1952 Buick Series 50 “Woodie” Estate Wagon

Specs: 170hp 320.2 cu. in. inline eight-cylinder engine, five main bearings, Carter four-barrel carburetor, Dynaflow Drive automatic transmission and four-wheel hydraulic brakes.

For 1952 Buick refined, rather than redesigned their cars. The rare and desirable Estate Wagon (Model 59) was the most extensive Super model; it used side wood trim sparingly, however the tailgate was hand crafted in the truest of “woodie” styles. All Woodies were produced in the Flint Assembly Plant due to the proximity of the outside supplier Ionia Body Company, who supplied the combination of wood and steel bodies from 1949 through 1953.

The early Super Series 50 were powered by an inline eight-cylinder engine and was distinguished by its three chrome ventiports on the sides of the hood. The Supers were the same size as the Specials with their 121.5 inch wheelbase, unless the Super Series 50 LWB version was ordered. This extended the wheelbase by four inches and provided extra interior room for its passengers.

16695594: The 1952 Series 50 Estate presented here marks the end of an era, as 1953 would be the final year Buick offered wood on its Estate wagons. This nostalgic driver is equipped with a Dynaflow automatic transmission, full wheel covers, electric clock, radio, heater, and wide white walled tires. Overall, this is a highly original example; finished in maroon paint over red interior upholstery, and proudly displays a beautiful patina throughout. The cosmetic restoration, although aged, remains very solid top to bottom, including all exterior wood. As with any older preserved vehicle the brightwork, undercarriage and engine bay are not show quality but certainly add character to the overall presentation.

Mechanically the Buick is in good running and driving condition. An excellent candidate for continued use or a great base for restoration. Early American Woodies are becoming very valuable and extremely hard to find.

It's one of 317 manufactured in Pontiac, Michigan and delivered to Knoff Pontiac in Allentown, Pennsylvania. I have the PHS (Pontiac Historical Society Documentation) and the build sheet for my car. It comes with a 350-Big Block Pontiac V8 motor and a 2 BBL Rochester carburetor and a 2 inch single exhaust. Pontiac built their own big block motors for the US cars. It is equipped with a 3 speed Turbo Hydromatic transmission and a 256 rear axle ratio which makes it a great highway cruiser. White bucket seats, console and white interior. It has unique am/fm radio, the dial flips over when you change from am to fm and vice-versa. It also has the factory installed 8 track player which also works, front and rear speakers, rally gauges, tinted glass outside sport mirrors, chrome wheel moldings and chrome windshield molding. Very importantly, it comes equipped with the T-41 Nose job which disguised it as a GTO. There is only rumour that only one true GTO convertible was built and there is no record of it being anywhere. A Lemans with the GTO options cannot be passed off as a GTO because the serial numbers will verify that. It came factory equipped with power front disk brakes, 14 inch-wide Rally ll wheels with the wide trim rings. It is its original color, cardinal red, with the white power top.

It is a numbers matching car. I am the fourth owner and I do have the history of the previous owners.

I have added the following; 4 bbl quadrajet carburetor, 2-1/4 inch dual exhaust, electronic distributor, new 225-75R-14 BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires onto the original Rally ll rims and a new top fall of 2007.

I couldn't help but laugh to myself when the homeowner told the crew on Engine 5 that we need an "ambulance, where the ambulance?" when they showed up first. In the end the patient was transported and the family joked about asking where is the ambulance with the firefighters before heading to the hospital.

