1896: Hinde-Rijwielen 1
Hinde Rijwielenfabriek
In 1896 the company Van Gink & Co established one of the very first bicycle factory in the Netherlands in 'villa De Hinde' at De Omval, just outside Amsterdam.
It is a big building, (...) wider and better equipped than the small workshop in the Vossiusstraat wrote a newspaper 'The News of the Day "in November 1896.
The newspaper was also very positive about the two young owners, who were very willing to show around the public in their modern factory.
Helas it did not last long. The Hinde Rijwielenfabriek went bankrupt in 1900.
The Frits Wiersma connection
Frits Wiersma (1894) was born on the Amstel, at the Weesperzijde near the Schollenbrug (Schollen Bridge), a stop for Boat Lines, and a tram terminus.
The city buildings stopped completely there.
If you crossed the bridge, also passed Cafe Schollenbrug and its playground on the corner with the bridge and you followed the river Amstel, then within a five minutes walk there was a peninsula between Amstel and the Weespertrekvaart: De Omval.
Around 1900, De Omval was developing to a business park. It was easily accessible by both road and water.
(You understand: in Frit's time De Omval is no longer the place Rembrandt had drawn in the 17th century.)
Cycling Races
Both the Schollenbrug and the railroad crossing to Utrecht at the end of De Omval (near De Hinde) were often the start or finish of cycling courses.
The City of Amsterdam seldom allowed cycling races in town.
Frits' father was a wielerfan, and often took his son along to such a start or finish. Frits was fascinated by it.
Now
De Omval is not a peninsula any more. About twenty years ago that part of the Weespertrekvaart was muted. It is now a cycle path between tall buildings. Also the contaminated soil has been cleaned up.
Drawn by JG van Caspel.
Johann Georg (Johan) van Caspel (1870 - 1928) was a Dutch artist and architect.
I think this lady is riding her Hinde bicycle through the Dutch bulb fields. That would mean that the dark band behind her the fields forests are and dunes.

Snow! (Tagged)
Yes, yes, I know. I gave in.
Tagged by Jamie.
You know the drill, get tagged, tag 10 people.
Enjoy the random trivia.
1.) I love the snow, regardless of how little snow we get where I live (mid-West UK, near Manchester).
2.) I am a very active person. I am involved in Coaching Cricket, Archery, Canoeing, Badminton and Cycling. I still weight 11stone, but I can honestly say, there's little fat ;) I used to do distance running (400m, 800m and 1500m).
3.) I have cycled the Coast-2-Coast route in 3 days (route 72) for the Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award. A total distance of 256 kilometres. I damaged my knee again on the second day, but managed to finish.
4.) I've made some very good friends online, through MOCpages and Flickr. Whilst I've never met many of them, I still consider them to be very close friends.
5.) I have never broken a bone, although I have ruptured the cartilage in my left knee during a rugby game, and as such, can't run on it for long periods for fear of doing more damage to it. I was on crutches for several months as a result. I can still cycle, due to the amount of force running puts on the knee joint.
6.) With all the new consoles, I still prefer my PS2, which after 6 years, has never broken. Whilst on that, I have to say I dislike Halo fanbois, COD:MW fanbois, brickarms fanbois etc. Give me old-skool consoles anyday.
7.) I'm a very social and laid back/chilled person. I rarely 'get mad', so to speak.
8.) I'm very blunt/straight to the point.
9.) I have never been to a Lego convention. Given that alot of the big ones are in the US, it's rather hard... However, I plan to attend some this year, given that I can now afford to travel to them.
10.) I prefer dogs to cats.

Rings of Power
Anyone who is a friend on facebook or follows me on twitter knows that I'm having an extremely hard time right now. As a result, I've put on another ring that means a lot to me. The plain band is my wedding ring from Giorgia Marchiori, the most important person in my life. I draw most of my strength from her, and I never want to love any other woman but her.
The ring marked with the chevrons was given to me as a teenager by my parents. I usually wear it on a chain because it's too loose, but I've worn it at the moment - held on by my wedding ring, in honour of the help and kindness my parents are giving me in these hard times.
These rings mean the world to me, and I draw strength through them - when I see them, I think of the people who gave them to me and it makes me feel happier instantly. Three people who I love dearly, one of whom is the woman I love with all my heart.
RAW 32/52

I'm very interested in what goes on inside a marriage. This ring is plain on the outside but has it's decoration on the inside.

