(12) Haunting at the Lamb Inn Bristol IN 1761 there were supernatural disturbances recorded at the now long since demolished Lamb Inn, Old Market, of such severity that they are still discussed to day. They concerned the landlord Richard Giles and his wife, and their two children Molly, aged 13, and Dobby, aged eight. These girls were tormented night after night by something or someone biting them on their arms and necks and pricking them with pins. Whatever it was also threw the furniture about! We know a great deal about this 'haunting', if that is what it was, because Henry Durbin, a Redcliffe Street druggist investigated the happenings and wrote about them in detail. He said that he had also seen wine glasses rising into the air on their own and then flinging themselves at the girls' nurse. In addition Molly's cap flew four feet off her head and then landed on the floor. He had also heard something beating time, like a drummer, on the bedposts. And so it went on. Durbin was convinced that he was in the presence of evil but decided to communicate with 'it' by a system of knocks (For 'Yes', one knock, for 'No', two knocks, etc). This seemed to work. Richard Giles, however, was convinced that the evil had been instigated by an old Mangotsfield witch who he heard had been paid ten guineas to put an end to his new business as a carrier by a rival. He was sure that this was the reason that his wagons were continually getting stuck in the road without good reason! One time his journey from Old Market to Bath took 16 hours. Mr Durbin continued his investigations at The Lamb, calling in several eminent clergymen to witness events. These men questioned the spirit in Greek, Hebrew and Latin, but still only managed to get answers via the 'knock' system of communication! But the manifestations continued. The children were often flung out of bed by the 'evil spirit' and it said that three strong men could not stop the girls from being pushed onto the floor, or carried up to the ceiling. Pins were also thrown about the room. Several months later one of Giles's wagons broke down yet again, at a spot where an old witch woman was seen, and a harness gave way. Four days later the landlord mysteriously died, convinced that witchcraft was the cause. Mrs Giles, now a widow, also thought witchcraft was to blame and decided to call on the old 'white' witch of Bedminster. This witch seemed to know all about their problems and told them of the remedy. Unfortunately, we will never know what this was, but all 'poltergeist' activity suddenly ceased, just as it did whenever the girls were separated! This what we now call classic 'poltergeist' activity, especially involving young girls, but could it have been witchcraft after all. Or was it just a put-up job to bring down the price of the pub - later bought by Giles' mother-in-law for a bargain? I don't think we'll ever know. Morris-Jumel Mansion 13 "Overlooking the Harlem River on 160th Street and Edgecombe Avenue is the remnant of a 160-acre estate that spanned the width of Manhattan from 155th to 168th Streets. The Morris-Jumel Mansion is the only surviving pre-Revolutionary War, free-standing mansion in Manhattan. In 1756 Captain Roger Morris arrived in the colonies to fight the French and Indian Wars. He served with George Washington, who had become his friend, under the command of General Braddock in Virginia. During the course of the French and Indian War, Morris was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel. Mary Philipse had come from an extremely wealthy and powerful Tory family that owned vast estates along the Hudson River in what is now Westchester County. Mary had been courted by many young men including Washington and Morris. Mary’s choice for a husband was Roger Morris. In 1763 Colonel Morris retired from military life and bought a house in lower Manhattan on the corner of Whitehall and Stone Streets. He had become a member of the Executive Council of the Province of New York. Morris engaged a contractor, John Edward Pryor, to build a summer house in northern Manhattan. The estate was originally 130 acres and was purchased from the Dyckman family. His wife’s dowry contributed to the cost of the estate. The mansion was completed in 1765 and was called Mount Morris. The mansion has been reported to be haunted by various ghosts, of whom Madam Jumel’s ghost is the most prevalent and feisty of all. It has been said that Madam Jumel wanders through the house in a purple dress rapping on walls and windows. Other hauntings include the ghosts of Stephen Jumel, one of the housemaids who committed suicide as a result of a jilted lover, a Hessian soldier who, while going downstairs, tripped and fell on his bayonet. Because of the numerous ghost sightings, the mansion has been listed on the National Register of Historic Haunted Places. One of the most interesting and widely publicized cases of Madame Jumel’s hauntings took place on January 4, 1964, when students from Public School (now Intermediate School) 164, located at Edgecombe Avenue and 164th Street, were playing in front of the mansion. These students were accompanied by their teacher, Mrs. Betty Fitzgerald. The story that was given to Mrs. Emma Bingay Campbell, the curator of the mansion, by the students was that they were told by a woman on the balcony to “Shut up.” The problem was that the building was locked and empty at the time of the incident. Both Mrs. Fitzgerald and Mrs. Campbell questioned the students, and every story coincided. The Students recognized Madam Jumel as the woman they had seen from a painting of her on the second floor of the mansion." 