A brief review of the car: Like all new Vauxhalls it looks good, the 5 door actually looks better than the 3 door. The Design was the top of the range but was dropped in January and the colour has also stopped being produced so its sort of a limited edition, but it isnt. It comes with air conditioning, CD, front and rear foglights and alloy wheels, along with more stuff that i cant remember. The 1.2 engine is keener than our old 1.6 and pulls well without making much noise. The car feels well-built and safe but somewhat heavy.

This particular car has done 41,000 miles which is a lot but has been from Wales to London multiple times and its all motorway miles. Unlike my fathers cars which are usually run into the ground (when they decide to work, that is) my mother has religiously maintained it. This car was vandalised about a year ago and ?600 of damage was caused, Vauxhall kindly sent a courtesy car while they repaired the damage. Shortly after my mother had a run in with a wall and had to do some DIY (more like I had to do some DIY as i am having a "free ride", yeah rights) and is hardly noticable but unfinished. The SATNAV has also managed to break one of the vents on the centre console but mechanically this car hasn't had any problems.
This car is also an ex demonstrator, and Vauxhall have attempted several times to get it back!

My mother, by the way, does not look like that.

Five Tips for Buying a Heater
Choosing a space heater is a matter of sifting through a bewildering array of types, power ratings, and fuel sources. Let's break it down a little to make the process easier.
What are the different types of space heaters?

Radiant heaters emit infrared radiation that directly warms the objects in front of the heaters (rather than the surrounding air). If you only need heat by a desk or in a small section of a room, a radiant heater is quiet and will use very little power.

How powerful a heater do I need?

I shoot graveyards , cemeteries I would love to shoot Hindu crematoriums but it is out of bounds in enclosed space.

So I shoot the Bandra Police cemetery on Hill Road where cars cry out in pain and unending suffering and third degree treatment bang opposite the Asian Paint swanky showroom.

There are cars lying here now reduced to tin robbed of all important body parts , in one of the rickshas impounded by the cops a drunk has made his home he will soon be getting a ration card too , everything is possible in Mumbai ask Vikas Bhalla he will tell you how a stall guy got a ration card with the address details of Vikas's bungalow on Hill Road.

Well I digress the Bandra Police cemetery is a place you should visit once in a while and this is the only hallowed space where only the cars dead and rotting are human the soul of man gone dead.

Here the cars talk of national integration though they are disintegrating since they were bought here caught for being an accomplice in a criminal act, this is a filmy story actually but as I am a photo blogger I will try now to trespass on writer territory.

Here in the evening after maghrib you will see a a Muslim man with a skull cap reciting fatiah on the cars and hoping that the case comes up for hearing soon so they can have a proper burial withh Gusal and Namaze Janaza too.

And this is a satire if you read it as such or a reality of life, in another corner there is a stud from Veronica road weeping on a wheel that was once his treasured Enfield bike..its another story that dead drunk he had run over an old actresses pug by mistake ..

A little ahead there is a bare chested guy in a saffron dhoti chanting Ganesha mantras on a steering wheel this is what remain of his new Innovo he had in sheer madness driven the vehicle through the doors of his fat miserly father in laws house all he had asked his newly married wife was a Rolex watch for his bare wrist and they had a fight in the struggle she got accidentally burnt by the stove ..he has just come out on bail.

His wife is getting a new face at Masani hospital .

The most saddening sight is of a Bawa in a sadra who keeps coming here every night with a torch trying very hard to find his Bullet bike and he has not found it yet.

Just outside the Banndra Police Station is a Vespa and a Honda both are in bad shape they were both caught near Bandra Fort in the act of gang raping hijras blind folded... that they got fucked in the bargain is not part of this scenario.

So the misery the pain of this cemetery on Bandra Hill Road I shoot .. as I pass this cemetery twice a day once in the morning and once late at night.

