Hummingbird guarding Bird of Paradise blossoms at the Getty
This hummingbird was very busy tending to the the Bird of Paradise flower garden on the second floor of the Getty Center.
I've noticed before that hummingbirds are very territorial, and this one was no exception.
I still don't understand what this guy was doing with these flowers (do Bird of Paradise actually have nectar? From his behavior it would appear to be the case).

Dusk at Indian post office
There were two large stone cairns at the Indian post office location along the Lolo Trail. I think it unlikely that any of the Native Americans who traveled this route for hundreds if not thousands of years, left any rock cairns. They certainly didn't need them to find their way and as the name might suggests, I don't think any of them were leaving written messages for each other.
The name of the beautiful place along the Lolo Trail came to it in the early 1900s. The site resides on a narrow isthmus of land with steep slopes dropping off dramatically and for great distances on either side. No doubt that those who passed along this "salmon grounds" to "bison country" route, traveled right along this path. To do anything else would have been way too much work and trouble.
So when you stand here and taken in the wide panoramic views, you can be assured that many a Native American (including Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce), and the entire Lewis and Clark party, crossing here on horses (and with little to eat), looked at a scene quite similar to what you can see today.
Even though the rock cairns (I saw two) are likely a late addition, they add a sense of human "this is a spectacular spot" message to a visit here.
This is one of many photos taken on a three day trip to the Lochsa River country of Idaho (7.30.10 through 8.1.19). What follows is the story behind this trip, if you are interested:
THE STORY:
July 30th through August 1st, 2010, I took a three day trip to the Lochsa River country in Northern Idaho. Crooked Fork Creek and Colt Killed Creek join to form the Lochsa River; The Lochsa River and Selway River join at Lowell, Idaho to form the Clearwater River; the Clearwater River joins the Snake River at Clarkston, Washington and Lewiston Idaho. The Snake River then flows west until it meets the Columbia River.
The Lochsa River drainage is rugged, scenic and rich in history.
I have traveled Lolo Pass (highway 12), which travels along the Lochsa River for over 30 years but rarely having had the time to slow down and explore the area, to hike it, drive “back road” routes and really enjoy all that it has to offer.
I saw a photo of a 1924 fire lookout on top of Grave Peak, Idaho on flickr several years ago and decided then that I wanted to hike there. Later I learned that the top of Grave Peak was where a young Norman Maclean (author of a River Runs Through It), served as a fire lookout as a 17 year old, back in 1919. He wrote a semi-auto biographical story about his adventures at nearby Elk Summit and his assignment as “fire lookout”on Grave Peak [USFS 1919: The Ranger, the Cook, and a Hole in the Sky",] I had read that story years ago.
A friend later loaned a book to me titled: The Lochsa Story by Bud Moore. In that book the story is told of “Isaac’s Gold” and a prospector named Jerry Johnson. Some hot springs in the area, which my wife and I hiked to this year, were named after that Jerry Johnson. Like the Lost Dutchman mine, the story goes that an Indian, named Isaac, knew where gold nuggets could be found among the Bitterroot Mountains. While leading Jerry Johnson and his partner to the gold, Isaac dies. Isaac’s gold source has never been found (of course), which keeps the legend alive. Grave Peak may have been named after the Indian Isaac, who died on it or near it.
Grave Peak resides south of the Lochsa River among the Bitterroot Mountains. To the north of the Lochsa River was the setting for another great story - - the Lolo Trail.
Lewis and Clark learned from the Shoshone Indians that the Salmon River canyon was too rugged to travel and that the Lochsa River canyon with its extremely steep canyon walls that pinched together at the river was not a good route west. So with the aide of a Shoshone guide “Toby”, the Lewis and Clark party traveled by horseback along the high spine ridge above the north side of the Lochsa River in 1805. They returned following most of the same route in 1806.
Lolo Trail as the route is now known was used for centuries by Native Americans, such as the Nez Perce, to travel back and forth to bison country both before and after the acquisition of horses. Lewis and Clark met the Nez Perce on the west end of the Lolo Trail and were given food by that tribe. That food included something new on their menu, the roasted camas root bulbs. Nutritious but of acquired taste, many of the Lewis and Clark party became ill from eating too much camas bulb.
Lewis and Clark suffered from lack of food along their nine day passage of the Lolo Trail route on their way west. They ate at least one or more of the colts that they had with them as they were unable to find and kill any big game in the area. They were able to kill a few grouse (they called them pheasant in their journals) and jays, but nothing large enough to sustain the group. Colt Killed Creek, one of two streams forming the Lochsa River was named by Lewis and Clark from one of the areas th
Swamp Lake from 7,842' peak
Swamp Lake as seen from my reconnaissance scramble to a high peak along Friday Ridge. We hiked all the way back to the missed trail junction then hiked back up the correct trail to the ridge above the lake (center of photo), just to be sure that IT was the right trail. It was.

