New Ball Head

New Ball Head

My new toys arrived today. I was sick of using the Manfrotto Modo tripod (recommended to me by someone in the know...) as it's as good as a chocolate teapot.

This baby on the other hand, is something different altogether. The legs adjust to any angle required with the smooth quick release mechanism, the ball head is rated to 4.5kg, easily taking the bigma and e620 with peace of mind. Two of the 3 legs are foam coated for carrying over the shoulder, and after 2 hours of sitting in the garden photographing sparrows, I can safely say that this tripod and head combo are immense. ?45 well spent. Avoid the cheap manfrottos at this price, invest in something decent!

Cartoni HiDV1 Video Tripod System with HiDV Fluid Head, 75mm Ball Base, Supports 11.0 lbs

The Cartoni HiDV1 video tripod system consists of the HiDV fluid head, single-stage aluminum alloy tripod, mid-level spreader, rubber feet, and a soft case. HiDV Fluid Head The capable yet compact HiDV fluid head was designed specifically for use with compact high definition Mini-DV camcorders. Being physically small, yet recording much more detail created the need for an appropriately scaled fluid head which would provide smooth, jitter-free movements to simulate the inertial profile of larger, heavier cameras on larger heads. In addition, the HiDV has every other convenience one would expect from a studio-grade fluid head: dual rosettes, sliding balance plate, illuminated bubble level, and continuously variable true fluid drag and counterbalance. In contrast to its predecessor, the Focus fluid head, the HiDV features a 75mm leveling ball instead of 100mm in order to utilize lighter weight ENG tripods for greater agility in the field. Single-stage Aluminum alloy Tripod The Action-Pro single-stage aluminum alloy tripod combines superb torsional rigidity with the lightest weight possible specifically for run-and-gun ENG applications. It incorporates a fast-action stage clamping system with a safety lock, and when used in conjunction with the included mid-level spreader and rubber feet, payload integrity is ensured regardless of terrain.

I really miss my EF 70-200mm f/4L IS, but not enough to buy another one.

I’ve said before that if I ever got a full-frame camera I would opt for a 70-200mm f/2.8 instead of a f/4. My reasoning is I would use a 70-200 on full-frame differently than a 70-200 on APS-C. On full-frame, 70-200mm is more or less the portrait range, and as such is designed for portraits and event photography – applications where you typically want to blur the background with a large-aperture lens. On APS-C, 70-200 is a compromise: a bit too long for event photography and too short for wildlife, but passable for both given a budget. Thus, I got an f/4 on APS-C, but now that I have a full-frame camera and no more f/4, I’m planning to replace it with an f/2.8.

I’ve been holding off for weeks, though, because of rumors of an update to the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS (and an unfounded hope the original 70-200 f/2.8 IS would drop in price). Indeed, last week Canon announced the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II.

Improvements over the original EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS are not earth-shaking but are comprehensive:

• sharper at all focal lengths and apertures
• more effective image stabilization (4-stop vs. 3-stop)
• shorter minimum focus distance (1.2m vs. 1.4m)
• faster AF
• stronger build
• recessed buttons

There’s no reason to doubt Canon’s claims of a one-stop improvement in image stabilization effectiveness – the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS has had this for years. The same is true for the MFD.

If the MTF charts are right (generally they are a good guide, but Canon USA has mislabeled MTF charts in the past), the new lens should be about as sharp as the 70-200mm f/4L IS wide open (but presumably sharper stopped down to f/4), sharper than the 70-200mm f/2.8L, and sharper (except in the corners) than even the 200mm f/2L IS wide open (which is again presumably sharper stopped down to f/2.8).

These improvements come at the cost of, well, cost. The official price has not yet been announced, but my money (literally) is on the range $2250-2400, making it about $550-700 more than the currently rebate-reduced price of the original 70-200mm f/2.8L IS.

Will it be worth $2400? Lots of Nikon shooters think their new 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II is worth $2400. This is definitely not priced for amateurs, though – I could get either a 5D Mk II or a TS-E 17mm f/4L for only a hundred more.

