LSD 3 wheeler car Tolson Museum Huddersfield Yorkshire Claimed to be Britain's rarest car - the three-wheeled LSD - which was manufactured in Huddersfield between 1919 and 1924. It was originally made by Sykes and Sugden Ltd from 1919 to 1923 and then by the LSD Motor Co Ltd in Mirfield from 1923 to 1924. The name of the car was derived from the initials of the designer (Longbottom), the manufacturer (Sykes) and their accountant (Dyson). There were three models, the Family, the Popular and the Standard plus three-hundredweight and four-hundredweight van versions. The engine was an air cooled eight horsepower v-twin Jap or Mag. Chance Simon There have been way too many things that could have gone wrong recently, things that if chance had been against us, could have ended our circumnavigation adventure. We've had to grapple with the beurocrats to get the last of our visas, get a replacement for my broken frame and I had to cycle while trying not to cause further harm to my legs, having crashed a few weeks ago. I managed to get my Iran visa pretty swiftly though, and did the initial part of the appliation for the Turkmenistan transit visa, so with that all sorted, I hopped on my damaged bike and pedalled with my swollen legs towards the fabled silk road city of Samarquand. Each time I bent my knee at the top of the pedal stroke, I would get a pain in my quad muscles which made the cycle a cumbersome affair. Normally in such circumstances, I would put ice on the swelling. Of course I had no ice packs, but nature provided suitable cold, with the air temperature dropping down to around -3 degrees C or so. The weather wasn't great for my bike though, as on a pretty miserable rainy day, some water had managed to get into the bearings of my bottom bracket (the bit that allows the cranks to spin), and each time I stopped, the water would turn to solid ice which prevented the cranks from spinning. I had to stamp on the pedals to break up the ice and get the whole lot moving again. The water thrown up from my wheel also froze around the front chainrings and dereilleur which left me only able to use my big chainring, making the climbs a slow grind and putting even more strain on my knees. I arrived in Samarquand after an unplanned 165km days cycling, in the freezing rain, at night, and with the roads beginning to resemble an ice rink. By then my new frame had been sprayed by KTM in Austria, which was then routed to Damian from Freewheel, where he popped in a lovely new Catlike helmet for me, my last lid being cracked after smashing my head off the road. The whole package was then FedEXed to Tashkent for me to collect when I returned to pick up my Turkmen visa. I was told the package would arrive on the 18th, but with my Uzbek visa expiring on the 22nd, I only had four days to get back to Samarquand, reassemble my entire bike and cycle the 350km to the border. It was very tight! I met up with Fearghal in Tashkent where we both waited apprehensively outside the unnecessarily large and opulant Turkmenistan embassy. Fearghal had been up at 5 to put our name on the queuing list, which you would think is supposed to give some order to the proceedings. It didn't though as the guard first let in his mates and the people who shouted the loudest and pushed the hardest. Eventually though, after 3 hours of waiting, we got in. I got a fright when a Japanese guy who was in front of us was told to come back in a week, his visa wasn't ready. If that happened to us, we'd be truely stuck, as both our Uzbek visas would have expired by then. Luckily though, both of us got the required permission slips that had been approved by the ministry in Asgabat and we walked out with the last of our visas in our hands, we were both elated!! A serious celebratory piss-up followed, drinking a bottle of Champagnski and a litre of local vodka between us. We're both absolute lightweights these days when it comes to drinking and so it was a loud, short and very messy affair indeed! The good fortuned continued and my frame arrived in Tashkent on time, so I jumped on the first train back to Samarquand, put my bike together and headed off towards the border. It was a very boring cycle, the road was flat, the weather was grey and murkey, and the scenery was dull and monotonous. I enjoyed the last of the Uzek hospitality though, each night staying overnight in the restaurant where I had eaten, and in some cases not being allowed to pay for my food. The problem with staying in a restaurant though, is you need to wait until all the clients leave, and many of them enjoy the vodka too much. One local insisted that I drink some vodka with him and despite the resistance from my stomach that was still very objectionable to alcohol after the aforementioned drinking session, I managed to down a couple of big shots. It was only after hiding my cup in my handlebar bag and by feigning nausea, that the guy stopped trying to ply me with booze. I made it to the border on the 22nd with my legs feeling much better, a new frame on my bike and the last of the visas in my passport. Chance was with us and everything had gone according to plan, I just hope our luck continues. 1919 Johnson Motor Wheel The Johnson Motor Wheel was designed in 1914 by Louis Johnson. It was patented in the USA in 1919 and in the UK in 1920.[1] The initial design had problems at high speeds, so a fellow inventor from Indiana, Dick Oglesby, offered his magnetos to the Johnsons in order to address the problem.[2] The Johnson brothers moved to South Bend, Indiana and formed the Johnson Brothers Motor Wheel Company to manufacture the kits. The Motor Wheel had a 2 cycle engine which produced 1HP and had two flywheel magnetos, bronze bearings and a float feed carburetor. The complete kit came with a wheel, hub tire, shock-absorbing spring sprocket holder, wheel sprocket and chain, handlebar controls for choke, throttle and engine shutoff, three quart gas tank and gas line, and all necessary fittings to adapt the engine and rear wheel unit to any 26" bicycle. Trucking Down the I-5 Four and a half hours of this. Catherine made short work of it going home. The speedometer marks 84 mph. The Golden State highway it's called and it's the truck artery running down the length of California. When I see several trucks together like this it makes me see how hard the trucking industry had to lobby to keep rail from dominating the shipping industry. All this shipping could so obviously go by rail. It's just one long straight shot from one end of the state to the other. We await the high speed rail between SF and LA much talked about for years, is being discussed seriously again. Also mind bending is that this is agricultural land in the desert. Water rights between the cities and agriculture are fierce in California. All along we saw signs saying "Congress