1891-CC $10.00 NGC MS62 CAC Mintage: 103,732 The 1891-CC is far and away the most available eagle produced at the Carson City mint. It is also the best made eagle from Carson City. These two factors combine to make the 1891-CC the perfect type coin for the collector seeking a single choice example of this denomination/mint combination. This issue is available enough in MS62 that I would only purchase a piece that was very high end. This piece is really a choice coin with blazing mint luster, lovely rich orange-gold and rose color and an overall vibrancy that is not typically seen on a Carson City gold coin. I think MS62 is a real "sweet spot" for this issue as you are getting a nice looking, really "new" coin but you are not paying an arm and a leg for it. Trends in MS63 jumps, making MS62 an ideal grade for the collector. 1879-CC $10.00 NGC AU58 Mintage: 1,762 As recently as a decade ago, the 1879-CC was considered to be one of the key Carson City gold issues. In fact, it was probably given higher regard than any gold issue not dated 1870-CC. This had to do primarily with the fact that its mintage is the single lowest figure for any gold coin ever struck at this popular mint. Today, we know that the 1870-CC is the rarest eagle. But I feel that the 1879-CC is the second rarest in terms of overall number known and it is very undervalued in relation to issues such as the 1872-CC, 1873-CC and 1878-CC. Until an Uncirculated example turned up a few years ago, the 1879-CC was unknown in Uncirculated and it remains unique in Mint State. As per tradition, the bride should ideally wear the chooda for at least a year. Nowadays the bride wears the chooda for a month and a quarter. The bangles range in size according to the circumference of the top of the forearm and the wrist end so that the set fits neatly. For the bride's mother and father the maternal uncle gets gifts - nanke chaak. As a symbol of best wishes and blessings, the sisters, sister-in-law and friends tie kaleeras made of thin silver and plated with gold on an iron bangle worn by the girl. Over the years, the expensive ivory has been replaced by lac and plastic but the custom continues. The bride wears these bangles for a period of three to six months and as long as the bangles are on she is generally pampered as the new bride and not given and kitchen duties to perform. It's ENORMOUS - and I fell in love with it I guess almost four years ago. A framed version sits on my desk at work. ----------- Although he'd been to soirees in "Paree" and New York's Stork Club, American artist and muralist Thomas Hart Benton played a harmonica and reveled in his self-honed image as a hard-drinking hillbilly. Detractors, both past and present, dismissed Benton's art as "Okie baroque", while supporters praised his efforts to paint realistic images based on American subject matter. During Benton's long life (1889-1975), he constantly moved people to tears -- tears of rage as well as love. "We have the struggle of any artist laid bare before us -- its promise and its failures," says filmmaker Ken Burns, who considers Benton "a perfect mirror of the American character," warts and all. On the "good side" were ambition, talent and skill. "But he was also seduced by fame and attracted by attention." Burns was intrigued by the ironies in Benton's life. For example, his most famous student was Jackson Pollock, whose abstract expressionist paintings are the antithesis, almost an affront, to Benton's own work. He was also a Midwesterner and proud of it, but fled East and overseas to develop a style which his best known for celebrating rural America. As for Benton himself, Burns's film points out that he was a sophisticate who pretended to be simple. "If nothing else," says Burns, "Thomas Hart Benton is a hell of a good story." Born in Neosho, Missouri, Benton was the product of a prodigiously unhappy marriage. Art was far from what his father, Colonel Maecenas Benton, had in mind for his son, whom he shipped of to military school. The elder Benton couldn't have been a more inappropriate mate for Benton's beautiful, artistically-inclined mother, Elizabeth. The Colonel was a rough-hewn politician, four times elected to Congress and known as the "little giant of the Ozarks." Maecenas even bestowed the name of his famous uncle -- the champion of Manifest Destiny, Senator Thomas Hart Benton -- upon his son. But according to Benton's sister, Mildred Small, it was her mother who supported Tom both financially and emotionally until he married at age 33. Although the Colonel wanted his son to become a lawyer and politician like himself, Small recalls that it was her mother who eventually prevailed and Tom was sent to the Chicago Art Institute. "My mother was a great power in his growing up," she says. Benton then went on to Paris and, finally, to New York, where he persevered as an impoverished painter for more than a decade but found his "regionalist" roots. Benton was at war with the Eastern art establishment from the moment he hit his stride as a determinedly realistic painter. At a time when revolutionary art forms were flourishing, Benton was working on huge murals and audacious paintings that reflected raw American life, some of it historical, mostly of ordinary folk caught in the throes of hard work. "Benton was driven out of New York," says Henry Adams, curator of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri, which mounted a traveling centennial retrospective of Benton's work in 1989. According to Adams, the painter had alienated both the left-leaning community of artists with his disregard for politics and the larger New York-Paris art world with what was considered his folksy style. He returned to Missouri. While not all critics agree on Benton's work today, he has his champions, Adams among them. "I would rank him very high as an American artist," says Adams. The power and glory are in the explicit Americana of Benton's crowded murals, which Adams describes as "extraordinarily exciting visually." The murals are packed with complexity and energy. Many have been moved from their original locations but are still accessible. America Today, nine panels painted in 1929 for the walls of a boardroom at the New School for Social Research in New York City's Greenwich Village, is now uptown in the atrium of the Equitable Tower at Equitable Center. Still in place are the autobiographical murals Benton painted in the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City in 1935. That commission, and the job as head of the painting department at the Kansas City Art Institute, brought Benton, and his intensely loyal wife, Rita, back to the state where he was born. Mildred Small remembers Rita Benton's caveat: "I'll go, if you promise never to ask your mother to go there." The elder Mrs. Benton already was a summer neighbor of theirs on Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, where Tom and Rita spent every summer for 50 years. You also have to keep one eye on the sky, in case a clear patch in the sky appears, and Aurora shows you its magic. Now, I know it is not very likely, but remember, you are in Iceland and it is very possible. In the morning you are not to feel tired, or wait for somehing like golden hour. As soon as the rain stops, you jump out and go and look for compositions and take pictures. Weather will turn in no time, and then you wish you made the effort as you only have about 30 minutes of no rain. In Iceland, no rain is your golden moment. Should weather suddenly improve and sun and blue skies make a guest appearance, you are not to stay in one place. You have to aim to take pictures from two different places. I mean different locations, not two different views. And this is the recipe, behind this capture. Five minutes later, the heavens opened. Again. Looks like the Gods like to keep the waterfall levels topped up :-) And why waterfall of the Gods? Well icelanders have been practising Paganism and when they decided to accept Chritianity as their religion (due to danish king pushing for it), their chieftain that was called Gunnar Gunnarson threw wooden images of the Pagan gods into the waterfall. But, last month, Shane and I were wandering around Co.Donegal and we stopped in at Inch Island Bird reserve. On the walk back to the car I started really looking at what seemed hundreds of varieties of thistles and I thought wow, as most of them had spider webs covering them and they were covered in droplets. Couldn't get onto the set as it was closed so instead I went to the cliff top. This area is owned by the National Trust which we are members of so I had a prime view.
