First Ladies' Gowns Barbara Jean Lunsford Pryor, Wife of David Hampton Pryor, 39th Governor (1975-1979): Barbara Pryor wore an emerald green, floor-length gown of silk chiffon with shoes dyed to match to the inaugural ball. The shirred bodice features a deep V-neck in both the front and back. The bishop sleeves are sheer and cuffed at the wrist. The full skirt is gathered in a waistline that is higher in the front and lower in the back. A green satin ribbon tied in a bow accents the waist. The dress, designed by the House of Richilene in New York, gives a bell-shaped silhouette. Celia Alta Haskins Faubus, Wife of Orval Eugene Faubus, 36th Governor (1955-1967): Mrs. Faubus wore a floor length, white satin gown to the inaugural ball. The fitted camisole-style bodice features wide shoulder straps and extends below the waistline. A tucked-satin insert yields an empire effect. Black thread embroiders the bodice and it is encrusted with pearls and rhinestones. A bell shaped skirt gives the effect of an hourglass silhouette. White kid sandals with pearl buckles, formal length white kid gloves, and a rhinestone necklace and earrings complete the ensemble. Margaret Frierson Cherry, Wife of Francis Adams Cherry, 35th Governor (1953-1955): Mrs. Cherry wore a strapless inaugural gown from the Helen of Memphis Shop in Memphis, Tennessee. Shirred netting accents the top of the dress while the skirt and lower bodice are embroidered with sequins. The bell-shaped skirt is made of double nylon net. She wore a stole of white nylon net, a whited beaded evening bag trimmed with rhinestones, a white lace evening handkerchief with sequins and white kid opera gloves with the gown. Sarah Anne Phillips McMath, Wife of Sidney Sanders McMath, 34th Governor (1949-1953): Mrs. McMath wore a sleeveless inaugural gown of black velvet with a matching floor-length cape. The fitted bodice is embellished with silver braid and rhinestones and a shirred panel encircles the waist. The circular, floor-length skirt has a train and a soft bustle that is accented by a velvet bow. The ensemble was purchased from Elanor Harris in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Estelle Elise Smith Adkins, Wife of Homer Martin Adkins, 32nd Governor (1941-1945): Mrs. Adkins wore a floor-length, pink silk crepe and lace inaugural gown. The bodice features a V neckline and a dropped waistline in back that rises to a point in the front. The long sleeves fit snuggly. The bell shaped overskirt is made of rose point lace over net. White satin shoes, white kid formal gloves, a pink georgette evening handkerchief and a pearl necklace were worn with the dress.