So I'll give you guys a little background information on the purpose of this photo. Last year, my brother got in a longboarding accident that almost took his life. We basically spent most of the summer in the hospital until he was better. I'm so thankful that he's alive (:
This is more of an awareness photo.
I hope that anyone who skateboards/longboards/bikes will wear a helmet, because it's scary stuff. I don't want anyone to go through the experience that my brother and my family had.

I like hot food. Hot temperature and hot spicy. Not blazing or
sickeningly or lifethreateningly hot (ie. stupid macho hot) but a nice
warm slightly-edgy hot. Normally I can make food to my own
satisfaction without any problem. One of the hardest parts of
recovering from oral surgery is smelling other people eating things I
can't have. Potato chips. Gumbo. You get the idea.

One of the problems with being a single mom and no car is, well, a lot
of stuff. Recently, I had my birthday, my state ID expired and this
made life interesting when I tried to vote yesterday. They let me do
it, but it was clear that I was not going to be able to keep
functioning with an expired state ID. For visits to the Secretary of
State Office I am largely dependent on the good will (and wheels) of
other folk. I am inclined to not be too terribly picky about options
for these. I had an offer of a ride to get the state ID updated, if I
could do at at teh time the office opened today, which was supposed to
be 8am. OK, I'll try to make that work. Early morning is my strong
time, right?

Unfortunately, the shop didn't open at 8am, it was at 9am. That left
an hour to hang out in the parking lot, which happened to have a nice
mom-&-pop eatery open for breakfast. I hadn't had solids since the
surgery, but it was just too tempting. I ordered scrambled eggs and
one pancake. The scrambled eggs were ok. Eating the pancake hurt, so I
cut it up into really tiny bites. I will wait a few more days before I
try that again.

Meanwhile, my usual friends were sitting there on the table.
McIlhenny's, Clancy's and Frank's. I have a McIlhenny's Tabasco apron.
I love it. My son has been using it while I am under the weather. I
think he plans to abscond with it. Right now, all I can do with hot
sauce is look at it. It looks mighty fine, doesn't it?

One of my worries was getting medical references for the iPhone. The
good free programs available are Epocrates, Medcalc, Skyscape,
Obwheel, Eponyms and Eyechart. These are available thought the
appstore under the medical category. The skyscape is just a basic drug
and disease index and not the full programs such as 5MMC. Those need
to be purchased. Still it's not a bad start.

The Horseshoe Weir at Belper

This shows the Northern arm of The Horseshoe Weir on The River Derwent at Belper, Derbyshire, England, UK. The UK OS Grid Reference is SK345481.

The small town of Belper was founded by Norman monks who called it “Beau Repaire”, which approximately means “lovely sanctuary”.

The weir was installed in 1797 to provide sufficient hydraulic head for a breast-shot suspension wheel that powered the early cotton mills of Jedediah Strutt. It is listed Grade Two Star.

The structure was built to power the West Mill and by 1820 impounded some 5.8 hectares of pond on the Derwent. It was modified and increased in height in 1819 and 1843.

By 1804 the West Mill had been joined by a North Mill on the left ( Southern ) bank of the Derwent. This was equipped with a large but lightly built suspension wheel that was eighteen feet in diameter and twenty feet long. It was by Thomas Hewes. The wheel engaged a spur cog that transmitted power to a shaft that in turn distributed the power to various zoned stories of the building via rigid rods and bevel gears.

The existing North Mill superseded one built in 1786 and burnt down in 1803. Subsequent to advice from Charles Bage who in 1796 built the World’s first iron-framed building, a flax mill at Ditherington, Strutt built the new North Mill of brick arches over a frame of turtle-backed cast-iron beams, mounted on cast-iron columns. The beams are yoked together with wrought-iron ties and the floors lightened with clay pots. The foundations are of stone. Taken together the design is almost fireproof.

Originally, the cotton was carded on the third and fourth floors and spun in 4236 separate threads using water frames on the first and second stories. The sixth floor was a school. Later, mule spinners were installed to diversify the product.