As an amateur for whom event photography is not a primary pursuit, I could not justify purchasing this lens on its own. The only way I can justify it is if, like my 70-200mm f/4 on my 450D, it can serve for all my telephoto needs. That means adding a 2x teleconverter to turn it into a 140-400mm f/5.6 IS as well. There are lots of pros and cons to choosing that over an EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS, so I’ll tackle that chain of reasoning later.

Ellienoir Roamsabout (and a sob story with a Hollywood ending)

Ellienoir Roamsabout (and a sob story with a Hollywood ending)

This photo was taken on Friday, shortly before my lovely daughter knocked over my tripodded DSLR, with predictably ugly results. I didn't actually see it happen, but the story more or less goes like this...

I carelessly left the camera tripodded on the lawn in the backyard and went to pick my son up from school. Upon returning, I had to jump directly into the home office to do some rather urgent work, and my wife moved the tripodded camera off of the lawn and on to our back patio so that my boy and his friend could play some soccer. So far so good.

Then, along comes my daughter. It gets hazy here, but best I could piece together from eyewitness testimony (my son), she tried to pick up the tripod just to see if she could.

Well, she could, only...

Within a second or two, she sort of lost control of the whole apparatus and let go...

falling...

falling...

falling...

BOOM!

Of course, nobody really said anything to me about it.

To be fair, they probably feared the worst for the camera, and felt badly even though it was nobody's fault but my own. When I came back into the house, I detached the camera from the tripod, put it up to my eye, and aimed at some autumn leaves.

I saw blur and shards.

Some sort of mirror inside the viewfinder had shattered.

My daughter, the defiant one, could only muster a very sincere "sorry" when she saw my crestfallen expression. Probably the most sincere "sorry" I've ever heard her utter (she throws the term around rather loosely as a means of avoiding consequence). =D

So, it's off to Canon with the XT for an estimate (I'm not optimistic), and of course my used Canon film body (new to me) is in the shop as well because the mirror came loose in transit.

::sob::

Since I'm clearly unable to function without a camera, my mother took pity and lent me her Canon film body (thanks mom). It's great fun, and I think it's helping my photography -- I am definitely more conscious of my composition and framing. I still shoot maybe a little too freely for my own good, given the expense (I'm on my 7th roll of film already), but I'm trying to be deliberate.

Anyhow, so what. Cue Hollywood ending...

My wife has offered to take the XT off of my hands when it returns and has blessed my purchasing a new DSLR!

While I was seriously tempted by a new 5D with the rebates going on, I decided not to break the bank and found a nice used 20D with a couple of lenses (like I need more of those) for a steal of a deal.

So the 20D's en route, and I'll be in the envious position of having to decide which of my way-too-many lenses to get rid of (after I experiment with the new ones a bit).

The nice thing about the 20D is that it should hopefully prove more daughter-proof.

Hopefully.

Histories of Namibia: Living Through the Liberation Struggle

This collection of oral histories reveals the struggles of 10 Namibians in surviving 23 years of war and moving forward with their lives in the aftermath. As this book reveals, though most had endured hardship and hunger and witnessed terrible cruelty and suffering, their outlooks were triumphant and optimistic, and their stories are full of enthusiasm, energy, determination, and purpose. These inspiring stories are representative of a whole generation of Namibians who matured in the struggle, becoming skilled, disciplined, cosmopolitan, and tough.

My son has a toy hamonica, a bright blue one with fish on it. Naturally I end up playing with it and make enough of a racket to start seriously annoying everyone in the house. What I was surprised at was how many childhood memories came flooding back from when I had similar toys and used to love playing with them.

I can remember thinking that when I was older I'd buy a decent one and learn to play it properly.

So, I've decided to learn the harmonica. After a bit of reading I found that a 10 hole diatonic type in C is ideal for beginners so what you see here is the one I've bought off e-bay for ?4.99. Fair enough, it's not exactly a decent one but I figured I'll start with something cheap in case it turns into just a passing phase - although I'm already looking at nice box sets.

Anyway, I'm now busy learning a couple of favourites, "Piano Man" by Billy Joel and "Man of Constant Sorrow" from the film "Oh Brother Where Art Thou". I'm doing all the typical beginner stuff like learning to bend and struggling with hole 2. There's some great stuff on Youtube on this.

