(16) Waltham Crescent St Pocket Watch I just scored a "junk watch" which someone simply let me have yesterday. During the night, somebody had dumped a bunch of leftover yard sale crap at the back door of the fountain pen shop where I work many weekends. Two women from the Prevention of Blindness shop next door where going through it and I spied a plastic bag with a beat-up pocket watch in it. I asked nicely, "Can I have that?" They were glad to give it to me. I looked at it and saw it said Waltham on the face. I crossed my fingers that it might be a diamond in the rough. It's not running and needs a new bow (where you attach your watch chain), but when I took it home and opened it up, I discovered I DID have a diamond in the rough! I have a 1901 Waltham Crescent Street, Model 1892, 18s, 21 jewel, adjusted watch, lever set, S/N 10585396. It's got a porcelain double sunk dial, with a crystal that was replaced with a yellowing plastic one at some point. The hands are showing some minor oxidation, but the movement looks okay from what I can tell. The case is a silveroid from the Keystone Watchcase Co., case S/N 8126538. So, I just scored a FREE railroad grade (for its day) pocket watch. I sent an e-mail to one of my watch repair guys I've sent things to in the past and hope to send it his way to get it up and running again. I’m not gonna put any dates as it may take a while for me to get these dolls. I am obsessed with dark chocolate skinned beauties, they are the fiercest (and the rarest) in the entire Barbie catalogue. It was a love at first sight when I saw a modified 1. Byron Lars Coco (from the Chapeaux collection) in Seloj Spa’s photostream. She is a beauty! She has a flocked hair underneath that hat, which to me is perfect! Just what I needed. I saw her one time on Ebay with a starting bid of $40, then the first bidder bid on her for about $150…um, it doesn’t make sense to me. Why pay more when you are given a chance to buy her for a super low price. Anways, she was sold for $300. She is so rare that she is usually sold for $500. Really want her. Now 2. Go Red for Women AA is also rare but I really love her face screening, her expression and her side glance, not to mention a lovely dress, it’s killing me! She is usually sold starting from $50. Aaah! 3. Glimmer of Gold Barbie. Another rare one. I freakin’ love her Marchesa-esque dress!!! But if I get her, she might stay in her box, but I’m really the type that would play with my dollies. So that’s gonna be hard for me to decide. Her current price may start at around $300 on Ebay. 4. Model of the Moment Urban Hipster Nichelle is the fiercest and the most high fashion out of the three MOTM dolls. She really is a must-have as she pioneered the model muse body. For that reason alone, I have to get her. I usually see her on the bay but I usually lose, as more than $60 is a little bit too much for me. So I stop bidding if it reaches beyond that price. I fell in love with 5. Jazz Diva Barbie when I saw a close-up photo of her face. There is sadness in her eyes, and it kinda tells a story there. That alone, I was sold! I almost won her on the bay. The winning price was $30. My highest bid was $29. It sucked! I didn’t win! That could have been a bargain! Now last but not the least is 6. Barbie as Athena. She is the last Barbie on the list for a reason. One reason is that I’m not a fan of costumed doll, although I consider hers as a high fashion/couture dress. Linda Kyaw did an amazing job designing her by the way. She is a bad ass Barbie doll! I gotta say that. But her down side is that she is very limited. The ability to redress her would be almost impossible due to her design. As expected she is sold for a very high price. She is just nice to look at. Deciding to debox her would be hard for me. Site 20 - Surface Hill Reef Two sites are referred to as surfaces hill. The other site is the hill 300 meters to the north but it is unclear which is correct. Page 46. ‘Historic Kiandra’. This provides good descriptions of gold finds on this site. Some of the largest nuggets of gold were discovered here with one recorded at 28 pounds. At current gold prices it equates to over half a million dollars for this one rock. Putting a monetary value on these finds may help to interpret the scale of the wealth being obtained and hence the craziness of the rush. Andrews, 1901, p 26-27. Andrews states nothing of value has been yielded from rocks taken directly from this reef. It is unclear if the gold found in this vicinity is from earlier erosion of this reef or alluvial gold eroded out of the Kiandra lead. Either way the huge specimens of quartz found here are excellent for interpreting the general geology of reef gold in the region and how it was crushed by stamper batteries and then treated for extraction. ‘ Historic Kiandra.’ P 49. Menorah - Seven Branch Menorah, Gold Plated 7 Branch Candle Holder Seven Branch Menorah with symbols of the 12 tribes of Israel Gold Plated, 5.1in, 13cm The 7-branch menorah is one of the oldest religious Jewish symbols. It originated from the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem in which is was placed and used daily and since continues to be a symbol of the Jewish faith. The Seven branch menorah can be found in all synagogues and Jewish homes. Unlike the 9-branch Chanukah menorah, the seven branch menorah has no Shamash (servant) and is the menorah which was mentioned in the bible, the priests in the Temple would light the 7 branch menorah every evening and it would burn day and night. In modern synagogues, a single flame (usually electric) represents this ancient custom. Measures about 5 inches tall, and about 5-1/2 inches wide. This treasure was repurposed, and upcycled, and self created by Me. Think Spring with this piece. I used an adorable Royal Vale Bone China saucer plate, and attached it to a glass candle base. The candle base has the sticker on it stating 24% Full Lead Crystal Made in U.S.A. The plate has gorgeous colors of purple, lilac colored flowers with very nice green leaves, and then a touch of a gold yellow behind it too. Plate if very white, the gold trim guild is in very good condition, and center of plate shows very few minor light scratches. Not sure if from use, or rubbing. This one is hard to let go as I thought of keeping it for myself. Recommended care for this piece is a soft hand wash, and dry. Oh, so many uses, and possibilities with this piece. Candle holder, jewelry holder, candy dish, trinket holder, decorative soaps in your bathroom, cotton balls, and endless possibilites. Feel like changing the decor in your rooms? At Work in the Congress Gold Mine Near Wickenburg, Arizona in 1890 This is a photo that I took of an old photograph of four miners hard at work in the Congress Gold Mine near the town of Wickenburg in the Arizona Territory in 1890. Mining in the late 19th century was one of the most dangerous occupations in existence. Miners usually worked 12 hour shifts in dark and dangerous conditions. Gold and silver deposits lie in angular positions unlike coal that lies in generally flat deposits. Gold miners spent the majority of their time tunneling down and then up underneath the vein. This involved the use of hammering metal spikes into the solid rock to place dynamite for blasting. However, before dynamite was placed, the miners used a type of jack hammer that was powered by compressed air and was known as the "widow maker." This machine was not only deafening, it also created huge clouds of rock dust and sent millions of tiny shards of broken rock into the air that was breathed in by the miners. These tiny shards scraped the insides of the miners' lungs; causing them to hemorrhage and cough up blood....this was known as "miner's consumption." Once the holes were ready, the dynamite was placed and the miners got about 50 feet away (they thought this was a safe distance). When the dynamite was lit, someone yelled "Fire in the hole!!" Once most of the smoke cleared, they picked up the rubble and started all over again. These miners were plagued with deafness, miner's consumption, missing fingers, sore backs, and headaches from the smoke and darkness (they were given only four small tallow candles per shift.....once these were done, they had to work in darkness). When their 12 hour shift was over, they passed through a room where sat a mining official and a man armed with a shotgun.....the miners were strip searched to see if they were sneaking gold out.....if they were found to not be carrying gold, they could go home and rest up for the next 12 hour shift, if they were found to have gold, they were taken to the town square and promptly hanged.......the average lifespan for a miner in the Old West was 34 years. There were hundreds of mines such as this in the Arizona Territory.....many produced huge amounts of gold and personal tragedy. Elevator Hoist Into the Mammoth Gold Mine at Goldfield, Arizona This is a photograph that I took of the elevator hoist at the old Mammoth Gold Mine in Goldfield, Arizona. This was a highly productive mine that was opened in 1892 producing low grade gold ore. It operated until 1897 when massive rain storms flooded the mine. The mine consisted of five different levels; the elevator lowered miners into the shaft where they worked 12 hour shifts every day of the week. The mine was reopened, briefly, in the 1920's after electric pumps were brought in to pump out the water from the 1897 flood. However, miners soon struck the underground water aquifer and the mine was permanently flooded except for the upper level.
