The multi-talented Mariano Fortuny (1871-1949) was a painter, theatre designer, photographer, inventor and scientist, although he is best known as a creator of extraordinary fabrics and clothes. In 1909 he registered his design (based on the Ionic version of the Greek classical garment the chiton) for the 'Delphos' dress, of which this glistening black columnar example is a typical representative. The dress consists of five narrow widths of pleated silk hand-sewn into a tube just 47 cm wide. The neck and sleeves are adjusted to fit by concealed draw-strings, while a black rouleau, threaded with Venetian glass beads, laces the outer sleeves.

Disney Rarities lives up to its title: It's been impossible to see many of these shorts for decades. Walt Disney bankrupted his fledgling Laugh-O-Gram studio making "Alice's Wonderland," but the short earned Disney his first national distribution contract. Films featuring animated characters in live-action settings were common during the silent era; Disney reversed the situation, placing a live actress (Virginia Davis) in a cartoon world. The "Alice" series ran from 1923-1926, and several girls played the title role. These silent films have been handsomely restored and given upbeat musical tracks by Alex Rannie.
The Oscar-winners "Ferdinand the Bull" (1938) and "Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom" (1953) rank as genuine classics, and have been unavailable for far too long. The wartime cautionary tale "Chicken Little" (1943) displays more imagination than the 2005 feature adaptation of the same story. "The Truth About Mother Goose" (1957) reflects the influence of Sleeping Beauty (1959), which was in production then; the elephants in "Goliath II" (1960) anticipate the ones in The Jungle Book (1967).
"Noah's Ark" (1959), Disney's first stop-motion film, features cleverly designed animals made from pencils, erasers, corks, pipecleaners, and other found objects, but the obstrusive '50s songs quickly cloy. Many of the films from the '50s and early '60s ("Pigs Is Pigs," "A Cowboy Needs a Horse," "Paul Bunyan" ) reflect the look of the UPA Studio. The characters are flatter, simpler, and more angular; the backgrounds, more stylized. Although Disney had dominated the cartoon short during the '30s, the studio largely shifted to feature and television production during the '40s and '50s. "AmeApa" is the Japanese katakana slang for "American Apparel", and I'm guessing they are using the French "non" for no - as in "No American Apparel". Not sure, could be something totally different?

One of 6 sketches for my dresses class. We got a grant from Cotton Inc. and they're paying for our fabrics, so everything will be in cotton. We had to turn in 5 sketches, with color and all the details on it. The colors we could pick from were many and varried, but I only really liked a small handfull. (black, white, red, aqua, and a pair of prints, black on white and white on black swirl)

One of the best indie-pop band in the Philippines. Anglophilic approach with Filipino sensibilities highly indebted to the music of The Beatles, The Smiths and 80s and 90s guitar pop and indie pop bands in the UK.

Orange and Lemons are Clem Castro (electric guitars/vocals), Mcoy Fundales (acoustic guitars/vocals), JM Del Mundo (bass) and Ace Del Mundo (drums), all hail from humdrum towns in Bulacan. Songwriters Castro and Fundales are victims of utter boredom in the mundane provincial way of life which in turn helped inspire a totally and utterly overwhelming zeal is to create extraordinary music by ordinary means. Considered as poets by discerning fans and aficionados their songs are full of heart and is accentuated by moody but catchy and flavorful melodic pop.

Their independently produced first album "Love in the Land of Rubber Shoes & Dirty Ice Cream" (Dec 2003, Terno Recordings) was considered one of the best releases during the year and garnered positive reviews in and out of the country. With little or no airplay, the debut album and their superb live performances generated good word-of-mouth. In true DIY (do-it-yourself) fashion their hard-to-find debut album is available only in Manila at select stores, online indie stores in the Philippines and Japan or thru their gigs.

The major players took notice and recently released their second serving with the aptly titled new album "Strike Whilst the Iron Is Hot" (May 2005, Universal Records) ending their one album deal under Terno Records. Now more accessible to the public, the sophomore album became a best seller nationwide and instantaneously gained mass recognition and critical success with their singles “Hanggang Kailan” and “Heaven Knows (This Angel Has Flown)”.

The recognition paved way to commercial projects with phenomenal upshots such as the ubiquitous “Pinoy Ako” and “Abot Kamay” and the 1930s cover of a local film soundtrack “Blue Moon”, all which has captured the hearts of the young and the old and has made Orange and Lemons classless promoters of Indie Pop Rock in the Philippines.

If I walk into a South Korean bookstore and ask for a national map, this is what I will get.

The entire Korean Peninsula is shown as a unified country, and labeled by the title "Republic of Korea," dating back to the independence fighters during the Japanese colonial era and currently South Korea's official title. However, jurisdictional information (provinces, cities, counties) are up-to-date for both Koreas, including jurisdictional changes made by North Korea since the division, not recognized officially by South Korea but officially used in South Korean news reports on North Korean current events.

The lower left shows an inset map of North Korea using jurisdictional boundaries of 1944, the boundaries officially recognized by South Korea. In fact, South Korea continues to maintain ceremonial provincial governments for the five northern provinces, complete with appointed governors, and they are responsible for maintaining vital records of South Koreans whose home addresses on family census registers are in North Korea.

The "five northern provinces" were North and South Hamgyong, North and South Pyongan, and Hwanghae. Today, Hwanghae is split into two North and South provinces, part of North Pyongan was split into Chagang Province, part of South Hamgyong was split into Ryanggang Province, Pyongyang is a directly governed city equal to a province in itself, and an ever-changing list of special zones also exist. In addition, province boundaries have also been moved here and there; for example, the eastern port city of Wonsan, once the southern end of South Hamgyong, is now the capital of North Korea's portion of Kangwon Province. Many placenames were also changed in honor of Kim Il-sung's family members and key revolutionaries; naming places after people is otherwise not done in Korean context.

On the southern end, jurisdictional changes have been minimal, except for Jeju Island breaking off from South Jeolla to become a Self-Governed Province, and six major cities - Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, Gwangju, Incheon, and Ulsan - becoming Metropolitan Cities equivalent to provinces. Seoul was, and still is, a Special City, itself equivalent to a province.