SILVER BULLION SHORTAGE : SILVER BULLION
Silver bullion shortage : Silver honey amber : Sunshine mint silver bars
Silver Bullion Shortage
- A standard of money that uses a specified quantity of silver to determine the value of currency that is convertible in other countries.
- Silver coins are possibly the oldest mass form of coinage in recorded history. Silver has been used as a coinage metal since the times of the Greeks. Their silver drachmas were popular trade coins.
- silver in raw form, usually .999 fine and in 1,000-oz bar form, as it comes from a refinery. However, 100-oz silver bars are the most common way to buy silver.
- deficit: the property of being an amount by which something is less than expected or required; "new blood vessels bud out from the already dilated vascular bed to make up the nutritional deficit"
- A state or situation in which something needed cannot be obtained in sufficient amounts
- dearth: an acute insufficiency
- Economic shortage is a term describing a disparity between the amount demanded for a product or service and the amount supplied in a market. Specifically, a shortage occurs when there is excess demand; therefore, it is the opposite of a surplus.
Nashville Gas Shortage - Everyone's Out of Gas
A gas shortage hit Nashville as of last night. Those who didn't find out then definitely know today... The gas stations are all empty!
Throughout the city, drivers are making it much worse when they insist on creating hour long lines that back up traffic so they can fill up their entire tanks rather than purchasing only what they need, only IF they need it. The situation is chaos at the very few remaining gas stations in town with gas... This Mapco not being one of them.
In East Nashville, a drive by shooting sprayed bullets at a car in line to purchase gas. Not sure if this was a drive-by for drive-by sake, but most likely this was somehow gas related as well.
Nashville deserves not to have gas for a few days. The greed and selfishness I witnessed at the pumps today while trying to buy 1 gallon of gas is what created this shortage in the first place. There is simply no need for the majority of drivers to buy $50 or $100 worth of gas just to go home and relax for the weekend. Gas is on the way people... let those who really need it have some too.
WATER SHORTAGE
The water scarcity in Pakistan is now showing, very shortly humans will be seen like this and the irony is that our leadership is busy combating the non issues with complete disregard to ground realities. If the water shortage & distribution problem is not handled with wisdom & soon the days are not distant apart when the provinces will rise against each other.

Treasure
Jake the Corgi and I were crossing the road this morning, on the way back from the park, when I spied a shiny ‘silver’ coin, a 50p piece, to be exact, in my path. I looked around quickly, bent down, picked it up and popped it into my pocket. Once around the corner, I took it out and had a look at it, I think it must have been run-over several times. I wondered what I would buy with it. Not very much!! I don’t even think it will buy my favourite chocolate bar!
I remember, as a young girl in the 60's, finding a ten shilling note- the equivalent, in those days, to the 50p I found this morning. I remember being soooo excited- I only ever had that kind of money for Birthdays or Christmas. I expect I spent it on comics, books and probably sweet- lots of sweets.
Actually I have just decided that I will save all the money I find this year- I found another 1p just before I got home- and see how much I get!
New and Used Dragons
All of these coins are from the Australian Perth Mint. The coins are pure silver.
All coins are from the Perth Mint's lunar series though the coins on the right were part of the first lunar series and were minted in the year 2000. The first series proved to be so popular that the Mint decided to do a second lunar series. The coins on the bottom and left are from the second series. All of the other years second series coins are dramatically different from the first series but the series 1 dragons were so insanely popular that the Mint played it safe for the series 2 and essentially just mirrored the image on the coin.
There are 1 oz, 2 oz, 5 oz and 10 oz coins in this picture. They are all .999 silver.
There was a fair profit to be had if you had bought the series one coins. As recently as 2006 you could buy the year 2000 1 oz dragons for $14 but they are now selling for around 9-10 times that.