Naturally after buying something shiny, it's only a matter of time before the camera starts pointing at it. This was taken with the Fuji S200exr and the harmonica was on a sheet of white paper with a couple of others used to construct a tent over it to control reflections. I had a Canon 430EXII flash pointing through the tent from camera left triggered with a Cactus V3 radio trigger.

Memory

People seem to be intrigued by memory, and by its sometimes spectacular failure in (for example) people with amnesia. However, students of memory sometimes fail to retain this fascination. The reason is clear: in order to study memory we must carry out carefully-designed experiments, which can seem boring even when they are exciting science. Fortunately, we now know enough about memory to relate laboratory studies to the world beyond. In other words, our scientific knowledge of memory and how it works can help us to explain those aspects of memory that most people find of greatest interest.
This book presents a thorough, accessible and appealing overview of the field, written with students in mind, by some of the world's leading researchers. It starts with a brief overview and explanation of the scientific approach to memory before going on to discuss the basic characteristics of the various memory systems and how they work. Summaries of short-term and working memory are followed by chapters on learning, the role of organization in memory, the ways in which our knowledge of the world is stored, retrieval, and on intentional and motivated forgetting.
The latter half of the book involves the broader application of our basic understanding of memory, with chapters on autobiographical memory, amnesia, and on memory in childhood and aging. After chapters discussing eyewitness testimony and prospective memory, a final chapter addresses an issue of great importance to students – how to improve your memory.
Each chapter of the book is written by one of the three authors, an approach which takes full advantage of their individual expertise, style and personality. This enhances students’ enjoyment of the book, allowing them to share the authors’ own fascination with human memory.

Program notes

We are part of a community of artists using internet technologies to facilitate real-time, collaborative concerts in multiple locations, a practice often termed "telematic" performance. Consumer products such as Skype are increasingly common, and in many ways telepresence is already widespread in our culture. We are interested in performing with high quality audio and video connections, which we are privileged to access thanks to Internet2 networks and other forms of support at our academic institutions. More than simply refining ways to use these tools to perform our music, we also want to create new artistic works that explore the potentials of this telematic space.

Our main audio technology is the open source JackTrip software developed at Stanford University's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA), which allows multi-channel, CD-quality audio with extremely low latency. Using JackTrip, we have performed across continents and oceans, in which case the delay in sound can often be substantial. However, within a few hundred miles or less, as in tonight's concert, the latency is often at nearly imperceptible levels, allowing us to play rhythmically complex music with tight synchrony.

Over the course of producing many telematic concerts, we have also realized the importance of the visual dimension for events involving remote performers, and so we have increasingly sought out collaborators in video and other visual media. Thanks to the contributions of intermedia artist John Craword and scenic designer Victoria Petrovich, tonight's concert is among the most visually complex and creative that we have experienced to date. Crawford brings many years of work in telepresence and intermedia improvisation in both dance and musical contexts, and Petrovich's scenic design moves beyond the the flatness and centrality of the screen, instead creating a more multi-dimensional and integrated environment.

Tonight's projected video is a real-time improvised response to the music in visual form, generated by John Crawford's Active Space interactive media performance system. Live video feeds are processed simultaneously by multiple networked computers running the Active Space software at both sites and directed by Crawford in Irvine to produce abstract, painterly representations of the performers, interleaved with drawings by Don Reich. In continuous development since 1994, the Active Space system has been used in dance and music performances, public art projects, gallery installations and teaching environments.

The stage design at the UC San Diego site is a small-scale exploration of scenic space as an expressive, flexible component of the telematic performance environment. Translucent screens are meant to integrate with the environment, and evoke a sense of expansion and an articulation of atmosphere through the diffusion and direction of light, i.e. video projection. The intention is to enhance the performance, rather than present a faithful reproduction of imagery on a traditional film screen.

The music you will hear in tonight's performance was developed through a highly collaborative process that spannned nine months. As composer-improvisers with a shared affinity for jazz and other exploratory traditions, our work is already profoundly collaborative, as is the telematic medium itself. While many musicians are naturally dubious about telematic performance, we conceive it not as a replacement of conventional practices but rather a supplement to them, a practice rich with its own possibilities that will hopefully become available to more people in the future.

We began monthly telematic rehearsals in Septem

Oh. My. God. -- Humongous thanks to Harris for the tickets: Row FF, about 20 feet behind Magic. It was an unimaginable experience.

