Carr also explores Davis' dark, reclusive period (1975-1980), offering firsthand accounts of his descent into addiction, as well as his dramatic return to life and music. June Lake Cabins

June Lake Cabins

We stayed at these cabins for several days, before moseying down 395. Nice cabins.

When we checked into our cabins it was so late about 8:30 PM, and we hadn't eaten dinner, so we asked the inn keeper if there was someplace still open, and had good food. Sure enough he knew just the restaurant, and off we drove to Carson Peak Inn, to their small restaurant.

When we arrived at the Carson Peak Inn and got seated, we noticed that our young, and charming waitress bore a STRONG family resemblance to the inn keeper at the cabins we were staying at...hmmm...as the inn keeper said "Carson Peak Inn, has the best food in town"...yeah, sure, what an unbaised opinion! If you like traditional American food (heavily meat based, potatoes, etc.), the food isn't too bad, really. But don't come here looking for the latest, low-calorie Asian-fusion cuisine! Even though the young waitress was probably the inn keeper's daughter, she was super-friendly, and super helpful, so we gave her a good tip.

Blueberry Muffin

Blueberry Muffin

Oliver + S does Blueberry Muffin! My cousin requested Strawberry Shortcake and Blueberry Muffin costumes for her daughters this year. This is my take on Blueberry Muffin based (perhaps loosely) on a combination of the doll and character drawings. Michael Miller clown check and Blue Kona Cotton. Smock and hat are from O+S Little Things to Sew. Bloomers are Simplicity 7189. Applique from ebay. The hat embroidery I found free online somewhere, though I modified it to add a second blueberry and then scaled it down. The photo isn't great...

Blueberry Muffin Murder (Wheeler Cozy Mystery)

Preparations are underway for Lake Eden, Minnesota's annual Winter Carnival - and Hannah Swensen is set to bake up a storm at her popular shop, The Cookie Jar. Too bad the honour of creating the official Winter Carnival cake went to famous lifestyle maven Connie Mac - a half-baked idea, in Hannah's opinion. She suspects Connie Mac is a lot like the confections she whips up on her cable TV cooking show - sweet, light, and scrumptious-looking, but likely to leave a bitter taste in your mouth.Hannah's suspicions are confirmed when Connie Mac's limo rolls into town. Turns out America's 'cooking sweetheart' is a bossy, bad-tempered, and downright domineering. Things finally boil over when Hannah arrives at The Cookie Jar to find the Winter Carnival cake burnt to a crisp - and Connie Mac lying dead in her pantry, struck down while eating one of Hannah's famous blueberry muffins.Next thing Hannah knows, the police have declared The Cookie Jar's kitchen crime scene off-limits. She's a baker without an oven - and the Carnival is right around the corner. Hannah's only alternative is to cook up a plan to save her business - by finding the killer herself.

Koko Black - Carlton

Koko Black - Carlton

For all of us who have ever felt a bit down on our luck, we all know that one of the best ways to pick ourselves up is with a little bit of help from something the Aztecs like to call gold. And what we know to be chocolate. And there is no better place to drown ones sorrows in rich, chocolately goodness than Koko Black.

Founded by Shane Hills in 2003, Koko Black is set apart from the San Churro’s and Starbucks of our time with its elegant attitude towards providing a satisfying customer service dripping in sweetness. Each restaurant is exquisitely designed in a uniform fashion featuring dark mahogany wood furnishings, tall shelves filled to the brim with chocolate books and take-away goodies, and the enticingly long line of truffles protected under the glass cabinet which is so conveniently positioned so that you can’t avoid it on your way into or out of the store.

The menu offers everything you could possibly imagine but there’s one condition: that thing must have chocolate in it. From cafe mochas to chocolate pecan tarts, you will be spoilt for choice (which, of course, is the reason you came here.) But don’t be tempted to try everything at once: Koko’s dishes are vehemently rich and as Julie Andrews once said, only a teaspoon of sugar helps the medicine go down, not the entire packet. Revel by all means in the gloriousness of Belgian Chocolate Mousse Martini, the devilish Chocolate Walnut Brownie and “Creamy hazelnut praline ice cream topped with bresillienne hazelnuts and a chocolate garnish” (straight from the menu that one) but be patient in trying the entire menu.

