"To get wrinkles out of silk, wool, and rayon clothes that can’t take direct heat, place a piece of foil on your ironing board, then lay the garment flat over it. With the steam button down, pass the iron three to four inches over the fabric several times. Wet heat radiating from the foil helps smooth out wrinkles. "

Tourist station under attack - Etna 2001

Tourist station under attack - Etna 2001

This scene renders a very graphic idea of how things looked on the south flank of Etna during the first week of the large flank eruption of July-August 2001. On 17 July, the volcano had opened on its upper south flank, at the very base of the Southeast Crater (one of Etna's four summit craters), which had been erupting episodically for several weeks, and continued to do so through the four days of intense premonitory seismic activity. Its final paroxysm, with powerful Strombolian explosions and lava fountains, came in the early morning hours of 17 July. A few hours later, new vents opened at its base, and this marked the shift from the six-years-long summit eruptions (the "Millennium Fireworks") to the first flank eruption of Etna since 1993.

The first new vents were at about 2950 m elevation; on the afternoon of 17 July, a second new fissure opened at about 2750 m on the south flank, and lava flowed from both fissures at relatively slow pace. Things got more dramatic early on the next morning: a short fissure ripped open at only 2100 m elevation, uncomfortably close to the tourist facilities around the Rifugio Sapienza and the nearby Etna cable-car. Lava from this fissure initially crept down, at a sluggish pace, the flank toward the promiment Monti Silvestri (craters of the 1892 eruption) and the access road from Zafferana, the Provincial Road 92, where also two restaurants were located. During the day, this lava flow cut the Provincial Road 92, passing extremely close to the two restaurants, and started to descend into the direction of the town of Nicolosi, although it would have to cover a distance of nearly 10 km to reach the first houses of Nicolosi.

Things got still more complicated when, on the afternoon of 19 July - two-and-a-half days after the first fissure opened - a huge new vent blasted open at approximately 2570 m elevation, in an area until then known as "Piano del Lago" (the plain of the lake). This vent produced no lava flow but instead its activity was entirely explosive, caused by interaction of hot magma with groundwater just below the ground surface. A tall column of steam and ash rose from this vent, and all of a sudden Sicily was facing a problem that was to become known worldwide only nine years later, due to the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland: the threat to air traffic caused by volcanic ash clouds. The international airport of Catania was closed, and remained so repeatedly, sometimes for days in a row, over the next few weeks.

Yet another eruptive fissure opened early on 20 July, in a remote location on the upper northeast flank, in the Valle del Leone, and three days later, lava was briefly emitted from a small fissure on the lower southeast side of the Southeast Crater cone, making this the sixth new fissure to open. There was also a seventh vent active, just below the "Levantino" on the north-northeast side of the Southeast Crater cone, where lava had apparently been emitted from the beginning of the flank eruption. So as of 23 July, Etna was erupting from seven different eruptive fissures, most on the south flank but two also on the upper northeastern side. This was indeed one of the most complex eruptions seen at this volcano in historical time.

For the first five days of the eruption, I was blocked in Tuscany, more than 1000 km to the north, due to family problems. I finally managed to get on a train late on 21 July and arrived in Catania on the afternoon of the 22nd, where the sky was darkened by a dense ash cloud rising from the vent at 2570 m elevation, and much of the volcano being shrouded in gas plumes rising from the other vents and the various lava flows issuing from them. The scene was surreal, unlike anything I had seen at Etna in more than a decade, and for many people who had lived their entire lives at the volcano, the feelings must have been the same in those days.

After a brief visit to the Rifugio Sapienza area on the evening of 22 July, with a group of German reporters, I was back on the scene the morning after, and this is how it looked like. All the details in this image are explained by notes attached to it.

This symmetric building with exposed red brick, tent-like towers, porches and silver roof is the State History Museum. Constructed in 1874 by Vladimir Shervud (1833-1897), the building was designed to evoke the memory of various Russian styles that preceded it. As part of the restoration work, the spires are again topped by gilded double eagles reminiscent of the tsars' times. Supported by private donations when it opened in 1883, the museum contained over 300,000 objects. Today it has over four million items, including the largest collection of artifacts tracing the history of Russia from the Stone Age until today. When the building reopened in 1997 only a few rooms were finished, each representing a different period or region. Renovations, however, continue and more rooms will be on display. In 2001 only 15 of 45 rooms were open to the public and five of those are used for temporary exhibitions. The ticket office is reached by going through the Resurrection Gate, then to the right after the entrance. Further into the building and down the stairs on the left are the coat rooms and bathrooms. While the videos in the lobby are multilingual, the captions for the exhibitions are only in Russian. To reach the main exhibition, take the staircase in the great hall which used to be the ceremonial stairway to Red Square. A family tree of the Russian monarchs dating back to Vladimir and Olga of Kiev decorates the ceiling.

