atlanta. night. empty street.

taken in atlanta, georgia. 9/25/07. around 1am. I dropped some british people off at my sister's house, and on the way out of town, decided that I really couldn't resist taking some photos downtown.

it's interesting, walking through downtown atlanta, camera, tripod in hand. looking up at buildings and down empty streets for photographs. got some funny looks for sure. one guy asked me if I was a professional photographer getting night shots of the buildings, and I told him no, unless he wanted to pay me. in which case then yes, I was definitely a professional.

my good friend frank was with me, which was good, because frank is crazy, and he would have beaten somebody up if someone had decided to, oh I don't know, knife a couple of nerdy photographer boys in atlanta at 1am.

most of my shots didn't turn out very well. a few did. this is an HDR that I actually like. it's 5 separate exposures. I used the highest f stop that I could, and left the shutter open from 15 - 30 seconds at a time.

streets were pretty empty.

This is wet knee photography :) Very scary to scramble down muddy, icy and slippery banks into a river bed and set up the camera very close to the water surface. I've never tried depth of field in landscape photography. With the new camera I need to try it :) Some say a landscape photo should be sharp all over. So I don't know and I'm not sure about this shot. Anyway... hope you like it :)

Red River Revisited

Red River Revisited

I had to make another trip to the little red river again. This place is so fantasic. I can't wait till the autumn colours comes out in full effect!

The colour rendition and sharpness I get from the 5D and the 17-40 never ceases to amaze me. It is just such a pleasure coming back to the computer, importing the images to the harddrive and just see how fantastic the colours are straight out of camera. :-)

This is just a different angle on my second latest shot. I really like the reflections of the trees in the water. And of course the bright greens of the grass in contrast to the river bottom.

Hope you all like it.

w12p1 / Best - Three Windows and Shadow

w12p1 / Best - Three Windows and Shadow

I choose this photo as my best because the high contrast of colors and lines were more representative of how I innately express myself photographically. It is what I first see when my "camera eye" is turned on.

1. The balance is symmetrical with a dividing shadow line and the balance of the three windows.
The overall pattern is the organic lines of the tree shadow, with man made shapes of the windows and the house siding.
The dominant shapes are the windows and the shadows of the tree.

2. Strong contrast is achieved by the shadow casting on the white background. The color of the red roof tiles and the green window blinds also helps to create contrast to the composition. Depth of field is kept shallow to allow the colors and shapes create a sharp abstract pattern.

3. The afternoon sun has a hard tonality against the house siding, casting a strong shadow. The color of the light is a warm tone, with the low sun direction and the diffused light (by the tree) softening the white color of the house.

4. The camera was accidentally left on tungsten setting, so I had to make the white balance correction to daylight in Canon camera raw editing.
I used a f / 9 to keep the depth of field shallow - I wanted all images to be in focus and sharp.

5. The photograph is an abstract. The subject is organic and man made lines and shapes.

Editing: White balance correction and cropping.

2 PAPERCUT

2 PAPERCUT

Overview
Steph, hands photo shoot.

The set, the hands…
This set is very important for the meaning of the photograph and a lot of thought has gone into how it would be created. The cube symbolizes being surrounded and being stuck in a certain situation. I have constructed the set very carefully and the end photograph gives the illusion of a 3D, showing how feelings are realistic, and emphasizing of the idea, feeling and illusion of being surrounded.

I originally wanted to stick white latex gloves all over the walls inside the box, but for many reasons it would have been ineffective, such as; the cost for purchasing many gloves, would have been very expensive- due to the fact I would have to of had enough to cover 5 square meters of area, adhesives such as: blue tack and tapes would have been ineffective and weak in holding such a surface to the vertical walls and ceiling, there wouldn’t have been much texture to the walls because all the white would have blended together and form one cohesive mass and I wouldn’t know if the walls would have held it for an entire photo shoot and the time to construct the set would have been unimaginable…
I knew I wanted to do something with hands and I later came up with the idea of using a photocopier and photocopying my hands as the design for inside the cube. It also seemed to be more environmentally friendly than using latex gloves because paper can be easily recycled. Also there was little cost involved, I could use blue tack to stick the paper to the walls securely, there isn’t much mess involved and it only took me about 3-4 hours to photocopy my hands and complete the set.