The Strutt Family divested at Belper in the 1950’s and my understanding is that English Sewing Cotton Limited has suspended operations at its Belper sites. The North Mill is open to the public at regular times and is listed Grade One. Together with the Bage flax mill it may be regarded as the ancestor of steel-framed buildings everywhere including classic American skyscrapers though not, alas, of the suspension designs favored by Old World engineers and tragically exemplified by the New York Twin Towers.

The youngest, up to 12 or 13, were employed as piecers working up to 101/2 to 11 hours. The older ones worked 11 to 12 hours.

1839. At Stanley, a steam engine of 50 hp. and 5 water wheels, 1 of 30hp. and 4 of 25 hp.

Vittala Temple, Hampi

Vittala, after whom the temple is known, is a form of lord Vishnu. This aspect of Vishnu was worshiped in this part of the country as their cult deity by the cattle herds.

The temple was originally built in the 15th century AD. Many successive kings have enhanced the temple campus during their regimes to the present form. Yon can even see the remains of a township called Vittalapura that existed around this temple complex. The highlight of Vittala temple is its impressive pillared halls and the stone chariot. The halls are carved with an overwhelming array of sculptures on the giant granite pillars. The stone chariot located inside the campus is almost an iconic structure of Hampi.

One typically accesses the campus through the eastern entrance tower, next to which the ticket counter is located. On entering through this massive tower, the first thing draws your attention would be a series of compact platforms along the central axis of the campus. At the end of these platforms stands the Stone Chariot. This is in fact a shrine built in the form of a temple chariot. An image of Garuda (the eagle god) was originally enshrined within its sanctum. Garuda, according to the Hindu mythology, is the vehicle of lord Vishnu. Thus the Garuda shrine facing the temple’s sanctum is symbolic.

It may appear (and sometimes even referred to) as a monolithic structure. In reality this stone shrine was built with many giant granite blocks. The joints are smartly hidden in the carvings and other decorative features that adorn the Stone Chariot. The chariot is built on a rectangular platform of a feet or so high. All around this base platform is carved with mythical battle scenes. Though the chariot is not resting on it, the four giant wheels attached mimic the real life ones complete with the axis shafts & the brakes. A series of concentric floral motifs decorate the wheels. It appears from the marks on the platform, where the wheels rest, the wheels were free to move around the axis.

You can still see the remains of the painting on the carvings of the chariot. Probably because it was relatively protected from the natural wearing elements, the undercarriage of the chariot spots one of the best preserved specimens of this kind of paintings. It is believed the whole of the Vittala Temple’s sculptures were once beautifully painted in similar fashion using the minerals as medium.

In front of the chariot two elephants are positioned as if they are pulling the chariot. In fact these elephants where brought from elsewhere and positioned here at a later stage. Originally two horses were carved in that position. The tails and the rear legs of the horses can be still seen just behind these elephant sculptures. A broken stone ladder once gave access to the sanctum is kept between the elephants. You can still spot the marks on the floor and the doorsill where once the ladder stood.

On leaving the Stone Chariot you reach the main hall in front of the Vittala temple. This hall though partially damaged is still awe inspiring. Facing the Stone Chariot, a series of steps flanged by elephant balustrades gives access to this elevated open hall called the Maha-Mantapa (the great hall). The balustrades on the east and west porch of this hall is more dramatic with giant lion Yalis fighting the relatively dwarf elephants. The Maha-Mantapa stands on a highly ornate platform. This fluted platform is carved with a series of floral motifs. The lowermost of it is a chain of horses, its trainers and the traders.

The Maha-Mantapa contains four open halls within. The south, north and the east ones are still intact. The central western hall is collapsed, probably due to the arson that followed the fall of the capital.

The main highlight of the Maha-Mantapa is its richly carved giant monolithic pillars. The outermost of the pillars are popularly called the musical pillars. These slender and short pilasters carved out of the giant pillars emit musical tones when tapped. Probably these do not belong to any of the standard musical notes, but the musical tone of the vibes earned it’s the name. Unmindful curiosity of the visitors has damaged many of these pilasters and tapping on it is banned for the sake of preservation.

