. Visitors can reach the island by ferry ride from Pier 33, near Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. It is home to the now-abandoned prison, the site of the oldest operating lighthouse on the west coast of the United States, early military fortifications, and natural features such as rock pools, a seabird colony (mostly Western Gulls, cormorants, and egrets), and unique views of the coastline. During its 29 years of operation, the penitentiary claimed no prisoners had ever successfully escaped. Thirty six prisoners were involved in 14 attempts, two men trying twice; 23 were caught, six were shot and killed during their escape, and three were lost at sea and never found. The most violent occurred on May 2, 1946 when a failed escape attempt by six prisoners led to the Battle of Alcatraz. On June 11, 1962, Frank Morris, John Anglin and Clarence Anglin carried out one of the most intricate escapes ever devised. Behind the prisoners' cells in Cell Block B (where the escapees were interned) was an unguarded 3-foot (0.91 m) wide utility corridor. The prisoners chiseled away the moisture-damaged concrete from around an air vent leading to this corridor, using tools such as a metal spoon soldered with silver from a dime and an electric drill improvised from a stolen vacuum cleaner motor. The noise was disguised by accordions played during music hour, and their progress was concealed by false walls which, in the dark recesses of the cells, fooled the guards. The escape route then led up through a fan vent; the fan and motor had been removed and replaced with a steel grille, leaving a shaft large enough for a prisoner to climb through. Stealing a carborundum abrasive cord from the prison workshop, the prisoners had removed the rivets from the grille and substituted dummy rivets made of soap. The escapees also constructed an inflatable raft from several stolen raincoats for the trip to the mainland. Leaving papier-mache dummies in their cells affixed with stolen human hair from the barbershop, they escaped. The prisoners are estimated to have entered San Francisco Bay at 10 p.m. The official investigation by the FBI was aided by another prisoner, Allen West, who also was part of the escapees' group but was left behind (West's false wall kept slipping so he held it into place with cement, which set; when the Anglin brothers (John and Clarence) accelerated the schedule, West desperately chipped away at the wall, but by the time he did his companions were gone). Articles belonging to the prisoners (including plywood paddles and parts of the raincoat raft) were discovered on nearby Angel Island, and the official report on the escape says the prisoners drowned while trying to reach the mainland in the cold waters of the bay. The MythBusters investigated the myth, concluding such an escape was plausible. The attempt was the subject of the 1979 film Escape from Alcatraz with screenplay by Richard Tuggle; directed by Don Siegel and starring Clint Eastwood as Frank Morris, Jack Thibeau as Clarence Anglin, and Fred Ward as John Anglin. Australian Silver-oak tree (Grevillea robusta) Grevillea robusta, commonly known as the southern silky oak or Silky-oak, or Australian Silver-oak, is the largest species in the genus Grevillea. It is a native of eastern coastal Australia, in riverine, subtropical and dry rainforest environments receiving more than 1,000 mm per year of average rainfall. It is a fast growing evergreen tree, between 18–35 m tall with dark green delicately dented bipinnatifid leaves reminiscent of a fern frond. It is the largest plant in the Grevillea genus, reaching diameters in excess of one metre. These leaves are generally 15–30 cm long with greyish white or rusty undersides. Its flowers are golden-orange bottlebrush-like blooms, between 8–15 cm long, in the spring, on a 2–3 cm long stem and are used for honey production. The seeds mature in late winter to early spring, fruiting on dark brown leathery dehiscent follicles, about 2 cm long, with one or two flat, winged seeds. Ingredients: - 1 pc chicken breast - 1 stalk celery, thinly sliced. - 1 cup corn - Handful of lettuce. - Silvered almonds, lightly toasted. - 2 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil - 1.5 teaspoon thyme - 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar - Salt and pepper. - Salad dressing, according to own preference. Method: - Whisk olive oil, thyme, red wine vinegar, salt and pepper in small bowl. Marinate chicken breast in mixture. Stand for 15 mins. - Cook corn in microwave. - Heat frypan with medium-high heat. Cook chicken breast, about 5 mins each side. Remove from heat, slices into bite-size chunks. - Mix all remaining ingredients. Garnish with toasted almond, pepper and salt. Dress with salad dressing. We grew: green bell pepper (cut into thin strips), Black Beauty zucchini (quartered longwise and sliced), fresh basil (cut into wide ribbons), and Lemon Boy yellow tomato (cut into bite-sized cubes). We purchased: romaine lettuce (torn into pieces), white button mushrooms (sliced), large white sweet onion (sliced into thin, short strips), calamata olive (pitted and sliced), tomato and basil feta cheese (crumbled), topped with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and a splash of sweet balsamic vinegar. YUM! I'd love it if we could grow or make ALL of the ingredients! M's Ring Made while I was practicing my ring-wrapping skills but before I got my mandrel, so I actually had to do them on various-sized marking pens! My partner loves agates and amethysts, so I used a couple of nuggets I had to make her this size 11 cocktail ring. This was also the first photo of mine that ever made it onto Craftgawker. Silver Pine Bark Ring 3 Rugged and woodsy...an unusual handmade ring for an outdoors kinda guy! The texture came from the bark of a pine tree near Happy Jack in Arizona. It's silver, slightly patinated, and a size 11. If you need a different size, let me know. I can make you one like it... just keep in mind no two are ever exactly alike. Lowlands silver-stained roundels Production of silver-stain roundels became a significant industry between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries in the Lowlands (present-day Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands). These examples were created in Flemish glass workshops for art-literate, bourgeois clients or civic buildings. Wealthy businessmen often presented them as gifts to friends and partners. Despite the secular contexts for which they were intended, these paintings on small translucent sheets of glass are usually biblical or apocryphal in theme, meant to be moralizing and cautionary. Mythological or allegorical stories were also popular themes. Made from single pieces of clear glass, the roundels were coated with a silver stain (silver-sulfide compound) with clay or yellow ochre as the binding medium. The stain, applied to the exterior side of the panel, diffused into the molten glass when fired. Finally, Images were drawn on the surface, with some of the modeling and shading achieved by scraping away parts of the coating with a stylus, leaving areas of the glass transparent. The completed composition was touched up with another silver solution, which, depending on factors such as the amounts of paint used and the length of firing, left a pale yellow, gold or amber stain. 1933 Pierce-Arrow Silver Arrow The Pierce Silver Arrow was an immediate hit when it was introduced at the 1933 New York Automobile Show and later at the 1933 Chicago World's Fair. The streamlined design was created by Phillip Wright. Five V-12 limousine chassis were shipped from Buffalo, New York to Pierce-Arrow's parent company, Studebaker Corporation, in South Bend, Indiana. No wooden structural parts were used in the construction of the car; the broad roof panel was hammered from a single sheet of steel, and all of the body panels were welded together. To minimize wind resistance, the headlight moldings sweep back over the doors and the v-shaped inclined grille theme is repeated in the windshield and repeated in reverse in the tiny rear window. Fully skirted rear fenders reduce drag, spare tires are concealed in hinged panels behind the front wheels, and the door handles are recessed. Pierce-Arrow was out of business by May, 1938 but many of the innovations on the Silver Arrow were standard styling features by 1940. Only three Silver Arrows exist today.