I have been fascinated with the idea of using hands for a photo shoot because I like how they can be posed in many ways to give different meanings, messages and symbols.
This also seemed ideal for my theme and ideas for my photo shoot in showing the inner feelings of teenagers.

With reading and understanding my message for the need to create such a set, so when photocopying my hands, the poses I did were crucial- they all had to be different and show the idea of trying to harm and to get to whatever what in the box, the poses had to be aggressive and angry looking.

I also really liked the contrast of the white hands to the black background- this also showed the important detail of the positive space what you can see: the hands and how they were trying to get into the box, to the person in it and made the negative space: the black area looks dark as though to think ‘what else is out there?’, and to reveal that there is the unknown

When sticking the hands to the wall, I had the choice of sticking them anywhere and everywhere or neatly in a pattern or an order. I chose to do them in a pattern, not only to save paper but to add to the meaning of the set. To just stick them all over the place would still have meaning to it- how people can attack from any direction any where, but I feel that the meaning of the contrast between the black and white was like ‘good vs evil’ and normally when two sides confront in a battle there is an order of event and who goes first- like in a game of chest which also incorporates the these shades. The pattern of the paper is of a brick laying pattern which demonstrates the foundation of the ‘attacking’ on the victim in levels, that it keeps building up and up, until it consumes you- thus being in a box and the wall are covered in this pattern.

The message…
I wanted to show symbolic and surreal pictures showing inside an emotionally unstable, victimized and bullied persons head and telling how some people can’t even find comfort inside them self to escape from the world, how it feels like that some ‘things’ and people just never go away; like your in a small dark enclosed room thinking your safe and suddenly you realize that your not alone, and you cant see the objects of words and abuse attacking you again, no matter how much you try to adapt, change yourself, ignore them they are still there, trying to get to you and destroy you.
I must admit this idea seems very negative in how I have wrote about it, but I want people to understand my messages as clear as possible, I want people to understand how some people can feel, and to open eyes to these predators who are looked upon with fear and the act of conformity, to avoid being the victim.
I feel that there is hope to be found in certain understandings, not from my picture as such, but from the viewer; to see it, and to then think about it and realize what not to be and what not to let happen to cause a reform in society where there is no need to for suicide, self harm, bad thoughts for ones self or others or anything of this nature which is primarily caused by that persons environment- ‘others’, these others who aim to torture drive one insane, insane to a breaking point, where you think ‘maybe there right, I don’t belong’ and then you become what you fear most, you become your own enemy.

DRAPERY ROD EXTENDER - DRAPERY ROD

DRAPERY ROD EXTENDER - INTERIOR BIFOLD SHUTTERS.

Drapery Rod Extender

drapery rod extender

    extender
  • A substance added to a product such as paint, ink, or glue, to dilute its color or increase its bulk

  • Any of various substances designed to extend any of several properties of a material; Any of various components designed to extend the length of a device; Another term for runner or quick-draw. (from sense #2)

  • (Extenders) Low cost materials used to dilute or extend high cost resins without much lessening of properties.

  • A person or thing that extends something

  • In set theory, an extender is a set which represents an elementary embedding having large cardinal properties. A nonprincipal ultrafilter is the most basic case of an extender.

    drapery
  • Cloth coverings hanging in loose folds

  • Long curtains of heavy fabric

  • curtain: hanging cloth used as a blind (especially for a window)

  • Drapery is a general word referring to cloths or textiles (Old French drap, from Late Latin drappus ). It may refer to cloth used for decorative purposes - such as around windows - or to the trade of retailing cloth, originally mostly for clothing, formerly conducted by drapers.

  • cloth gracefully draped and arranged in loose folds

  • The artistic arrangement of clothing in sculpture or painting

    rod
  • A slender straight stick or shoot growing on or cut from a tree or bush

  • any rod-shaped bacterium

  • A thin straight bar, esp. of wood or metal

  • A wand or staff as a symbol of office, authority, or power

  • perch: a linear measure of 16.5 feet

Canon Extender EF 2x II Test - Day 30

Canon Extender EF 2x II Test - Day 30

At Phil's suggestion I carried out these tests. That pretty much used up Day 30 at the lake. Now I have to get back to some organizing and some quicker photo shoots.