The eastern hall which is called the musicians hall is notable for sculptures of musicians on the pillars. Each of the pillars surrounding this hall is sculptured with musicians, drummers and dancers.

The southern hall is dominated with the rampant mythical creatures called Yalis. The capitals of each of the pillars branches into heavily ornate corbels with terminating with lotus buds.

The northern hall is surrounded with a series of pillars with the Narasimha (the man-lion incarnation of Vishnu) themes. The most notable ones are that of Narasimha slaying Hiranyakashipu on his lap. Prahlada is seen sitting at the base in a praying posture.

Vittala Temple, Hampi

As the epicenter of Hampi's attractions, Vittala Temple is the most extravagant architectural showpiece of Hampi. No amount of words can explain this spectacle. The temple is built in the form of a sprawling campus with compound wall and gateway towers. There are many halls, pavilions and temples located inside this campus.

Vittala, after whom the temple is known, is a form of lord Vishnu. This aspect of Vishnu was worshiped in this part of the country as their cult deity by the cattle herds.

The temple was originally built in the 15th century AD. Many successive kings have enhanced the temple campus during their regimes to the present form. Yon can even see the remains of a township called Vittalapura that existed around this temple complex. The highlight of Vittala temple is its impressive pillared halls and the stone chariot. The halls are carved with an overwhelming array of sculptures on the giant granite pillars. The stone chariot located inside the campus is almost an iconic structure of Hampi.

One typically accesses the campus through the eastern entrance tower, next to which the ticket counter is located. On entering through this massive tower, the first thing draws your attention would be a series of compact platforms along the central axis of the campus. At the end of these platforms stands the Stone Chariot. This is in fact a shrine built in the form of a temple chariot. An image of Garuda (the eagle god) was originally enshrined within its sanctum. Garuda, according to the Hindu mythology, is the vehicle of lord Vishnu. Thus the Garuda shrine facing the temple’s sanctum is symbolic.

It may appear (and sometimes even referred to) as a monolithic structure. In reality this stone shrine was built with many giant granite blocks. The joints are smartly hidden in the carvings and other decorative features that adorn the Stone Chariot. The chariot is built on a rectangular platform of a feet or so high. All around this base platform is carved with mythical battle scenes. Though the chariot is not resting on it, the four giant wheels attached mimic the real life ones complete with the axis shafts & the brakes. A series of concentric floral motifs decorate the wheels. It appears from the marks on the platform, where the wheels rest, the wheels were free to move around the axis.

You can still see the remains of the painting on the carvings of the chariot. Probably because it was relatively protected from the natural wearing elements, the undercarriage of the chariot spots one of the best preserved specimens of this kind of paintings. It is believed the whole of the Vittala Temple’s sculptures were once beautifully painted in similar fashion using the minerals as medium.

In front of the chariot two elephants are positioned as if they are pulling the chariot. In fact these elephants where brought from elsewhere and positioned here at a later stage. Originally two horses were carved in that position. The tails and the rear legs of the horses can be still seen just behind these elephant sculptures. A broken stone ladder once gave access to the sanctum is kept between the elephants. You can still spot the marks on the floor and the doorsill where once the ladder stood.

On leaving the Stone Chariot you reach the main hall in front of the Vittala temple. This hall though partially damaged is still awe inspiring. Facing the Stone Chariot, a series of steps flanged by elephant balustrades gives access to this elevated open hall called the Maha-Mantapa (the great hall). The balustrades on the east and west porch of this hall is more dramatic with giant lion Yalis fighting the relatively dwarf elephants. The Maha-Mantapa stands on a highly ornate platform. This fluted platform is carved with a series of floral motifs. The lowermost of it is a chain of horses, its trainers and the traders.

The Maha-Mantapa contains four open halls within. The south, north and the east ones are still intact. The central western hall is collapsed, probably due to the arson that followed the fall of the capital.

