In the late 1800s, Frederick Henry Royce owned a small electric crane manufacturing company in Manchester, England. He bought a 1904 Decauville automobile, but felt he could do better. So, in his own shop, he began construction of a car with the features he desired most: silence, good performance, and a high degree of craftsmanship throughout.
Royce built three cars in all, selling one of them to a man who introduced him to Charles Stewart Rolls, owner of a London automobile dealership. Rolls was immediately impressed with the qualities of Royce’s quiet, smooth-running car. C.S. Rolls and F.H. Royce entered into automobile production, creating the renowned Rolls-Royce marque.
At the London Automobile Show in 1906, the new Rolls-Royce “Silver Ghost” model was introduced. It was the first of the Silver Ghosts, a line of luxury automobiles that was to extend without substantial change until 1925 and that, more than any other model Rolls-Royce would ever produce, established and justified its makers’ claim, “The Best Car in the World.” The Silver Ghost displayed is one of the earliest in existence in the United States.
