Bottom of Burr Trail switchbacks

Bottom of Burr Trail switchbacks

Near the bottom of the switchback section to the dirt portion of the Burr Trail Road, I take a photo of my wife sneaking an early morning chocolate bar, while I'm running about with my camera.

My wife and I left our home at 4 pm 17 April 2009 and pretty much drove straight through (19 hours) to a 5 tent site, remote camping spot along the east edge of Capitol Reef National Park in Utah. We traveled in our 1994 Toyota four wheel drive pickup with a cab high canopy; a nice mattress bed in the back; and all our travel, hiking, and backpacking gear “roughly organized” and stored in either the back of the pickup or in the extended cab section of the truck.

When I tired, either my wife drove, or if we were both tired, we pulled into a place where we could both catch a little sleep. The pace was steady, persistent, but not rushed. The highlight of the drive down was Utah highway 72 up over the aspen laden high hills between I-70 and the tiny town of Loa. It was spectacular scenery; it had just become light and most important, we had never traveled this nice little section of road before.

Saturday 18 April 2009
We stopped at the Capitol Reef National Park visitors’ center for some information on Cedar Mesa camp and for me to cheerfully purchase my $10 LIFETIME America the Beautiful pass (one of the benefits of being an “oldmantravels”). The lady ranger, who gleefully sold me the pass, smiled when she said, that the pass would expire, when I do.

We stopped often to take photos as we worked our way down the Burr Trail Road south of Notom, Utah to our campsite. We were pleased with what we found. Juniper trees for shade; knock out view of the snow covered Henry Mountains; trailhead to Red Canyon right next to us; and a picnic table; fire pit; and nearby outhouse - - for all the amenities of camping you could want. Most of all it was quiet and uncrowded.

We arrived at camp near mid-day so we ate and organized our camp. I put up our Siltarp so I could sit in my folding camp chair in the shade. My wife loves to sit in the sun and I have always preferred the shade. Soon, we had the camp ready to our liking so we shouldered our day packs, and headed out for a five mile (with side scrambles) hike, up into scenic “Red Canyon”.

A swarm of gnats attacked us at camp, when we returned to camp so we took a short hike across the road until the combination of increased wind and decreased temperatures, removed our tormentors. We slept well in our truck canopy bed that night, though it got so cold that our water bottles in the cab of the truck, froze.

Sunday 19 April 2009
After a great night’s sleep, we fixed breakfast and repacked the truck to a bright sunny, if cool, desert morning. After leaving Cedar Mesa Camp, we turned south and drove along the capitol reef to the intersection of the Burr Trail leading up over the reef and through nice canyon country to Boulder, Utah.

We stopped frequently along this scenic road to take short scrambling hikes to viewpoints, wildflowers, or just for the fun of it through the slickrock country (always with camera at ready).

At the top of the switchback road up to the top of the reef we turned north on a four wheel drive road to visit “Peek-a-boo” rock and walk some of the washes in the area. An ice chest full of cold diet Pepsi, was always handy back at our pickup truck, and appreciated.

We stopped along a short, sweet, steep, narrow canyon along the paved portion of the Burr Trail and I took a fast hike to the headwall, to get a few photos. It was here, that I had my first, of many, “raven” encounters we would have during this trip. The raven became the “colophon, hallmark, and icon” for this road trip.

Before leaving home a good flickr friend of mine (petalouda62) from Belgium, had recommended a book for me. I bought it and saved it to read on this trip, which I did, every chance I got, when we weren’t hiking. The book: Mind of the Raven by Bernd Heinrich. I thought I knew quite a bit about these highly intelligent, often mischievous, and often aloof birds - - but I would find in the book both entertainment and interesting information on these “wolf-birds”.

So deep in this short dead end sandstone canyon, I heard the constant calling, echoing back and forth down the canyon. As soon as I left the canyon and turned to take a few more photos of it - - silently down and out of the canyon, glided the resident raven. It was one of many magic moments on this trip, involving Corvus corax. Thank you Roberta.

We reached highway 12 at Boulder, Utah and drove on to Escalante, where we had a motel room reserved for Sunday and Monday nights (Circle “D”). Robert is the live in manager of the friendly little Escalante, Utah motel, and it is where we always try to stay when in the area.

Dinner at Escalante Outfitters, and a visit to the Escalante visitors’ center, completed our fun second full day of this road trip.