The main highlight of the Maha-Mantapa is its richly carved giant monolithic pillars. The outermost of the pillars are popularly called the musical pillars. These slender and short pilasters carved out of the giant pillars emit musical tones when tapped. Probably these do not belong to any of the standard musical notes, but the musical tone of the vibes earned it’s the name. Unmindful curiosity of the visitors has damaged many of these pilasters and tapping on it is banned for the sake of preservation.

The eastern hall which is called the musicians hall is notable for sculptures of musicians on the pillars. Each of the pillars surrounding this hall is sculptured with musicians, drummers and dancers.

The southern hall is dominated with the rampant mythical creatures called Yalis. The capitals of each of the pillars branches into heavily ornate corbels with terminating with lotus buds.

Four wheel drive and high clearance is helpful negotiating the last half mile to and from the Government Trail trailhead (near a stock pond). There was a rangers' pickup truck parked next to us and they had signed in as "on patrol".

At least another half dozen vehicles were parked up above the four wheel drive section of road.

This was an easy backpacking trip. Only the very short pitch up and down the rim of Grand Gulch gave us a chance to really "test" the merits of our new lightweight internal frame packs.

We had a lot of fun together on this little excursion and there is nothing like sleeping beneath the desert stars in a mile high slickrock canyon, with somebody you love. Fun!

This was a test run for some new lightweight internal frame backpacks, my wife and I had purchased for this trip. After 40 years of using our comfortable, easy to access, Kelty Tioga external frame backpacks, we decided that for “off trail” canyon hiking, that some new light internal frame backpacks might be better suited (and besides I had a 20% off coupon and my 2010 REI refund dividend burning a hole in my jeans pocket at the time).

So I bought an REI Flash 65 and the Flash 50 for my wife. Not only would these work better for the overhangs encountered with off trail canyon hiking, but they stored in our pickup truck almost flat, when not in use.

To get to right to the point: We both LOVED these new packs. I still think we will use our external frames on most occasions when we are hiking a well established trail and balance and narrow low profile is not a consideration. But when we want to go light and have any plans for off trail backpacking, the new internals are here to stay.

You really need four wheel drive and high clearance to get all the way down to the stock pond trailhead for the Government Trail into Grand Gulch. Our old 1994 Toyota pickup truck with high clearance, low and high range “shift on the fly” four wheel drive, and adequate skid plates underneath, was just the ticket. We ended up parking next to a ranger’s pickup truck.

The Government Trail is easy hiking. It is an old Jeep trail so we could hike side by side for the 2.5 miles or so from the stock pond to the Grand Gulch canyon rim. The next half mile is steep in places and there are a couple of overhangs if you happen to have a high backpack. We had no trouble at all getting on down to the bottom of the Grand Gulch canyon. At a leisurely pace it took us an hour from trailhead to rim and half hour from rim to canyon bottom at Grand Gulch.

We hiked up Grand Gulch and took several “side hikes”, the most fun being to the “Big Man” pictograph panel. The stars of the panel are actually a Big Man (with modest male features) and a Big Woman. So why they don’t call it the Big COUPLE panel, I don’t know. Left over and hard to extinguish male chauvinism I guess.

We met a lot of nice people on this road trip and at the bottom of Grand Gulch we met a fit couple with two energetic young girls, camped near the mouth of Polly Canyon. The wife was preparing camp meals (toasted fajitas), that to us, seemed gourmet and outstanding camp cuisine. The next day the man would turn up as our hero of the road trip as the “Good Samaritan”.

Though the weather was good (nice temperatures and no rain), wind gusts hit pretty hard throughout the afternoon and into the evening. We were lucky that the “nice family” told us about an out of the wind camping location under a big bent cottonwood tree. The camping site was perfect for us.

We slept with the rain fly off of our REI Quarter Dome T-3 tent that night and enjoyed watching the big dipper, shooting stars, and a bright moon through the mesh canopy of the tent that night. We really slept well.