Ironically, I was busted for my borderline-legal camera; The manual zoom extends way past the 3-inch limit, but luckily the usher was very cool. She warned me that they monitor people's cameras via video but as long as I kept the zoom in I'd be fine.

I was lucky to get a few great tight shots early on but was too paranoid to shoot much else. And I almost brought the little Canon A510....

Circuit City

Circuit City

I do not have any affiliation with Circuit City. I do not benefit in any way from sales made at Circuit City. (Actually, i guess only their creditors do at this point.) Now that that's out of the way...

My first real moment of buyer's remorse came when i went to Circuit City last night (looking for something else) and saw that they'd had the Nikon D90 on sale for $910 including the 18-105 VR lens. That's about $45 more than what i paid for the body alone. I felt better though when i found out they only had the floor model still on sale and they weren't reducing the price for that one. (I'm wondering how many actuations it's had already. And how many times – other than by me – it's been accidentally knocked over off the display.) They also had an array of Nikon and Canon digital SLR cameras still on sale at some rather incredible prices.

Go now. There may be some great deals still available near you....

THE PRECIOUS GIFT OF FRIENDS

THE PRECIOUS GIFT OF FRIENDS

Reverse Macro, lens held against camera body

THE GIFT OF FRIENDS

There are days when
bubbling from us comes
the innocent child within,
who giggles at the little things
and wears a silly grin.

There are days when
melancholy comes to
visit for a while;
the mind feels tired, the body weak;
we have no strength to smile.

There are days when
joy abundant
grabs a hold of you and me;
wraps us up in all it's splendor,
lifts us up and sets us free.

There are days when
sorrow wraps us
in its cloak of grief and fear,
'till our hearts ache to the breaking,
'till our eyes can't shed a tear.

There are days when
love bestows us
with its wonderment and light;
with its beauty and its mystery,
its power and its might.

And there are days when
life rewards us
and seems to make amends
by granting us a marvelous gift,
the precious gift of Friends.

Valley Forge - Time Lapse

Valley Forge - Time Lapse

This is a time lapse video shot at Valley Forge National Park, Pennsylvania. This is the first time I made one time lapse video that's shot at different locations. As it was slightly cold, I was sitting inside the car and kept monitoring the camera through my rear view mirror (since there were quite a few runners in the park - not that anyone posed any threat, I just wasn't taking it easy with 1000s of dollars worth of equipment laying in the open!).

Also, one thing I found slightly interesting in this video is how the flag is risen from half mast to a full after the cop stops for a brief moment and rises the flag (towards the end of the video).

This video is shot using a Canon 7D and about 253 photographs stitched using QuickTime.

Polaroid I-zone Instant Pocket Camera Green, made in Thailand

Polaroid I-zone Instant Pocket Camera Green, made in Thailand

The Polaroid i-zone camera is a simple camera which takes it own Polaroid instant (pocket) film. The camera itself, whilst quite fun is really very simple. It has quite a wide angled fixed focus lens and manual aperture control (F10, F12.5 & F34.5) marked by symbols. It has one shutter speed and this is synchronised with the built in flash gun.

The i-zone takes 2 'AA' type batteries - but only for the flash. After exposure - each shot is removed from the camera by pulling on a paper tab. This draws out the pictures when then develops in normal light just like the Polaroid SX-70 and Polaroid SLR680.

Nice coloured camera. This is my only Polaroidcamera, normally I'm not interested in them, but I immediatly liked this one when I saw it on a local flee-market.

I REFUSE TO BE LABELED!

I REFUSE TO BE LABELED!

Have you ever felt that someone is categorizing you and (unfairly or ignorantly) expecting you to stay put in that neat little category? I hope this photo depicts that kind of struggle...

I realized recently (after my performance review, imagine that!) that some folks around work have tried to put labels on me and peg me in a corner where I am not challenged and do not get to use all my skills. This photo is the result of trying to figure out how to best express my frustration and rebellion against this, not only at work but with other things I do... So for the first time I set out with a camera for a series of (long and surprisingly difficult) self-portraits, and some experimental overlays using Photoshop to push my boundaries and try something new, something out of the box (or, better yet, can)...

