The Mission San Francisco de la Espada in San Antonio, Texas, is one of a chain of five missions established along the San Antonio River in the 1700s. They serve as a reminder of one of Spain's most successful attempts to extends its dominion northward from New Spain (present-day Mexico). These missions were the vanguard of Christianizing the Coahuiltecans or the local Native Americans of the area. The combined teachings by Franciscan friars of Catholic Spain with the native cultures is the origin of the unique cultural heritage of modern-day South Texas. These missions became part of the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park created by the U.S. Congress in 1978.
Mission Espada's roots lie in East Texas, where Spain founded Mission San Francisco de los Texas in 1690, the first mission in Texas, and one of several that served as a buffer against French encroachment from Louisiana. This early mission was relocated several times, and was finally established on the San Antonio River in March 1731 as Mission San Francisco de la Espada. Distinctive Spanish features are found in the church doorway, espadana (belltower) added in 1780s, brick archways, and flowing acequias (irrigation ditches). Franciscan priests clothed in brown habits live and work in the convento that is attached to the 1740s church. Other remains at the site include Indian quarters, a granary, and both Spanish Colonial and Mexican bastions.
