I really miss my EF 70-200mm f/4L IS, but not enough to buy another one.

I’ve said before that if I ever got a full-frame camera I would opt for a 70-200mm f/2.8 instead of a f/4. My reasoning is I would use a 70-200 on full-frame differently than a 70-200 on APS-C. On full-frame, 70-200mm is more or less the portrait range, and as such is designed for portraits and event photography – applications where you typically want to blur the background with a large-aperture lens. On APS-C, 70-200 is a compromise: a bit too long for event photography and too short for wildlife, but passable for both given a budget. Thus, I got an f/4 on APS-C, but now that I have a full-frame camera and no more f/4, I’m planning to replace it with an f/2.8.

I’ve been holding off for weeks, though, because of rumors of an update to the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS (and an unfounded hope the original 70-200 f/2.8 IS would drop in price). Indeed, last week Canon announced the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II.

Improvements over the original EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS are not earth-shaking but are comprehensive:

• sharper at all focal lengths and apertures
• more effective image stabilization (4-stop vs. 3-stop)
• shorter minimum focus distance (1.2m vs. 1.4m)
• faster AF
• stronger build
• recessed buttons

There’s no reason to doubt Canon’s claims of a one-stop improvement in image stabilization effectiveness – the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS has had this for years. The same is true for the MFD.

If the MTF charts are right (generally they are a good guide, but Canon USA has mislabeled MTF charts in the past), the new lens should be about as sharp as the 70-200mm f/4L IS wide open (but presumably sharper stopped down to f/4), sharper than the 70-200mm f/2.8L, and sharper (except in the corners) than even the 200mm f/2L IS wide open (which is again presumably sharper stopped down to f/2.8).

These improvements come at the cost of, well, cost. The official price has not yet been announced, but my money (literally) is on the range $2250-2400, making it about $550-700 more than the currently rebate-reduced price of the original 70-200mm f/2.8L IS.

Will it be worth $2400? Lots of Nikon shooters think their new 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II is worth $2400. This is definitely not priced for amateurs, though – I could get either a 5D Mk II or a TS-E 17mm f/4L for only a hundred more.

As an amateur for whom event photography is not a primary pursuit, I could not justify purchasing this lens on its own. The only way I can justify it is if, like my 70-200mm f/4 on my 450D, it can serve for all my telephoto needs. That means adding a 2x teleconverter to turn it into a 140-400mm f/5.6 IS as well. There are lots of pros and cons to choosing that over an EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS, so I’ll tackle that chain of reasoning later.

Ellienoir Roamsabout (and a sob story with a Hollywood ending)

Ellienoir Roamsabout (and a sob story with a Hollywood ending)

This photo was taken on Friday, shortly before my lovely daughter knocked over my tripodded DSLR, with predictably ugly results. I didn't actually see it happen, but the story more or less goes like this...

I carelessly left the camera tripodded on the lawn in the backyard and went to pick my son up from school. Upon returning, I had to jump directly into the home office to do some rather urgent work, and my wife moved the tripodded camera off of the lawn and on to our back patio so that my boy and his friend could play some soccer. So far so good.

Then, along comes my daughter. It gets hazy here, but best I could piece together from eyewitness testimony (my son), she tried to pick up the tripod just to see if she could.

Well, she could, only...

Within a second or two, she sort of lost control of the whole apparatus and let go...

falling...

falling...

falling...

BOOM!

Of course, nobody really said anything to me about it.

To be fair, they probably feared the worst for the camera, and felt badly even though it was nobody's fault but my own. When I came back into the house, I detached the camera from the tripod, put it up to my eye, and aimed at some autumn leaves.

I saw blur and shards.

Some sort of mirror inside the viewfinder had shattered.

My daughter, the defiant one, could only muster a very sincere "sorry" when she saw my crestfallen expression. Probably the most sincere "sorry" I've ever heard her utter (she throws the term around rather loosely as a means of avoiding consequence). =D

So, it's off to Canon with the XT for an estimate (I'm not optimistic), and of course my used Canon film body (new to me) is in the shop as well because the mirror came loose in transit.

::sob::

Since I'm clearly unable to function without a camera, my mother took pity and lent me her Canon film body (thanks mom). It's great fun, and I think it's helping my photography -- I am definitely more conscious of my composition and framing. I still shoot maybe a little too freely for my own good, given the expense (I'm on my 7th roll of film already), but I'm trying to be deliberate.

Anyhow, so what. Cue Hollywood ending...

My wife has offered to take the XT off of my hands when it returns and has blessed my purchasing a new DSLR!

While I was seriously tempted by a new 5D with the rebates going on, I decided not to break the bank and found a nice used 20D with a couple of lenses (like I need more of those) for a steal of a deal.

So the 20D's en route, and I'll be in the envious position of having to decide which of my way-too-many lenses to get rid of (after I experiment with the new ones a bit).

The nice thing about the 20D is that it should hopefully prove more daughter-proof.

Hopefully.