In my case, I was having a ridiculously shit day and decided that I would not only have the Chocolate Mocha Hot Chocolate but also the Belgian Spoil consisting of a chocolate
cake, two Belgian chocolates, a shortbread, chocolate ice cream and chocolate mousse. To say I was in chocolate heaven was an understatement. Not thinking about the ridiculous number of calories that I was probably about to add to my wasteline, I delicately selected each individual offering, first trying them on their own, then in combinations and then seeing what the whole bally-lot would taste like together.

The experience was amazing and Koko’s provides you with a 360 sensory perspective. The smell of the coffee machine; the smooth sounds of French music played over the soundsystem; the numerous sights within the shop from the chocolatiers making their daily wares to the decorations; the tangible sensation as your fingertips swirl across the surface of the plate to grab any crumbs; and finally, that indescribable, spellbinding, speechless explosion of taste that enters your mouth with each bite.

Needless to say, I left Koko’s in a much better mood and encourage any of you who are having a bad day or just want some time alone to smell the chocolate roses, to take a trip to Koko Black.

Location: Koko Black is situated in numerous locations around Australia, their most recent store appearing in the Claremont Quarter in Perth. For Melbournians, try the Carlton salon or Collins St for convenience and style.

La Digue, a tiny island in the Seychelles, is probably one of the most beautiful places on earth. So, obviously, I completely ignored that and took a picture of myself instead (well, my girl-friend did).

Come on, in front of a back-drop like this, wouldn't you wish to be the representative model for some sort of bottled drinking water brand?

I know, I should have poured that water into my mouth instead, but the water inside the bottle was actually frozen, and it was early in the day, so that just didn't work out ...

By the way, the island in the background is Praslin, the second biggest island of the Seychelles, and trust me, it's tiny!

Fried: Why You Burn Out and How to Revive

This Is an Invitation to Take Your Power Back!

What happened to the spark you had as a child that powered curiosity, engagement with life, and creativity? Has it burned out? Are you feeling emotionally and physically exhausted and cynical, wondering if you’ve got what it takes to make it in this rapidly changing world? Burnout looks a lot like depression, but it’s not a biological bogeyman that medication or simple stress management can cure. It’s a disorder of hope and will that sucks the life out of competent, idealistic, hardworking people like you; and it will be an ongoing challenge for you to take your power back!
In this breakthrough work, Joan Borysenko, Ph.D.—a Harvard-trained medical scientist, psychologist, and renowned pioneer in stress and health—straddles psychology, biology, and soul in a completely fresh approach to burnout. Joan’s deeply human (and often amusing) personal accounts of burnout and recovery; the science of helplessness, hopelessness, and empowerment; and the rich wisdom of people who have gone from fried to revived—including many of Joan’s vibrant community of 5,000 Facebook Friends—make this powerful and practical book a must-read for our times.

While out and doing a few errands i decided to stop for a few Hamburgers in McDonald's in North Attleboro Ma.

I had three hamburgers, a medium fry and drink and it was tasty.

Info:

A hamburger (or burger for short) is a sandwich consisting of a cooked patty of ground meat, (usually beef, but occasionally pork, turkey, or a combination of meats) placed between two buns. Hamburgers are often served with lettuce, bacon, tomato, onion, pickles, cheese and condiments such as mustard, mayonnaise, ketchup and relish. The hamburger has attained widespread popularity and is proliferated worldwide in chains such as McDonald's or Burger King.

How to Eat Fried Worms

Because of a bet, Billy is in the uncomfortable position of having to eat fifteen worms in fifteen days. The worms are supplied by his opponent, whose motto is "The bigger and juicier, the better!" At first Billy's problem is whether or not he can swallow the worm placed before him, even with a choice of condiments from peanut butter to horseradish. But later it looks as if Billy will win, and the challenge becomes getting to the worm to eat it. Billy's family, after checking with the doctor, takes everything in stride. They even help Billy through his gastronomic ordeal, which twists and turns with each new day, leaving the outcome of the bet continually in doubt.

From the Paperback edition.

