Me driving round Bedford autodrome in our track car. Its a Jetta with a 2.0 16V engine from the MK3 Golf was the std engine output of 150 BHP. Still went very well round the track suprising a few people. A guy with an E36 M3 even came up to me to ask what was in it as he did not seem to be pulling away from me round the track.

Enough power to have fun but not too much as to rip the tyres up in all a nippy car that loved to rev.

This is a fantastic and highly collectible dinky supertoy from the 1950s. It is model No. 923, with the Heinz 57 Varieties Baked Beans decal. This toy is 100% original and comes with all the original (working) parts, including the original four tires, plus the fifth spare, the yellow hubcaps, and two working rear doors. The tires are showing "flats" which is typical for a dinky of this age. Also the paint is showing signs of wear and age, this was obviously a played with toy.

Also in the photo: my winter beater Chevrolet S10 Blazer. That little truck was awesome, it had the 4.3 liter V6, manual shift 4wd and best of all it was a 5-speed! I acquired the red Mercury Topaz for the demolition derby "Enduro Races" at Star Speedway but ended up junking it and racing a Ford Probe instead.

Those were the days, a beat up car that needed tires or perhaps it was missing a title could be had for FREE if you made enough phone calls.

FLEA

The FLEA is a unmanned robotic transport, designed to exploit any pre-existing network of railroad tracks on terrestrial planets.

Its front wheels have independent suspension to help steering and high-speed cornering, as well as having adjustable widths to fit any type of track.

A single rear wheel provides the primary source of locomotion, which simplifies not only operation, but maintenance as it is easily replaced by cheap motorcycle tyres.

The FLEA gets its name from its long telemetry antennas, as well as a powerful set of hydraulic pistons mounted on the rear swing-arm. These pistons allow the FLEA to perform short leaps off the tracks onto adjacent tracks, or over slower trains which are using the same railway track.

Valgan Chambord rear Tire Saver

This is how I mounted the rear fender and simple old Tire Saver. Not the neatest configuration but I wanted to get it set up quickly and had these parts on hand... think I'll get back and maybe get some netter parts fitted into that bolt assembly.

I love stainless steel... from right to left is a stainless steel Nylock nut, stainless steel flat washer, the basic vintage wire Tire Saver, an alloy concave washer ( typically used for supporting a brake caliper on a rear brake bridge), then on the other side of the chainstay bridge is a nylon spacer (simply used here to center the fender around the tire) and finally the cheap plastic fender with a long (and very flat headed) bolt passing through everything.

1980 Gilles Berthoud

Purchased as a frameset on eBay (France) in September 2007 for $225. Back on the road 11 November.

An early and somewhat rare pure racing machine from French framebuilder Gilles Berthoud, better known for his randonneur machines.

In outfitting the frame, the aim was to achieve a wholly French constructeur top-class racing machine in manufacture, materials and period correct components featuring the lightest French-made components of the era by Huret and the Spidel group which brought together the great French component makers Simplex, Stronglight, Mafac and Maillard.

The Ride

I hate to nominate favourites of my collection, but hands down, this is the best riding and handling of the bunch! The ideal racing bike, light (20 lbs), nimble but predictable handling, and ideal geometry... this is one of those perfect from the first ride machines. High build quality (I really like the simple, clean lines and the nicely filed and chromed lugs) and those superb late 70s early 80s French components make this a simply superb addition to the collection.

Raleigh Wiltshire Police Issue roadster

It was one of a special order of three machines ordered by Wiltshire Police in 1979 for use by Local Beat Officers.

It is an unusual and extremely high specification for the late '70's being equipped with chromed rod or roller brakes and extra tough Westrick steel wheel rims carrying heavy duty tyres. It is almost as if Raleigh kept back some high quality '50's machines for special orders because this is better made than say a late 70's Superbe, which was always the best of the traditionally styled bikes available!

This particular bike was recently featured on the series 'Bad Lad's Army and was ridden around the parade ground by one of the sergeants although I'm not sure which episode or indeed which series!

The componentry is certainly very high compared to other Raleigh machines of the same era. The decals, chain wheels and cranks are higher quality than what you'd usually find on a 3 speed Raleigh from the late '70's so it does look like these were specifically ordered to be high quality machines with a long service life.

It is equipped with a fully operational and very bright Sturmey Archer lighting set with the switch on top of the headlamp which is powered by a hub dynamo which is incorporated into the rear hub alongside the three speed gearbox. This Sturmey Archer unit was called the 'AG', the 'A' indicating a three speed unit, and the 'G' standing for 'generator'.
The bicycle has a Brooks vinyl covered mattress saddle which is exceptionally comfortable and a robust rear spring clamp parcel.

Overall the machine is in very good condition; Paint is good. It's a very nicely applied medium metallic green which is extremely elegant and has some rather fancy coach line water-slide transfers on the seat tube a bit like the range topping Raleigh Record Ace so continuing the up-market theme.

