How to Calculate Chess Tactics
Thinking methods are at the heart of the chess strle, yet most players devote little conscious effort to improving their calculating ability. Much of the previous literature on the subject has presented idealized models that have limited relevance to the hurly-burly of practical chess, or else provide little more than ad hoc sestions. Here, experienced trainer Valeri Beim strikes a balance by explaining how to use intuition and logic together to solve tactical problems in a methodical way. He also offers advice on when it is best to calculate ‘like a machine', and when it is better to rely on intuitive assessment.
i've been searching and experimenting with "healthy" cookie recipes. i found a base recipe that sounded promising and after a few batches and playing around with ingredients, proportions, baking time, etc, this is the result. they are pretty dense and very sweet, so if you make them don't expect a rich, decadent dessert. i think the make a perfect mid-day snack. i like to freeze them and eat 'em frozen – mmm.
Oh, YUM! Cookies
In a large bowl, mix:
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 1/2 cup old fashioned oats
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 Tbsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
2 Tbsp ground flax seed
In a medium bowl, mix:
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup honey
2 Tbsp. canola oil
1/2 cup chunky applesauce
1 ripe banana, mashed
1 Tbsp. molasses
2 tsp. vanilla
Combine wet & dry ingredients.
1/4–1/2 cup raisins, dried cranberries, or other dried fruits
1/4–1/2 cup chopped almonds or other nuts
1/4–1/2 cup chopped dark chocolate or semi-sweet chocolate chips
*Note: You can add whatever sounds yummy in whatever quantities. I usually just throw stuff in until it looks like good mix-in to cookie dough proportions, which is why the above quantities are approx.
Put dough in 'frig for 20 minutes to cool.
Drop by Tablespoon-fulls onto lightly oiled baking sheet.
Bake at 350-degrees for 12–14 minutes.
Makes 48 cookies, depending on how big you make them. I tend to make mine on the small side, and they calculate to about 50 calories, 1.5 grams of fat, 4.5 grams of sugar, 1 gram of protein per cookie (of course this changes slightly depending on your mix-ins).

I bring my lunch to work almost every day. Unlike most people, I can't just pull stuff out of the fridge and put it into my lunchbox. I've first got to weigh or measure everything so I know how many carbs I'll be eating. It makes what could be a very fast task into a time consuming chore.
I have several magnetic dry erase boards on my fridge. As I pack each item into my lunch box I'll write down the weight or measure. I then take the board to my computer and log it all in Calorie King, which gives me the total calories, carbs, fat, protein & fiber in my meal.
I do the same thing when I'm creating a recipe. I write down all of the ingredients & measures, then log it in Calorie KIng and save it so that I don't have to calculate the same meal again the next time I have it.

Every player has heard the saying, "Chess is 99 percent tactics." It isn't.
It's 99 percent calculation. But until now there has never been a book devoted entirely to this most mysterious and essential chess technique.
This book examines both the technical and practical aspects of how to think ahead -- the selection of candidate moves, the evaluation of end positions, finding the proper move order, and the like.
Special attention is paid to the broad range of calculating mistakes, such as overlooked zwischenzugs and "quiet moves," visualization blunders, and "believing" your opponent.