Prophecy of the Eagle & The Condor

For his Silver Wave debut, Peruvian wind player Tito La Rosa addresses a familiar theme--a future socio-spiritual reunification of the Americas--and musically articulates the vision with an agreeable mix of humility and passion. La Rosa, a descendant of the Quechua Indians of the Andes, enlists the talents of labelmate Mary Youngblood (Native American flute) to intertwine the native musical traditions of two hemispheres, and the result is attractively reverent and reflective, flavored with occasional displays of dignified celebration. Producer Tom Wasinger carefully embellishes La Rosa's organic instrumentation (he even blows a conch shell on the prayerful "The Invocation) with just enough modern-day flourishes (a faint keyboard glow on "All One Nation;" traces of guitar and piano on selected tracks) to make this worthwhile, low-key disc appealing to both contemporary and traditional listeners. Highlights: a pair of softly percussive charmers, "Fire Spirit" and "The Dance of the Puma and the Wolf," and the delicate, respectful duet shared by La Rosa and Youngblood on "El Muney (The Power of Love)." --Terry Wood

Fruit Stripe Chantilly Dress

Fruit Stripe Chantilly Dress

Colette Patterns' Chantilly dress. This was a practice dress, made with a thrifted $3 bed sheet and lined with muslin. I cut the yoke and midriff front on the bias, to add some visual interest. I cut the midriff front a couple sizes bigger than the rest of the dress, to accommodate my post-Arlo waist. This was my first time installing an invisible zipper, though it turned out that I could pull it over my head without using the zipper--go figure.

I think the stripes are a bit much, but given the low cost of materials, I'm happy with the finished product. I'll definitely make my next Chantilly in lighter-weight fabrics, as this one seems a little bulky.

  • The medical uses of silver include its incorporation into wound dressings to treat external infections, and its use as an antiseptic and disinfectant in medical appliances. There is however insufficient evidence to support its use in wound healing.

  • a suspension of submicroscopic metallic silver particles in a colloidal base. Long-term use of silver preparations can lead to argyria, a condition in which silver salts deposit in the skin, eyes, and internal organs, and the skin turns ashen-gray.

Strokkur erupting

Strokkur erupting

The biggest geysir on Iceland, starting an eruption.

A second later it reached a height of about 30 m.

A response to a comment regarding the colors: They are real.

The blue color in the water is due to colloidal silica, which is always present in hot wells on Iceland., The level is very variable, but some wells are very blue. The color of the water in Strokkur is at the most intense just before the bubble is bursting, as seen in the photo below.

The red color in the background is due to lava from the hill behind, which is partially weathered to a reddish brown soil. Can bee seen several places on Iceland.

I adjust exposure (constrast and darkness/brightness) to get saturated colors, but I have not adjusted the colors themselves. The colors of the grass, the clouds and of the faces are all as you expect.

