Crossing the BLVD: Strangers, Neighbors, Aliens in a New America

Crossing the BLVD: Strangers, Neighbors, Aliens in a New America

A kaleidoscopic view of new immigrants and refugees living in Queens, New York the most ethnically diverse locality in the United States.
For three years, Warren Lehrer and Judith Sloan traveled the world by trekking the streets of their home borough. This book documents the people they encountered along the way. First person narratives are illuminated by strikingly direct photographic portraits of the subjects alongside the objects of their worlds. Lehrer's postmodern, Talmudic design juxtaposes the multiple perspectives of these new Americans, now thrown together as neighbors, classmates, coworkers, enemies, and friends. They reflect on the good, the ugly and the unexpected in their stories of crossing oceans, borders, wars, economic hardship, and cultural divides. These soulful narratives are put in context by the authors' personal and historical observations. The voices, images and sounds collected here form a portrait of a paradoxical and ever-shifting America. 500 color illustrations

The 70s: The Decade That Style Forgot

The 70s: The Decade That Style Forgot

A staggering collection of 1970s fashion faux pas, from torso-clinging disco shirts to billowing bell bottoms. Mothers in hot pants, dads in leisure suits, children subjected to cruel knitting experiments… The 1970s brought us many things—some remembered fondly, others with a collective wince. But the true horror of the 70s lies in the many and various crimes against style. Whatever the cause, an almost universal lack of restraint, coupled with a dearth of taste, led to some of the most ghastly and regrettable styles in fashion history. Most people have, of course, set fire to any photographic evidence of their grimmest fashion errors, so the author has had to search far and wide to track down some of the crotch-mangling, buttock-hing, polyester numbers you find here. So sit back and enjoy this homage to fashion's darkest hour.

70s Style and Design

A survey of all aspects of design that establishes the 1970s as a vitally important period in the creative arts.
Once dismissed as the decade of foil wallpaper and shag rugs, the 1970s are now being enthusiastically mined for trends from the fashion, music, and literature of the time. The period, which united elements of earlier movements such as Art Deco and Pop, continues to influence today’s tastemakers.

From artist Die Fields’s apartment to album covers of New Wavers like the B-52s and glam rock’s David Bowie, from the slick advertising of Italian fashion house Fiorucci to such seminal book covers as Germaine Greer’s The Female Eunuch, the authors have gone beyond the usual discussion of flares and platform shoes to address the design aesthetic of the decade as a whole. Architecture and design collectives of the time, including UK-based Archigram and the avant-garde Italian group Studio Alchimia, are also recognized as important contributors to the look and style of the decade.

70s Style is sure to inspire everyone from dedicated followers of fashion to even the harshest critics of the decade. Hislop and Lutyens have rescued the 1970s from parody and have produced a study that is meticulously researched and sensationally illustrated. 400+ color illustrations

Contributors:
Editor-in-chief: Stephen Drucker, since October 2005. Prior to that he was a contributing editor at Architectural Digest and Martha Stewart Living. Editors at large include Mary Emmerling, Senga Mortimer, and Robert Rufino. Other contributing editors include The Barefoot Contessa, Ina Garten, and Frances Schultz.

Past Issues:

Comparisons to Other Magazines:
House Beautiful has a clean-cut feel that celebrates a healthy indoor/outdoor lifestyle. Because it's all about the reader, House Beautiful does not endorse a particular style, region, or coast. It is an all-inclusive experience.

Awards:
Honors include: Interior Design Hall of Fame inductee, 1993 Circle of Excellence Award, International Furnishings & Design Association Star of Design Award and the Pacific Design Center Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy Special Interest Award.

Homeowners looking for design ideas will appreciate the wide selection of styles and treatments offered in House Beautiful. From the latest in simplistic style, new takes on Bauhaus-influenced furniture, lighter approaches to Victorian architecture, and a return to the gaudy patterns of 18th-century French room treatments, House Beautiful tends toward no particular school of design. It offers the best of a wide range of ideas, trusting the readers to make decisions of taste on their own. That said, one theme tends to run throughout. People looking for low-cost designs for small homes with simple architecture are more likely to find a sense of direction in these pages than those people of mightier means looking for the full-treatment solutions. --Brian Trinen

Birth of the Cool: 1957-1969

Birth of the Cool: 1957-1969

A gorgeous and ultra-hip look at the man who recorded the swinging London scene of the 1960s and helped define British cool

