I enjoyed a rewarding 12 mile hike to one of my favorite places in the Smokies, Mt LeConte. This was more of a personal journey up the mountain than a photo hike although I carried all 26 lbs of my gear. I have been thinking about the end of this project, the last shot, and about my weight loss journey as well. About a week ago I quietly reached my goal weight of 185 lbs. I had thought about this being the day 365 shot but thought it was more appropriate for today. The only images I took today were self portraits and by my calculations I burned 2000 calories on the 6 hour 12 mile hike so I am celebrating tonight with a guilt free pizza. One of the other things I like doing every year is buying the Mt LeConte T-shirt that can only be purchased at the lodge atop Mt LeConte. Kristi, my wife, always wears these shirts and I tell her that the shirt should only be worn by someone who has earned it by hiking to the summit, as she continues to put it on she mumbles something about being married to me is justification enough. Speaking of my lovely wife, she told me “no rock ledges and no cliffs”. I guess she didn’t realize that the last 2.6 miles of this trail is all cliffs and rock ledges, she was not happy with this series of portraits.