1947 MG TC Midget Sports Car front right

MG Cars is a former British sports car manufacturer, which was founded in 1924, the creator of the MG brand.
MG Cars is best known for its two-seat open sports cars, but MG also produced saloons and coupes. More recently, the MG marque has also been used on sportier versions of other models belonging to the parent company.
The MG marque was in continuous use (barring the years of the Second World War) for 56 years after its inception. Production of predominantly two-seater sports cars was concentrated at a factory in Abingdon, some 10 miles (16 km) south of Oxford. The British Motor Corporation (BMC) competition department was also based at the Abingdon plant and produced many winning rally and race cars. In the autumn of 1980, however, the Abingdon factory closed and MGB production ceased.
The MG TA replaced the PB in 1936. It was an evolution of the previous car and was 3 inches (76 mm) wider in its track at 45 inches and 7 inches (180 mm) longer in its wheelbase at 94 inches. The previous advanced overhead cam engine was now not in use by any other production car so it was replaced by a more typical MPJG OHV unit from the Wolseley 10 but with twin SU carburettors, modified camshaft and manifolding. The engine displaced just 1292 cc, with a stroke of 102 mm and a bore of 63.5 mm and power output was 50 hp (40.3 kW) at 4500 rpm. The four speed manual gearbox now had synchromesh on the two top ratios. Like the PB, most were two seat open cars with a steel body on an ash frame but it could also be had from 1938 as a Tickford drophead coupe with body by Salmsons of Newport Pagnell or closed "airline" coupe as fitted to the P type but only one of these is thought to have been made. It was capable of reaching nearly 80 mph (130 km/h) in standard tune with a 0-60 mph time of 23.1 seconds. Unlike the PB, hydraulic brakes were fitted. Just over 3000 were made and in 1936 it cost ?222 on the home market.
The TA was replaced by the TB in May 1939 with the fitting of a smaller but more modern XPAG engine as fitted to the Morris 10 but in a higher tuned state and like the TA with twin SU carburettors. This 1250 cc I4 unit featured a slightly less-undersquare 66.6 mm bore and 90 mm stroke and had a maximum power output of 54 hp (40 kW) at 5200 rpm. Available as either an open 2 seater or more luxurious Tickford drophead coupe, this is the rarest of the T type cars with only 379 made.
On the eve of the war, MG had offered the TB model which, with a few modifications was to become the first post-war MG, the TC Midget. The chassis of the new car was essentially the same as before, but the sliding trunnion spring mountings had been dispensed with in favour of more conventional rubber bush shackles. This had been forced on MG, as it was unable to obtain the raw materials necessary for the original mounts, this helped to simplify the maintenance procedure, but made little difference to the handling of the car.
The engine was the now familiar twin-carburettor, 1250cc, pushrod, ohv XPAG unit. The transmission was also the single-plate dry clutch and four-speed synchromesh unit as had been seen in the TB. The brakes were 9 inch hydraulic units and the wheels the usual centre-locking wires. The TC was offered in one body style only - an open two-seater which was very similar in appearance to the TB model. All the old features were there : the humped scuttle with folding windshield, cutaway doors, swept front and rear wings, a slab-type fuel tank and rear-mounted spare wheel. It was almost as if the intervening 5 years had never happened!
Despite the fact that the car was so obviously dated, in terms of both mechanical specification and appearance, the MG TC Midget found a ready market. There were a number of reasons suggested for this a lack of other post-war cars, or the familiar design reminding people of the pre-war days, whatever the reason the Midgets success took MG somewhat by surprise.
The TC was the first postwar M.G., launched in 1945. It was quite similar to the pre-war TB, sharing the same pushrod-ohv engine with a slightly higher compression ratio of 7.4:1 giving 54.5 bhp (40.6 kW) at 5200 rpm but using more modern interior elements allowing a wider cockpit. The makers also provided several alternative stages of tuning for "specific purposes“ It was exported to the United States, even though only ever built in right hand drive. The export version had slightly smaller US specification sealed beam head lights and larger twin rear lights, as well as turn signals and chrome-plated front and rear bumpers. Exactly 10,000 production versions were produced, from Sept. 1945 (chassis # TC0251) to Nov. 1949 (chassis # TC10252), a larger number than any previous M.G. model. It cost ?527 on the home market in 1947

Alle Innenraumteile sind geschliffen und in schwarz hochglanzend lackiert. Himmel und Sportlenkrad sind mit schwarzen Leder bezogen. In der Mitte des Fahrzeuges ragt ein Audi Schaltknauf. Route 66 (also known as the Will Rogers Highway after the humorist, and colloquially known as the "Main Street of America" or the "Mother Road") was a highway in the U.S. Highway System. However, road signs did not go up until the following year.The famous highway originally ran from Chicago, Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, before ending at Los Angeles, encompassing a total of 2,448 miles (3,940 km). It was recognized in popular culture by both a hit song and a television show in the 50s and 60s.

Route 66 underwent many improvements and realignments over its lifetime, changing its path and overall length. Many of the realignments gave travelers faster or safer routes, or detoured around city congestion. One realignment moved the western endpoint further west from downtown Los Angeles to Santa Monica.

Route 66 was a major path of the migrants who went west, especially during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, and supported the economies of the communities through which the road passed. People doing business along the route became prosperous due to the growing popularity of the highway, and those same people later fought to keep the highway alive even with the growing threat of being bypassed by the new Interstate Highway System.

