1959: The Year Everything Changed

Acclaimed national security columnist and noted cultural critic Fred Kaplan looks past the 1960s to the year that really changed America
While conventional accounts focus on the sixties as the era of pivotal change that swept the nation, Fred Kaplan argues that it was 1959 that ushered in the wave of tremendous cultural, political, and scientific shifts that would play out in the decades that followed. Pop culture exploded in upheaval with the rise of artists like Jasper Johns, Norman Mailer, Allen Ginsberg, and Miles Davis. Court rulings unshackled previously banned books. Political power broadened with the onset of Civil Rights laws and protests. The sexual and feminist revolutions took their first steps with the birth control pill. America entered the war in Vietnam, and a new style in superpower diplomacy took hold. The invention of the microchip and the Space Race put a new twist on the frontier myth.
Vividly chronicles 1959 as a vital, overlooked year that set the world as we know it in motion, spearheading immense political, scientific, and cultural change
Strong critical acclaim: "Energetic and engaging" (Washington Post); "Immensely enjoyable . . . a first-rate book" (New Yorker); "Lively and filled with often funny anecdotes" (Publishers Weekly)
Draws fascinating parallels between the country in 1959 and today
Drawing fascinating parallels between the country in 1959 and today, Kaplan offers a smart, cogent, and deeply researched take on a vital, overlooked period in American history.

Amsterdam - De Munt

Amsterdam - De Munt

The Munttoren ("Mint Tower") or Munt is a tower in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. It stands on the busy Muntplein square, near the flower market and the start of the Kalverstraat shopping street, where the Amstel river and the Singel canal meet.

The tower was originally part of the Regulierspoort, one of the main gates in Amsterdam's medieval city wall. The gate, built in the years 1480-1487, consisted of two towers and a guard house.

After the gate went up in flames in a 1618 fire, only the guard house and part of the western tower remained standing. The tower was then rebuilt in Amsterdam Renaissance style in 1619-1620, with an eight-sided top half and elegant open spire designed by Hendrick de Keyser, featuring a clockwork with four clockfaces and a carillon of bells.

The carillon was made in 1668 by Pieter Hemony, who added new bells to the instrument that he and his brother Francois had made earlier for the tower of the Amsterdam stock exchange in 1651. In 1873, the original baton keyboard was removed from the carillon, in favor of changes to the clockwork mechanism. In 1960 a manual playing system and a manual baton keyboard was re-installed. Some of the original smaller Hemony bells have been damaged over the years and have been replaced by new bells in 1959 and 1993. The original smaller Hemony bells are now on display in the Amsterdam Historical Museum. The current carillon consists of 38 bells (2 more than the original carillon had). A mechanism causes the bells to chime every quarter of an hour. On Saturdays, between 2 and 3 p.m., Gideon Bodden, the Amsterdam city carillonneur gives a live concert on the bells.

The name of the tower refers to the fact that it was used to mint coins in the 17th Century. In the Rampjaar ("disastrous year") of 1672, when both England and France declared war on the Dutch Republic and French troops occupied much of the country, silver and gold could no longer be safely transported to Dordrecht and Enkhuizen (where coins were normally minted), so the guard house of the Munttoren was temporarily used to mint coin.

The guard house is not the original medieval structure but a 19th Century fantasy. The original guard house, which had survived the fire of 1618 relatively unscathed, was replaced with a new building during 1885-1887 in Neo-Renaissance style. An underpass was added to the building during a 1938-1939 renovation.

The Munttoren will receive new foundations to prevent it from sagging during construction of the Noord/Zuidlijn, the new metro line. The city has allocated 1.9 million euros for this purpose, according to a May 17, 2006 report in the newspaper Het Parool.

Scale models of the tower are exhibited at Madurodam in The Hague and at Mini-Europe in Brussels.

1959: A Novel

Thulani Davis's 1959 is a powerful, poignant coming-of-age novel that captures a dramatic moment in American history as clearly as a photograph. It's the summer of 1959 and Willie Tarrant of Turner, Virginia, is twelve. Her father and other adults in the town are worried about integration -- how it will affect their children's safety and the quality of their education -- but for Willie it's just another problem she's going to have to deal with, like her chores and beginning to go out with boys. Willie and her friends -- kids from good families with good grades -- are being groomed to be sent in the first wave. Before this can happen, though, eight black college students, wearing suits and fresh haircuts, go into the Woolworth's lunch counter -- changing everything. In 1959 one of the most talented writers of her generation has written a book that will become a classic of civil rights literature.

Rolls Royce Silver Wraith II

Rolls Royce Silver Wraith II

I swear I'm not doing a photo shoot on behalf of the Hilton Hawaiian Village! The place has *everything* we need, so there is no need to venture out; thus all my shots are from inside the "Village".

