Storyboard for video contained on Plato's Ideal Form of YouTube

Storyboard for video contained on Plato's Ideal Form of YouTube

I don’t really go to YouTube that much, but this is the storyboard for video that really should be there.

It’s based on that Old Spice Hair and Body commercial that starts with the grandfather building a model sailboat looking up into the camera and asking very earnestly “I have hair here, but not here. Is Old Spice Hair and Body Wash Right for Me?” (If they gave awards for acting in commercials, this guy would have to get best supporting actor. The pathos, the vulnerability, the brilliant conveyance of his burning desire to be “a member of the club” – it’s a tour de force).

But you have to suspended disbelief and imagine this video was put together by an 18 year-old high school guy who just found out his girlfriend was cheating on him.

And if you don’t like the f-bomb or references to having sexual intercourse with an entire football stadium full of strangers, you probably should stop reading. Deal? OK.

Roll imaginary tape…

Video Footage: Old Spice Hair and Body Wash Commercial

(bald grandfather assembling sailboat with granddaughter points to chest then head)
Grandfather: I have hair here, but not here. Would Stacey Donnabrickowski fuck me?
Announcer: Yes.

(male model w/ waxed chest on photoshoot)
Male model: What about me?
Announcer: Definitely.

(sunglassed, mustacheod traffic cop handcuffing fat, shirtless slob of a suspect bent over hood of cruiser)
Traffic Cop: How about me?
Announcer: Oh sure.

(fat, shirtless slob of a suspect bent over hood of cruiser)
Crimminal: Would she fuck me?
Announcer: Yes Mr. criminal. Stacey Donnabrickowski would even fuck you too.

I guess you could stop it there, but if you had to imagine the ideal version – the Platonic ideal form of this video if you will (just to add a philosophical sheen to the coarseness) – it probably would be longer and have more and more disturbing characters come up on screen. Examples:

- The “can you hear me now?” guy
- An entire football stadium that turns over cue cards reading “how about us?” (Announcer: “Yep, every last one of you”)
- Old farmer missing teeth behind mule-dran plow (Annoucer: "It's a done deal.") Pan down to braying mule (Announcer: "Sure thing."
- Chewbacca
- Gumby (Announcer: “Yes, Gumby”) and then Pokey hobbles in next to him (Announcer: “Oh, she wouldn’t forget you Pokey”)
- Etc., etc., etc.

This would probably work as an SNL piece and maybe be even funnier with all the bleeps. Sorry if it comes off as sexist, but worked w/ what I had to work with.
And besides - everyone knows men are bigger dogs when it comes to cheating than woman.

I guess if you wanted to class it up a little (if that's even possible) you can take out the cheating reference and change something...oh...I don't know...political maybe?

Maybe something like:

(grandfather assembling sailboat with granddaughter points to chest then head)
Grandfather: I have hair here, but not here. Would Bill O'Reilly use his fallafel on me?
Announcer: Yes, only it's called a loofah.

60/365: Will I get home tonight?

60/365: Will I get home tonight?

For some time now I've been considering uploading videos to my flickr stream. I am well aware of the controversy about videos on flickr, but I do like the concept of the "long picture" that flickr mentions as opposed to just the quirky video upload you may find on YouTube. In honor of my 60th self-portrait for the 365 Days Project, I've decided to shoot a video. (I'll have some more in a bit when I select the ones I like.) The 365 Days Group doesn't allow "long photos" so it won't be there.

Nevertheless, I've decided on some ground rules for my own videos, however:

1) No talking, other than what is incidental to the shot; no narrating in particular.
2) No multiple cuts: one shot, one upload. Therefore there will be no transitions (no fade ins/fade outs either)
3) The camera will remain still (or as still as I can keep it) to go in the spirit of a long photo.
4) No background music, unless it is playing from some source in the scene. The shot should capture the ambient sounds in the scene only.
5) Editing should be done in the camera, although I reserve the right to trim the ends for artistic reasons.

I really want to try some Koyanisqaatsi-kind of things, so speed-ups and slow-downs are completely appropriate.

Now with that in mind, this shot is of me wondering if I am going to get home. We had a massive snow storm in Salt Lake City today, and it caused for incredibly bad traffic. As I am wont to take public transit (GO GREEN! BOO YEAH!) I had to do a lot of waiting. Yeah it is a drawback, to be sure, but it gives me time to think of things like this. By the time I shot this scene, I was long into the commute and just about home, but there were more slow-downs ahead. My anxiety shows, I think.

I'm still working on what's the best video format to upload, so this one is "choppy" at times. I kind of dig the effect, but it is probably just my comptuer.

Anyway, don't expect anything funny in the scene, other than the fact that you are looking right up my nose. Being the clean-cut son of Shirley G-----, no errant nose hairs are visible, and certainly no stray, ahem, mucus. She would be so proud.