Hoping February and the rest of the year go better than January...!

Comments, constructive criticism and suggestions on improvement of technique are very welcome...

My New Toy! :)

My New Toy! :)

The Nikon D5000!

I am really liking my new Nikon D5000. It's a great camera, little to me, but probably big to others. One of the main reasons I bought the Nikon D5000 is because of the D-Movie Mode. I really like the DOF control of this camera when shooting video in 720p HD at 24Fps (Frames Per Second). The Auto-Focus is greatly improved from the Nikon D60. They are about the same size also.

The Var-Angle LCD Screen is a huge plus. I wish my Nikon D300 had it. Well actually I take that back, if I had a Nikon D300s I would want it to have a Var-Angle LCD. But I wouldn't mind it on the D300.

One thing that really bums me out, is that this camera cannot focus with lenses like the 80-200mm f/2.8 (My next lens) and other lenses that do not have inner focusing systems.

Overall this camera is completely worth the money, I would definently look into buying one even if you own like a D3 or D700 or D300!

Pentacon six / 80mm ?2.8 / Portra 800
Location: Roppongi Hills, Tokyo, Japan
Notes: I like the below extract of Dave Beckerman's take on street photography and personally I prefer using prime lenses rather than zoom lenses for streetshots but each to their own.

Most types of photography can be easily defined by their subjects. A wedding photographer takes pictures of weddings. A portrait photographer poses someone and takes their picture. The nature photographer covers a wide area, but it is easy to categorize.

Street photography is difficult to define because it can encompass just about any subject.

If I were to ask you to name a few famous street photographers, you might pick, Garry Winnograd, Henri Cartier-Bresson, or maybe Robert Frank. But if I asked you to define street photography – that would be more difficult. You might say that street photography is candid pictures of strangers on the street. That might be a good start, but it doesn’t really describe street photography.

To start with, street photography doesn’t need to be done on “the street.” And it doesn’t need to be pictures of strangers. In fact, it doesn’t even need to be pictures of people, though it usually is. Although there are common subjects for street photography, it is not so much about the subject as it is the style of the photograph. I can easily imagine an astronaut orbiting the earth, using a street photography style.

Just as any object or scene can be painted with in a cubist style, just about any subject can be photographed in street-photography style. I say almost any subject, because the one thing that all street photos have in common are human beings, or human artifacts: things that were made by human beings. So what are the characteristics of this style which can be separated from the subjects of the image.

The most common and famous property of street-photography is the idea of capturing “the decisive moment.” The most well-known street moment may be the blurred image of a man trying to jump a puddle at the railway station by Cartier-Bresson. A moment sooner and you have the guy standing, looking at the large puddle. A moment later, and the man has fallen into the puddle, or cleared it somehow. You don’t really know. But capturing the moment, even if it is important, isn’t everything.

Suppose that photograph were taken with a long modern lens, and the figure was frozen at 1/8000th of a second in mid-air, and the background and foreground were blurred because the depth-of-field with a long lens is very narrow. Well, it might look very much that moment when a pitcher releases the ball in an important game. The foreground and background are blurred. Even the closest part of the pitching mound is out of focus. Can that be considered a street shot.

No. Why not? It’s the decisive moment alright – but without context – it isn’t street photography.

Since we’re imagining shots, let’s imagine that you are sitting in the dugout with a normal or wide angle lens, and you hear footsteps on top of the dugout. You wonder what is going on, and at the same time you prepare your camera, and the pitcher is taking his wind up in the background, and just as he let’s go of the ball, a naked streaker jumps from the top of the dugout onto the field. And you have snapped just as the figure was in mid-air, and the ball was coming to the plate, and the pitcher was finishing his follow-through. That’s a street shot. No street. No buildings. But you have caught two moments, and pretty much everything is in focus, and you can look at the picture and just be amazed. The viewer is as surprised as you were – though you had some idea that something was about to happen.

It’s that sort of moment, or juxtaposition of ideas, that street photographers are fascinated by. If you had a lot of money, you could dream up this still shot, and rent out the stadium and the team, and recreate this shot exactly as described – but that would not be street photography. And so long as nobody told about how the shot was set up and planned, it would be considered a great street shot. If everyone found out that they were duped, it might still be considered a great photograph – but not a great street shot.