13th floor haunted Haunted is a novel made up of twenty-three horrifying, hilarious, and stomach-churning stories. Stretcha Fetcha There's quite a backstory to this one! My entire time growing up, I was always a huge Matchbox fan. I used to play with these things constantly, as did my friends and cousins. We had tons of them, and the tracks and all sorts of stuff. When I was kid, just about 4 years old, my mom got upset with me (I have NO idea why, and of course it couldn't have been anything *I* did, right? *grin*). Now, if you have kids you know how this goes... you want a simple answer from them and instead of answering, they start avoiding you and not listening and make it worse, and in the end you get more upset with their behavior and how it all devolves than you were with the original issue... Well, that sort of thing occured... I was so busy playing with my cars I was not answering her (ignoring her, playing with my car). She looked at me and said "Give me that car!" in anger. In retrospect, she was probably just trying to get my attention/focus. But to a 4-year-old brain, I'm thinking "Uh oh, I'm gonna lose my car!" Of course these things roll really nice, huh? So I zoomed it across the floor and under a nearby couch. (these things zip pretty fantastic across hardwood floors!). Well, needless to say, that just enraged her more... She grabbed me by the booty and slid me under the couch (it was one of those Victorian style ones up on post legs, giving about 6" of clearance underneath. Not enough for a grown up, but a 4-year-old slips right in there...) and demanded I retrieve the toy and give it to her. I played dumb and pretended I couldn't reach it... A whack on the ass reminded me that I could reach it just fine... When she pulled me out, she put it on the floor, and stomped on it and smashed it and threw it in the garbage and admonished me that NOW she's got my frickin' attention, and I had better learn to listen, yada yada yada... I couldn't believe what just happened, and I spent the rest of the day (yes, literally HOURS) sitting by the trashcan staring into it with weeping eyes, just mortally crushed... looking at the little patient in the back (you can sort of see him through the blue glass window in back, moulded into the plastic inside), and saying "I know how you feel..." (him being hurt and all)... Broke mom's heart, and she has regretted this ever since. Not one of her finest moments, but as a parent I can attest now -- kids can drive you to the brink at times! :-) Well, this story got told and retold over the years... mom is amazed at my photographic memory (everything down to the pink fuzzy slippers she was wearing at the time!), with me being only 4 years old and all... and it's become a bit of a family legend. She tried for years to buy a replacement but they stopped making that model, so (and Dad) search in vain for years. Then in the mid- to late- 1990's comes eBay in all it's glory, where you can find just about ANYTHING online! And low and behold, one day I found a mint condition Stretcha Fetcha #46 in the original box, from a collector. I don't remember what I paid, but it was something ridiculous like $3.00 plus a couple bucks in shipping... I got TWO of them. I kept one, and I gave one to mom for Christmas... :-) As I said, it's a well-known family legend now... :-) I Check for Build Up I was careful to include an inspection port so I can look inside my chimney. It I go up on the roof remove the cap I can go back down and see all the way up with an mirror. Generally you want to only burn seasoned hardwoods of coal in this furnace but since I am experimenting I want to be able to watch up for any build op of soot or creosote or anything else. Safety first. The chimney itself is triple line stainless 6 inches on the inside and I believe either require zero or one inch clearance for code. Since I have a meta break I made a steel box that allows about 3 inches clearance around the triple walled pipe, and that is built inside a chase that is sealed from the top of the chimney down to the workshop ceiling, lined with sheetrock for fire protection and has about a foot of clearance from the metal box I made. It's anchored with straps to keep it center and I have about a ten foot section of one inch schedule 40 pipe T's off of the line for the freeze proof spicket on the back deck. The pipe is capped and naturally collects a pocket of air at the top. If I ever have a chimney fire not only will it first have to heat the extra steel box then try to heat the