The Dali Lama talks a lot of sense...at the moment he's in Vadodara, India for a world conference.

Journey of the Magi
This marble stone carving reminded me of a poem.
The Journey of the Magi
T.S. Eliot
"A cold coming we had of it,
Just the worst time of the year
For a journey, and such a long journey:
The was deep and the weather sharp,
The very dead of winter."
And the camels galled, sore-footed, refractory,
Lying down in the melting snow.
There were times we regretted
The summer palaces on slopes, the terraces,
And the silken girls bringing sherbet.
Then the camel men cursing and grumbling
And running away, and wanting their liquor and women,
And the night-fires gong out, and the lack of shelters,
And the cities hostile and the towns unfriendly
And the villages dirty, and charging high prices.:
A hard time we had of it.
At the end we preferred to travel all night,
Sleeping in snatches,
With the voices singing in our ears, saying
That this was all folly.
Then at dawn we came down to a temperate valley,
Wet, below the snow line, smelling of vegetation;
With a running stream and a water-mill beating the darkness,
And three trees on the low sky,
And an old white horse galloped away in the meadow.
Then we came to a tavern with vine-leaves over the lintel,
Six hands at an open door dicing for pieces of silver,
And feet kicking the empty wine-skins.
But there was no information, and so we continued
And arrived at evening, not a moment too soon
Finding the place; it was (you may say) satisfactory.
All this was a long time ago, I remember,
And I would do it again, but set down
This set down
This: were we lead all that way for
Birth or Death? There was a Birth, certainly,
We had evidence and no doubt. I have seen birth and death,
But had thought they were different; this Birth was
Hard and bitter agony for us, like Death, our death.
We returned to our places, these Kingdoms,
But no longer at ease here, in the old dispensation,
With an alien people clutching their gods.
I should be glad of another death.

SILVER TASSIE - SILVER
SILVER TASSIE - WM ROGERS SILVER TEA SET.
Silver Tassie
- (Sean O'Casey) Aldwych, 1969
- The Silver Tassie is an opera in four acts by the English composer Mark-Anthony Turnage. The English libretto was written by Amanda Holden based on the 1927 play of the same name by Sean O'Casey. The opera was composed between 1997 and 1999.
Book: The Silver Tassie
The Silver Tassie was Sean O’Casey’s fourth play and was basically an attack on imperialist wars. In 1928 he submitted it to the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, whose director, WB Yeats, rejected it because it ‘wasn’t suitable’. O'Casey was deeply offended, not least because a couple of his earlier plays – in particular Juno and the Paycock – had saved the Abbey from bankruptcy. As a result of this rejection, O’Casey declared literary war on Yeats and moved to England, where he spent the rest of his life.
This is a rare 1928 first edition of the play, with torn page edges, published by Macmillan and Co Limited, St Martin’s Street, London, and printed by R&R Clark Limited of Edinburgh. It’s dedicated ‘to Eileen with the daffodils in the green vase’. This was Eileen Reynolds, a young actress who later became O’Casey’s wife – and according to her obituary in The Times, theirs was ‘one of the most contented home lives in literary history'.

Recovery 03
During the months in rehab it never occurred to me that I was still vulnerable. Once I'd crossed the threshold I never craved drink, never sought a way out, never thought that I maybe need a few more months to prepare for this, never hoped that I'd be able to go back to some sort of 'social' drinking. I had no idea how rehab & recovery worked but guessed that 'work' was a useful way to start. So I worked. I made lists, typed autobiographies, wrote letters to myself in the future, visualised, created affirmations, started on 'self-talk', read psychology old & new, revised child development, reprised history, created scenarios, lived the life of sobriety. I played at being sober & whole; or at least my idea of it.
Recovery Begins
The 9:03 gate of the Oklahoma City Memorial is known as the Recovery Gate. The minute after Timothy McVeigh killed 168 innocent men, women and children at on April 19, 1995 at the Murrah building and the recovery of us all began. The recovery continues with setbacks as new terror is perpetrated. Never Forget.