1900's Jacob Amsler #5 Pantograph Electrum Planimeter. It was marketed in the United States by Keuffel and Esser Company of New York.
has Jacob Amsler's signature engraved into the long tracing-arm near the tracing stylus. This planimeter was designed to quantify very large and very small areas and can handle a circle up to 38 inches in diameter! That is well beyond the range of most planimeters making this one a prize catch for any museum or collector.
The original case is lined in green velvet and is covered in leather.
The 1900 Keuffel and Esser catalog lists Amsler's #5 Pantograph Polar Planimeter under their Model Number 4256, however, on this particular instrument only the K+E branding was done with an etching on the stationary arm near the 35 gram German Silver pinned weight. There is an anomalous number etched on the long tracing arm which does not match either the K+E or Amsler's model numbering system, so maybe someone who knows more about Amsler's work could provide insights on what the number 64724 might represent.
Jacob Amsler invented the planimeter and algorithms for accurately estimating areas with unusual boundaries. He designed this planimeter to accommodate very large and very small areas as denoted in his workshop's catalog.
The pantograph feature is used for measuring very small areas opposed to tracing out the boundary of an area at a smaller scale as one would assume a pantograph would be used for. In this case the small secondary stylus is guided by the long tracer-arm for increased accuracy.
The following is cited from the Powerhouse Museum on some history of planimeters...
Production notes
At the beginning of the nineteenth century a number of inventors across Europe, Bavarian Johannes M. Hermann (1814), the Florentine Tito Gonnella (1825), and the Swiss Johannes Oppikofer (1826), worked independently on developing the planimeter to measure irregularly shaped plots of land or similar closed curves on maps. This was achieved by the rotation of a disc linked to a tracer and rolling against the side of a cone giving a measure of the area swept out by the tracer. Modifications altering the wheel and cone to a disc and wheel mechanism were made by the Swiss engineer, Caspar Wetli and the Austrian instrument-maker, Charles Starke in 1849. Then in 1855 the Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxell designed an improved instrument.
However, none of these was as simple or successful as the polar planimeter invented by the Swiss mathematician, Jacob Amsler in 1854. Amsler was born on 16 November 1823 in Stalden bei Brugg, Switzerland, the son of a farmer. He grew up in Stalden and was educated in the local schools. After graduation he studied theology firstly at the University of Jena, Germany and then at the University of Konigsberg, in the former capital of East Prussia, (from 1946 known as Kaliningrad, USSR). At Konigsberg Amsler changed his area of study to mathematics and physics inspired by his teacher Franz Neumann.
In 1848 Amsler was awarded his doctorate and then returned to Switzerland to continue his education, firstly at the observatory in Geneva then in Zurich where he qualified as a university lecturer. In 1851 he continued his research into magnetism, heat conduction and the attraction of ellipsoids while employed at a Gymnasium in the Swiss city of Schaffhausen.
In 1854 Amsler married Elsie Laffon, the daughter of a well-known Swiss scientist. Shortly after this Amsler changed his area of research and began to study the construction of precision mathematical instruments and quickly had an idea for the design of a new type of planimeter. He replaced the complex earlier arrangements of cones or rotating discs with two pivoted metal rods. The end of one rod held a tracer, while the end of the other served as a fixed pole. A measuring wheel attached to the tracer arm near the vertex recorded motion parallel to the direction of that arm. It was based on polar co-ordinates whereas earlier instruments were based on cartesian co-ordinates.
In order to make money from his invention, Amsler set up a workshop in Schaffhausen, in 1854 especially designed to produce his polar planimeter. In 1856 he published a paper 'Uber das Planimeter 'in which he gave details of his idea. By the same year his agents for the planimeter included Leebours & Secretin in Paris, Amsler & Wirz in Philadelphia, Ertel & Sohn in Munich and Elliott in London. From 1857 Amsler was devoted full time to precision toolmaking. His planimeter was small, sturdy, easy to use and popular.
Three years later he had given up all his other interests to concentrate fully on producing instruments in the workshop. By the time of his death in Schaffhausen on 3 January 1912 some 50,000 polar planimeters and 700 more complex momentum planimeters had been made in Amsler's business. Amsler went on to invent many other measuring instruments but none was as important as the polar planimeter. However, they were of sufficient qu

Pretty pointless upload I guess, but still. This is the bracelet my big cousins, Jemma and Shannon brought me home when they went on holiday when I was around six/seven. I'm not sure why I like it so much, when I was little I thought it was beautiful but the more I look at it now, I realize how plain and boring it must look to everybody else
But it'll always be beautiful and mean a lot to me. I wear it a lot, almost everyday. I haven't seen or even heard from my cousins since I was around eleven. I was never too close with Jemma, she's closer to my big brother's in age, but Shannon is six months older than I am, she was more like a sister to me.

One of the world's most expensive amplifiers appeared at Walrus for an MOT or to be more precise a voltage conversion from 110V to 240V. These secondhand Audio Note Gakuon monoblocks were purchased from the States for 20K GBP, the original price was 120K USD! The Japanese made valve amps are beyond hallowed, they utilise an obscene amount of pure silver in the transformers (about 40 lbs of it per pair!). Just in case you're wondering, the power output is a paltry 50W per channel.

Touch of Love

Touch of Love

"I want more lives in which to love
This world so full of beauty,
I want more days to use the ways
I know of doing duty;
I ask no greater joy than this
(So much I am life's lover,)
When I reach age to turn the page
And read the story over,
(Oh love stay near!)

