High Wycombe Old Station

High Wycombe Old Station

The original 1854 Wycombe Railway station building at High Wycombe. Designed by I.K. Brunel, it only served as a passenger station for six years because in 1862 the line was extended to Thame and a replacemet station was constructed on a different alignment. The old station was converted into a goods shed and over the years had various extensions added to it. These have now been demolished except for the ugly additional first floor which still awaits removal. The building will now be renovated for retail use. 21st May 2011.

High Wycombe Bus Station 2002

High Wycombe Bus Station 2002

Seen here in August 2002 is the entrance to the old High Wycombe Bus Station which was a dark and dingy affair but was unusual in having garaging facilities which served as the Wycombe Bus Company parking before being taken over by Arriva in 2000. Note also the old style Tesco signing. This scene has now all been swept away with the redevelopment of this part of High Wycombe into the Eden Centre. Seen here is Leyland National Greenway CAZ 6852 with Leyland Olympian / Northern Counties G131 YWC behind.

2012 AEC rally and celebrations here I come

2012 AEC rally and celebrations here I come

After a long period of inactivity, 2011 has at last seen some progress in the restoration of this 1971 A.E.C. Mandator tractor unit ,which I have owned for a number of years. New to a Lincolnshire general haulage company it passed when relatively young to Abbotts Coaches from Blackpool. They removed the 5th wheel coupling and fitted a platform body with concrete ballast weights and added a towing hitch to the rear. It went on to serve the company as a towing vehicle until the closure of the business. It was sold to a dealer at the disposal auction. I bought it from him and took it to an AEC rally in "as purchased" condition. Whilst the cab was complete and functional it had been patched-up many times during its life and would have required a substantial rebuild to make it right. I decided to return it to a tractor unit format and replace the cab. I was lucky enough to source an ex-RAF aircraft refueled cab at a very reasonable price and restoration work began. The chassis was shot- blasted and painted, a replacement 5th wheel, new rear mudguards , a new lower front panel and a good set of 10.00x20 tyres were fitted .The replacement cab was added and repaired where required. The roof was not the best so a Hatcher fibreglass sheet rack/illuminated signboard was fitted to hide the metal repairs. That was as far as the restoration got before it was sidelined due to other things happening in my life and subsequent purchases absorbing available funds! Elsewhere on my photostream the results of prolonged outdoor storage are illustrated from the day when I finally dragged the lorry out of the bushes ready to re-start its restoration. I negotiated special dispensation at Reliance Bus Works for the admission of a lorry into this bus and coach-mending business and it was accepted on the basis of being an AEC only!! In reality the proprietor, Martyn Hearson could not really say no because he had been the voice that had kept telling me to " do something about that Mandator" and what little amount of work would be needed to finish it off!! So I duly towed the lorry to his yard and said I don't want it back until it is finished, the deadline is in good time to be able to attend the 2012 AEC rally.
This image was taken just prior to my departure overseas for a number of months and shows the (slow) progress so far. Work has concentrated on further repairs to the cab including door restoration and fitting genuine rear lamp brackets with correct style light units. I have supplied various new and secondhand parts that will be required as work progresses. A workshop extension at RBW will allow the Mandator to be kept inside, hopefully before Winter sets-in and I am promised that its restoration will be able to be accelerated accordingly. The lorry will be finished in a livery which will reflect the livery used by my family's removals business from 1968 when it was considerably "modernized".