Goals:
1) Do I get better telephoto shots with a 2X extender than without?
2) How does quality depend on F-stop with these combinations?
3) Does backing off a little from the lens' maximum zoom help?

Subject:
A gin bottle. I followed the lead of dpreview.com in this, after finding that a not-so-flat subject tended to get focused poorly.

Conditions:
1) Velbon CX 570 tripod. A little flimsy for this equipment, but I didn't extend the upper shaft which is the most flexible part.
2) Shutter lockup used for all except the hand held shots. 2 second delay from shutter press.
3) Image stabilization on. That's supposed to be okay on a tripod for these newer lenses.
4) ISO 200.
5) Natural light outdoors - in shade but well lit.
6) About 45 feet (14 meters) from camera to subject.

Equipment
1) Canon 350D (Rebel XT)
2) Canon EF 70-200mm 2.8L IS USM lens
3) Canon Extender EF 2x II
4) The tripod already mentioned.
5) One bottle of gin. I don't drink the stuff, but it had a detailed label.

Tests:
The tests done are mostly indicated on the image itself. The line labeled "closeup" was taken with the same lens (no extender) from a couple of meters away for reference.
Note that the "stretch" line is included to show what happens if you just use software to enlarge a 200m shot to the size of a 400m original. The "shrink" line is the reverse. If you use an extender and then shrink to 200m scale, do you get anything extra?

Conclusions:
1) The extender doesn't help much. It gives the magnification advertised of course, but you don't see much more detail than without it.
2) Consistent exposures in this sort of test are a problem.
3) You can't beat getting close to the subject - but everyone already knows that.

Extender Study with ISO Changes - Day 33

Extender Study with ISO Changes - Day 33

Another day when those of you looking for pretty pictures will be disappointed.

Phil pointed out that since my 70-200mm lens and that same lens with a 2x extender have different best apertures, it might pay to vary the ISO to allow the longer lens to have an acceptable shutter speed.

The goal here is to find out what parameters work best with the extender, and also if the extender is worth having.

Subject: willow leaves

Conditions:
1) Handheld, to include the real-world effect of shutter speed.
2) Image stabilization on.
3) ISO 200 to 1600
4) F4 and F5.6 at 200mm (no extender)
F5.6, F11, and F16 at 400mm (with extender)
5) Natural light outdoors - cloudy, no shade
6) About 120 feet (37 meters) from camera to subject.
7) Slight breeze, so that the willow is not moving noticeably, but it probably moves a bit.

Equipment
1) Canon 350D (Rebel XT)
2) Canon EF 70-200mm 2.8L IS USM lens
3) Canon Extender EF 2x II

I won't draw many conclusions until others have a look. One thing that does stand out to me is that the F11 shot at ISO 200 looks very good among the 400mm shots. This is surprising because the shutter speed of 1/30 second should have produced more motion blur. Maybe the tree and I were just especially steady for that one.

This completely updated and revised edition provides all the basic, nuts-and-bolts information readers expect, along with all-new sections on faux finishing, including trompe l'oeil; Roman shades; and using upholstery fabrics for drapery and bed coverings. There is also a completely new chapter on hard floor coverings, including marble, stone, wood, painted canvas, and vinyl. Of course, all materials and labor cost figures have been updated.

Les Createurs de La Mode 1910 - 19- Salon de Vente - Worth

Les Createurs de La Mode 1910 - 19- Salon de Vente - Worth

Charles Frederick Worth (13 October 1825 – 10 March 1895, widely considered the Father of Haute couture, was an English fashion designer of the 19th century, whose works were produced in Paris.

Born in Bourne, Lincolnshire, England, Worth made his mark in the French fashion industry. He worked at several prosperous London drapery shops before moving to Paris in 1846. He was hired by Gagelin and Opigez, well-known Parisian drapers. While working in their shop, he married one of the firm's models, Marie Vernet. Marie would model shawls and bonnets for prospective customers. Worth made a few simple dresses for his wife and customers started to ask for copies of the dresses as well.