timber on the other side of the sheetrock which qualifies for fire protection if you use the 3/4 inch stuff, but the pipe will melt and burst and flood the chaise top to bottom with a one inch line running directly from my well which delivers 72 gallons a minute. The water will hopeful stay inside the chase, extinguish the fire and only flood the bottom garage floor instead of soaking all my oak floor and it's completely passive. It's just a simple length of pipe with no serviceable parts. The Flash: The Complete Series Movie DVD One of the more exciting and atmospheric TV adaptations of a popular comic book series, The Flash benefited from terrific special effects, but lasted only a single year on its network in 1990. The series stuck to the Scarlet Speedster's origins: police scientist Barry Allen (John Wesley Shipp) is struck by lightning during an experiment, and chemicals splashed on him during the accident give him the ability to move at incredible speeds (note: hardcore comic fans know that this is the origin for the '60s version of the Flash, not his WWII-era identity). The series partnered him with an attractive fellow scientist (Amanda Pays) who assists Barry in his crime-fighting pursuits. Where the show deviated from its source material was its choice of combatants for the Flash--episodes focused on decidedly human villains, like corrupt officials ("Watching the Detectives") and mobsters (Michael Nader played ex-cop turned hood Nicholas Pike in two episodes, including the pilot), and didn't pull in the comic's excellent "rogues' gallery" until the end of the season, when the Trickster (Mark Hamill, who appears in two episodes), Captain Cold (Michael Champion), Mirror Master (David Cassidy!), and a sort-of Reverse-Flash (in the episode "Twin Streaks") made appearances. Sadly, these appearances were too little, too late for the series, which struggled with a high per-episode price tag and a fluctuating time slot (as well as frequent breaking coverage of the Gulf War). But for the Flash faithful, the six-disc set compiles its entire 21-episode run, including the 90-minute pilot. Unfortunately, no extras are included. --Paul Gaita (9) Muslims Love Killing Muslims Before the Majlis recited by the Maulana can get over the Alams seen at the edge of the walls start moving in with the crowds, huge powerful crowd, the move around the periphery of the hall several times , within the human circle the blood shedding continues unabated , but now what happens is part of the crowd rushes in to the hand matam or beating of the chests , and I am supine on the floor I have to get up fast or I will be crushed under their feet, they see nothing they charge.. The onus of safety s on you not on the guy who cuts his back, these blades are extremely sharp.. moving at high speed .. This is photography in a deadly war zone without exaggeration I find ..it cumbersome carrying my long ens, as I want to be close as close can be , I shoot with the Nikon D81 and a Flash SB 800..powered by Duracell.. I dont use re chargeable batteries at all. Once again my sling bag split open , and this s a tough one handling the open bag and shooting ith an injured right hand. I do not ussually use the flash at gigs, but I had a hard time at this one becuase of some people in the crowd not keeping still and just pushing all the time like children, they thought they owned the entire floor and tried moving others so they could push in, not nice. Still the Flash works for this and the red eye kind of adds to it in a way, I may have to try experimenting with the flash work once in a while. Ellijay cabin This cabin was built in 2010. It is a very small cabin, about 500 square feet. It is situated for passive solar heat gain in the winter. In the summer, the deep overhang as well as the shade from the tree canopy keep the cabin cool. It has spray foam insulation and an efficient heat pump. The siding is locally milled pine, and the floors are reclaimed heart pine. Heart Pine Floor- Before and After the 'after' photo doesn't show how it will look totally finished, as we need to get 2 more coats of poly on there. it'll be more shiny. but still, we're excited! This is the updated rig, which required about 2 hours to fix up; if the orthodontist had realized how hard it was going to be, he would have sent me to the oral surgeon again! The orthodontist had to grind off the prior layers of bonding material and the metal bracket, and the bonding material extended below my gums. And then my mouth kept bleeding and it took extra injections of local anesthetic, which contains epinephrine, to stop the bleeding enough that they could bond a new bracket onto the embedded tooth. Now instead of a gold power chain, I have a very tough type of elastic power chain, which is actually much more comfortable. The extra loop that you can see here, hanging off the hook on the appliance, has since looped itself over the tip of the hook. This makes the entire thing a whole lot more comfortable than the prior arrangement, which involved steel ligatures, i.e. sharp pointy wires in my mouth.
