I forget the actual name of this church, but I passed it on bicycle many times on my way to the quarry when I was younger. Going back there in 2009 was like a time capsule. So much had changed, but so much had not. The "ways" of folks from PA are as solid as the stone they used to build their churches. Even though, we found a great coffeehouse in sleepy little Robesonia called Luke's Coffee (very friendly folks), and a wildly decorated one in Womelsldorf called "Crave," which would have fit right into Portland's Pearl District.

You never quite get over being a Pennsylvanian, even when you've lived in Oregon for 20 years, have traveled the world in the Army, and "lived" in more places than you care to remember. When you return, something deep within beckons. With every step you take across the soil, your roots sink deeper until one day you find that you can't move your feet anymore, and you have to stay. Even the smell of the Earth there awakens memories. On summer nights, fireflies waft over the fields, and the heat spawns thunderstorms by evening. You can feel them in the distance, pushing the air before them until there is no more air to push, and the calm that follows begets lightning that dances in the clouds, and raindrops that smell like grass. Home is not where you hang your hat. Although, you can make something that you can live in, and be happy, almost anywhere. I had not returned home for almost 20 years, and when I did, the familiar smells, the houses, people, the farms, and skies all told me to stay. My parents and relatives, and old friends all wonder if I will go back to stay. I don't know. I've built a good life here in Oregon. I had been uprooted so many times that I had to plant myself somewhere, and Oregon, by circumstance, fate, or design, happened to be the place.

I had never intended to stay in Oregon, just to jump-start myself. After having been told by a high school acquaintance (during a conversation about moving to Oregon, which I was uncertain about), that I should stay because I was from PA, and I would always be from there, and I shouldn't try to be anything else, I made up my mind to leave. That world he spoke of seemed too small, and insular. So, I followed my then bride-to-be out West so that she could follow her dream. When that dream turned into heartbreak, and the pages of life grew dog-eared with misuse, I replanted myself into another family and plot of land here along Powell Boulevard. Life is good. Why mess with it? Still...

This one was another difficult clean-up. The light leaks cost me half of the image, but I managed to keep the 6x9 proportions.

The motherwort tincture was made with leaves and flowering stems of wild motherwort in July. The burdock tincture was made with semi-dried fall roots of first year plants. Yellow dock was made with dried roots. Both root tinctures were done in November. All were macerated in 100 proof vodka, the roots for a full month, and then filtered through coffee filters. (The spent roots and strainer in the foreground are just for looks.)

Burdock root (Arctium lappa) has been described as alternative and a blood purifier. The burdock root was believed to clear toxins from the bloodstream.