How to Eat Fried Worms has happily repulsed children since its original publication in 1973. Now youngsters can experience this classic story in a whole new yucky way, by listening to it on audiocassette. Narrator Jay O. Sanders gives extra kick and vitality to this already lively yarn. He throws himself into the role of a 10-year-old boy, facing the most revolting bet of his life. Billy must eat 15 worms in 15 days--but the reward will be worth it: $50 for a shiny new minibike. Luckily, Billy's friends cook up these fat juicy grubs in a variety of appetizing ways--drenched in ketchup and mustard, fried in butter and cornmeal, and the piece de resistance, a Whizband Worm Delight (an ice-cream worm cake). Sanders derives obvious pleasure from reading (and singing) out loud the hilarious rhymes and childish chants concocted from the mind of the book's author, Thomas Rockwell.
"Trout, Salmon, flounder, perch,
I'll ride my minibike into church.
Dace, tuna, haddock, trout,
Wait'll you hear the minister shout."
How to Eat Fried Worms is a ghastly gastronomical treat that will dazzle young listeners. (Running time: two hours, two cassettes) --Naomi Gesinger

the length of this is why it took getting 20 of these tagged emails before i got so tired of seeing them that i caved...

1 – Totally obsessive. Anything I that I like, be it a book, a movie, a performer, a hobby, a relationship, a job, I throw myself into it with full force. I prefer to think of it as passionate rather than obsessive. ;-)

2 – I have two favorite things to do in this life – sleep, and take scalding hot showers. Often, when I wake up from a long sleep, and immediately jump into a really warm shower, I think of how ideally, I could combine the two. I want someone to build me a bathtub that stays really warm all the time, that I could somehow sleep in without drowning.

3 – Somehow managed to lose most of the close friends I’ve made over the course of my life. It makes me sad regularly, but not so sad that I have trouble living my life. Mostly, I blame the loss on them. I feel like I’m still the exact same person I was at 8, 13, or 18… it’s everyone else that’s changed. But, maybe they’re the normal ones… and I’m not?

4 – Which brings us to, I’ve always felt like a total outsider in the world -- convinced that I don’t think or feel about things the way that others do... But, I’ve also always secretly thought that I’m just better and smarter than the rest of those people.

5 – I’ve seen over 1500 theatrical productions in my life. I cannot fathom how anyone could not be spellbound by live theater. I wish I had some sort of talent… but, I don’t. I’ve come to accept that though, and now I’m just happy that I found theater and made a place for it in my life. It bugs me that crappy movie actors make 20 million dollars for their shit work in shit movies… I could name 50 performers that could act them into the ground any day of the week… while singing and dancing.

6 – The show I’ve seen most in my life was the Twyla Tharp/Billy Joel ballet ‘Movin Out’ – I saw it 150 times over 3 years and I was never, ever, for one second, bored at a performance. Were it still running, I’m pretty sure I’d still be seeing it on a weekly basis. I’ve seen ‘Movin Out’ in NYC, Atlantic City, Philadelphia, Hartford, Providence, Boston, Hershey, DC, Baltimore, Toronto, Newark… and possibly some other places I can’t remember right now.

6 – Because of my varying degrees of obsessiveness, I have seriously massive debt. The kind that should keep a person up at night. I once dug my way out of it, only to do it all over again. For some reason, I don’t worry about it all that much… but, I should.

7 – I’ve never felt a great desire to live anywhere other than where I live right now. This, doubtless, makes me strange. I don’t mind my family. When they bother me, I ignore them. So, I didn’t go away to college, and, I didn’t move out. But, if someone wants to buy me 1.5 million dollar apartment in Manhattan (and give me a parking space for my car), I’ll pack my bags in an instant.

8 – Identified, years and years ago, while still quite young, the two qualities that I find sexiest in a guy: accent (preferably British or Scottish) and piano playing ability. In later years, this was also, without my knowledge at first, and certainly without my free will, amended to include homosexuality. Yep, the guys I find most attractive… are not in any way into girls.

9 – Never liked pets until I saw the face of a cavalier king charles spaniel pup. Didn’t particularly care for the dog I had for 17 years while growing up… but, really care for the dog I have now. That said, I am not a good pet owner. I like talking to my dog and taking pictures of him and playing sometimes… but, if I lived alone, I wouldn’t have a dog. I’m too irresponsible. I wouldn’t get up off my ass to walk or feed a dog. I tend to leave the responsibility part to other people 90% of the time.

10 – Which bring us to children. Could never have them. There is absolutely no way in heaven or hell that I’d ever devote that much time and effort to a being that wasn’t myself. Jesus, the more and more I write this, the worse a person I sound like.

