SILVER PALATE COOKBOOK : CLEANING SILVER EARRINGS Silver Palate Cookbook
simmering..... The last 15 minutes of this soup sees the addition of sliced mushrooms, a handful of fresh green beans and the soup noodles. It's finished with fresh dill. Sometimes I add a squeeze of lemon right before serving to brighten up the flavors. Here you go: 4 medium-size leeks (white and light green part only), quartered and diced 1/2 cup butter (1 stick) 2 medium carrots, peeled and finely chopped 3 ribs celery, finely chopped 2 tsps kosher salt 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper 2 1/2 quarts chicken stock 1 cup dry white wine (1/2 cup dry vermouth will do in a pinch) 2 whole boneless, skinless chicken breasts 8 medium-size mushroom, cleaned, thinly sliced 2 cups egg noodles 4 oz green beans, ends trimmed, cut diagonally to 1" 3 Tbsps fresh dill, chopped fine Keeping root intact, slice leeks lengthwise in quarters and rinse until sand/dirt is removed. Slice into fine dice. Melt butter in large heavy saucepan over medium-low heat. Add leeks, carrots, celery salt and pepper. Saute for 5 minutes, remove from heat. Bring chicken stock and wine to boiling in a stockpot. Add chicken. Reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 15 minutes. Remove chicken and let cool. Add dry egg noodles to stock, simmer for 6 minutes. Add leek mixture and green beans to stock. Simmer uncovered over low heat for 5 minutes. Shred cooled chicken breasts while beans are cooking. Add shredded chicken and mushrooms to stock and simmer uncovered for 5 minutes. Take soup off heat. Add chopped dill and a squeeze of lemon just before serving. *recipe adapted from "The Silver Palate Good Times Cookbook" Cranberry Walnut Bread 937 Breakfast 365-001 I received The Silver Palate Cookbook for Christmas and was drawn to the recipe for Cranberry Bread. Arthur is a geography whiz who in the 8th grade could draw the entire United States map from memory, with all the state outlines and the capitals correctly identified. Elkhorn Montana Elkhorn has been designated one of the most important historical sites in the West and renovation has been undertaken by the Western Montana Ghost Town Preservation Society. Elkhorn flourished in the 1880's and 90's, when millions of dollars worth of gold and silver were mined. Reportedly the town had 2,500 residents, with 500 woodcutters, mostly of French and Norwegian descent, were employed to supply wood for the town and the mill. Dating from the second wave of Montana's gold and silver rushes, Elkhorn has survived as one of the better ghost towns in the west. Its principal mine, the Elkhorn, was discovered around 1872 by Peter Wys, a native of Switzerland, and has changed hands repeatedly. He sat down in his favorite chair to take a nap, fell asleep and never woke up again. When I die, that's how I want to go. I love this picture of him reading to me. Some of my best childhood memories are of my Gram and Pap. I loved going to their house every Sunday afternoon. My uncles and aunts and cousins would all come, and we'd break out the Mancini's bread and Silver Star meats and eat sandwiches until we'd be ready to burst. My Gram would fry bologna ("jumbo" as we called it) with ketchup ... mmm. After we all ate, we kids would get Klondike bars. It tasted just like a Dreamsicle. When we grandkids all grew up and made our own families, we didn't stop every Sunday like we used to. It was more hit-or-miss. But if I told Grandma we were coming to the house on Sunday, Pap-Pap would go to Mancini's and buy bread and rolls and stop at the grocery store to pick up lunch meat. On the Sunday before he died, Melissa suggested to me that we go visit them. It had been a few weeks since we'd gone there, so I made up a pot of Polish Spaghetti and we stopped over to visit. We ate sandwiches, so I left the spaghetti. As we were getting ready to go, my Pap said he'd like a plate of spaghetti, so I took off my coat and heated some up for him. On Monday, Gram called me to tell me that Pap-Pap loved the spaghetti and he said it was great. I figured I'd take another pot up the following Sunday. But when I got home from work on Tuesday, I found out that he'd died. I was so happy that I got to have one more lunch & one more "I love you" with my Pap. Genesee Country Village & Museum - Silver Base Ball Park This is a shot of a section of the Silver Base Ball Park - a 19th-century replica ball park (on a very rainy, gloomy day). Looking out across the field you will notice the high end of the fence. Like modern ball parks, advertising was prominently placed. The high board fence in the far right of the field, in fact, was generally reserved for a tobacco advertisement. Info: Homeplate - In base balls early days, home plate was frequently a small inverted washbasin buried in the ground. Later it was replaced by a round metal plate. The proportions of the field are smaller than a modern diamond. The outfield fence is closer, the area behind homebase is smaller, and the pitcher's "mound" is only 45 feet from homeplate and isn't a mound at all. You also won't see rubber covered bases. In the 1860s sand or sawdust filled the bags making first, second and third bases. More info: Aces, matches and strikers -- "aces" were runs, "matches" were games and a "striker" was a batter. In addition players didn't wear gloves, catchers masks or any protective gear. Bats could vary in length and the balls were pitched underhanded much like softball today. Prior to 1865, not only would catching a fly ball produce an out, catching a ball on the first bounce would too. Pitching was done with a locked arm and hand upon the leg. There was only one umpire / referee and his decision was final. However, he would occasionally take into account a spectators view of the play before making a call. This field is located behind George Eastman's Boyhood Home near rthe Antebellum Village section at the Genesee Country Village & Museum, 1410 Flint Hill Road (George Street) in Mumford, NY Home Plate Survey markings for where home plate will go in the new Twins ballpark.