created dust bowl" or "water feeds the nation". Not sure what those politics are about. The farm bill maybe? Truck Christening Here is my new truck, which looks almost exactly like my old truck. Sadly, my old truck was lost in an accident recently. Another driver struck the old truck hard and fast while I was making a left turn, knocking the truck out of alignment and causing lots of damage. My insurance company totaled the truck, a white 1992 Ford Ranger Custom. Thanks to CraigsList, I found this 1990 Ford Ranger Custom. Now blue, it was white. Its gas gauge does not work, like the old truck. My dad transferred the old camper shell. It's just like the old one, except with a tape deck instead of a simple radio, a full bed liner and a CB radio (still nonfunctioning). And it cost less than the insurance settlement! I have decided to launch a campaign to ensure that the "Belfast Wheel" does not fall foul of planners who have lodged an objection to a request to operate the attraction at it's current location for an additional period of time It would appear that other sites are to be considered by the operators. As the brains behind this endeavour, I'd naturally love to attend the gathering, however the lack of a dual carriageway or motorway between Derry/Londonderry and Belfast means that the journey takes considerably more time than perhaps it should. Therefore I couldn't be arsed. Can I however suggest that the first to arrive, pop up the street to Matchetts Music and see if it's possible to hire a sound system. This should be located in front of City Hall and the chosen one should proceed to shout all sorts of pro campaign slogans such as. "Move the wheel - No deal" or "It's a sin - Don't stop the spin" or any other chant that you feel fits the bill. Please take plenty of photos because I have a feeling that this could get the peson lucky enough to arrive first plenty of publicity. Episcopal Church of St. Luke & St. Matthew Clinton Avenue, Clinton Hill, Brooklyn In the last decades of the 19th century the city of Brooklyn developed into one of the largest and wealthiest urban centers in the United States. The affluence of the city was reflected in the size and quality of the buildings erected in its residential neighborhoods during the last quarter of the century. Substantial mansions and rowhouses were erected throughout Brooklyn, but even more important as symbols of the city's established success were grand public monuments such as clubs, schools, philanthropic and cultural institutions, and, most importantly, churches. St. Luke's Protestant Episcopal Church, built in 1888-91 on Clinton Avenue, one of Brooklyn's most elite thoroughfares, is among the largest and finest of the ecclesiastical structures built in the city during the 19th century, and, like the other major buildings from the period, it reflects a sense of optimism in Brooklyn's future. One of the more unusual features of St. Luke's is the use of six carefully modulated masterial on the. facade, These varieties of rough and smooth stone and terra cotta serve to create a subtle drama on the building. The church has a soft grayish cast enlivened by stone details in brown and white and ornate gray terra cotta. Splashes of brighter color mark the entrances to both the church building and the chapel and Sunday school structure. These entrances are flanked by columns of pale reddish Scotch granite. The twin columns that support the round corner towers of the main church were said to have been the largest blocks of Scotch granite ever imported into this country,^ The first phase of construction, dating from 1888 to 1889, included the chapel and Sunday school building paid for by Colonel Martin and the two-story cloister that links the church and chapel. This section was financed by the. congregation of St, Luke's. The chapel is a two-story, peaked-roof structure anchored by a tall square tower with a pyramidal roof. The building is entered through a recessed, triple-arched porch supported by columns of Scotch granite. The carved capitals of the central columns are in the form of female heads that are supposed to be. portrait busts of Col. Martin's deceased daughter. These capitals are carved of light-colored stone-and are the focal point of the entrance porch. Recessed behind the porch is the entrance to the building with its paneled double doors and pairs of stained-glass windows. Above the porch are three tall, narrow, round-arched windows separated by attenuated colonnettes with capitals carved with religious symbols. A round-arched corbelled cornice that culminates ir- a niche once capped by a cross runs along the roofline of the building. Welch's original plan, called for a series of small round-arched windows ir this area rather than the blind arches now present. These windows were undoubtedly removed from the plans when Welch was requested to simplify the design. The beautifully modeled tower of the chapel is based on the campanile bell towers found on Italian Romanesque churches, and it is a sophisticated essay it; the use of round arches. Excluding the roof, the ivy-covered tower is divided into four levels; a battered base with a single round-arched opening; a tall second level articulated by long narrow arches J a short intermediate stage that rises above the roof of the chapel and if? surrounded by a continuous arcade of tiny arches resting on dwarf columns; and an open belfry with paired arches on each face. A corbelled cornice above the open arches supports the steep sloping roof. The chapel is connected to the main sanctuary by a two-story cloister. On its first floor level, this cloister is supported by an arcade of four arches, two of which are open and lead to an entrance and two of which are enclosed. This arcade continues the line of the arched chapel entrance and visually links it to the entrance portico of the church. The second floor of this connecting element is rigidly symmetrical, with a pair of centrally-placed rectangular windows enframed by narrow colonnettes of white-colored stone. This group of windows is flanked by crisply-cut rectangular openings. A particularly deep corbelled cornice runs along the roofline of the cloister. Welch's original design called for a small gable with a wheel window in the center of the cloister, This gable would have echoed the form of the hapel and church roofs and added a further visual link between the two sections. Undoubtedly the gable was removed from the plans when the vestry requested that Welch lower the construction costs. In 1889 construction began of the main church. When it was completed in 1891, Clinton Avenue was graced by one of New York City's finest ecclesiastical monuments. The sanctuary is entered through an impressive projecting round-arched portal supported by clustered columns of Scotch granite.