Joyland Truck SC

Joyland Truck SC

In the south part of Wichita. Stands an old Amusement park. Joyland is it's name.
When I was a kid, we went there every summer. We got a certain number of tickets for every A, B, or C on our end of school report cards.
We rode the "Scrambler", the haunted house ride called "The Wacky Shack". We rode the bumper cars and the "Zipper". The "tilt-a-whirl" and "The Paratrooper". There was the train ride and of course all the games at the penny arcade that always cost more than a penny.
If we were REALLY brave, we rode the "Roller-Coaster". You know, some guy got killed on that thing! Sure! Maryann's sister's best friend Margret knew this girl that knew this guy that was a second cousin of this guy that knew the guy that stood up and... well, it was just too awful to tell about!
We rode the rides, ate cotton candy and corn dogs. We drank big tall paper cups of coke. We ran around and rode the "Ferris wheel" and the "Kiddie car" until our mom's said it was time to go home.
Years later, we took our kids to Joyland. We walked around from ride to ride and watched our children do just what we had done. We talked not of school and Janet's goofy curls, but of work and houses to buy and mortgages to pay and kids to raise.
And you know, a funny thing happened. We noticed, Joyland was A LOT smaller than we remembered. We had out grown the rides and the penny arcade and we had fallen in love with Janet's curls and asked those girls on dates, then more dates and then marriage. We had grown up. We still had Joyland, we still went, but we were the Moms and the Dads.
Now, we had out lived Joyland. People got tired of the little park that seemed so big to a youngster. We had been to bigger parks. Prettier parks, more sophisticated. Parks that cover square miles and have their own hotels.
Now Joyland sets empty. No more laughter or the sweet smell of corn dogs in the air.
I was sad as I walked around outside the locked gate. All I could hear was the occasional car pass by and maybe, just maybe... a left over scream of joy on the midway.

200-365: Kibble Run

200-365: Kibble Run

Today was a long day at work. And I was only there from 7:30 until 11:00. Everything that got put on hold last week was a top priority. Oh, one coworker is on vacation and another got banished to sales training. It's going to be a rough week.

After that, I went to see my primary care doc. Some of my old back problems are returning. He's going to have an MRI before we do anything else. That makes sense. And I have a cyst that I want to have removed. He says its benign. It still freaks me out.

Then I went to the infusion unit for my second dose of Tysabri. It was pretty uneventful.

I came home and found my new debit card in the mail. Switching banks is a pain in the ass, and I didn't quite do things in the proper order. The account from my old bank had a functional debit card but not a whole lot of funds in the account. The account from the new bank had the funds but not a debit card. That has since been resolved. That means I had a little bit of shopping to do. Reggie needed kibble!

Ever since I've had Reggie, I've kept him on the same kibble as Buddy and Brutus. It makes visits and babysitting a hell of a lot easier when everybody eats the same kibble. Beth had recently changed the kibble her boys are on, so we made the switch while Reggie was staying at their house. I had snagged a little bit of the new kibble from Paul when I left their house yesterday, but it wouldn't get me much past tonight. That's been sorted, now, too.

I'm really tired, but I should be cleaning the house. My whole family is coming to visit this weekend. They're all staying in Boston, but they'll be coming up here at some point, so I at least need to have the house looking somewhat decent.

I got new tires today at Wesco Track & Tire in Van Nuys. I've been going to Wesco since early '80s when they were the only shop in SoCal to carry Phoenix Stahlflex 3011, the hottest street performance tire at the time....and 3011s were what I HAD to have. As it turned out, I befriended the owner, Ed, and then ended up doing the graphic design for Wesco's mail-order advertising. And also doing 70-mile bicycle rides in the Santa Monica Mtns on Saturdays with him and his buddies. Ed was a great guy, and a mentor in many ways. I'm still friends with his son John, who now owns the shop. Years ago, before we had families to tend to, John and I played a lot of racquetball and did some mountain biking in Cheseboro Cyn. Hadn't seen him in a while, so it was good to chat with him today.

Back then, in the '80s, I was REALLY into tires and wheels, and still today it's a thrill to be surrounded by hundreds of each. I wandered around the shop and big warehouse area with camera in hand as I waited for my car to get new shoes. Here is one shot. More to come.

The Australian humiliation-Australia vs England T20 The Rose Bowl Southampton 2005

The Australian humiliation-Australia vs England T20 The Rose Bowl Southampton 2005

Only time will tell whether the heady fare that was witnessed at the Rose Bowl on Monday night was a performance out of the ordinary from a pumped-up England, or a fatal flaw in the seemingly endless allure of Twenty20 cricket - the fact that one early breakthrough in the pursuit of a stiff total might cause even the best batting line-ups in the world to crumble in the face of an Eiger-like run-rate.

