I took this picture from the "park of the river" in Soto del Real (Madrid, Spain) using a Kodak z712is. I was shooting the storks on the church's roof when I noticed one mother feeding its child and centered the image trying to get a better image. The original, at 7Mp shows more detail. Not good enough, but I hadn't a tripod at hand (nor the K20D with the 250mm zoom and 2x teleconverter) and the moment was too ephemeral to experiment. Considering the circumstances it was a rather good and lucky shot!

Baby Announcement

This was a gift for Shannon and Nathan. I carved a '60s' stork out of wood for the cover just for Shannon cuz she loves 60s inspired art - I was glad she noticed it too. The paper is this pearly shiny blue-grey that I bought when I first moved to Portland to print my Photography business cards on. It's finally all used up. This design fits into a 5 bar envelope and there is room to slide in a wallet sized photo of the baby under the flap. I've made a couple other baby announcements in a similar style, but this is the first with a wood-cut and it was printed in my studio garage which I now dub 'The Bat Cave'. Though on sunny days like today, I get plenty of sun. But still have no proper electricity - but that is one thing I LOVE about letterpress printing and hand carving. This entire card was made without plugging in!

Fabulous Forties neighborhood in East Sacramento - April 2011

The Fab Forties neighborhood is part of the East Sacramento district. President Ronald Reagan lived at 1341 45th Street while serving most of his term as Governor of California. The "Fab 40's" is the historic terminus of a once extensive streetcar network that covered nearly all the historic neighborhoods of the city. Forty-sixth street at J Street was the turnaround point for the J Street Line making it one of the widest streets in East Sacramento. The lots between 38th and 46th Streets and bordered by J Street and Folsom Boulevard are among the largest in East Sacramento, creating the concentration of larger houses that gave rise to the area's name. Up until the Great Depression, the grand homes of the "Fab 40's" were considered to be the modern day equivalent of a suburban mansion. Now they are considered architecturally spectacular large to mid-sized houses in a very pricey location. Additionally the demand for larger and more modern housing has created an interesting surge in the number of remodels and multi story additions throughout the McKinley Park and East Sacramento community. The Fab Forties neighborhood is home to a deodar cedar tree (cedrus deodara) that is over 100 years old.

Moon and feeds

The feeds at the focus of one of the GMRT dishes, with the moon in the background. The whole structure rotates to give place the feed for the chosen frequency facing the dish. Facing left toward the dish, the cylindrical structure is the coaxial 235/610 MHz feed. In the opposite direction the little dish is the 1.4 GHz feed. The nearer mesh octagon is the 150 MHz feed with its "boxing ring", while the circular mesh feed on the far side is the 327 MHz. Sadly I didn't catch one with the experimental 50 MHz feed mounted.

Day 2 : Olivia Meets her Mom

Lindsay woke up the next day at 6am and had not seen the baby yet. She was completely exhausted after her long labor and the c-section and slept right through the night. She had no idea that Olivia was rushed up to ICU after she was born.

Luckily, we got notice just before we went to visit her that she was doing MUCH better. They removed the tubes that were helping her breathe last night rightbefore we got there.

This is a shot of Olivia meeting her Mommy for the first time. Reaching out and holding her hand for the very first time.

This was a very moving moment. I don't think I will ever forget it!

Crazy Crib

In Maine, we have this "discount and salavage" store chain called Marden's. They often buy things from bankrupt stores or damaged items from fires, hurricanes, etc and resell them at huge discounts.

On saturday they had this AMAZING round crib. The photo doesn't do it justice. The sign on it reads:

Now, a) we already have a crib and b) we don't know the gender of our baby and its awfully "girly" and c) we don't have $1200 to spend on a crib even if a and b were not true, but -- WOW.

What scares me, really, is that the Marden's price is $1200+. Normally (although not always) Marden's is about 50 - 70% off retail price. I shudder to think how much the retail price was on this.

And its on wheels!

In addition to encountering Captain Nemo and the Nautilus, Nadia, King, and Jean visit the 12,000-year-old remains of the Atlantean Empire. Secret of Blue Water boasts an impressive pedigree: Hayao Miyazaki proposed the idea as a young animation artist, and the first 22 episodes were directed by Hideaki Anno, the creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion. It's interesting to see how Miyazaki developed the combination of a heroine of unknown origin, a mysterious gem, a young aviator, and a lost civilization more fully in Castle in the Sky, and how some of the Atlanteans' science prefigures themes in Evangelion. But the story stalls when Nadia, Jean, and their friends are shipwrecked on a tropical island: the filmmakers just mark time until the villains reappear and main plot picks up. Nadia is a rare example of a heroine of color in anime, and her fervent defense of animal rights demonstrates her unusual strength of character. But she can also seem priggish and self-righteous when she bullies Jean and berates people who've saved her life. Secret of Blue Water remains a fan favorite almost two decades after its release, as its adventurous storyline appeals to audiences of both sexes. Baby Onesie Cake

We had an order today for a cake for a new baby "meet and greet". So, I had seen a picture of a similar cake on Cake Central and was wishing for an opportunity to make one.

This cake started as a 1/2 sheet cake and was carved down slightly to get the onesie shape. It's a yellow butter cake with chocolate buttercream frosting and then covered in fondant. Decorations are also fondant.

we love us some baby legs.

i've been trying to solve an issue where i upload to flickr from iphoto and it lightens the pictures considerably. i know i can converto to srgb in photoshop to get them to upload properly but if i just wanted to do a quick edit in iphoto and upload, going into photoshop is an unnecessary and irritating step. so, i've developed a method using automator to fix it. it's not perfect but it works much better than not doing it at all. it's definitely still not as vibrant as the original but it's one step and doesn't require photoshop. if you're an iphoto user and have some interest in this, just shoot me a flickr mail and i'll send you the workflow.

My ex mother in law Antonia passed away this weekend in her sleep at the age of 79

the kids helped me with this - my son will read it at her service on Wednesday in South Texas.

Our grandma Toni loved everyone unconditionally and I am here to talk about some of our fondest memories of her.

My mom said that the first time grandma saw my sister Rebecca she laughed sang and nuzzled Rebecca’s neck. Rebecca used to play with grandma’s hair while she napped and before you knew it Rebecca had put 100 barrettes in her hair.

My sister Tonya worshiped her grandma and would cry when it was time to go home. Grandma and Tonya would spend time in the kitchen like two friends gossiping only Tonya wasn’t talking yet so it would be mostly grandma gossiping. Grandma babysat a lot and Tonya didn’t like to stay put so grandma tied the baby walker to the front porch so she could work in the garden.

Mom told me that grandma would rock me to sleep and whisper for me to grow up to be a good man like my dad. When I was a teenager she called and my voice had changed that summer and she thought I was my dad on the phone and no matter what I said she insisted she was talking to my dad. She even yelled at me to not talk back. I don’t think she ever realized it wasn’t my dad on the phone.

When we were little she would always be in the kitchen. She would put us in our high chair and give us little bites of food like her famous beans and tortillas to keep us entertained. We would yell “mas” “mas” as she tickled our feet. We remember her singing and dancing and we were her captive audience.

Grandma indulged our every whim, she had a unique way of doing things and we will always love her for that. She enjoyed nothing more in life then spoiling babies. The memories are endless and we are honored to be loved by her.