1xp RAW HDR rendered photo taken handheld (I had to lean against a pillar though for extra support) of the Tapa Bar on the first floor of our hotel. Every night has a different highly-talented band playing free of charge. Music varies from local Hawaiian, to Jazz, to Pop. Last night was some oldies (mostly 70's music). Great atmosphere and place to hang out at with a chilled beverage while the kids are asleep upstairs!

This old town bell was mentioned in my WPA book as having been located in the center of town for over 100 years. The book says that it was the town's official timepiece and that it was also used in antebellum days to call together the "slave patrol" if any slaves were suspected of having run away. Today it is in the Clayton Baptist Church cemetery.

Artist: Canibus
Album: 2000 B.C.
Song: 2000 B.C. (Before Canibus)
Typed by: WizdomNXS@aol.com

[Canibus]
Yo! My offense is a mixture of Mike and Muhammad
Knock a nigga unconcious and talk shit
In bare-knuckle boxin', speed is the object
Weavin' and dodgin' with defensive blockin'
So in the ring, you cannot win
The top ten become nine dead if I ever decide to hop in
With the one-two, one-two shot to the chin
knock you out like ten shots of vodka and gin
The beautiful blend of power and strength
From the top of my head, down to where my toe cuticles end
I verbally burn a nigga,
Lyrically hurt a nigga,
Pull a voodoo verse on a nigga,
Kennedy curse a nigga,
Who can spit the words quicker than the average man?
Who can embarrass a man?
Bite you with fangs and mangle ya hands
On candid cam, the Canibus can
The Canibus can with the stamina to damage a man

It's been a long time,
I shouldn't have left you,
Without a strong rhyme to step to
I told y'all (C'mon!!) I roast y'all (C'mon!!)
So come on (Hold on) Hold on!!
It's been a long time,
I shouldn't have left you,
Without a strong rhyme to step to
I told y'all (C'mon!!) I roast y'all (C'mon!!)
So come on (Hold on) Hold on!!

[Canibus]
Yo! I spit for it (lie for it!)
Live for it (die for it!)
Back out the nine, commit a homicide for it
If I'm handcuffed with the right to remain silent for it
I'ma blow trial and do the federal time for it
you mad at the last album, I apologise for it,
Yo, I can't call it, motherfuckin' Wyclef spoiled it,
But this time for 99 I got 5 on it
You should double up and put a dime on it,
Matter of fact, triple your nickle and put 14.99 on it
I'ma shine on it,
Watch Flex drop a bomb on it
About ten times on it
Watch people call a request line for it
Cypher sounds keep pushin rewind on it
Look out for the album with the Canibus design on it
12 O'Clock in the morning you'll be standin on line for it
I'm a live poet, with a sharp ear and eye for it
Coz I tear down mics and put a out of order sign on it

[Canibus]
Yo, I rip shit with the ballistic characteristics
Of a hollow tip at point blank distance
I flip shit when I spit shit
Father forgive Bis,
I just snatched the Jesus piece off some Christians
Coz they sounded like idiots
They went from silver to gold to platinum
After the millenium they'll probably be wearin' Iridium
They so gassed, if a bitch sucked they dick they'd probably cum helium
Y'all niggaz can't be serious,I was nice before ice
Before Christ, before the words let there be light
And a light took over the night
I was born with a mic
Lord of the mic before all plant and animal life
Took this rap shit to new heights
Before the Wright brothers took flight
Before dog fightin' and aerial strikes
Before MC's picked up pens and started to write
Before promotional marketin and posterlights
The Can-I-Bus'll bust up mics
Punch out lights
Punch out your motherfuckin eyesight
For the title bought fight
Ask Ty Fyffe, I snatch the track for half price
The Canibus is too nice
Gimme that mic!

Dream - My 500th Flickr Posting!

Dream - My 500th Flickr Posting!

I just love this image -- it's so sweet. Made for and traded with Rietvanpiet.

During the colder months, we have a monthly, indoor flea market where I can sometimes find old labels, cards, photographs and other scraps. I've only been able to get out there a couple times this year, but the day I found this I also was able to buy about a dozen other little pieces perfect for swapping and making ATCs. My total bill for all those little gems was less than $10.

This is one of the cards I've made using the images I picked up at that flea market. The pink paper flower came to me in one of my swaps, and I scored several yards of the blue rick rack trim at a thrift store for a dime! Those are white brads in the corners -- they reminded me of shoe buttons. The lavendar backing card was actually a bingo card from a bridal shower, and the "Dream" word was some bridal shower confetti! The silver paper in the corners and behind the word came from an envelope I received in a swap. The blue triangles and accent behind the word came from an advertising industry magazine we had at work -- there were pages of heavy, plain colored paper that I salvaged for card making. Sealed it all with Diamond Glaze.