NOTE: A young horse is called a “foal”. A female young horse is a “filly” and a male young horse is called a “colt”. Some folks incorrectly use the term “colt” to describe a young horse of either sex.
In the 1930s the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corp), widened, improved, and in some places relocated the Lolo Trail route. It became known as the Lolo “motorway”. I decided to drive and camp along the eastern most portion of this route to “feel the history”. The Native Americans, had created and used this route (Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce used the Lolo Trail to flee the U.S. Army in what is still considered a masterful strategic endeavor. Chief Joseph and his band almost made it to Canada and safety, but were caught and defeated just a dozen miles or so, short of their objective). Lewis and Clark traveled it. It was a place I wanted to see and experience myself.

Mughal thumb ring
A 17th centrury thumb ring from the Mughal Empire on whte nephrite jade with rubies, emeralds and a diamond with gold finishings.
The Mughals were Muslims, one of the more famous ones being Emperor Shah Jehan who built the famed Taj Mahal (1630-53) in Agra for his wife Mumtaz Mahal who died giving birth to their 14th child - a reminder that the treasures of the world are a poor substitute for peace and happiness in our lives.
Amongst the legacy of the Mughals was the introduction of a central government which brought together many smaller kingdoms; art; opening of new trade routes to the Arab and Turkish lands; landscape gardening; synchronisation of languages and of course their cuisine :)

James Macklin Chase was a poor Pennsylvanian who dreamed of making it rich in California. But at the turn of the century, the money to be made was in oil, citrus, water rights, and the railroads. Mack would have it all, if he had his way. And along the way, the men and women he met, the passion he found, the enemies he made, and the great historical figures like William Randolph Hearts, Leland Stanford, and Theodore Roosevelt, he encountered, helped bring glory to the extraordinary century.
"Riveting...CALIFORNIA GOLD strikes pay dirt....This sweeping epic is a dynamite tribute to the sheer pluck of one man who scorns all obstacles. He instills vibrancy in all his characterizations."

Good Money, Part II: The Standard (Collected Works of F. A. Hayek) (Pt. II)
This complementary volume provides five additional essays to expand our understanding of Hayek's ideas about money and monetary policy. Good Money, Part II: The Standard investigates the consequences of the "predicament of composition" which led to one of Hayek's most controversial proposals: that governments should be denied a monopoly on the coining of money.
F. A. Hayek (1899–1992) was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1974 and the Medal of Freedom in 1991 and was one of the leading Austrian economists and political philosophers of the twentieth century.
Stephen Kresge was the General Editor of The Collected Works of F. A. Hayek until his retirement in 2002.