The moment is not enough. To play by the rules, the shot really does need to be unplanned. It also needs to allow the eye to wander around and make it’s own conclusions about the meaning of the photograph. If street photography were a musical form – it might be jazz. It might be rock and roll. The style of music would have a measure of improvisation.

Street Photography is not the same as documentary photography

If you send our imaginary street photographer to photograph the President giving at a press conference, they return with pictures of the other photographers at the photo op. Journalistic images are a dime a dozen. Their style is about curiosity. They need find be surprised in order to press the shutter. And it’s not all based on juxtaposition, or th

Selective Background – Move Your Plant – Try Adding Elements

Selective Background – Move Your Plant – Try Adding Elements

The majority of flower shots I take are in backyard gardens and mostly in my wife’s garden. Each week something new appears and presents another subject to explore. The flower in this example was a potted plant on our porch. Since it was portable, I moved it. Since I was supposed to be cooking dinner on the patio grill I decided to grab my camera and enjoy the late afternoon sun. I had to work fast – I had about 20 minutes before it was time to eat.

The desired result from moving the plant was the following:
1.Find a simple background. The immediate view from our porch was a little distracting and I wanted a simple composure
2.Create pleasing out of focus bokeh
3.Selective simple subject – there were many flowers in the pot and by moving the pot I was able to isolate one
4.Control the ambient light. The aim was a backlit image using the late afternoon sun

The first few exposures after placing the plant were pleasing. I had placed the flower pot far enough away from the green background (flower leaves in the garden) to get a decent bokeh. I was also pleased that the flower was diagonal and filled the frame. I felt the side and back sunlight was working. The camera was on a tripod and since I liked the composition at this point, I was free to layer in new components in a deliberate and incremental fashion. A quick check on the grill confirmed that there was a good 15 minutes of cooking time left.

Impressed with my ability to work with natures’ light, I decided to add some light elements to the darker portions of the flower. The late afternoon sun was positioned in the upper right corner of the photo. I felt the lower left portion of the flower could use some splash.

We had some laundry drying in the yard and I borrowed two fleece coats (one black and one pink) that were on the rack.

The black coat went over my head and back of the camera/bellows. This allowed me to compose and review the work in low afternoon sunlight. Composing and focusing into a late afternoon sun made it a little difficult to view and review the image without the improvised hood.

The pink coat was placed a foot away from the flower. I thought pink was bright enough to add some fill in light and would also balance with the purple in the flower. The coat was just out of the image on the lower left corner. I used a bucket from the shed to place and hold the pink coat. I suppose the clothing drying rack or a chair would have done the job as well. The bucket was easier to fetch and I made a calculated guess my wife was less emotionally attached to it.

There were still a few minutes before I needed to tend to the grill, and just enough time to add a final element. A hand held diffused flash was placed in the lower right portion of the photo in an attempt to better expose the green stem.

Throughout these steps I used my hand and contorted my body to block some of the direct sun in the upper right portion of the photo. A rather interesting pose of me and I find this type of photography lends itself to the private confines of a backyard. No need to draw extra attention from my neighbors; my hand push reel mower handles that task quite nicely.

The photo/experiment was done when it was time to take the food off of the grill. My attention turned towards straightening up and explaining to my wife why I had a black coat over my head and that it was okay to move her carefully placed porch plant. Somehow I got a pass on using my daughter’s pink coat to aid with the light.
If I were to try it again, I am tempted to add a gel over the flash, perhaps a green gel to bring out the stem color. I probably would have experimented with shielding the sun a little more, either with some transparent tissue paper or bubble wrap or even something non transparent, such as a newspaper or magazine.

The photo was exposed at F16 for 1.5 seconds. It was made with a Canon XSI mounted on a M42 Pentax AutoBellows. I used a Fujinon 135 EP enlarging lens and something in the 100mm range would have also worked. Magnification (controlled by length of the bellows) was set to the point where the flower filled the frame. I used a Nikon SB28 DX flash in manual mode and synced with an inexpensive eBay wireless slave.

The camera, bellows and lens were mounted on a tripod. The tripod takes time to setup, but it speeds up the process when layering in components. With a tripod, once I got composure and focus in place I move on to the other elements. With a tripod, I am able to set it and forget it. It freed up my hands to control the flash placement and shade the flower from the sun. It also allowed for ambient light to be the primary source at a 1.5 second exposure.