One thing is for certain though. Ignore February's farce between Australia and New Zealand: Monday evening's three-hour Ashes hors d'oeuvre was the first bone fide Twenty20 international, but it will not be the last. The appeal of the format is simply too great, as evidenced by the full houses that turned up for the triumphant domestic competitions in Pakistan and South Africa, two countries who would die for the level of support that an ordinary county match attracts. Last night's tussle might just have brought the prospect of a Twenty20 World Cup one step closer.

That's if it is not in the pipeline already, mind you, for every stakeholder in the game is currently scrapping over the possibilities that Twenty20 cricket has awakened them to. On Monday morning, The Times served notice of the challenges to the established order, when it revealed that two new competitions were being set up to milk the Twenty20 cash-cow.

The first, an over-35s "classic" tournament in Bermuda, was of little consequence. The second, however - a mooted Champions League for the various domestic Twenty20 champions around the world - prised open a whole new range of possibilities, not least the chance that a club like Surrey, that has taken Twenty20 cricket seriously from the very earliest days, could attract a global following as it attempted to beat off competition from the likes of South Africa, Pakistan and, after last night's drubbing awoke them to the challenge, Australia too. Cricket needs to tend to its grassroots, so what better way to do so than broaden their horizons.

Of course, Twenty20 has to be managed carefully, and the ECB has given an understandably cautious reaction to the prospect of a four-way mini-tournament between Sussex, Essex, Glamorgan and Derbyshire - the four counties who have had the foresight to install permanent floodlights at their grounds, and so now understandably view this as an opportunity to reap the benefits of their investment. Cricket is after all a business, even more so now that the counties have been persuaded to put aside their self-interest and buy into the ECB's new blueprint for the future of the game. And after all the talk of attracting a new generation to the game, what happened last night was the best damn publicity that any new initiative could have hoped for.

Everyone who has a say on Twenty20 cricket has a love of the game, but currently that game is being torn between those who fear that the shortened form is a cuckoo, that will push frail old Test cricket out of the nest, and those who believe that the game is precisely the new blood needed. The figures don't lie. A packed house at The Rose Bowl, phenomenal interest among those that do not traditionally put aside much time for cricket, and perhaps most pertinently of all, back-page deification in the tabloids. Love them or hate them, the red tops remain the barometer of public opinion, and on this evidence, Twenty20 is what the people want.

"Thrashes!" screamed The Sun, a paper that can usually find some football-transfer rumour to relegate cricket to the inside pages. Not on this occasion. "Are they Bangladesh in disguise?" was the next question. This result has fired the imagination, and you can bet your life that some ten years down the line, a future England cricketer will refer to this day as the day the game grabbed him for life.

Cricket can be notoriously patriarchal at times, and so the gravest fear of Twenty20 cricket is the precedent that it sets to the "Instant Gratification" generation - those who have been brought up on fast food and text-messaging, and simply do not know how to sit still for one over, let alone five days.

That, however, is precisely the point. Cricket has discovered a means to attract these tearaways. And if, come July 21, the Ashes Tests prove to be anything like as competitive as they ought to be, then at least some of them will discover quite what a magnificent show a full five-day Test can be. What comes around goes around, and it could even be that kids of tomorrow will tire of their parents' endless channel-surfing, and will want take more stock of their surroundings.

Until that happens, however, the game must keep alive its link between the last generation and the next. The here and now of the game is what counts, because the one thing cricket cannot afford to do is die wondering.

Yeah, I'm lazy with names. I'm tired. This was the first time I'd heard the band, let alone seen them. Someone else can research names, if they like.

Oh, and I'm aware that this is a pretty ordinary photo. For some reason I couldn't make a good photo of these two. Maybe my mojo ran out before I reached that side of stage ... maybe if the big guy was behind the little guy to aid perspective ... maybe if i was a better photographer.

Sorry, guys, maybe it'll work better next time.

Heave on - to Euston
Do you think you've made
The right decision this time?

