Now, you'll be wanting to know what I actually bought on my outing to Hay-On Wye. My first purchase was not a book but a gorgeous shirt, bought in a shop selling goods from far-off Nepal. Since I get enormous trouble with shirt sizes and can be anything from an M to an XL ...though I am far from extra large in any rational person's assessment of physique... I tried it on in the shop. The cuffs were a little tight when buttoned but, I told myself, this was because they were made for the narrow-boned Nepalese race, not our thick, uncouth Anglo-Saxon wrists. This added to the garment's authenticity.
Leaving aside the Nepalese shirt, I bought three books, all from the Hay Castle Bookshop ...run, I believe, by Richard Booth's wife. The shop specialises in Film, Photography, American Indians, Art and Architecture. A History of the Modern Movement by Kurt Rowland (Ginn, 1973) was a bit steep at ?20, but a "must have". It was once the property of the Powys Public Libraries who withdrew it from stock, no doubt to make room for DVDs and computer games. It looks as though it has been rebound by the library service and has its Dewey number on the spine. Manchester: the Warehouse Legacy is an interesting booklet produced by English Heritage and didn't break the bank at ?2. The Encyclopaedia of Modern Architecture (Thames & Hudson, 1963) was first published in German. I'm sure I used to browse through this book in my local library as a teenager. Some of its illustrations look very familiar. It is a beautifully produced book and brings home how standards have declined in the publishing business. The "boards" of the cover are so thick and rigid they almost feel like plywood. They are covered in a durable, hessian-like cloth, tooled in gold with the publisher's emblem. The book must weigh a pound or so. A snip at ?8. Hours of pleasurable reading ahead, in which to renew, in middle age, my acquaintanceship with the buildings I admired in youth. I remember 'em all. The AEG Turbine Factory, the Pirelli Tower, the airship hanger at Orly...
Me: "Winnie, what are you doing on my computer?"
Winnie: "Huh?! Oh...uh...I was...uh...looking for something for you. Yeah. You'll thank me later."
Me: "Before or after I get the bill?"
Winnie: "You're not looking well. Maybe you should go back to sleep."
Me: "Not happening."
This is how a new collector finds himself with six dolls in three months. They keep buying more while I'm sleeping! At least she has good taste. Her search string was "Blythe Rosie Red". :D