11 – Writing the statement above secretly makes me nervous. Not because I think I do, deep down, want a kid… I don’t. But, I fear that when I’m really old, no one will be around to take care of me. The idea of being old and alone doesn’t bother me, I can entertain myself. But, the idea of being old and incapacitated bothers me… especially since there are suddenly a bunch of incapacitated grandparents around me.

12 – In addition to theater, I am really really passionate about music and films. But, I’ve never really found another person who likes exactly the same kind that I do… My sister would come the closest… and, I guess that’s close enough.

13 – Even though we fight all the time, sometimes even physically (at our age!), my sister is definitely my bestest friend. We always make each other laugh. We’ve spent nearly every moment of our lives together and so no one else in this world knows me as well!

14 – Current obsession embarrasses me to no end. Yep, the Twlight crap. I totally and completely consider m

Oscar: 1991–2007

Oscar: 1991–2007

We put Oscar in the earth today.

Despite the name, Oscar was a girl, and every inch a princess. Gwen tells the story of when she first got her. Gwen was living in Minneapolis, and the mother cat's owners (who called Oscar "Whiner"), brought her over to Gwen's place. Oscar was the runt of the litter, but as soon as she was released in Gwen's apartment, she walked around the room, sniffed everything, jumped up on a table, knocked something over, and then came over to Gwen, got up on her hind legs, and gave Gwen an affectionate head-butt. This was her most endearing habit, and often used in the years that followed to defuse anger at, say, knocking something over. In that moment, Oscar became Gwen's cat.

A year or so later, Gwen moved to Austin, and moved around in Austin quite a bit after that. Oscar was her one constant companion. She added another cat, Kevin, to her household, and when Gwen and I got together, we wound up with three cats between us. Hence the king-sized bed.

Oscar had been a svelte 17 pounds in her prime, but once she hit a certain age, she started losing weight, and her kidneys started shutting down. Ironically, the weight loss made it easier for Oscar to get into trouble, which she did, jumping up to places she couldn't reach when she was heavier but younger. She often found ways of getting into trouble specifically to push our buttons, to let us know it was time for a snack or something. As infuriating as she could be in these moments, she always made us laugh (either at her or ourselves) because her needling was so transparent, and yet so effective.

Over the past four days or so, she lost interest in eating (apart from barbecued chicken from Hoover's) and became much quieter. Gwen took her to the vet and found that her blood urea nitrogen level (an indicator of kidney function) was off the scale. The vet said Oscar had "days or weeks."

With much grief and second-guessing, we made the decision to euthanize her, and this afternoon, after a snack of barbecued chicken, the vet came over and ended her life. We are both wrecked.

It's a hell of a thing, having pets. You take them in as cute companions, knowing in the back of your mind that some day, a day like this will arrive. And when it happens, you're completely unprepared.

(from Gwen) It's impossible to sum up a life together in a few paragraphs. Oscar has slept by my side (or, more often, on my pillow) for 16 years. She's made me laugh, pissed me off, purred in my ear at 5 a.m., and today licked my tears while we were hanging out together for her last few hours. I hope I can always remember the smell of her head, in the sweet soft spot between her ears that tickled my nose at the beginning of endearing-for-life head-butt. And I hope her cat friend Kevin, who has always been "Kevin and Oscar" will find some way to be Kevin. Rest well, Oscar. Piggy. Pig Pig. Muffin. Pig-a-Muff. Muffy. Muff Muff. Schmooky. Schmook.

THE PARADIGM DIET

THE PARADIGM DIET

THE PARADIGM DIETis a short, simple to read manual of applied nutrition for everyone - young, old, parents, and teens. With candor and humor, author Adam Dave, M.D., dispels dietary myths while providing the reader with the principles of proper nutrition. Next, from the premise that the ideal (Paradigm) diet, should have six characteristics - maximally nutritious; innately delicious; available and affordable; properly prepared; environmentally friendly; unrefined, unprocessed, and whole - Dr. Dave proves beyond any doubt the healthiest diet on the planet, which is at once time-honored, newly rediscovered, and backed by scientific research. Finally, THE PARADIGM DIET proposes a practical means of implementing the perfect diet that is easy, efficient, affordable, and fun for one and all. If your wish is to lose weight, reduce cravings, increase fitness and muscle tone, make better food choices, eliminate allergies, decrease medication requirements, overcome addiction, or raise healthier kids, THE PARADIGM DIET is for you.