Worth, by now a junior partner in the firm, urged his partners to expand into dressmaking, but they hesitated to risk their reputation in a business as low-class as dressmaking. Worth found a wealthy Swede, Otto Bobergh, who was willing to bankroll the venture and opened the dressmaking establishment of Worth and Bobergh in 1858. Worth was soon patronized by the French Empress Eugenie, and after that by many titled, rich, and otherwise notable women. Catherine Walters[4] and Cora Pearl, the famous demimondaines, and Pauline von Metternich, an Austrian princess and musical patron, were Worth devotees, the infamous beauty Virginia Oldoini, Countess di Castiglione was often dressed by him. He also dressed actresses such as Sarah Bernhardt and singers such as Nellie Melba. Many of his customers travelled to Paris from other countries, coming from as far away as New York and Boston. Much of his work is associated with the movement to redefine the female fashionable shape, removing excessive ruffles and frills and using rich fabrics in simple but flattering outlines.He is credited as the first designer to put labels onto the clothing he manufactured.[5] Worth gave his customers luxurious materials and meticulous fit. Rather than let the customer dictate the design, as had previously been dressmaking practice, four times a year he displayed model dresses at fashion shows. His patronesses would pick a model, which would then be sewn in fabrics of their choice and tailored to their figure. Worth was sufficiently fashionable that he had to turn away customers. This only added to his eclat. He completely revolutionized the business of dressmaking. He was the first of the couturiers, dressmakers considered artists rather than mere artisans.

Worth and Bobergh shut down during the Franco-Prussian War and re-opened in 1871, without Bobergh, as the House of Worth. Worth took his sons, Gaston (founder of Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture) and Jean-Philippe, into his business and the couture house continued to flourish after his death in 1895.

Short Cuts to Designer Style Soft Furnishings

Showing how to create the special finish achieved by designers, this book features both traditional and modern techniques for making a variety of soft furnishings. The techniques are illustrated with step-by-step instructions, and there are tips and practical suggestions for each method.

Drawing on the secrets of professional workroom techniques, this detailed guide explains how to create the delicious fabric accents that "add warmth and coziness, coolness and quiet, or bright colorful vitality." Learn all the basics of designing, measuring, pattern matching, lining, and hanging, and then choose from among the more than two dozen projects to construct curtains, blinds, drapes, valances, tie-backs, cushions, and bed canopies. Plus, find helpful shortcuts (like using Velcro to close pillow openings or to hang valances), tips on alternate applications such as making a room divider out of curtains, interesting variations on standard looks, and suggestions for reinterpreting the designs to suit your own personal style. --Amy Handy

Comb Ridge from the west

Comb Ridge from the west

Abajo Mountains in distance. Odd name, since "Abajo" means "under" or "beneath" in Spanish. So what could these mountains be beneath?

Here I'm driving east on highway 163 in Utah. Comb Wash is in the foreground; Comb Ridge is in the middle; and on the other side of Comb Ridge, is Butler Wash. After crossing Comb Wash and through Comb Ridge, I turned north up Butler Wash to take two short interesting hikes on Comb Ridge.

The first to "The Procession Panel petroglyphs", a hike that will take me to the top and edge of Comb Ridge, offering spectacular vistas in all directions.