Oh rapturous promise of the Spring!
Oh June fulfilling after!
If Autumns sigh, when Summers die,
'Tis drowned in Winter's laughter.
Oh maiden dawns, oh wifely noons,
Oh siren sweet, sweet nights,
I'd want no heaven could earth be given
Again with its delights,
(If love stayed near!)

There are such glories for the eye,
Such pleasures for the ear,
The senses reel with all they feel
And see and taste and hear;
There are such ways of doing good,
Such ways of being kind,
And bread that's cast on waters fast
Comes home again, I find.
(Oh love stay near.)"

Ella Wheller Wilcox (American Author and Poet, 1850-1919)

Companions Of The Sun.

Companions Of The Sun.

"There is a flower, a little flower
With silver crest and golden eye,
That welcomes every changing hour,
And weathers every sky.

Oh, this small flower, to Nature dear,
While moons and stars their courses run,
Wreathes the whole circle of the year,
Companion of the Sun.

It smiles upon the lap of May,
To sultry August spreads its charms,
Lights pale October on his way,
And twines December's arms..."

A Unique Greek Silver Hemidrachm of Melitaia (Thessaly), a Noble Depiction of Zeus

A Unique Greek Silver Hemidrachm of Melitaia (Thessaly), a Noble Depiction of Zeus

Melitaia
First half of the 4th century BC. Hemidrachm (Silver, 3.03 g 6). Laureate head of Zeus to right, his hair and mustache finely trimmed. Rev. M-E-L Forepart of a bull to right, his head slightly facing; all within an oak wreath with acorns. Cf. Traite IV, 470 and pl. CCLXXXVIII, 7 (a drachm with a head of Zeus and the reverse of a bull, surely by the same die cutter). Unique, a coin of great beauty and significance. Toned and of splendid early 4th century style. Extremely fine. Ex The Numismatic Auction 2, 12 December 1983, 100 ($7500).

The silver coinage of Melitaia must have been struck in a single episode, probably during the first quarter of the 4th century. Apparently only a very few examples are known, the famous and unique drachm in Boston (once in the collection of Photiades Pasha = Traite IV 470), this hemidrachm (apparently once in an old Greek collection prior to its appearance in the 1983 sale), the diobol cited in HN? (p. 301; this coin may be misdescribed), and an obol in Berlin (once in the collection of Count A. F. von Prokesch-Osten = Traite IV 471 and SNG Munich 115: the types on this coin, head of Dionysos/Lion’s head, are rather unexpected for Melitaia and this coin may also not be from Thessaly [BCD suggests Knidos in Caria]). These pieces were accompanied by somewhat more common bronzes, all with a bee as the reverse type and with either Zeus or a nymph on the obverse. The unifying characteristics of the earliest bronzes and the two known silver coins are their superb style: while the coinage was clearly a limited one, the city authorities insisted on having coins that were superbly designed and of very high quality - as this coin certainly is. A note from BCD: One of the most desirable coins in this catalogue and indeed in all BCD collections. At the time that this coin went up for auction the consignor, belonging to the old fashioned school of dealers that would not allow anything to be sold below the price they thought was the right price, placed a ‘last moment’ bid on his coin that was quite out of proportion with the other reserves of the sale. Fortunately, when the coin "opened" at $7,000 it took just one bid from ASW acting on behalf of BCD to secure it. It is now estimated at a fraction of that price and may offer its new owner not only the joy of acquiring a fascinating and unique coin, but perhaps also the satisfaction of knowing that the price paid is a bargain when compared to the hammer price of nearly 30 years ago.

An Excessively Rare and Important Greek Silver Didrachm of Athens (Attica), from the Later Wappenmünzen Series

Provenance:

Kunstfreund sale, 1974, lot 22.
S. Weintraub Collection.

A very rare example of the later ‘Wappenmunzen’ series of Athens.

The designs of the earliest pieces of Wappenmunzen were surrounded by a thick circular border. In the middle series this was dropped, and the pieces with the gorgoneion are the latest. We can tell this since they alone are also found in the larger denomination, the tetradrachm, which bears a distinct reverse design of the head of a bull or panther. Two of the reverse dies for the didrachms show, as here, an intermediate stage between the diagonal punch and a proper reverse type, since in one of the angles of the reverse punch can be seen a tiny panther’s head, exactly like the larger version which fills the reverse of some of the tetradrachms.