Before the age of Tony Blair's Cool Britannia, there was David Bailey--Cockney arbiter of the UK's "Birth of the Cool." When Mary Quant designed the first thigh-skimming mini-dress, when Jean Shrimpton burst on the scene, and when The Beatles took the world by storm, David Bailey had arrived ahead of time to record the scene with his camera. This young photographer emerged from London's tough East End and rose to become England's most famous fashion and celebrity photographer. He lived with Jean Shrimpton, was friends with Mick Jagger, married Catherine Deneuve, and was the inspiration for Michelangelo Antonioni's cinema classic Blow-Up. Now, David Bailey--Birth of the Cool tells the story of his meteoric rise to the top; collects his photographs of the most celebrated models and movie stars, aristocrats, and rock stars of the 1960s; and defines an era for all time.

Complete with Bailey's most famous photographs of Penelope Tree, Michael Caine, and the Rolling Stones, David Bailey--Birth of the Cool features his photographs of the Kray Brothers, the most notorious and glamorous criminals in 1960s London as well as private and unpublished documentary photography. David Bailey--Birth of the Cool is a must for the fashion conscious, photography fans, rock and roll aficionados, and all those interested in Anglo chic.

David Bailey's name is synonymous with the Swinging Sixties, when fashion photography became big business, and the man behind the camera could become as famous as the celebrities who posed for him. And Bailey was the most famous--the East End boy who became best friends with the Beatles and the Stones, the husband of actress Catherine Deneuve, and lover of model Jean Shrimpton--chronicling them all in a series of unmistakable, unforgettable shots. David Bailey: Birth of the Cool delves into the photographer's archive and reproduces some of his earliest work (the 1959 wedding of a neighbor's daughter was one of his first professional gigs), previously unpublished documentary film stills, and the spectacular images of quintessential '60s mannequins Shrimpton and Penelope Tree introducing mod fashion to Vogue magazine readers. The result is a treasure-trove of images from one of the most exciting periods in the 20th century, when the cult of youth, fame, and glamour was worshipped and--in this case--most beautifully recorded. --Amazon.co.uk

From the London Telegraph: Interiors: Toy story

From the London Telegraph: Interiors: Toy story

Formichetti's stuffed toy collection fills the vintage display cabinet at the far end and most other surfaces in the apartment Photo: Andy Sewell

High fashion meets children’s playroom in an east London warehouse, home to the stylist and creative director Nicola Formichetti.

By Francesca Gavin

In less than a decade, Nicola Formichetti moved from the shop floor of the boutique Pineal Eye to become one of the world’s most in-demand men’s fashion stylists. He is currently the creative director of Dazed & Confused magazine, a senior editor at its sister titles AnOther and AnOther Man and has worked with fashion brands ranging from Issey Miyake to Uniqlo. Half-Italian and half-Japanese, he divides his time between New York, Tokyo (where he has his own store, Side by Side) and his large warehouse space near Hoxton Square in London. The latter is filled with artworks collected from fashion shoots, junk-shop and retro furniture and a soft toy collection, which spills on to surfaces with plush abandon. It is a space put together by a highly creative individual – someone with the aesthetic confidence to place a Jack-in-the-box next to a Diptyque candle.

How did you first become interested in fashion?

Both my parents had a strong interest in it, especially my mum, and it just rubbed off on me. Living in both Italy and Japan as a child, I saw different ways of wearing clothes; going shopping with Mum was always exciting.

What connections are there between your work and where you live?

Living, playing and working are all so closely tied together for me that the buzz of where I live has always suited my needs. I have been living in Shoreditch for 10 years. It’s where I feel comfortable, close to the Dazed office and all the photo studios. All my friends live close by. It feels more like a community than anywhere else to me.

How long have you been in the flat?

I’ve lived here two years. My best friend used to live here. It was just a natural progression that when he moved out, I’d move in.

How did your toy collection begin?

I’ve been collecting since I was a child. It’s Japanese culture. I don’t have any specific toys that I like more than others, but I seem to have a lot of freaky-looking stuffed monsters.

Who are your artworks by?