Standard Oil Building
Financial District, Downtown Manhattan, New York City, New York
The Standard Oil Building, largely erected between 1921 and 1926 and finally completed in 1928, incorporates the company's original building (built in 1884-85 and enlarged in 1895). Designed by Thomas Hastings of the architectural firm of Carrere & Hastings, with Shreve, Lamb & Blake as associated architects, the building is notable for its distinctive tower, one of the southernmost spires in the Manhattan skyline, and the sweeping curve of the Broadway facade, which is punctuated by the arched openings of the main entrance portal and flanking large windows that dominate the street wall as it fronts Bowling Green. The irregular pentagonal site, one of the largest parcels assembled in lower Manhattan to that time, dictated both the building's distinctive shape and complicated construction history. The powerful sculptural massing and arresting silhouette of the Standard Oil Building represent the new set-back skyscraper forms that emerged during the early 1920s. Limestone curtain walls facing Broadway, Beaver Street, and New Street are enriched with large-scale neo- Renaissance ornamentation that enhance the building's picturesque quality. The building, erected as Standard Oil approached its fiftieth year of operation, reinforced the presence of the oil industry giant in the heart of New York City's financial and shipping center. From the headquarters building at No. 26 Broadway, John D. Rockefeller's associates directed the Standard Oil Company that monopolized the American oil industry, endured a sensational anti-trust decision, and retained a dominant role in the international oil business. Although Standard Oil's successor firm sold the structure in 1956, the building at No. 26 Broadway has remained a prominent address in lower Manhattan.
The Architects
The Standard Oil Building was designed in 1920 by Thomas Hastings (1860-1929) of the architectural firm of Carre re & Hastings, with that firm's members, Shreve, Lamb & Blake, serving as associated architects. These architects — a group of the most respected tall building designers in New York City during the 1920s — brought various types of expertise to the project which are evident in the completed building. The firm of Carrere & Hastings had gained wide acclaim with its winning design for the New York Public Library in 1897 (constructed 1902-11) and subsequently enjoyed a wide-ranging practice; many of the firm's buildings in New York City, including the New York Public Library, are designated New York City Landmarks. By 1920, Thomas Hastings, the surviving partner of the firm of Carrere & Hastings, had developed a personal, Beaux-Arts-inspired approach to the design of the masonry envelope of steel-framed structures, and was exploring innovative solutions to the massing of tall buildings in response to the setback requirements of the New York City Building Zone Resolution adopted in 1916. Hastings considered the skeleton frame and the exterior sheathing as separate entities with different functions; the first supported the structure while the second enclosed it. His designs for the curtain walls of the Blair Building (24 Broad Street, 1902, no longer standing) and the United States Rubber Building (Broadway and West 58th Street, 1912-13) were for thin, veneer-like masonry facing, designed for architectural impact rather than to convey a sense of structure; that design approach was at odds with the more structural, expressive style advocated by other tall building designers working in New York City, including Pierre LeBrun, George B. Post, and Bruce Price. Hastings was a consulting architect in the design of the Cunard Building (25 Broadway, 1917-21), and his hand is evident in the massing and facade of the building, either through Hastings' influence on Benjamin Wistar Morris, a former member of the firm of Carrere & Hastings, or an active role in the project. Carrere & Hastings designed two other tall buildings of note, the Liggett Building (at the northeast corner Madison Avenue and East 42nd Street, no longer standing, 1919-20) and the Fisk Building (250 West 57th Street, 192021); both buildings have distinctive massing with pavilions of uniform setback rising above large bases, and are clad with thin masonry walls detailed to unite the two main portions of the building and add to their pictorial qualities. The Standard Oil Building is a culminating example of the firm's tall building commissions, incorporating even more complex massing, a varied limestone curtain wall, and bold sculptural elements at the upper stories meant to enhance distant views of the building.
At the time of the Standard Oil Building commission, Richmond H. Shreve (1877-1946), William F. Lamb (1883-1952), and Theodore Blake (1870-1949) were partners at Carrere & Hastings. Shreve and Lamb (with various associates before Arthur L. Harmon joined the firm in 1929) established a
McLaren F1
The concept for the McLaren F1 began in 1988, when McLaren's top brass and designer Gordon Murray decided to use what they'd learned in Formula 1 racing to build a roadgoing supercar -- regardless of cost. The results of their brainstorm, the first car to use a carbon fiber chassis, debuted as a prototype during the 1992 Formula 1 race weekend in Monaco. Interested buyers could order a McLaren F1 built to their specifications -- and wait another two years for it to be hand-built and delivered.
According to many of the car mags at the time, anyway. The McLaren F1 had a 6.1-liter V12 engine with four valves per cylinder built by BMW. It kicked out 631 hp and had 479 lb-ft of torque on tap. But the F1's carbon body meant it only weighed 2500 lbs, meaning it only had to haul 4 pounds for every 1 horsepower. This gave it a 0-60 time of 3.2 seconds and top speed of 231 mph -- a roadgoing record that the F1 held for a decade, until the Koenigsegg CCR hit 245 mph.
The McLaren F1 put the driver front and center--literally. The driver sat in the middle of the car, with two passenger seats on either side and little behind him. The driver's seat was fashioned to order for each owner, and the steering wheel was positioned according to his preferences. The carbon-fiber body was new (and expensive), but the F1 was also the first to incorporate active ground effects with underbody fans that created downforce--negating the need for the more modern all-wheel drive.
Little Things Mean a Lot:
Though it was built for speed, comfort was not neglected. Luggage compartments ran along the sides of the car, and the available fitted luggage sets included a golf bag. Air conditioning, remote keyless entry, a Kenwood stereo, and a modem for connecting to McLaren HQ were all standard -- even in the mid-90s. Owners also received a Tag Heuer watch with their car's production number engraved on the face and a set of gold-plated titanium Facom tools in a full-sized rolling tool chest.
From 1994 to 1998, McLaren produced 107 total F1s, 65 of which were street cars sold to customers. Depending on the exchange rate between dollars and British pounds, the car cost about one cool million when it was new. In 1995, the F1 scored a victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and to commemorate the event McLaren built five LM edition F1s. These extremely rare cars have 691 hp, more downforce, improved handling, larger radiators, and a more open exhaust system.