The Merry Widow (Curtis Bernhardt, 1952)

The Merry Widow (Curtis Bernhardt, 1952)

Franz Lehar's "The Merry Widow," which is certainly the most familiar and durable of all the so-called Viennese operettas that celebrated Continental high life and gaiety at the century's turn, has been mounted in a production that is probably the most colorful and exquisite it has ever had in the new M-G-M version of it that came to Loew's State yesterday. And a new actor named Fernando Lamas is brought forth in this sumptuous display as one of the niftiest Count Danilos that has ever given the widow a merry whirl.
This paramount notice of production and of the gentleman who plays the role of the handsome Marshovian suitor to the wealthy widow in disguise is not in the least intended to slight the other merits of the film, including some spirited singing and dancing to the lyrical old Lehar tunes. Nor is it remotely calculated to overlook the magnificence, at least, of a beautifully got-up Lana Turner in the romantic title role.
But the brilliance in Technicolor of the palaces, grand hotels and a replica of Maxim's in Paris that the craftsmen at Metro have contrived is something—we say this in wonder—to take your breath away, and the richness of the costumes and the staging of dance and choral groups will deal the knockout blow. No "Widow" in our recollection—and we've seen quite a few on stage and screen, including the memorable Ernst Lubitsch version—has been turned out as this one is.
What's more, Mr. Lamas' performance of the dashing and lady-killing count is sufficiently suave and commanding to convince one that maybe he is. Appropriately tall, dark and handsome, this gent from the Argentine—at least, that's the origin they give him—is something for the ladies to see. And he (or his synchronized voice ghost) has a battery of vocal chords that send out delightful virbations when—as happens quite often—he sings. This and the general production give an elegance and grace to such rich airs as "Vilia," "I'm Going to Maxim's," "Night" and the lyrical "Girls, Girls, Girls," and Mr. Lamas, in duet with Miss Turner (or with her synchronized voice ghost, too), makes something very pleasing and nostalgic of the familiar title song.
As for Miss Turner's performance, it is adequate to the role, Sonya Levien and William Ludwig have carefully rewritten for her, which is that of a beautiful American lady, widow of an ex-Marshovian millionaire, who returns to the natal country of her husband and there meets the handsome count. Considerate of Miss Turner's talents, they have only called upon her to do such things as be interested, haughty and wear superb costumes, including an assortment of lacy step-ins that generously reveal her legs. And the consequence is that the action in which she appears is not as brittle and crisp as it might be, but Director Curtis Bernhardt gives it an air of dignified elegance, at least.
As for the rest of the actors—Richard Haydn, as a nasal diplomat; Una Merkel, as a twittery lady's servant; Thomas Gomez, as a swarth, bull-headed king, and John Abbott, as a bleary-eyed ambassador—he gets amusing performances from them, and the dancers and the choruses are handled with dash and verve by Jack Cole.
You'll look far to see anything more lusty and gusty in this line than the swish of the can-can dancers, in brilliant black and red, at Maxim's—or anything more handsome and graceful, with the nice play of lights and shades, than the pink, white and gold waltzing couples in the final number.
"The Merry Widow" never had it so good.

THE MERRY WIDOW, screen play by Sonya Levien and William Ludwig, based on the operetta by Franz Lehar, Victor Leon and Leo Stein; directed by Curtis Bernhardt; produced by Joe Pasternak for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. At Loew's State.

antique ceiling fixture mid-century vintage glass shade (1) - Copy

Nicely designed antique ceiling fixture with a look towards mid-century design. The rings in the clear sections of the vintage glass shade, both bottom and sides, were designed to disperse the light to the corners of the room, while the milk glass portions of the shade sheils the eyes from the harshness of the light bulb. With the vintage white porcelain fitter, this antique fixture will go smoothly into almost any vintage room decor.

Another Holga shot. The light in our house during the golden hour is lovely. The whole front part of our house is french doors like this. Four in a row. Only one of them opens though ... hm. Either way, looking out to the courtyard-ish area with all the trees and brick really makes me happy. There are all kinds of things wrong with our current home, but I will definitely miss this when we move.

Wacky double-exposure version in the comments. :)

Memories From a Box

Memories From a Box

A set of memories within two broken covers
Cathedral towers in black and white
Cast iron symbol of a proud nation
White stone church on highest hill
Glass covered pleasure as views glide by
Artists at work under shady trees
Cobbles underfoot in a textured square

The dome of a hero above a granite tomb
A triumphal arch, and a grand avenue
Expo architecture, symmetry in stone
An old friend, probably a flame
A house in a suburb a garden to tame
Grand images of the city at night
Alive and with moving lines of light

A Collection of friends, now forgotten
Different journeys paths that part
Famous bridges over a rivers ring
Views from a hotel window and different string
Art card postcards to make you think
Sepia photos of a place once loved
Famous rock stars their tracks recalled
A pebble beach is not ignored
A school photo in gold trim frame
VW camper van broken down again