The second, is a short, sweet, shaded, globemallow covered canyon hike up to Monarch Cave Ruins. The afternoon was HOT for these two hikes so the cool of Monarch Cave ruins canyon, was especially welcome.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
May 12th through May 19th - - I traveled 9 states in 8 days, camping, driving back roads, visiting scenic and historic sites, and taking some great day hikes. These are some of the photographs from this solo "road trip".
Day One: Home in Eastern Washington; Mountain Home, Idaho; Owyhee, Nevada and a very cold night camped at Wild Horse Crossing south of Mountain City, Nevada.
Day two: NEVADA - - Mountain City; Elko; Wells; Ely (through a snow storm); Panaca. UTAH - - Enterprise, Veyo, to a warm and scenic enjoyable camp and hiking at Snow Canyon.
Day three: UTAH - - Snow Canyon; St. George; Hurricane; to Fredonia, Arizona. Forest Service Road #22 and many others to places like Monument Point and Indian Hollow. Too cold to camp (got down to 19 degrees that night), so dropped down low to BLM wilderness land off 89 A and spent the night among sagebrush and juniper with curious mule deer as "neighbors".
Day four: Opening day of the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. Visited the park and arriving early had many places (Cape Royal), entirely to myself. ARIZONA: Vermillion Cliffs; Page; Kaibito; and Navajo National Monument and Betatakin, where I had my nicest camp site (Canyon View at Betatakin).
Day five: Betatakin camp to Kayenta; Monument Valley to drive the 17 mile "loop road" through the monument; to Mexican Hat to recharge my camera battery (Canon G10) while eating Navajo stew and fry bread at a cafe along the San Juan River; to Comb Ridge where I took two short enjoyable "rock art and cliff dwelling" hikes (procession panel and Monarch Cave ruins; up to Blanding, Utah where I checked into a small motel for two nights.
Day six: Get up early and hike a bit over 14 miles down Kane Gulch; down Grand Gulch to Todie Canyon, with many side excursions to visit cliff dwellings, granaries, rock art sites, etc. Weather started to blow in by the time I finished my hike.
Day seven: Changed my mind with the weather. Instead of heading for the Bisti Wilderness (for the first time) and Chaco Canyon (for the third time) - - I headed north through Moab then turned east toward Grand Junction, Colorado. Stopped at Sego Canyon rock art site outside of Thompson Springs, Utah. COLORADO - - Grand Junction, Rifle, Craig. WYOMING - -Baggs, Rawlins, Lander, Dubois (where I got a real nice motel room for a reasonable rate).
Day eight: Left Dubois, Wyoming early. Cold, windy, cloudy weather with a hint of snow in the air. Drove up through Yellowstone Park and exited via Mammoth Hot Springs; then on to Livingston, Montana. On I-90; hitting sun, the clouds, the rain, then a nasty storm (between Missoula, Montana and Coeur d'Alene, Idaho). Slept in pickup camper before driving on through the early morning back to my home in Eastern Washington.
Day nine: Arrived home at 4:30 am. Another fun road trip.
A little while ago, I mentioned I would upload a night image from the perspective of the 2 corresponding uploads. I opted for this one because, although a horizontal, it just felt right. :)
Anyway, I hope it was fun to see. I enjoyed all your comments on the last image (Bay Bridge), although it took awhile. Haha. Thanks for stopping by!
Chacchoben - "Las Vasijas" Pyramid
Chacchoben -
"Las Vasijas" is the smallest of the three pyramids at Chacchoben, but it was my favorite. The thatched awning in the rear covered a cavity in the pyramid. I do not know whether the awning was to protect workers, or to preserve some artifacts from direct sunlight.
Pyramid
Through concise text and richly detailed black and white illustrations we come to know the philosophy of life and death in ancient Egypt.
When children catch their first glimpse of a pyramid, a sea of questions inevitably tumbles forth. "Why are they shaped like that?" "How were they made?" "Who made them?" "What were they used for?" Perplexed adults can sigh with relief now that David Macaulay has found a way to thoroughly answer all those deserving questions. His exquisitely crosshatched pen-and-ink illustrations frame the engaging fictional story of an ancient pharaoh who commissions a pyramid to be built for him. With great patience and respect for minute detail (not unlike the creators of the early pyramids), Macaulay explains the sometimes backbreaking tasks of planning, hauling, chiseling, digging, and hoisting that went into the construction of this awe-inspiring monument. Just when the narrative teeters on the edge of textbook doldrums, Macaulay brings us back to the engaging human drama of death and superstition. This respectful blending of architecture, history, and mysticism will certainly satiate pyramid-passionate children as well as their obliging parents. ALA Notable Book. Whether capturing images in the studio or on location, the Vello FreeWave Wireless Remote Shutter Release adds flexibility and versatility to your shooting style. Photography unplugged - shooters can interact with a model, view the scene or set from alternate angles, or set a camera by a stream to capture an image of a bear hunting while you remain at a safe distance away - all this and more without missing a beat, a shot, or a moment. This particular FreeWave unit is compatible with cameras with a 10-pin connection, i.e. Nikon D1, D2, D3 series and Fuji S3 and S5 DSLRs.