At a certain point there is no right or wrong exposure and by working in steps and reviewing the work I was able to add elements to this photo. It also provided some insight in working with light and provided a 20 minute diversion before dinner.

Star Tours - Getting the Point on Nabu

Star Tours - Getting the Point on Nabu

As a follow up to yesterday's Star Tours queue shot, here is one from inside the cabin of the Disneyland version of the attraction...

WARNING: Spoiler Alert!!!
If you don't want to know what waits for you inside Star Tours, do not read further...

With boarding passes in hand, it is finally time to ride Star Tours again after nearly a year of waiting!
Upon entering the queue, guests are met with a familiar scene as R2-D2 and C-3PO service the new (old) Starspeeder 1000 clad in a striking white and coppery red livery. The reboot of Star Tours takes place in a earlier time frame than the original, with the adventures set just before the events of the first Star Wars movie, which became Episode IV: A New Hope as the series expanded into 6 chapters...

The biggest change in the queue occurs in the second gallery where a Droid repair facility used to be. Now, the line snakes through a security checkpoint featuring a scanner that projects thermal images of guests on a big screen monitor that is controlled by a hillarious wise cracking droid... Also in this part of the queue is a rear projection screen that presents silhouettes of busy space travelers as they commute inside the terminal. There are surprises in here, so keep your eyes peeled for familiar silhouettes...

Next is the checkpoint where 3D glasses are handed out and guests are directed to gate assignments. Fans of the old version of this ride will remember the video featuring a flight attendant giving safety instructions over a video monitor...For the reboot, the safety video features a droid giving the spiel voiced by Allison Janney. The original flight attendant makes a cameo appearance in the cabin scene of the video...Also new this time around is the inclusion of a little back story in the form of a "live feed" that shows C-3PO entering the cabin and accidently becoming your pilot...

Once inside the cabin, everything seems so familiar...until the cockpit shield is dropped revealing C-3PO at the controls. From here on, the ride is all new...I have been keeping up on all of the blogs that have documented the new features of this ride, including the multiple planet destinations and cut-scenes engineered to provide a "different" ride each time...But I was not prepared for how EXCELLENT this has all been accomplished! I was blown away by the 3D, which includes many little gimmicks that appear in the different cut-scenes. I was very happy to see essential Star Wars "lore" included in the scenes, and outstanding attention to details that only true Star Wars fans could know...

In my photo, you will notice a cracked viewscreen...and the tail of a Nabu Starfighter protruding INTO the cabin...A completely AWESOME part of the Nabu scene!
We rode Star Tours 4 times during the preview, and I could have ridden it 20 times if I had it my way.
By the way, photography is not allowed on the ride, but my finger "accidentally" depressed the shutter while I was holding the camera securely during our flight...guess I was lucky to get any kind of image from my accidental discharge...
:)

Oh, one more thing...It is possible to be BOTH a Star Wars fan and a Star Trek fan...I won't argue which is better...Let's just say that I know darn near every line from EACH of these series' movies and TV episodes. In the Queue of the first gallery, there is a hidden homage to Trekkers and fans of a certain Starship...

Crazy parking job.

Fire Station #1 is right up the block from me. Fire trucks scream past at all hours. In fact, I can hear one passing by as I type this. I'm always amazed at the skill with which these men navigate the 90 degree turn past my building. I haven't been lucky enough to catch them doing it with camera in hand... yet.

The men and women of Atlanta Fire Rescue put it on the line for the people of this city every minute of every day. Mortal danger is forever only a bell's ring away:

November 23, 2006
Firefighter Steven Mitchell Solomon
Atlanta Fire Department, Georgia