US 66 was officially removed from the United States Highway System on June 27, 1985 after it was decided the route was no longer relevant and had been replaced by the Interstate Highway System. Portions of the road that passed through Illinois, Missouri, New Mexico, and Arizona have been designated a National Scenic Byway of the name "Historic Route 66". It has begun to return to maps in this form. Some portions of the road in southern California have been redesignated "State Route 66", and others bear "Historic Route 66" signs and relevant historic information

Traci in front of my van in my backyard in Los Feliz. She had only recently retired from her infamous first career. I'm showing this photo of my van, and Traci, simply as an excuse to tell this story:

Behind the wheel of a loaded down '69 VW van, I moved to Los Angeles from North Carolina in the early '80s. A mere three hours outside of my hometown of Charlotte, the engine in my van blew. My west egg took a major blow, but the engine was repaired soon enough and we continued towards California. A friend was along for the ride, and for the ride only, in fact he flew back to NC immediately upon our arrival in LA.

We camped in the van as we crossed the US. One morning we awoke at some scrappy campground in west Texas. I had to pee so I got out of the van and walked out into the sagebrush to do it. While peeing I looked over, and there was a pair of cowboy boots, buried up to the ankles in the hard caked dirt, but perfectly upright like the person was lifted right out of them where he stood. They looked like they had been there for 80 years. I pulled them out of the ground, clunked them together to get the dirt off, and took them back to the van. The van had a recessed luggage rack on the roof and I threaded the dirty boots under the tines of the rack. Soon enough, we were back on the highway headed west again.

We pulled into Los Angeles in a torrential rain, but at a busy intersection somebody ran out into the street in the downpour pointing at my van and yelling, "Hey, you left your boots on the top!!" I thought, hey, this is a friendly town after all...

The boots stayed in their exact position on the roof for years, I never moved them. I forgot about them, for the most part...

As time went on I ended up working as a photo assistant for a lot of celebrity photographers. One guy I worked for, Greg Gorman, had a very swanky and moderne house/studio in the Hollywood Hills above the Sunset Strip. One day we were shooting Arnold Schwarzenegger for a movie poster. There was a large rooftop patio where we usually had lunch, and after eating I was leaning against the railing looking out over Hollywood. Arnold came up beside me and we both stood silently together taking in the view. Suddenly, and conspiratorially, he tapped my arm and spoke very softly, as if he'd just spotted a wild animal that he didn't want to scare off, and while pointing down at my van parked on the street below, said, "Look, sahmbody left zayr bootz on ze kahr..."

What God Hath Wrought

The fire-engine red Impala convertible, 1958-1972. Proof positive that God wanted man to be truly, truly happy. There's no way you could be driving this car down Route 66, the sun kissing your skin, that long red hood stretched out in front of you and acres of red and white vinyl upholstery caressing your backside, and not have a permanent grin when you stopped at that roadside cafe for a burger and fries.

Once upon a time (well within my memory), these were not antiques. People drove these in all 4 seasons. Kids rode (as I did) standing up on the floor of the back seat. In the winter, you threw a couple of snow tires out back, and kept on driving.

And there was no yammering about "safety", "child booster seats", "air bags", "ABS", "yaw control", "FWD", "AWD", "4WD" or all this other garbage people think will keep them from somersaulting off the road and killing themselves if they're stupid enough to go 70mph in a snowstorm. Or drive anywhere, any distance, in any season after "a couple of drinks". Hell, there's people who shouldn't get behind the wheel after drinking a glass of water with lemon squeezed into it.

No backup cameras then. If you thought your kid might be playing behind the car, you -- get this -- GOT OUT AND LOOKED BEHIND THE BLEEPING CAR! No tire-pressure sensors, either. You checked your tires (cold) with a tire gauge. If one was a little low, you filled it up. Slow leak? Get it repaired.

Will we ever get back to that level of personal responsibility, so that GM and other automakers can again build glamorous cars like this that the average man could afford? Will possession of a driver's license ever be considered a privilege again instead of an inalienable right for anyone with a body temperature, a pulse and fifteen bucks? Will we ever have 6-passenger convertibles that got 18-20mpg with a 283 V8 and had room for 6 people (8 in a pinch) and their luggage? Are we doomed to an existence of Aveos, Volts, Fiestas, Fiat 500's, Priuses, Leafs and and boiled-sweet-potato-shaped crossovers? I think you already know the answer to that one.