This is a bike I built for Bicycling Magazine. It is in the December issue which is out right now. This bike is for sale as a frameset, or built up as is with the rare limited Tour de France Sram Red Group, Rolf Elan wheels with custom blue graphics, 3T LTD stem,bars, and post. I can also build it up with whatever components you can dream of. The 72.5 degree seat tube is 54 cm c-t and it has a 55 cm top tube c-c. the head tube is 73 degrees with the fork raked to 43 mm. If you want more geometry info just e-mail me. The downtube is Columbus Spirit for lugs, the seat tube is a Custom Columbus tube that tapers from 28.6 at the seat cluster to 31.7 at the BB shell to stiffen up the drive train. The top tube and headtube are True Temper OX Plat with True Temper fork blades. The rear triangle is KVA MS2 stainless steel brushed with polished stainless drop outs. The fork crown and front drop outs are also polished stainless steel. The top of the line paint was done by Bryan at fresh frame which you really have to see in person to really appreciate. Finally Installed the Pirelli Rally Tire On The Front Of The KTM

I put 36 PSI in the front, it doesn't work over 55 MPH on paved roads as the front developed a bad high speed wobble, if you can call 55 MPH high speed

Lowering the air pressure in the front to 28 PSI and the wobble was gone. FWIW, while riding it on the interstate before letting air pressure out of it, I found if I rode one handed, the wobbl;e wasn't there

I've expereinced this phenoma before with flaky front ends on bikes where maybe the front needs nmore pre-load to settle down a wobble...but if I kept both hands on the handle bar, my body would act like a sail so I lesson the grip on the right hand and leave the left hand off the handle bar compleltely and the problem is solved

Of course, with this bike, running more of a tasrmac friendly tread and no wobble. though this tire is a DOT knobbie, it wasn't designed for slab touring

SO, about my upload! This cover is the totalz shitz -.- Yes it’s supposed to be a cover. I’m working on the thread right now (right now as in tomorrow), but I’m finding it difficult to explain the damn thing, without giving the whole story away. BAHH! I want it to be mysterious and spooky, but it comes out totally stupid and retarded when I try to tell people about it -__- *sigh*
Also, that guy’s hair (I’m not giving up the name just yet) ruins the whole thing. Was he electrocuted or something?

Back at the hotel, after dinner, we were too tired to go out.

So Clare, Alex, Andrew and I sat around in Alex and Clare's room and talked religion, politics, and also explained to Andrew some of the birds and the bees that somehow he had never learned.

Dinner was served in the hotel restaurant, and consisted of three courses. A salad, which was really just cubes of ham and cheese with dressing and a couple of incidental lettuce leaves (tasty all the same). Then a leg of chicken in a tasty orange or lemon sauce with haricots vertes (green beans, which I think are the french national vegetable or something, but that's okay, I love 'em.). Along with that there was one medium-sized, well cooked tomato that had a bunch of seasonings on top, and was hot and gooshy and soooooo good. Then we had some sort of apple tart thing for dessert, I think, but I don't really remember. All accompanied by a rather mediocre glass of red wine.

I enjoyed this funky mirror in the room.

January 5, 1998: After finishing all my work at the last minute yesterday (trying to meet Camara at the DRAP, seeing Oumar about Self-Help, talking to Cheikh, changing money, meeting with Dr. Cherif...) I had planned to leave first thing this morning for Dakar. No such luck. This is a week of waiting. The Bureau did not have my green card (“Carte d’Etranger”) renewed early this morning, like they said they would. I waited around impatiently until about 11:30 when I finally got it. I left for the Rosso taxi garage at once.
More waiting. The first taxi I waited in never left, so I was transferred to another one, in which I waited some more. Finally at about 1:45, we rolled out of the place. Aside from myself, there were only 4 other people in the car, which was not too run down. A relatively smooth and easy trip to Rosso (only one flat tire and mild comments about my lack of religion.)

Day 303 - all jacked up and tired out

How often do you pay attention to the tread on your tires? Yes, the Shell Answer Man told us years ago what to look for and how often, but do we do it?

Knowing that it had to be time for a change, but never quite getting around to actually looking at my tires, I went down to Les Schwab to get some new donuts on my wagon. And good timing it was, since when I showed the happy-dappy guy there my tires so he could get the model number down that's when I actually looked at (and felt) one of my tires -- and the tread was scarcely there. I have rubberstamps with more footprint than what I drive 90 miles a day on.

So about $350 and an hour later, I now grip the road and will do so for at least another fifty thousand miles.

How wrong can you be?
The rear axle needed replacement. Try finding a 5/16th axle around 150mm long.
Try finding a half link for a 1/8th chain....
But, after all the hassle it's a great little bike of its type.
12 1/2" wheels! Tyres look like wheelbarrow pattern, but the Raleigh chrome is 100% and it 'works!'