The two volumes of Good Money concentrate on Hayek's work on money and monetary policy. Published in the centenary of his birth, these volumes bring forth some of the economist's most distinguished articles on monetary policy and offer another vital addition to the collection of Hayek's life work.
Good Money, Part I: The New World includes seven of Hayek's articles from the 1920s that were written largely in reaction to the work of Irving Fisher and W. C. Mitchell. Hayek encountered Fisher's work on the quantity theory of money and Mitchell's studies on business cycles during a U.S. visit in 1923-24. These articles attack the idea that price stabilization was consistent with the stabilization of foreign exchange and foreshadow Hayek's general critique that the whole of an economy is not simply the sum of its parts.
Good Money, Part II: The Standard offers five more of Hayek's articles that advance his ideas about money. In these essays, Hayek investigates the consequences of the "predicament of composition." This principle works on the premise that the entire society cannot simultaneously increase liquidity by selling property or services for cash. This analysis led Hayek to make what was perhaps his most controversial proposal: that governments should be denied a monopoly on the coining of money.
Taken together, these volumes present a comprehensive chronicle of Hayek's writings on monetary policy and offer readers an invaluable reference to some of his most profound thoughts about money.
"Each new addition to The Collected Works of F. A. Hayek, the University of Chicago's painstaking series of reissues and collections, is a gem."— Liberty on Volume IX of The Collected Works of F. A. Hayek
"Intellectually [Hayek] towers like a giant oak in a forest of saplings."—Chicago Tribune
"One of the great thinkers of our age who . . . revolutionized the world's intellectual and political life."—Former President George Herbert Walker Bush

Worth County Courthouse (Grant City MO)
Organized in February 1861, Worth County was the 114th and final county formed in Missouri.
The first county seat was Smithton but moved to Grant City, a more central location, two years later.
The first courthouse in Grant City was built in 1863 but was destroyed by fire in 1866. A wood frame courthouse replaced it but was dark, dirty, and poorly ventilated. Lack of public support for a new courthouse forced its use until replaced by the current courthouse in 1898.
The courthouse was closed in 1980 due to its poor condition and nearly condemned but Worth County citizens rallied and fortunately saved it.