Your tired family grieving
And you think they're sad because you're leaving
But did you see the jealousy in the eyes
Of the ones who had to stay behind ?
And do you think you've made
The right decision this time ?

Your girlfriend on the platform
With this really ragged notion that you'll return
But she knows
That when he goes
He really goes
And do you think you've made

I have to admit I had no idea Costco existed in the UK, I thought it was a USA only thing... Which sort of is one of the few examples where you can say sure MK, like a US city (which it in in no way shape or well, frankly form, even with its grid) -- but Costco is also in Watford and Bristol I have found, and they're definitely not American-like towns!

Anyway, the building reminded me somewhat of those airstream caravans.

SCUDERIA FOSKERS CFX CONCOURSE D'ELEGANCE JULY 2010

SCUDERIA FOSKERS CFX CONCOURSE D'ELEGANCE JULY 2010

SCUDERIA LAMBRETTA?
Many vehicles were known to be used by The Ferrari Factory for local deliveries and collections. It is common knowledge that the factory owned 2 x Vespa Ape vehicles (scooter related pick up trucks still an everyday site in Italy today).

It was therefore considered that due to the markings this Lambretta could be one of those delivery machines. Scooters of under a certain cubic capacity required no registration documents or insurance therefore making it very difficult to trace histories etc. You simply bought it and hopped on. This is partly why the machines were so popular in Italy during the 1950's and 60's. The design brief was simple - create a machine that would allow people to carry out everyday tasks from shopping to work travel with some weather protection.

We do know is that this 1954 Lambretta LD 125cc was transported to the UK from the Modena area. We also know it was dry stored in a barn for sometime. I still find straw sticking out from hidden areas to this day. The chrome flourishes on the mudguard and side panels were possibly added during the late 1960's. The original paint has been worn through and some isolated repairs to paintwork have been made but these too have worn through in some areas with age. Earlier scooters also never required speedometers or the wearing of crash helmets.

Not being too concerned about the scooter's history dramatically changed last year at The Goodwood Revival, talking to a very smart older gentleman sat next to me drinking a cup of tea from a firmos flask.

He first commented of my Lambretta t shirt saying he had owned and ridden many throughout Europe during the 50's and 60's and had even travelled from Dover to Monte Carlo without the "old girl missing a beat". He told me he preferred Lambrettas to Vespas as the weight distribution was much better and therefore handling was improved. Motorcycles, he said, were too impractical you couldn’t carry anything or wear a suit, they were too dirty.

I then told him about my 1954 unrestored example and the fact it had scrappy stenciled Ferrari markings. His reply astonished me. He told me that the Scuderia had 2 old Lambrettas they used to use during race meetings. They would be strapped to the transporter under tarpaulin or (believe it or not) jammed between the cars. They were often seen buzzing about transporting mechanics or drivers about their daily business and often left laying on the grass or leaning against a Transporter during the race. They were dirty, damaged and treated like work horses. He continued they were either white or grey but (most important of all to me) they had 2 seperate saddles instead of one long seat. By the time he saw them they would have been already 10 years old and Lambretta had began to install the longer more comfortable seats.

Bent areas on the legshields could be explained by the strapping or jamming between cars. Wouldn't it be mad to imagine this wedged up to a 250 GTO?

Having now researched this I cannot find any evidence whatsoever to back the story up apart from some early pictures do show tarpaulins on the rear of the transporter. What lies beneath them remains a mystery.

We also know that the team would have required some type of handy, simple transportation for shifting people, tyres etc. The age and original location of the scooter certainly do fit into the story. The twin saddles also a detail.

The final thing the old gent told me before he slipped off to buy a cigar was that he remembered watching a slightly merry Ludovico Scarfiotti piloting one of the Lambrettas with Enzo Ferrari laughing loudly refusing his kind offer of a pillion. He did momentarily sit on the rear of the bike then got off before Scarfiotti was able to engage first gear.

Whether it is this Lambretta or if the Scuderia Lambrettas ever existed is proving very hard to establish. However it's a great story that I hope one day is backed up by solid evidence.

If anyone has further information please contact me on 07860 384090.