THE PARADIGM DIET is an easy and enjoyable read, so that you may incorporate its principles at once - at the market, in the kitchen, and at your next meal – to nourish yourself and those you love, with results that are both rapid and permanent. Once you have perused its pages, you will know more about nutrition than many medical doctors, and be able to cook healthier meals than most 5-star chefs.

"Health is more than merely the absence of disease. It is vitality, wholeness and harmony of the body, mind, and soul. The food you eat transforms itself into the cells that shape your body, power your heart, transmit brain waves, and modulate your mood. As diet influences how we look, think, and feel - in short, who we are - it is truly the doorway to health. From wise culinary choices flows improved energy leading to increased physical activity, which sharpens mental clarity, elevates consciousness, even enhances your capacity to feel. Harmony of body, mind, and soul, starting with good food.

Diet is the doorway to this harmony, and you hold the key."

Governor’s 2010 Summit on Health, Nutrition and Obesity

Zeph Lee, PE specialist for LA Unified School District, asks former president Bill Clinton a question at the Governor’s 2010 Summit on Health, Nutrition and Obesity in Los Angeles. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger outlined his plan for fighting childhood obesity and encouraging Californians to live a healthy, active lifestyle through “health in all policies.” The event brought together a cross-section of public health, education, community and local government leaders from around the state. Several related measures supported by the Governor are before the state legislature, including a requirement for schools to make fresh, free drinking water available in food service areas, phase out all sports drinks in public school by 2011, set new requirements for the amount of physical exertion PR classes and joint community use of school's fields and sports facilities. The summit comes after many years of groundwork laid by organizations such as the California Endowment and on the heels of First Lady Michelle Obama's unveiling of "Let's Move," a national campaign to to make healthy food more accessible and affordable, and to encourage children to exercise more.

One Square Mile of Hell: The Battle for Tarawa

In the Tarawa atoll lies the tiny islet of Betio. In November of 1943, the men of the 2nd Marine Division watched as bombardments destroyed the island's Japanese defenses. But when the Marines landed, the Japanese poured out of their protective bunkers and began one of the most brutal encounters of the war.

Drawn from sources such as participants' letters and diaries and interviews with survivors, One Square Mile of Hell is the riveting true account of a battle between two determined foes, neither of whom would ever look at each other in the same way again.

The Path: A One-Mile Walk Through the Universe

For nearly forty years, Chet Raymo has walked a one-mile path from his house in North Easton, Massachusetts, to the Stonehill College campus where he has taught physics and astronomy. The woods, meadows, and stream he passes are as familiar to him as his own backyard, yet each day he finds something new. "Every pebble and wildflower has a story to tell," Raymo says.

In The Path, Raymo chronicles the universe he has found by closely observing every detail of his route. He connects the local to the global, the microscopic to the galactic, with a scientists's curiosity, a historian's respect for the past, a child's capacity for wonder. With each step, the landscape he traverses becomes richer and more multidimensional, opening door after door into astromnomy, geology, biology, history, and literaure.

"The flake of granite in the path was once at the core of towering mountains pushed up across New England when continents collided," he writes. "The purple loosestrife beside the stream emigrated from Europe in the 1800s as a garden ornamental, then went wantonly native in a land of wild frontiers. The light from the star Arcturus I see reflected in the brook beneath the bridge at night has been traveling across space for forty years before entering my eye. I have attended to all of these stories and tried to hear what the landscape has to say .... I have attended, too, to language. How did the wood anemone and Sheep Pasture get their names? What does the queset of Queset Brook signify in the language of Native Americans? Scratch a name in a landscape, and history bubbles up like a spring."

The path also reveals the stories of nineteenth-century industrialists who transformed natural resources into power, and turn-of-the-century landscape architects, such as Frederick Law Olmsted, who championed an ideal of nature tamed by conscious intent. In its transformations over the centuries, Raymo writes, the path "encapsulates in many surprising ways the history of our nation and of our fickle love affair with the natural world."

Recognizing that his path is commonplace, and that we all have such routes in our lives, Raymo urges us to walk attentively, stopping often to watch and listen with care. His wisdom and insights inspire us to turn local paths-- whether through cities, suburbs, or rural areas-- into doorways to greater understanding of nature and history.