This versatile shutter release features Smart Code technology which allows it to be configured to operate on up to 16 million possible radio channels. You can easily switch channels to "zero in" on a frequency that provides optimal range and functionality.
The FreeWave operates with radio frequency (RF) technology, therefore a direct line of sight is not necessary; radio waves pass through objects such as windows and walls. It is unlike other wireless remotes on the market that operate on an Infrared (IR) system and require a direct line of sight between transmitter and receiver to make things work.
Since touching the camera even lightly while capturing an image can create a blurred image, the FreeWave eliminates this by tripping the shutter without any disturbances. This is critical when photographing subjects close up, and for long-exposures and macros. It is also extremely valuable when photographing nature, wildlife and other subjects that are difficult for you to get close to.
Old growth timber stump
Old growth timber stump
If we don't preserve what little old growth forest left in the United States, this is all our grandchildren will be able to see.
Most of the old growth stumps you encounter in the Pacific Northwest, have spring board notches where the loggers build make shift scaffolds so they could saw the huge old growth trees, at a lesser diameter and above the sometimes rock bearing moss of the lower part of the giant trees. This old stump showed no spring board signs but was not as broadly tapered as some stumps.
This photo was taken of my wife at the very start of our Shi Shi beach hike.
Sunday night June 14th, 2009 - my wife and I camped in the back of our pickup truck canopy at the “South Beach” camp on Washington’s Pacific Ocean coast.
Monday, we drove to Neah Bay, where we took an 8 mile round trip hike from the Makah Indian Reservation trailhead, along Shi Shi beach, to the beach immediately south of the Point of the Arches - - and back. After the Shi Shi Beach hike, we drove back north and took the short, but outstanding, one mile round trip hike to the Cape Flattery & Tatoosh Island overlook. There we saw marine birds and were treated to the sight of a gray whale swimming north through the channel between Tatoosh Island and Cape Flattery.
Tuesday, we drove from our “basic” motel room in Neah Bay, back to our home in Eastern Washington, via the Hood Canal route. The back road travel and hiking over the two and half days were really enjoyable. My wife and I both had a great time and especially enjoyed the hikes and the camp at South Beach.
My flickr photo set “Shi Shi Beach - June 2009” has a detailed narrative of the trip and hikes.
I seem to always run into these "odd" tree formations and can never resist a photo or two. The branches on this distorted evergreen seem to explode in all directions rather than the customary dividing branch pattern. Gnomes must live nearby.
Break in the Tree Line
Break in the Tree Line
Please don't use this image on websites, blogs or other media without my explicit permission. © 2009. Bajanexile. All rights reserved.
Shot on 10 October 2009 at Quidhampton Wood, Wiltshire, England.
This wood is quite dense and this break in the canopy is unusual. Tried hard to process a single frame version as Tone Mapped images with trees is a photographers nightmare as Wiltshire tends to be a windy County. Nothing could really reproduce the view like this image so I have stuck with it. The Frame Rate (3fps) of the 5D Mk.1 is the only negative with this camera's specification. If only Canon could have offered the same Megapixel count but with 8-10 frames per second, I would have bought one. Looking very closely at the many images posted taken with the 50D, I do not hold out that much hope for the 7D which has the high Frame Rate but probably will have inferior IQ Vs the 5D Mk.1 because of the incredibly small pixel size used on the CMOS. If only the Manufacturers would abandon this quest for more pixels and improve some of the more important specifications that are really important to photographers.
This was such a simple idea but it ended up being such a struggle. Floyd didn't want to wear this hat, and frankly it didn't fit a dog's head very well. I was working alone so it was very difficult to get the hat on, convince him to leave it on and take a picture all by myself.
My original idea was something like #1 but the lighting was terrible. The thing about going into the woods is the canopy blocks the light. That was the best and almost only usable frame from my original shoot location. On my way out of the woods I noticed that if I just take the picture on the edge I had a lot more light so I set up again to take the other three you see here. I like the one I used mainly because of the look on Floyd's face. I almost went with #2. I changed my mind after the upload.
#3 I include simply because it makes me giggle but it doesn't show the hat properly.
Hope you enjoy these because I forgot the hat at the park...