5. Friday 22nd of April 2011
We ate breakfast and watched the morning sun illuminate the sandstone canyon walls around us. The wind was gone and it was a perfect day. We took our time hiking down Grand Gulch and then back up to the rim of the canyon. Here we found a lady lying down under a juniper tree and her husband with a large backpack sitting on the slick rock. During our discussion we were told that she had badly sprained her ankle down in Grand Gulch (her husband didn’t tell us how long ago), but they had obviously made it to the rim together, leaving only the easy 2.5 mile “Jeep” road section to hike to the trailhead.

I asked the husband if they had a vehicle at the trailhead or had they had to park up the road above the four wheel drive section. He said they were at the trailhead. He showed no signs of needing our help so we continued on hiking toward our truck. Along the way we passed three backpackers, heading down government trail, and then along came the “Good Samaritan”, without any pack at all hiking down towards us. REI quarter dome T-3 ~ love it

Light; compact; extremely easy and fast to put up and take down; lots of ventilation; stowable tear shaped doors; adequate vestibules with rain fly on; lots of room. A very enjoyable backpacking tent. We highly recommend it for two people backpacking. I use the REI quarter dome T-1 for lightweight solo backpacking.

This was a test run for some new lightweight internal frame backpacks, my wife and I had purchased for this trip. After 40 years of using our comfortable, easy to access, Kelty Tioga external frame backpacks, we decided that for “off trail” canyon hiking, that some new light internal frame backpacks might be better suited (and besides I had a 20% off coupon and my 2010 REI refund dividend burning a hole in my jeans pocket at the time).

So I bought an REI Flash 65 and the Flash 50 for my wife. Not only would these work better for the overhangs encountered with off trail canyon hiking, but they stored in our pickup truck almost flat, when not in use.

To get to right to the point: We both LOVED these new packs. I still think we will use our external frames on most occasions when we are hiking a well established trail and balance and narrow low profile is not a consideration. But when we want to go light and have any plans for off trail backpacking, the new internals are here to stay.

You really need four wheel drive and high clearance to get all the way down to the stock pond trailhead for the Government Trail into Grand Gulch. Our old 1994 Toyota pickup truck with high clearance, low and high range “shift on the fly” four wheel drive, and adequate skid plates underneath, was just the ticket. We ended up parking next to a ranger’s pickup truck.

The Government Trail is easy hiking. It is an old Jeep trail so we could hike side by side for the 2.5 miles or so from the stock pond to the Grand Gulch canyon rim. The next half mile is steep in places and there are a couple of overhangs if you happen to have a high backpack. We had no trouble at all getting on down to the bottom of the Grand Gulch canyon. At a leisurely pace it took us an hour from trailhead to rim and half hour from rim to canyon bottom at Grand Gulch.

We hiked up Grand Gulch and took several “side hikes”, the most fun being to the “Big Man” pictograph panel. The stars of the panel are actually a Big Man (with modest male features) and a Big Woman. So why they don’t call it the Big COUPLE panel, I don’t know. Left over and hard to extinguish male chauvinism I guess.

Turns out that the lady hiker had hurt her ankle a couple of days ago and the Good Samaritan had decided to help them out a bit. He had hiked to the rim, took their vehicle keys, and carried her backpack all the way to the trailhead. There he had loaded

5080 - Teddy Bears in Bondage

Honestly I was totally at a loss for words when I came across this scene ... on a nearby concrete slab there was a beat up Tex figure (from Toy Story) and a field of toy vehicles all arranged semi neatly but in myriad sizes and various states of disrepair - everything from cast metal airplanes to little bicycles minus wheels to Hot Wheels cars and more...very strange - almost like an offering to the gods of play and childhood leisure.

Kodi got a new wheel

His silent spinner died, for some reason it won't spin anymore.
Besides, it WAS a little small for Kodi, who is a pretty big ham.
So I got him a Karlie Wonderland wheel, the rat sized one.
It's so silent, woah.