Tableau Vivant
Meaning "Living Picture" in French, the term Tableau Vivant refers to a group of actors or models, carefully posed in an exceedingly theatrical fashion. Throughout the duration of the display, the people shown do not speak or move, effectively marrying the art forms of the stage with those of painting/photography.
The most recent heyday of the Tableau Vivant was the 19th Century with virtually nude Tableaux Vivants or "poses plastiques" providing a form of erotic entertainment. My fave bit :D
And certainly, this piece was a living picture within itself. It just grew and grew. What started out as an asymmetrical necklace somehow evolved into Tableau Vivant, my most elaborate cuff to date which can be worn on wrist as well as arm (see Image 2).
Thread and wire came together here, to embrace and enfold the following elements:-
>> HUGE Genuine Champagne Tahitian Pearl
>> Kenyan Pink Ruby with Diamond in 14K Solid Yellow Gold
>> Genuine Black Diamond Briolettes
>> Vintage Venetian Laces
>> Vintage Venetian Black Lace Appliques
>> Genuine Untreated Pinkish Red Burmese Ruby Rondelles
>> AAA Grade Spessartine Garnet Briolettes
>> Antique Victorian Satin Ribbons
>> Rare Ruby Moonstone Rondelles
>> AAA Pink Amethyst Rondelles
>> Peach Seed Pearls
>> 14K Gold Filled Seed Beads
>> 14K Gold Filled Chains
>> 14K Rose Gold Filled Wire (for frame)
>> 14K Yellow Gold Filled (for wrapping)
>> 156ft of wire (total)
Tableau Vivant best fits wrists that are no smaller than 5.5" otherwise it would have to be worn higher up, unless, of course, that is your intent :) it's totally adjustable and looks fabulous as an arm cuff too.
Lucy In The Sky With (Black) Diamonds
"Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" is a song written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney that was recorded by The Beatles for their 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. I tossed in the word Black since this confection of mine does contain Black Diamonds :)
According to the Beatles, one day in 1966 Lennon's son, Julian, came home from nursery school with a drawing he said was of his classmate, a girl named Lucy. Showing the artwork to his father, young Julian described the picture as "Lucy — in the sky with diamonds." And it sparked off the idea for a song. How sweet!

Incredible Steampunk necklace - Pisces fish with Aquamarine glass embellishments - 02
Pisces are known to be artistic and imaginative, and whether you’re a Pisces or not, this necklace will show off your creative style. A detailed brass fish flows perfectly along the curves of an antique 1940’s pocket watch case. The Aquamarine birthstone color goes perfectly with the brassy-gold color of metal. The two large Aquamarine glass stones are tapered, and beutifully cut with lots of shimmering facets. One of the Aquamarine teardrops dangles from a silver clasp below the watch case, and the other from the goldtone chain necklace. Both are clutched in delicate metal settings that match the pendant and chain. A faceted Aquamarine glass rhinestone is mounted with prongs, and is set into the center of an antique solid brass gear. Another small vintage glass rhinestone shimmers as the fish’s eye. A 100-year-old key that one opened the lock to a steamer trunk has found it’s way onto this elegant pendant as well.
A large metal lobster clasp is used to attach the necklace. The chain is nice and long, at 15”, but it can be made to double overshorten it to any length you’d like. The pendant , or I can measures 2” by 2”, and both of the dangling Aquamarine glass teardrops are ?” long.
17 Rubis
The label on the bottom of the face of my old pocket watch. It was a gift from my great uncle before he died many, many years ago. It looks golden, but I'm doubtful it actually is solid gold - probably just a cheaper version made to look like gold. According to its labels, it is an Anker 09 made by W. Eppler in Germany. I have no idea when it was made or what it might be worth (can't find an identical watch online anywhere) but I'm guessing my great uncle bought it in the 50s or 60s in Germany. It does show the traces of time and abuse - there's a chip on the front glass between the VI and VII - I'm wondering if it may be worth enough to get the glass replaced.