I’d love to start buying art, but all of the artworks I have are gifts, or things left over after a shoot. The big yellow panels behind my television are by Gary Card. I took them after a shoot we did together for AnOther Man magazine. Solve Sundsbo has given me some of the prints of shoots we did together. Photographers and other people I have worked with have also given me pieces from projects they have worked on. My friend Mariano Vivanco gave me some prints of a shoot that we did together for Dazed. I’m keeping them all so when the artists and photographers get really famous, I can sell them. I wish I could put them up on the wall. I’m sure it’s not great for the artworks resting on the floor, but I don’t know how to hang them.

How does travelling influence your space?

I travel a lot. I always pick up trinkets and pieces from around the world, but ideally I want my flat to be a quiet haven. I like it being minimal, but I can’t help filling it with clutter.

Do you feel your home reflects your interest in fashion?

I try to keep my clothing and fashion stuff in one room, so that on the rare occasions when I am not working, I can switch off and rest.

Back in the Days Remix: 10th Anniversary Edition

Back in the Days Remix: 10th Anniversary Edition

Back in the Days documents the emerging Hip Hop scene from 1980–1989—before it became what is today’s multimillion-dollar, multinational industry. Back in the Days, battles involved rappers, DJs, dancers, and painters, not gangsters and guns. Back in the days, the streets—not corporate planning—set the standards for style. Back in the days, Jamel Shabazz was on the scene, photographing everyday people hangin’ in Harlem, kickin’ it in Queens, and cold chillin’ in Brooklyn.

Street style with an attitude unmatched in fashion in the 30 years since, Shabazz’s subjects strike poses that put supermodels to shame—showing off Kangol caps and Gazelle glasses, shell-top Adidas and suede Pumas with fat laces, shearling coats and leather jackets, gold rope chains, door-knocker earrings, name belts, boom boxes, and other finery. For anyone who wants to know what “keepin’ it real” means, Back in the Days is the book of your dreams.

When it was first released in 2001, Back in the Days was a bomb dropped on the cultural landscape, changing the worlds of fashion, movies, music, and art in ways still felt today. Now, 10 years later, powerHouse is releasing a new edition of this unrivaled classic, with new photos and text. Don’t sleep! Now is the perfect time to reintroduce yourself to the ultimate collection of timeless street fashion and style: Back in the Days.

Kenyatta's Style Titillation: Post-Glaucoma Test Hip-Hop Style

Kenyatta just got a glaucoma test - so he's super-sensitive to light. The whole house is dark with just some lit candles and he's not allowed to turn the computer on or watch tv. Therefore he's been sleeping on the couch all day wearing a sleep mask AND sunglasses. I think he's accidentally discovered the next hip-hop look. Oh and the green headrest really does complete the outfit.

Forties Fashion: From Siren Suits to the New Look

Forties Fashion: From Siren Suits to the New Look

"A fascinating narrative… Great stories, remarkable acts of patriotism…mark the indomitable spirit of humanity."—Booklist
Here is a definitive look at fashion in the 1940s—from French style under the Occupation and the “make do and mend” approach to wartime clothing shortages through the development of faux fabrics, the rise of American fashion houses, and the New Look of the post- war period.

The illustrations reveal the wide range of fashions and styles from the 1940s in North America, Europe, Australasia, and Japan. The lively text by fashion specialist Jonathan Walford details how fashion was considered not a frivolity but an aesthetic expression of circumstances in the 1940s. While Fascist states tried to create “national” styles before the war began, by 1940 the pursuit of beauty was promoted on both sides of the conflict as a patriotic duty. From prewar to postwar, we see attitudes emerge from period advertisements, images of real clothes, and firsthand accounts in contemporary publications. The result is a celebration of everything from practical and smart-looking attire for air raids (hooded capes with large pockets and siren suits) to street fashion and the creation of Christian Dior’s “New Look” collection in 1947. 196 color and 54 black-and-white illustrations

Old Clothes, New Looks: Second-Hand Fashion (Dress, Body, Culture)

Second-hand fashion has a history as old as the production of clothing itself, but until recently it was given little consideration. Used clothes represent the largest numbers of existing garments but until recently they were not perceived as serious fashion items. However, this has changed dramatically with the rise of vintage web sites, value clothing chains, and the fashion media's perpetuation of the idea that secondhand clothes can be recycled into avant-garde "cool". This book not only shows how important used clothing has become but also what role it plays in culture and history. The Japanese, for example, traditionally salvage sections of kimonos, while in India garments are inexhaustibly recycled. This cross-cultural and historical perspective fills a major gap by offering fresh insights into the innovative use of secondhand dress and age-old traditions of recycling fashion.