Stark picture of a 60’s tower,
A crane against a cloudy sky
Silhouette, a winter tree on a lonely hill
An abstract of the nails spill
A group of boys before the race
Two swans swimming on a silken lake
The 'Underground' sign on a London street
The expedition to Snowdon a photo to keep

A picture of a stone built abbey
There the very first photograph taken
And a double exposure of a very close friend
Still life images of oil lamp and pans
Together with the mechanism of a mantle clock
A wheeled waste bin atop a grid
A spider’s web outlined in frost
And a foggy day at the rivers edge
The Ball and chain from an industrial crane

A certificate won for playing the trumpet
A close up of an old door latch
A very old barn without its thatch
A fish eye view to distort the street
A fallen tree across the creek
The casting shadow as the sun goes down
Runner’s legs in a lens shown round
A Lake in winter cold and still
Flotsam at the waters edge
Pupil in shorts and a rugby shirt

A fox in close up on a local lawn
Ventilator grids shown at dawn
Helicopter hovers overhead
Tudor chimneys stand into the sky
Steel stairs fixed, black paint and rusting
Sculpture of a horse’s head
And a street scene in black and white
Pleasant view of a famous hill
Across a low stone wall close to home
A planet like view of an office space
The face of a youth in a very black place
The athletes preparing for the race
And a boy shown running to keep the pace

The way to the mountain a wide-open place
A solitary lake on the steep hillside
An old stone arch with crumbling door
A leaded lantern fixed to the wall
Waterproof cover to watch the waters fall
A window latch in shadow against a clapboard house
A sash window set in an old brick wall
Dappled shade before the autumn fall
And a road sign showing ‘Highway 61’
Sadly for him this is ‘No Direction Home’

Poem: Richard Walker 12 Dec 2008

Note: These lines describe photographs taken as they came out from an old box file that belonged to my late son, many of the pictures taken by him, and a few of my own from my youth. An interesting miscellany of images with a few verbal twists of my own! The picture is of that actual box file although the contents have since been resorted. I guess many of us will have a box like this one and I thought it would be good to write just a line or two to represent each photo it contained.

Mystery Plant 258

Mystery Plant 258

When I was a kid, our family would make an annual summer trip to visit relatives in Hanover, Virginia. This was before interstate highways, and well before air-conditioning in the car, so we'd always leave early in the morning, well before dawn. Rousted from bed, and trundled dreamily into the back seat, the beginning of the trip was a bit mysterious, and somehow a grand adventure…but, boy, were we glad to get out of that car finally, late in the afternoon. My grandmother had a big yard, and it was surrounded by sweetly scented meadows and cow-pastures, and plenty of wildflowers. Here's a plant that grew next to her place, which I always remember fondly now, associating it with those fun-filled summer days and quiet evenings, the darkening skies filled first with twittering swifts, these giving it up later for bats, and finally, thousands of lightning-bugs.
I remember seeing this plant growing as a vigorous vine on top of a fence post out by her driveway. I remember big, brilliant red flowers (corollas, of course), each one strongly tubular, and red on the outside. (I thought the flowers resembled cigars.) The interior of the flower was yellowish, and I remember counting stamens inside: always four. I also remember seeing two or three big ants inside each flower…never figured out what exactly they were doing. Although they had no fragrance, the blossoms were extremely popular with bees, as well as hummingbirds.
This species is native throughout the Southeastern states, and well into the Midwest, as far north as Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The plants grow in a variety of forested sites, including disturbed roadsides and field margins, and it really likes to climb, whenever it gets the chance. Young vines climb readily by means of tiny rootlets that grasp onto just about any hard surface…including the exterior wall of your house, if given the opportunity. The vines can become massive, and they may reach well into tree canopies, sixty or so feet up. Old vines may be several inches in diameter, commonly pale gray or sort of "blonde" colored, and the large ones sometime split into several parallel segments near at the base. The leaves are deciduous, and they have a kind of tropical look, with ten to twelve toothy leaflets in pairs. The flowers end up producing a very stout bean-like pod, sharply pointed at both ends, which splits open eventually, along two lines. Quite a number of seeds are within, each one featuring two stumpy, gray wings. The seeds slowly dribble out over the winter, flying around in the breeze and settling some distance away from where they started.
This species has achieved a considerable amount of horticultural merit, and there are several named garden varieties now. As a native vine, it would be perfect in "roomy" backyards or open trellises, or maybe up a tree, as it really grows quickly, spreading rapidly...too rapidly for some, it turns out, who start pulling it up and muttering bad things about it.

