You can feel them in the distance, pushing the air before them until there is no more air to push, and the calm that follows begets lightning that dances in the clouds, and raindrops that smell like grass. Home is not where you hang your hat. Although, you can make something that you can live in, and be happy, almost anywhere. I had not returned home for almost 20 years, and when I did, the familiar smells, the houses, people, the farms, and skies all told me to stay. My parents and relatives, and old friends all wonder if I will go back to stay. I don't know. I've built a good life here in Oregon. I had been uprooted so many times that I had to plant myself somewhere, and Oregon, by circumstance, fate, or design, happened to be the place. I had never intended to stay in Oregon, just to jump-start myself. After having been told by a high school acquaintance (during a conversation about moving to Oregon, which I was uncertain about), that I should stay because I was from PA, and I would always be from there, and I shouldn't try to be anything else, I made up my mind to leave. That world he spoke of seemed too small, and insular. So, I followed my then bride-to-be out West so that she could follow her dream. When that dream turned into heartbreak, and the pages of life grew dog-eared with misuse, I replanted myself into another family and plot of land here along Powell Boulevard. Life is good. Why mess with it? Still... This one was another difficult clean-up. The light leaks cost me half of the image, but I managed to keep the 6x9 proportions. Further plants to be added when they arrive in the next couple of days. There's a dozen+ fish in there, but they're shy and, I think, hiding behind the arch on the left. The tank and oak stand and canopy was 50 bucks, which is an insane deal. The gravel, filter replacements, and lights cost more than that. By a lot. At least the tank and stand was cheap. The new lighting fixture (this one buzzes and is about 1/8th as powerful as you need to really grow plants) gets here next week. It's not enough to have 1 monitor, or even 2, but 3 seems to be the optimum number for him! We bought him a flat screen monitor a couple of years ago for Christmas. Then, when our desktop computer died, he took our monitor so that he had a dual set up. Then, he saved his money and purchased a 3rd tv type monitor. He usually has the tv monitor hooked up to his PS3, and the other 2 as a dual set up on his desk but today he had all 3 there. I guess I'm of the wrong generation because I seem to be fine with one monitor that's attached to my laptop, although I have been known to connect to our tv so that I can get a larger sized view. Maybe his generation and mine are not that far apart after all. Austin was going into graphic design, then decided to take the summer and this fall quarter off to re evaluate. He's now thinking maybe he will pursue something in the field of computer's. What gave us the clue that this is an area of passion for him? Revelstoke Last Run Lingered a bit after the last lift closed in Revelstoke ski area to get an infrared shot at the sunset high up on the mountain. I put my Hoya R72 filter on the Tamron wide-angle lens. Then I put my camera on my not-so-steady plastic traveler tripod in the soft snow. But it worked :) Oh, and I couldn't unscrew the polarization filter on the lens. It was frozen steady. So that filter was also on. 150 sec exposure. n Explore Feb 22, 2011, highest at #70 100 5738 This was taken with my CX4300, which I opened up and placed developed yet unexposed transparency film in over the lens, creating a cheap infrared filter. I then pulled it into Microsoft Digital Image Pro 10 (also editted it with Gimp, but it's easier to do the necessary edits in DIP10) to balance the contrast. With gimp I also played with adding color, but decided against saving it as I didn't like how it came out.