Firefighter Solomon was working a 24-hour shift on Thanksgiving Day. Shortly after 2000hrs, Atlanta Fire-Rescue dispatched a full first-alarm assignment for a reported fire in an abandoned house. On arrival, companies encountered heavy smoke showing from a boarded-up single-story brick structure. As other crews removed plywood window coverings and forced entry through the front door, the crew of Engine 16 prepared to advance a 1-3/4inch attack line into the house. Firefighter Solomon was on the nozzle as the line was advanced inside. The attack team immediately encountered high temperature and zero-visibility conditions. Within seconds after they entered, the battalion chief arrived, assumed command, and ordered the companies to operate in a defensive strategy. Before the line could be backed out, the interior became enveloped in flames and the 3 firefighters from Engine 16 lost track of each other. Two of the firefighters managed to escape through the front door. Firefighters who were outside saw the silhouette of a firefighter, enveloped in flames, running past the front door and moving toward the rear of the house. The fire was quickly knocked down and crews made entry from both the front and rear to conduct a search. Firefighter Solomon was located almost immediately by a member who was using a thermal imaging camera and several firefighters quickly removed him from the dwelling. He was unconscious and critically burned. When he was found, Firefighter Solomon had removed his helmet, hood, and SCBA facepiece. One boot was also missing. Although he received immediate treatment from firefighter/paramedics on the scene and was transported within minutes to a level-one trauma center and regional burn unit, Firefighter Solomon died 6 days later without regaining consciousness.

IR test #2

IR test #2

Adventures in Infrared

The sale of my Canon gear last year enabled me to realise an ambition that I've had for many years, that is, to try taking photographs using infrared light. As a student, this was simply too expensive for me to consider trying with cost of IR film and processing, but it turns out that some digital cameras (and lenses) are particularly suited to this technique due to having above average sensitivity to the near-infrared wavelengths.

So I bought a second-hand Nikon D70s and sent it away to have the IR blocking filter over the sensor removed and replaced with an IR pass filter - this cuts out most of the visible wavelengths apart from deep red. Today was my first real opportunity to set up the camera and try it out in the field.

This shot, like the previous one, shows the colour of the image out of the camera; I've adjusted the levels and contrast, as images tend to be a bit flat if they're not strongly lit by the sun.

5D/Tamron 28-300VC ISO800]

...and a final USM. Clearly it has some luminance noise issues, and of course the vignetting...but overall not too bad.

Now once again from the top! :)

The point is to see what, if any, visible effect the various changes have when the image is displayed as it is here. I think it's easy to see: at this size & resolution changes that would be easy to see, and highly-beneficial at even 1MP, are basically just lost. Practically ineffective. This is a 12MP shot! Flickr is throwing away over 90% of the image data in its standard display format. Ergo either over 90% of the image data from a 12MP image is redundant, or Flickr is nearly useless for displaying images. Clearly the latter is not true so the main takeaway is that 12MP cameras are vast overkill in the digital age, when most if not all image-viewing is done online. Even though they are a product of the digital revolution, the revolution has passed them by. Anything over 3MP is as archaic today as film was 5 years ago. 2MP, maybe 3MP, is enough, the "sweet spot", where we want to be. Look at an iPhone. Surprise! It has a 3MP camera.

We have no choice, really. Those of us who rarely if ever print simply need much more efficient printing-processes and lighter, smaller cameras that capture far-less image-data and enable us to shoot at higher ISOs with less noise. We do not need bigger, heavier, much more-expensive cameras & lenses that generate even more pixels and more noise. Generating even more pixels only helps those who insist on creating large prints with technology that requires all those pixels. And that includes shooting film. If you're shooting film for *resolution* you're making a big mistake. Shoot it for color, if anything, and then scan your images in a way that lets you put 2-4MP images on the web, easily, at high quality. This is only an ISO800 shot, technically it could be shot with film (probably only ISO400 film given the error in indicated ISO), but one would need either an equivalent IS lens or a much faster, sharper non-IS lens to get this handheld. Or ok maybe you don't care if it's flat-sharp across the frame and you can take this wide-open and be happy.

An Unprocessed Jewelry Picture

An Unprocessed Jewelry Picture

My sisters both run a local and online artisan jewelry shop called Jameson Galleries. Because I'm the brother with the camera and the web skills, I get to photograph the jewelry and post it to the site.

After many hours of experimenting, we finally hit upon the idea of using the flash at night at close range with the aperture closed WAY down (1/2000th shutter speed, with the F-ratio varying between F/18 and F/24 in most cases, as much as F/36 in the most extreme cases). It makes for an unusual effect. This picture is one of the latest examples, and one of the better ones.