Kids - Monument Valley 1970s

Kids - Monument Valley 1970s

We had lots of fun when the kids were little, by taking off on a long road trip and camping in the pickup truck. The Super Cab made one "kid bed"; the front seat "another" and a nice mattress in under the canop made the third "bed". The kids would draw with crayons, and sleep in the back while we drove. The canopy and the truck had a sliding window, so we could keep in contact (lock the back canopy window, and crawl through to the canopy section if needed. It was a lot of fun for all.

Delicate arch

Delicate arch

0 PHOTOGRAPH PARTICULARS 0

Delicate Arch under cloudy skies.

We returned to Moab after our Jeep travel off the Island in the Sky plateau, down the Shafer Trail and along the White Rim Road. After a short rest and a big meal, we headed for Arches National Park to take the Delicate Arch hike.

From the time we reached the Delicate Arch trailhead, until we reached Delicate Arch itself, the weather changed dramatically for the worse. High gusting winds made walking around the arch area a real chore. At the end of our visit I climbed up a short section of slickrock to take a photo looking through a small arch at Delicate Arch. I literally could not get near the middle of the small arch the wind was blowing so hard, so I hunkered down and shot a few photos, hiding from the wind at the edge of the small arch.

When Ed and I got back down to his Jeep at the trailhead, both of us were coughing from swallowing so much wind blown Utah desert sand. With all of that said, we both enjoyed seeing the icon arch up close. I had photographed the arch from across the canyon back in the 1970s but had never hiked to Delicate Arch itself.

We did get a reward for our perseverance however. After driving to the Windows section of Arches NP, the sun started to set, and we got some really good “golden light” photos, just as we left the park and it started getting dark. A good day all together starting with Mesa Arch in the morning and ending with Delicate Arch in the evening.

0 ACTIVITIES DAY THREE OF TWELVE 0

We had rooms reserved at the Moab, Utah Motel 6 for Tuesday and Wednesday night. This would serve as our “base camp” for visits to the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands and to Arches National Park.

Taking only camera gear and day hiking packs, we left Moab just before dawn on Wednesday morning for our visit to the Island in the Sky area. We stopped on the way into Canyonlands to photograph the sunrise and to look over and photograph the Shafer trail from the rim.

In the 1980s, I had ridden a dual sport motorcycle (Honda XL500) along the White Rim road and up the Shafer trail. I was hoping that the road might be in good enough shape to travel it on this trip with Ed’s Jeep.

After stopping at the Shafer trail overlook we made our way to the Mesa Arch TH parking. We were pleased to find nobody else there. We would not see one other person on the hike in or out nor doing our stay photographing Mesa Arch. A pleasant surprise.

After Mesa Arch we drove to Grandview Point and took a few photos there. Then backtracking we took the side road to the Upheaval Dome trail. It was the first of several geological formations that geologists have yet to agree on as to what formed it. It appears as a giant crater with a light colored “sharp” dome, rising out of its center. I tried some side by side shots there so I could stitch a panoramic photo together later.

We stopped at the Canyonlands visitor’s center on the way back and found that a free “permit” was required these days to drive the Shafer Trail and the White Rim road, so we obtained our pass and headed down the fun, interesting, and exciting route off the Island in the Sky plateau, down the old Shafer cattle trail to the White Rim road, which then runs along an esplanade above the Colorado and Green Rivers.

Traveling down the Shafer and along the White Rim roads in the Jeep, with windows rolled down, was a real treat. There are some rough spots on the White Rim road so it took us awhile to work our way back to Moab (for a mid-day meal).

That afternoon, we drove into Arches National Park headed for the trail to Delicate Arch. The weather came apart on us by this time and the gusting winds were absolutely fierce. Ignoring the blasting winds as best we could we made our way to Delicate Arch. The bad weather kept the number of people down, but the lighting wasn’t the best - - and staying upright in the high gusts of wind took some work in places. Still, we had come to see Delicate Arch, up close, and the hike there was well worth the time.

Leaving the Delicate Arch trail, the wind dropped down a little as light faded over Arches NP. We drove to the Windows Section of Arches and then out of the park as the sun began to set. Somewhere near the Petrified Dunes viewpoint area of the park, Ed sensed excellent sunset light in the offing, and we parked the Jeep off the side of the road, and climbed a small ridge for some photographs.

Ed’s intuition was perfect. Though the winds got cold, we got some of the best light of the entire day for photography, with warm red sandstones in dusk light and the snow covered La Sal Mountains in the distance (Mt. Peale at 12,720’ is the highest peak in these high desert mountains).

A bright moon peeked through the cobalt blue evening skies and storm clouds traveled quickly across the sky. So that is how the third full day of our Four Corners road trip ended; photographing the golden sunset light inside Arches National Park. Fun.

Fun.