I was happy to hear this morning the card had arrived safely. Thanks again for trading, Riet!

Montegrappa Mille Miglia- In Small Detail

Montegrappa Mille Miglia- In Small Detail

The Pen: With an eminent shape and strength of substance, it reveals in its exquisite beauty the fabrication of the true artisan. The artistic value of the decoration nearly overwhelms the actual construction of the writing instrument. In this way the "largest traveling museum in the world" takes body. The pen's form configures the route that one's fancy takes one to imagine and follow throughout the Mille Miglia. The best engraving masters of Brescia, reunited in the "Engraving shop of Cesare Giovanelli" have understood exactly how to transfer on to this pen that small motor world witnessed by our grandfathers and fathers. The engraved design seems to move along it. The burin, "magic instrument" removes the superficial metal, like a small plough, imprinting color on to the design and so obtaining the various scales of complete grey. From one to ten notches a millimeter takes body and color, as the carbon of the artist on a sheet of blank paper. But, in this case it is far more difficult.

One needs a firm hand and a sound mind to be able to move along the object to be engraved with out committing a single error. It is for this that the "Engraving shop of Cesare Giovanelli" is not only a craftsman's laboratory, but also and above all a school of experience. It is this interpretation of the craft that emerges in their work, each piece unique and unrepeatable.

James Lee Stanley and John Batdorf

James Lee Stanley and John Batdorf

"So where have they been hiding James Lee Stanley? We could say that James Lee Stanley is probably the last great undiscovered singer-songwriter in America. But true as that may be let's say something else, let's say that a diamond has been smuggled into the wasteland…and here is where the wasteland ends" - Tom Robbins, Author of Even Cowgirls Get the Blues

"It is simple, really. With James Lee you get great songs, great guitar playing, great voice and a gifted comedian as well. You are in for a very entertaining evening." - Village Voice

"It is only a long lived singer-songwriter career that lets JAMES LEE STANLEY unite the unpredictable creative turns and the eclectic elements that make up his world. His remarkable ability as a vocalist and composer allow him to create songs, each recorded with a finely crafted with guitar orchestrations that enhance the lyric. But a whole new dimension is added when James Lee performs live. These incredible songs, coupled with his outragously hilarious repartee, make for an evening of hilarity and tenderness and one of the most entertaining concerts on the circuit. He has been hailed as one of the few all time greats and undisputed geniuses among singer-songwriters. Fi Magazine listed his FREELANCE HUMAN BEING as one of the finest recordings of 1998 and one of the Top 200 Recordings of all time - FI Magazine March 1999."

"JAMES LEE STANLEY, the true renaissance man, was born in Philadelphia, PA, and has been recording and performing since he was fourteen. He has toured consistently since he returned from the USAF (as a Chinese linguist) and has performed up to three hundred dates a year since then, with such diverse acts as BONNIE RAITT, ROBIN WILLIAMS, NICOLETTE LARSON and even BILL COSBY. STEVEN WRIGHT chose James Lee as his opening act for three years in a row; a testament to his professionalism and talent."

John Batdorf "was part of the duo Batdorf and Rodney back in the ‘70s. The duo achieved modest fame; had a few radio hits (Can You See Him, You Are A Song, Home Again, and Somewhere In The Night). They were, for a time, signed to both Atlantic and Asylum Records. Batdorf and Rodney disbanded in 1975. In 1976, Batdorf formed the band Silver and had a top-20 hit single, “Wham Bam Shang-a lang.”

"Silver broke up soon after touring with the band America. The next two years, Batdorf was a staff songwriter for The Entertainment Company and had songs recorded by America, England Dan, the Currie Sisters, and Kim Carnes."

"In 1982, Batdorf finally realized his dream of a solo record deal. He signed with 20th Century Fox Records, released a single, and the label promptly went under a week later."

"At that point, Batdorf reassessed his career, and learned that there were opportunities for musicians behind the scenes in TV and commercial production. “I didn’t even know such a career existed,” said Batdorf. For many years, he made his living mostly composing, producing, arranging, and on vocal work for TV shows and commercials."

"Can you imagine what the Rolling Stones songs would have sounded like if Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were California boys with acoustic guitars? Would Satisfaction, Ruby Tuesday, or Last Time have been as powerful if they had been played on acoustic guitars and filled with vocal harmonies?"

"Curious?"

"So were James Lee Stanley and John Batdorf, purveyors of acoustic rock music for decades. They took 11 Rolling Stones classics and turned them into something totally unheard of. You don't have to live in California or play acoustic guitar to be enchanted by "All Wood and Stones" ... an amazing collection of Rolling Stones tunes played on acoustic guitars and brimming with joyous vocal harmonies."
